When Katherine wakes in a castle, her name is the first thing she hears. It is not something she remembers.
No past. No people. No way to make sense of the eight mortals brought to Eyrondale for their protection, or why they look at her as though they have already lost her once.
A prophecy bound to her power is stirring. The Five Trials of Fate are about to begin, and when a mortal is chosen in place of one of the sons of Magic, destiny shifts.
In the first instalment of The Ashes of Eyrondale series, Katherine embarks on a journey that forces her to confront her past, unlock the power within her, and fight to keep her heart from ruling her head.
The first trial brings no threat of failure, only the return of truths she is not ready to face. Piece by piece, her past comes to light as she revisits her history with each of the Five Champions of Fate. Forced to make sense of lives once lived through dreamlike fragments and fractured recollections, she soon learns that some truths are tender, others are laced with betrayal, and some only begin to scratch the surface.
The Awakening of a Princess is a slow-burn romantasy woven with magic realism and paranormal intrigue. Told through multiple points of view, it leans into longing rather than resolution, prioritises emotional stakes over physical intimacy, and embraces unanswered questions instead of easy truths.
The first trial is the easiest. The second forces her to exist in the present while carrying five pasts she cannot forget.

"A frigid breeze swept past .... coiling around her ankles as it drifted towards her friend, whispering secrets of dark magic and forbidden power." (Ch 2)
When I first started reading this book, I was like Okaaayyy! We got a little Saw (as in the movie) / high-stakes escape room action going on... continued reading and though it had a sliver of what could be considered a similarity to a twisted game in the beginning... maybe not so much at all of that in the remaining. I'm really not sure why the elaborate setup in the beginning was necessary. Something simpler would have been just as sufficient. I think it was for the shock and showboat factor.
Still not certain how the other mortals play into the whole thing other than to be basically witnesses, spectators, or page fillers. They seem to be in the forefront and Katherine more in the background the majority of the time. I mean, Katherine had a tendency to disappear (wander off) not only from their standpoint, but she'd disappear from the pages often, as well.
"The gown’s deep red bled against the pristine white that blanketed the room – a defiant stain on an untouched canvas." (Ch 18)
Per the prophecy, there are five trials of fate. In this book, the 1st one forces Katherine and the 5 champions (four princes and a mortal) to confront and sort of relive their past lives together in a seemingly timeless kaleidoscope of emotions and memories. A couple of these were interesting and held my attention much much better, where all else prior was a bit convoluted. The heart feels for a couple of them!!! Omgee! That alone upped the stars. But on the same token, parts were a little confuzzling.
Anyway, it ended on a hook note. Since this book only contained one of the five trials, there are likely to be 4 more books in the series.
"He placed his hands on the sides of Katherine’s face and kissed her with a passion that could have sparked the creation of a thousand new worlds." (Ch 10)
I’m very grateful to have received an ARC of The Awakening of a Princess—thank you! This review is entirely voluntary.
Let me start by saying I think this book has solid potential and I suspect it’ll find a loyal group of readers who really click with it. The premise is interesting, the stakes are high, and there’s no shortage of characters to meet… and meet… and try to keep straight. I swear at one point I felt like I was speed-dating a fantasy kingdom.
The first 6–7 chapters had me more puzzled than enchanted—I was too busy mentally drawing a royal family tree and checking if I missed a prequel. I understand the appeal of a slow unraveling of information (who doesn’t love a good mystery?), but here it felt more like trying to complete a large puzzle.
I wanted to feel something—connection, annoyance, anything—toward the characters, but sadly, they never quite broke out of the “blur of names and titles” phase for me. That said, if you enjoy layered worldbuilding and the thrill of piecing together complicated plots, this might be your thing.
In short: it wasn’t for me, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be for you. Give it a try—you might just find your next favorite.
The Awakening of a Princess is a fantasy romance with a unique magic system. The FMC, Katherine, is the lost daughter of Time and has to participate in five trials in order to regain her memories and powers. Emotions are high as these trials will determine who will capture Katherine’s heart and who will help her to fulfill her fate as told by the prophecy.
The story jumps right in on page 1 and there’s a bit of chaos to sort through- but as I kept reading I was more and more curious as to what happens next. Not everything is revealed at once and it is intentional. This is a slowww burn with lots of emotional intensity. Throughout the story there are emotionally charged themes such as fate, duty, and destiny.
