Rockport Ridge #1

My Little Barista

Rate this book
One rude customer was all it took for Caleb to get noticed.

The only thing Caleb ever wanted was a family to call his own. Growing up in the foster system, Caleb moved around a lot. Although his physical needs were met during those formative years, his emotional needs took a back seat to what his heart desired most–love. Getting a coffee shop job was his first step in gaining his independence. But it wasn’t until one morning that a rude customer changed everything.

The look on Caleb’s scared, brave face is all it took to melt Barrett’s daddy heart.

Running late to work and stopping at the coffee shop he vowed never to step foot in again, Barrett witnessed a poor barista on the wrong end of an angry customer. Before he could intervene, another customer confronted the man, but the damage had already been done. The poor kid looked scared, and all Barrett wanted to do was wrap the stranger in his arms to protect him from the world.

Will this brief encounter change the way Barrett views past failed relationships? Will Caleb finally get the found family he’s been looking for?

Join Caleb and Barrett as they embark on their journey of love.

Eh. This reads like a fucking mad libs age play MM romance. Like insert character name here insert character trauma here and you got yourself a story. There is nothing original about it and frankly it's boring as hell. It's not bad per se but it's also not good. I am going to forget everything about this book within a day of reading it.

I have two semi-significant actual issues with it. The first is the practicing of kink in public without consent of those around you. One of the main components to kink is consent if not the component. And that doesn't just mean for the one two three or more parties involved in the actual kink itself, but it involves the consent of those who may witness or are around you. Practicing kink in a public space that is not designated for kink is inappropriate and not done. Now regressing in public or slipping up and calling a partner or a name is not the end of the world in terms of consent issues but I don't like that it was totally normalized and not addressed at all.

My second issue is when one of our main characters and his best friend are openly discussing their sex lives at their workplace and a female co-worker overhears and makes a comment. The best friend makes a comment about how he doesn't want to hear about lady parts and then shudders. Now I brought this up in a Facebook group that I'm a part of and I ended up deleting my comment because I just cannot deal with people giving praise blindly. You can still be misogynistic and transphobic even if you are trans and queer. Period. I think that acknowledging that this is a crappy comment would go a long way but buckling down and explaining it away not my favorite look.

It's probably a moot point to mention it here anyway since all of the reviews for this are high praise but I don't think it's too much to ask for romance books to be a little bit more mindful about how they speak about people and the implications that comments might have.

Last but not least, I am not a fan of the late '30s gets with a barely an adult age gap. I'm here for an age gap, I really am. But almost 20 years and when one of them is barely 18/19, it feels icky. I should have stopped as soon as I realized how old each of the characters were but I saw this book at high praise and the Facebook group I'm a part of and I wanted to try it but I know better. Give me a 20-year age gap with a 25 and a 45, or a 30 and a 50, or a 40 and a 60 but a 19 and a 38 is wild to me especially when the 19 has very little actual life experience besides traumatic foster homes. Feels like a recipe for disaster but you do.

This book was recommended in a FB group I am in and compared to an author I absolutely love. So it was a no brainer to grab it.

I was so disappointed and I think that’s largely because the expectations were set very high. The author this was compared to writes well rounded and well researched books. The characters are interesting and even where they are young or have traumatic backstories they are able to hold their own and while there are sometimes power imbalances it doesn’t feel predatory or fetishising.

This did not meet that mark.

If this was my first Daddy/Little book I’d never read another one again… and I’m a little. But thankfully it’s not and there are authors out there who don’t write the same overdone itty bitty teenager with damn near middle aged saviour.

I really didn’t like this story. The concept was there, but it was not presented in a way that I enjoyed.. I really just didn’t like this author’s writing.

A 38 year old pursuing a 19 year old is predatory, not romantic. Especially a naive 19 year old with trauma.

I really should stop reading this type of book. None of them compare in the least to Asher’s answer. I picked it up because I wanted something fluffy after the heavy read I just finished. This wasn’t it 🤣
It was predictable and very uneventful. And what always bothers me: so much time was skipped. Something excited happened. I’d expect a follow up the next time they meet. But now. They see each other for four more weeks, before we get taken into the story again. That doesn’t happen in real life! You don’t ignore four a big elephant while you see each other regularly and then all of a sudden pick up the conversation again. And the thing is, something probably did happen in the meantime but the author just doesn’t bother to tell us. “It’s been a couple of weeks of easy dates and getting to know Barrett more in this new relationship dynamic.” And then, a few lines below: “Every time I think about him, I get aroused.” So… lots of missed chances.

And what always makes me cringe: when they meet the parents, and they know. Especially when Barrett’s dad says: “you can call me Dad”. So now we have Dad and daddy? Cringe 😄

Anyway, the story is ok. And there is some sort of plot. But I think I’ll skip the sequel.

The sweetest Little and his Daddy

I read a lot of age play books and I can easily say that this one ranks right up in the top tier! Caleb and Barrett are absolutely perfect together and I loved seeing how their relationship grew as both boyfriends and Daddy/boy. Caleb has had such a hard childhood and the emotional trauma is pretty profound. Regressing to a child is his way of coping with life and Barrett couldn't have been any more patient and understanding. They truly do fill those roles that the other person needs and in such a sweet manner. Everything felt very realistic and their progression into a more intimate side of their relationship was the perfect slow burn. Brooklyn Jai is a new-to-me author and I'm definitely looking forward to discovering more of their books. I really enjoyed this story quite a bit!

So Cute!

Caleb and Barrett are so cute together. They both are looking for the perfect person to live the rest of their life together with. After several felled relationships, Barrett is about to give up. When he goes to the coffee shop that he hasn’t been to in a while, the meets the sweetest most adorable young man he has after seen, Caleb. Caleb is one of the baristas at the town’s coffee shop and when he meets Barrett, he is instantly in love. Together they weed their way through this thing called life and something just clicks for them. It’s a sweet, adorable little story and worth 5 stars ⭐️. Brooklyn Jai did an amazing job! 💜

I liked the book generally, however characters didn’t really seem to have much depth. I’d have liked more details and just more of them being together and not just step by step by step sort of thing.
There were MANY grammatical errors and a few spelling mistakes that were missed and although at the end it said an editor looked through it to correct them, I found enough of them to be very annoying. Like speech marks were missing in some areas and then in others where they weren’t needed.
Sorry to say a little bland

not so low angst

If you are at all triggered by sa, I’d skip this one. It isn’t mentioned just once. Caleb remembers or expresses his trauma in every chapter. There’s a flashback/nightmare on page as well. I was a bit surprised to read about editors because this could use more proofreading. There’s also a point where Caleb is called Noah. Minor issues, but the name thing always pulls me out of a story.

I’d say higher angst. Lower heat with this one. It’s cute, but be prepared

Such a sweet age play romance

My Little Barista is book 1 in the Rockport Ridge series. It’s an mm age gap, age play romance.
This is such a sweet age play romance. I loved the D/L time as much as their fun spicy times. Easy and heartwarming, this read is perfect for those who love little Littles and their Daddies.

There are so many editing errors through the book and name switches that are wrong that it was tough to get through. The story was good, but with all the errors it got knocked down a lot.
