The Perfect Vow

Rate this book
The Perfect Marriage. The Perfect Lie. The Perfect Vow.

Ever since childhood, my mother taught me that to compete with the mediocrity of men, I had to be perfect. Not just good—flawless. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. Perfect posture. Perfect silence. That obsession became both my armor—and my prison.

Then I met the perfect man, Sean and everything changed.

When my business partners insisted we bring Sean into the company—arguing that a masculine presence would boost ratings—I hesitated. I should have trusted my instincts. A few weeks in, I found pink lace panties hidden in his gym bag. Days later, while snooping in his office, I uncovered a second laptop filled with love letters to a woman named, Sandra Newman. In them, he detailed our fertility struggles… and fantasized about a life with her instead of me.

The life I’d built with surgical precision began to fracture. And then strange things started happening.

Orchids were left on my doorstep—submerged in glass vases filled with chocolate milk. I heard whispered voices in the night. My parents began tormenting me about the son they lost decades ago—on the exact anniversary of his death. And the man I thought I’d buried six feet deep enough never to be found? He began appearing in reflections, shadows, even my dreams were he taunted me and begged for vengeance.

Someone wasn't just threatening to expose the secret I spent decades burying.

They’re unraveling my reality, piece by piece.

Now I’m left to Can my marriage survive betrayal? Can my mind survive the truth?

Or will the darkness I’ve fought so hard to suppress finally devour everything I've fought so hard to protect, including me?

For fans of dark thrillers Verity, The Perfect Marriage and The Housemaid.

Wowzers! How many twists can one reveal in one book 🤣. And I mean they just kept coming until the very last page.. Everyone had secrets, and their secrets had secrets. This gripping story was entertaining from start to finish, & the amount of deception between this family was definitely worth the read.

Angelica & Sean are the picture perfect couple. Angelica is head pastor at her church that she built from the ground up, and Sean is a professor at a local university. They both are harboring secrets that they would much rather remain buried, but when mysterious notes show up warning Sean that Angelica has secrets, and Angelica is already suspicious of Sean having his own secrets, this couple will stop it nothing to find out what the other is hiding. Clark & Carolyn are Angelica’s parents and they have some deep rooted secrets as well! When this story unfolds, it’s truly dynamite!

Overall a very solid read that I recommend for any fan of domestic thrillers, with jaw dropping twists that you won’t see coming. 4.5 ⭐️

The plot reminded me of a Tyler Perry melodrama and less of a thriller. All the characters were unlikable, especially the FMC. The rather long chapters almost had me calling it quits a few times. There several reveals towards the end that had me rolling my eyes.

I made a perfect vow to myself not to waste any more time on this book, yet here I am posting a review. Consider it a public service.

This book is a bad soap opera deceptively billed as a “dark psychological thriller” to attract unwary readers. The author has created a cast of thoroughly despicable characters consisting, in part, of a pastor with identity issues who we learn in the first chapter murdered her brother, and her adulterous husband who also murdered his brother but is a popular professor of theology who teaches Hebrew literature and religious studies at a Princeton university. He also posed naked in his wife’s church bulletin. At one point he and his wife were in their car listening to an audiobook written by … guess who? Franklin Christopher. In a shameless act of self-promotion the author has written a book where his characters are enjoying one of his books.

No, this is not a comedy, a farce or a witty satire. To the contrary, the revelations at the end are so far-fetched that rather than clever they are simply ridiculous. When the implausible becomes the incredible it’s no longer fiction. It’s nonsense.

Don’t say you weren’t warned.

I had the privilege to read the Beta for The Perfect Vow and WOW.... here is my 4.5 ⭐️ review:

Franklin Christopher does it again to date. I have read all of his books, and they never disappoint. He always leaves you wanting, waiting, and needing the next one . So the title, The Perfect Vow, makes you think without even reading the description the book definitely has to do with marriage. When I say it is so much more than that, that is an understatement. It is love, hurt desire, revenge, secrecy, dedication, commitment, entrapment, spiritual, and malpractice... I could go on and on because this book has it all and then some. If you ever want to know how far parents would go for their child, these parents will blow your mind. They will stop at nothing to show their parental commitment for not only their child's but their own happiness. It will make you shake your head and realize the apple did not fall far from the tree. What these parents want they make sure they get at any cost or deceit necessary. Pick up this book and all of his others while you are shopping because trust me, you will not regret the decision. Well done, Franklin Christopher. You never disappoint, and I'm now ready for the next one.

I was an ARC reader on this book and I honestly couldn’t make it past the first few chapters. The FMC is unbearable. She’s entitled and rude. But the thing that made me decide to put it down and not pick it back up was the anti-LGBTQI+ and fatphobic language. If the author is putting all that out there in the first 3 chapters, I don’t even want to know what else is going to be slipped into the rest of the book. I’m sorry, I really wanted to like this book but I can’t keep going.

I was honored to be selected to read an ARC of this story. It has been a long time since a story gripped me right from the beginning and had me staying up long into the night to find out the ending.

From the very beginning, Christopher has you believing you know who is exactly in charge, but by the end, it leaves you knowing you were wrong.