This is book 1 in a series and covers ONE of the trials that must take place. I enjoyed the premise of this book and wish that book 2 was out right now so I could continue reading about the next trial!!
Tropes- memory loss, prophecy, trials, enemies to lovers, forced proximity
I’m very grateful to have received an ARC, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Katherine, the lost princess of Eyrondale, is resurrected without her powers or memories, triggering an ancient prophecy. She must now complete the first of the Five Trials of Fate: kiss each of the 5 champions to gain all memories related to that champion. Only once she completes this trial will all her memories and powers return. I really feel like this had good potential, but it fell a little short for me. There was a long list of characters, which meant to me that they all blended into one. With the perspective changes, we get a look into the events from different viewpoints, but a couple of times, I found myself wondering what the purpose was of a certain perspective. The worldbuilding was solid, and the descriptions were extremely vivid. The writing was very poetic, which enhanced the storytelling; however, at times, I did feel myself losing interest due to the lengthy descriptions. Overall, I feel that it’s a good foundation for the next books in the series.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and I am happily providing my honest review and opinion.
I found it very difficult to care for these characters because there were so many - a few I thought could’ve been cut out. I already don’t find third person POV’s interesting but they don’t bother me! What did bother me was that the POV’s kept changing frequently and sometimes within the same chapter. It left me feeling quite confused and I had to go back and read parts again to really understand what was going on.
The positives? I did really enjoy the concept - bachelorette style trials, lost memories, learning the world alongside the FMC. The story had great potential!! But the execution did not hit for me.
I promised an honest review. Usually I don’t go very thorough in those, but this time I wanted to! [SPOILERS FREE]
- I enjoyed the reader guidance, especially explaining basically to be patient and trust the process! In this day and age, we want everything to fast to early, so I like this reminder. So people, stop complaining and be patient!
- I listened to the playlist (not while reading) I do enjoy and see the vibe, but lyrics usually distrubs me while reading. I am all for an ambience playlist tho.
- There is a lot to remember (who’s who, who’s from where, who’s is related to who) which I hope things will sink in my brain as I keep reading the books. I like when the author sprinkles a few reminders over time to refresh my memory, hope this will be the case.
- Sometimes I felt that I wasn’t grasping all the action, but that could be my ADHD brain or my English level or the way it is written. No complaints here, but more noticing that it is written differently that what I am used to read, and it’s a good thing! But sometimes I had to reread something after having the feeling that someone teleported and I missed what happened.
- I enjoyed the mystery, but I hope the pace will pick up more in the present now that the basics and the past are layed out.
- Character-wise, they are all different and I like it, but I don’t have my favourite one that I will emotionally invest my soul in…yet! I am excited for more mystery and more encounters with the ennemies… who ever they might be!
TLDR: It’s unique, intriguing and I want more of everything! It’s a unique story and I am excited for the next books to come out!
The blurb for this book really drew me in... trials of fate, confronting her past, slow-burn romance? I was sold!
The concept of kissing each prince + Bayne for the first trial and reliving memories was definitely interesting, and a few of those chapters I found really compelling. Her history with Marko, Kaedon, and Alek were all fascinating, though it felt as if Bayne and Deacon's trials were somewhat less important or an afterthought.
I know it is only the first book in the series, but I wish we had seen/learned more about Carter. Why did fate kick him out of the trial? Why does he have a massive stick up his ass?
As it stands, I have so many questions. Again, I understand that this is the series opener, but it felt as though I gained no insights into why the humans are even in Eyrondale, why it kept switching back to Emily's perspective even though she barely interacted with Katherine, or how most of the characters even relate to each other (like what are half of the humans contributing). Lowkey over 400 pages of a story with very little plot movement or character development. Even though Katherine regained her memories/powers, she was often not on the page nor her feelings explained/hinted at in any deeper manner.
This novel did peak my interest to want to know more, plus I typically enjoy series more the deeper I dive into them, so I will likely pick up book two upon release.
The Awakening of a Princess follows Katherine whose prophecy begins as she dies in her mortal self and returns to her kingdom. In this prophecy she must now hold trials with the 5 princes to find the one with whom she will produce an heir and be ever powerful. This book is trial one - the kiss. Oh and she has no memory of who she is.
I found this book to have too much going on and I got very confused going into and the first 40% was just hard to get into. Once the trial started it got more interesting but even then I feel like there was so much the author was trying to set up and talk about it felt confusing. The first half of the book needs to be less condensed with all thats going on and simpler.
The idea and storyline is interesting, I'm intrigued.
This book requires focus, as there is some heavy world building that goes on. However, I really loved seeing the world unfold from two different perspectives: the mortals and a princess who lost her memories. 5 princes must compete in trials to see who fate has picked to be her soul mate. The problem? The princess has no recollection of her life or her experiences with any of them anymore. The action starts right in the first chapter and is fast-paced, which immediately grabs your curiosity. I was really invested in the outcome of the story and can't wait to see what happens in book 2!
I feel like this series has great potential, however it will be one of those series that when you recommend it you have to say "you just have to get through book one" the 1st 50% of this book really failed to draw me in or hold my attention. The world building seemed to leave a lot unsaid, and there are way too many characters. In the second half the plot starts to really pick up and I started to feel really invested in the story, but I still felt like there were times it jumped to a perspective that didn't feel like it added anything to the story and instead distracted from the plot.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a high-concept romantasy that leans heavily on mystery, hidden memories, and magical trials, with a dream-like vibe that won’t be for everyone. The author’s note up front warns that this is very much a “first in a series” book and honestly, that warning felt necessary. This book is intentionally confusing and abstract in places, and while I can see the creative ambition behind it, the execution didn’t quite work for me.
The concept is really compelling: Katherine wakes up with no memory, surrounded by strangers who clearly care about her, and gets pulled into a magical prophecy involving five trials and five past loves. There’s a lot of emotion baked into the premise but none of it landed for me because the book never let me get close enough to the characters. We’re told that there’s deep history here, but because it’s all off-page or quickly glossed over during trials, I didn’t feel any of it. And the fact that we jump between so many POVs (sometimes mid-chapter) made things even harder to track. The result was a cast of characters I didn’t really know, doing things I didn’t fully understand, in a plot that didn’t have enough momentum to carry me through the confusion.
That said, I do want to give the author credit for crafting something that feels unique. This book isn’t like anything else I’ve read in the genre, and I think there’s clearly an expansive, emotional story here under the surface. It just needs more grounding, especially in the early chapters, and some restraint in how POVs were used. Personally, I think this could’ve worked so much better as a single-POV narrative, especially since Katherine’s journey of rediscovering herself is clearly the emotional heart of the story. I'm not sure why the mortals had to be there at all. They feel like movie extras. It's a little odd that the main character isn't given all of the page time.
Most of the book feels like a very slow burn with fragmented flashbacks, and then suddenly, the last 10% starts dropping the good stuff. By then, it was a little too late for me, but if you’re someone who enjoys mysterious, slow-reveal fantasies and you’re okay with delayed gratification, this might hit differently for you.
I'm very grateful to the author, booksirens, and QP Book Tours for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
ARC Review The Awakening of a Princess by Samantha de la Porté
Thank you to Samantha for giving me the opportunity to be apart of your ARC team, here is my honest review.
I cannot remember reading a book like this. I was so confused in the beginning there where so many characters being introduced and such intense world building I felt as though I was struggling to keep up.
However the more I got into the book the more I began to understand and follow. I am truly intrigued by this story and cannot wait for book two to find out what happens next. Samantha was not lying when she said we would be left confused, wanting answers and questioning everything.
Honestly after finishing the book and really taking what I read in, I have a weird feeling that how the book was written was in such a way to give us as a reader the same confused feeling with all our questions etc. as the FMC herself had in the book having lost all her memories We were lost in her world finding the way through with her the whole time even while having so many characters guide us along the journey.
Ok so there is a chapter that has stuck with me and it's the scene with the 5 dances. I mean... it was just so well written I can only imagine how this would be portrayed on screen
And out of the 5 champions of this book I have to say I am team Kaëden. Don't get me wrong there is something to like about almost every character in this book but when I finished and I asked myself who I would place my bet on its Kaëden. Reason or explanation for my choice, I don't have one. Will I be changing my mind, Nope! But ask me again after book 2, I have a feeling Samantha may just have a few tricks and twists coming our way
The Awakening of a Princess is officially available 💖✨️
This one starts off a bit slow and, honestly, a little overwhelming. There's a flood of characters, lore, and world building packed into those opening chapters. I almost felt like I should have been taking notes to keep up. But once the foundation is laid and the story settles, it begins to shine.