It is a story that you don't even realize until the end that the author has masterfully interwoven details throughout until finally the pieces start falling into place - one by one.

Twists and turns abound that has Mr Christopher in the leagues of some of the greats like McFadden, Edwards, and Modglin.

A story that leaves the reader thinking that picture-perfect relationships are not always picture perfect - what is portrayed to the world is not what happens behind the steely gates of home.

The ending has me wondering if a sequel is in store for this family and what other secrets may lurk in still closed closets.

Despite the minor spelling and grammatical mistakes, it still ranks a 5/5 for me.

From chapter 1 Angelica is absolutely atrocious. This is the 2nd ARC I’ve read from Franklin Christopher and the 2nd time I’ve truly disliked his characters. This book was not my cup of tea. I felt like church was being mocked. The storyline was so far fetched and a bit ridiculous to me. I hate to say anything bad because I know the author worked really hard on this book. Others may enjoy it but my honest review is I don’t think this author is for me. This is the second book of his I have read and I honestly had to force myself to finish both because I was chosen as an ARC reader.

Ugh where do I start.
Well… first of all the last like 30% of the book redeems itself because it was going to be a solid 2 star read. The beginning was tough to get through. I lost count of how many times I smacked my lips and rolled my eyes. Melodramatic!! The FMC is highly unlikable. Angelica’s character was downright atrocious.

Goodness gracious “PASTOR” Angelica get over yourself geez! She was so annoying! Asked her husband to do something for her, he did it, he succeeded (better than she ever thought) and she’s pissed off about it? Throwing a temper tantrum and all!!! She was literally off her rocker! And at first I was totally against her….until the secrets started spilling out; and boy was it a flood!

I get it. Angelica built the church up from the get-go!!! The church is successful (even after the debacle with the assistant preacher). It was soooooo repetitive. How many times are we going to be let known what she had to do, what she had to sacrifice to start the church. It was just a lot of women empowerment and feminism thrown down your neck. Don’t get me wrong I’m rooting for all women! But it was a bit too much… but apparently it was for a reason.

Sean was no angel let’s get that straight. Pastorbae definitely fooled me. I just couldn’t understand how with 10 years of marriage both of them kept it together for so dang long. Then one little thread came undone then there went the spool.

The conniving, calculated manipulation, lies, the drama was loud throughout the story. However, along with that came the hypocrisy & blasphemy. God really don’t like ugly.

I didn’t think I would continue with the next book in the series. I’m actually still on the fence. I despised the beginning but appreciated the end. I guess we shall see.

I’m very selective about handing out five-star ratings but let me tell you! The Perfect Vow absolutely earned every single one. WOW. This was my first read by Franklin Christopher, and I can confidently say I’m officially obsessed!

What immediately stood out to me was the uniqueness of the main character. I’ve never read a novel where the protagonist is a Pastor, and it delivered in ways I didn’t expect. The story felt fresh, layered, and completely gripping from start to finish.

One of the details I especially loved was the thoughtful chapter titles. They added an extra dimension to the narrative and made me even more eager to keep turning the pages. Speaking of which, the short chapters made it almost impossible to put this book down. I found myself flying through them, constantly wanting to know what would happen next.

Let’s talk about surprises: I literally counted three moments where my jaw dropped. That’s no exaggeration. The suspense kept me fully locked in, and the twists were masterfully done.

Franklin Christopher’s writing style reminded me a lot of Karin Slaughter, sharp, fast-paced, and rich with well developed, realistic characters. The tension and pacing were pitch perfect, making this an exhilarating and highly satisfying read.

If you’re looking for a suspenseful, character-driven novel that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go, this is it.

The twists in this book had twists 😂 you never knew what to expect one page from to the next! It was a fast paced and fun read!

Blurb:
My mother taught me early: to survive in a world built for mediocre men, I had to be perfect. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. Perfect silence. That obsession became my armor—and my prison.

Then I met Sean. Handsome, charming, successful. My husband. The perfect man. Or so I thought.

When my business partners insisted we bring Sean into our company—to “balance the energy”—I agreed against my better judgment. Weeks later, I found pink lace panties in his gym bag. Then came the second laptop, filled with love letters to a woman named Sandra Newman. He wrote about our fertility struggles… and dreamed of a life with her instead of me.

That’s when everything began to unravel.

Orchids started appearing on my doorstep—submerged in vases of chocolate milk. My parents began tormenting me about the son they lost decades ago—on the exact anniversary of his death. And the man I thought I’d buried deep enough to forget? He began appearing in mirrors, in dreams… whispering threats, demanding revenge.

Someone is trying to destroy me.

Not just my marriage.

Not just my mind.

But everything I’ve spent a lifetime building with surgical precision—everything I tried to control.

But I won’t let them, because we made a vow. A perfect vow.

I feel honored that I have been picked as an ARC reader for this rollercoaster ride.

Great writing as always, and a lot of turns and twists. I sometimes thought I've figured tings out. Well, I did not. It reminds me a lot of Freida McFadden in many ways indeed - which was also a reason why I wanted to read this book.