We follow Katherine, a young woman who wakes up in a castle with no memory of who she is or why she's there. Her journey is one of unraveling mysteries, piecing together her identity, and stepping into a destiny that feels far bigger than she ever expected. She's vulnerable in the beginning, but never passive. Her arc is gradual and steady, and I enjoyed watching her come into her own.
The elemental champions that surround her add layers to the story. There's slow burn tension and emotional build up as they each bring their own strengths and baggage to the table. No single standout character for me, but the group dynamic worked well and felt believable.
Pacing is thoughtful and measured. This is not a fast moving, action packed read, but it does reward patience. The magic is subtle and steeped in memory, emotion, and quiet power. The setting feels more personal than expansive, which fits the story’s introspective nature.
If you’re into character driven fantasy that takes its time building depth and heart, this one’s worth picking up. Just be ready to push through the dense opening. The payoff is there if you stay with it.
Big thanks to BookSirens and Samantha de la Porté for the ARC ebook copy.
I was chosen to be an ARC reader for The Awakening Of A Princess.
I haven't read anything like this before, it was SO good!
It follows Princess Katherine who has lost all her memories, which is the catalyst for a prophecy to begin and now must go through 5 trials with 5 champions who will fight to fulfill the prophecy. This is book one of five, so I am lead to believe that each book will show each trial.
The magic system is so unique whilst intertwining with modern day technology.
The beginning of the story had me gripped but also a little confused at first, I just couldn't see where the story was going for a few chapters. But I found thats the beauty of this story, you're not given all the information at once, it ripples out throughout the course of the story. Once I hit around 30% of the way through I was hooked! I couldn't wait to finish it! Now I NEED book 2 !
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a unique fantasy with plenty of world building and plenty of plot to keep you gripped.
Katherine wakes up with no idea who she is, her past, or how she got in the castle. A prophecy is stirring where the five trials of fate begins. plus she learns she is a princess?! Yet, a mortal is chosen, and throws everything for a spin. This makes her have to confront her past, unlock her powers, and figuring out if heart over matter is truly the right choice. if you love slow burn romantasy, paranormal, as well as magic realism?? this is the read for you. This is book 1; but that ending...book 2 id a must read now.
This book gave me all the feels....confusion, anger, and even kicking my feet at moments from excitement. This is definetly moderate paced, thoughat times is uneven. I loved all the characters and their role to play; yet at times I found myself having to go back and make sure which character I was on. Worldbuilding instantly sucks you in. Since this is the 2nd-3rd book I've read in the last month with amnesia tropes; im starting to think i enjoy it. I am excited to continue the series, and recommend to friends!
This ARC took me a hot minute to get into it. There was a lot of elemental magic and history revealed in order to set the story and it was a bit heavy to digest but it is definitely required. I'm glad I stuck with it though because once the setting for the story had been placed, it really picked up.
Imagine waking up in an unfamiliar land with no memory of who you are or the life you lived, surrounded by strangers, both mortal and immortal, who claim to know you. That's what happens to Katherine, as she finds herself in a magical castle being told she is the princess involved in a prophecy set to be fulfilled to discover her fated mates, combine their magic to create the ultimate power source and fight against the evil threatening to destroy everything. She must go through a series of challenges with the 5 chosen champions in order to regain her memories, her powers and ultimately claim her destiny.
Since this is only the first book in the series, you are definitely left with more questions than answers as you complete the first challenge and await the next. It is a slow burn romance as you glimpse the different memories of love shared between each champion and wonder who will be fated to become her mate in the end.
I feel privileged to receive an ARC of this book and leave my review voluntarily. I look forward to continuing this series and seeing how the story unfolds
Thank you to BookSirens and Samantha de la Porté for gifting me a copy of The Awakening of a Princess. I am voluntarily leaving a review, and all opinions are my own.
Unfortunately, this novel ended up being a DNF at 32% for me. The Awakening of a Princess starts off with a bang, which really piqued my interest. I love the cover, blurb, concept, and ideas, but I simply could not continue this novel.
First, there is an abundance of characters and POVs that switch too often, which makes it difficult to keep up with who everyone is and whose POV it currently is. This threw me off and overwhelmed me from the beginning, though I overlooked it and continued. Next, the novel becomes highly information-dense before even hitting 25%, which poorly influences how much a reader can immerse themselves in the story. A good portion of the information feels as if it could be outright removed or, at the very least, be incorporated in a much more efficient way. Because I only made it to 32%, there is a chance that some of the unnecessary-feeling information has a meaning, but I cannot be sure. I found myself unable to keep up with the characters and information, and it sadly caused me to lose interest in finding out how this novel ends.
The Awakening of a Princess has a lot of potential, especially if it were to go through a developmental edit or a line and copyedit. The world-building is impressive, and there is clearly immense thought put into this novel, but its need for further editing and/or tweaking is its downfall. Samantha de la Porté has a unique writing voice and a vast imagination, so I hope she finds success with this novel despite it not being for me, because it may very well be what others love.
The world-building was done well, and the overarching plot is interesting, but I struggled to get invested because of all the characters! However, this book is setting up the series for adventure and heartache. I feel like the next instalments will be less overwhelming and more captivating.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I found it very challenging to get into this book. The story is about a princess who must complete five trials as part of a prophecy. The first three quarters of the book are detailed descriptions with little excitement or much happening. Only in the last 50 pages of the book did I start becoming interested in the story. But I was definitely left with more questions than answers. I see the potential in the story and hopefully things pick up in the other books in this series as she completes the other four trials.
I would say 3 stars, maybe 3.5 which is definitely not bad. I can see a LOT of potential for this story, but that first book as is is a little bit disappointing for now, for me.
There are way too many characters, a lot of them only a name, a word here and there, a joke or comedy relief, but not much that makes me want to know more about them, it just loses me like "crap who are you again?". It's okay though, again, that may be a LOT for a first book but it might make more sense once the rest of the story is out, I assume.
Now, for the characters who are developed a lot more :
I WILL be reading the following books, because I can feel this story is going on a path I will like, even if for now there is just way too many mysteries and way too little answers, too many "you shall see"s, too many questions. But, that can be understood if that first book serves as a base for the following ones. (I've read other series where I had to push through the first, first two or even three books before being super hooked, so I've learnt to be patient).
I'm super curious about how the humans fit in all of this, as it's refreshing to read some fantasy with humans also being in the spotlight. And I'm also super curious about the next trials and what they'll be.
(Thanks to my dear friend Manon for recommending this book to me!)
Additional note : I've just found out that Samantha has a full website with all the characters and kingdom listed there, it can honestly be super helpful to keep track of everyone!
Creative wordbuilding that would have been a brilliant read, but I unfortunately faltered trying to get a clear comprehension of the storyline. A prequel about Katherine's mortal life and friends before being kidnapped and taken to Enryndale Castle would have been great as I failed to grasp why her friends, except Bayne, had to be around. Katherine awoke after her resurrection with no powers and amnesia. The 5 contestants were selected for the trial and shockingly Bayne, a mortal, was selected by the Light of Fire and Carter was excluded. A kiss was the 1st trial, with each kiss from a contestant her memories of the person will return and subsequently her powers. Book 1 in the series is quite lengthy with overwhelming magical information and numerous characters. I received an advanced review copy and leave this review voluntary Thank you BookSirens
Samantha de la Porté’s The Awakening of a Princess is a lush romantasy debut that sweeps readers into the magical world of Eyrondale—a place as beautiful as it is mysterious. From the first page, the novel promises a tale of forgotten identities, ancient prophecies, and slow-burning emotion. And while the atmosphere is spellbinding and the premise full of intrigue, the story occasionally loses its footing under the weight of its own ambition.
Katherine, the protagonist, wakes in a majestic castle with no memory of who she is. Her name is the only thing she recognises, and as she’s drawn into the Five Trials of Fate, she must untangle a past that others seem to know more about than she does. It’s a strong concept, dripping with suspense and a palpable sense of longing—but it takes time for the pieces to come together. With Katherine’s amnesia and the fragmented storytelling, it was difficult to connect with her emotionally at first. I found myself waiting for that moment where everything would suddenly click into place. It does happen—but a bit later than I would have liked.
Still, there’s no denying de la Porté’s talent for worldbuilding. Eyrondale is beautifully realised, with vivid descriptions that make the setting feel almost like a character in its own right. The castle and surrounding grounds are so richly drawn, I could easily picture myself wandering its enchanted halls. The writing itself often has a lyrical quality, which suits the tone of the story and enhances the sense of magic that threads through every page.