I have to admit, though, I am still not sure if I like the FMC or not. But it does not really matter anyway, like it did not keep me from wanting to figure out if her beloved husband has really lied to her all the time. If really someone is threatening her to expose her dark past, and also, why? Could it be the woman her husband is meeting behind her back?

If you got curious now, just like I was, you have to go and read the book! I promise you are not going to regret it! 4.5 stars for this wild read!

From the opening chapter, The Perfect Vow stirred memories of the Netflix hit Greenleaf—church drama, secrets, and power plays woven into sanctified halls. But make no mistake: Franklin Christopher’s gripping thriller doesn’t just echo Greenleaf, it amplifies and surpasses it.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around how Christopher managed to keep me on edge page after page, twisting the narrative with such precision that even my best guesses fell flat. Each chapter delivers new revelations, turning logic on its head and daring you to keep up. The plot is a masterclass in psychological suspense—fast-paced, unnerving, and brilliantly tangled. It’s a story that grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go.
If you’re drawn to cerebral thrillers with a dark undertone and gasp-worthy twists, this book belongs on your shelf. Five stars to Mr. Christopher for crafting a suspense-filled ride that’s as haunting as it is exhilarating.

This story fully depicts the stereotype of bad Christians (I’m not mad about that).
So many lies and secrets, and much deceit. Marriage is hard and things must be done to keep it strong and together. So many twists and turns, just when you think you know something, BAM you realize you don’t. The story may feel like it’s slow and going nowhere which it does start off that way, but I promise you it will pick up and become a page turner about half way through. Don’t give up and don’t think you have it figured out, either.

Franklin Christopher’s writing is absolutely unhinged—and I love every second of it. This story is bizarre, not in an outlandish, impossible way, but in a way that makes you think, “This could actually happen.” And that’s exactly why I’ll keep coming back to Christopher’s books.

This isn’t your typical suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller. It doesn’t pull you in with fast-paced action from the start—instead, it lures you in and then drives you straight into one of the most mind-bending experiences you’ll ever read.

Weird, wild, and wonderfully disturbing. Highly recommend for fans of the “Wait… what did I just read?” experience.

I was so excited to be picked as an ARC reader and jumped in as soon as I finished the book I was reading. Many jaw-dropping moments throughout the book. As in the first book I read from Franklin Christopher, his main two characters were horrible people, but they are what the twists hinged on every time. They couldn't be better people that you could fall in love with, or the twists wouldn't be as gripping. There are lots of WTF moments that had me wanting to cringe and throw my kindle that kept me reading.

That ending on top of ending on top of ending had me shook! Lol…I just finished reading this book and my jaw hit the floor and bounced several more times; twist after twist after twist! Franklin Christopher has got my head spinning and I’m here for it!!! I really don’t know if I’ve read a book with that many turns…seriously, I reached a certain point of the storyline where I couldn’t put it down. The whole book played in my mind like I was watching a movie…. and boy, this would be a good one if that ever happened. I'm looking forward to Part 2!

If you aren't reading this book what are you doing?!?!?! I needed a good palette cleanser from all the fantasy Ive been reading. Franklin never lets me down! This is the 3rd book I've read by him that's consistently been 5 stars. You can always expect twists on twists. He is in his own league. I enjoy finding the Easter eggs in his books from previous writings. This is not the vow you think it is! In true Franklin fashion it's something you never saw coming. Chocolate milk will play a big part in this story.

Wow. This book has actual jaw dropping twists. I was an arc reader for this one and I flew through it. This is my second book by this author and I love how addicting his writing is. I was a little confused on the timeline a couple of times, I felt it wasn’t clear if it had been hours/days but I did read an arc version so it could get fixed. I still really enjoyed the story and the characters are wild. I’d love a sequel.

This was my first Franklin Christopher book, and it definitely won't be my last! In my opinion, for a psychological thriller to be considered "good," it needs to be unique and totally unpredictable. I would say this book fits that description. Like, holy SHIZA!!! Sooooo many things that I did NOT see coming! My mouth was left open with my jaw on the floor a couple of times while reading this book.

This is a must-read!!!

A solid book written by a newer (at least to me) author. Per usual, his characters are flawed and interesting in a semi toxic way (or so it seems), however, when you get down to the storyline, some of it is understandable. His characters are always complex and you never quite know what you’re getting, which always makes for an interesting read.

I really didn’t read anything about this book before going in but I was really excited to read once I got into it! I didn’t know it would be about religion sort of or that religion would be a main theme but good mercy did it have its twists and turns
I legitimately had to go back and check to see if what I was reading was true! Would absolutely recommend

Thank you for the ARC. This book was WILD and TWISTY! This man knows how to keep us guessing. I’m not a religious person even though there was a slight religious aspect to this but that didn’t matter as this book was unputdownable.

So, I ended up giving this a 4 even though I had been planning on giving it a 3. I was really struggling with getting through this, but was too nosy and needed to know what happened so kept reading. 🤣 It was finally after about 3/4 into the book that things started getting good and picking up pace. Things went in a different direction than I expected and I now may have to read the sequel lol.