Where the book falters slightly is in its pacing and structure. The beginning is slow, and while the second half picks up significantly—offering stronger emotional beats and a gripping conclusion—the earlier chapters occasionally meander. Multiple points of view add depth but sometimes distract from the main arc, with a few perspective shifts feeling more like detours than essential insights. There’s a lot of information to absorb, particularly around the magic system and the many characters involved, and at times it became overwhelming rather than immersive.
That said, Katherine is a compelling heroine once her story gains traction. Watching her grow into her power and confront the shadows of her past is rewarding, especially as the layers of her identity slowly peel back. There were moments where I genuinely rooted for her, moments that felt raw and empowering. The romantic elements are subtle and slow-burning, focusing more on emotional resonance than physical intimacy, which gives the story a sense of longing and tenderness rather than easy resolution.
Ultimately, The Awakening of a Princess is a novel with a lot of heart and ambition. It doesn’t deliver all its answers—nor does it try to—but it sets up a fascinating world and a character arc that promises much more to come. While not without its flaws, it’s a story worth sticking with, especially for readers who enjoy fantasy driven by emotion, mystery, and lyrical worldbuilding. With a tighter narrative and more grounded character focus, I have no doubt the rest of The Ashes of Eyrondale series could be truly phenomenal. And yes—I’ll be reading on to see what comes next.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Awakening of a Princess by Samantha de la Porte is a beautifully written and emotionally rich coming-of-age fantasy that blends personal transformation with a sense of magic and mystery. With lyrical prose and deeply introspective character work, this book offers far more than its title initially suggests—it’s a quiet, powerful journey of identity, courage, and inner awakening.
At the heart of the story is the titular “princess,” though the label itself is more symbolic than literal. She’s not just discovering a title or role—she’s discovering herself. De la Porte captures this transformation with grace and nuance, making her heroine both relatable and inspiring. The emotional landscape is thoughtfully explored, particularly around themes of self-worth, inner strength, and finding one’s voice in a world that often expects obedience over individuality.
The pacing is steady and deliberate. This isn’t a plot-driven adventure packed with constant action; instead, it’s a character-focused narrative that allows time to breathe, reflect, and unfold naturally. It’s in the quiet moments—conversations, dreams, reflections—where the real magic of this story lives.
The author’s writing style is poetic, almost dreamlike at times. The language feels elevated yet accessible, and the imagery is vivid without becoming overwhelming. Samantha de la Porte has a clear gift for description, using words to evoke both emotional tone and visual beauty. Settings feel lush and textured, from ethereal gardens to intimate chambers, creating a fully immersive reading experience.
The supporting characters are compelling in their own right, particularly those who challenge or reflect aspects of the protagonist’s journey. Mentors, rivals, and companions all feel like they serve a greater purpose in her evolution, and none of them are flat or overly simplified.
If there’s one area that could be strengthened, it might be in the clarity of certain plot points, particularly for readers who are used to more linear storytelling. However, the abstract nature of the narrative feels intentional and may appeal especially to those who enjoy thoughtful, layered reads with elements of literary fantasy.
In conclusion, The Awakening of a Princess is a soulful and empowering read, perfect for fans of introspective fantasy, emotional journeys, and strong, gracefully written heroines. Samantha de la Porte delivers a thoughtful and rewarding tale of becoming—one that lingers long after the final page.
Samantha de la Porté’s The Awakening of a Princess sweeps readers into a richly imagined fantasy realm full of magic, romance, and ancient legacies. With creative worldbuilding and a dramatic premise—Katherine, an ordinary mortal, is kidnapped and brought to the mysterious Eyrondale Castle—it had all the ingredients of a brilliant fantasy debut. But for me, while the concept was intriguing, the execution left me wanting a bit more clarity and emotional connection.
First, the positives: the world of Eyrondale is beautifully crafted. The setting has that ethereal, enchanted feel that fantasy lovers crave, with secret powers, ancient bloodlines, and a looming sense of destiny. De la Porté has a strong handle on atmosphere, and some of her descriptions are absolutely transportive. There’s also a slow-burn romance element and emotional stakes tied to Katherine’s past and resurrection that had real potential.
Where I struggled was in following the core storyline. Katherine’s sudden kidnapping and resurrection—with amnesia and no powers—created a layer of mystery, but it also made it difficult to connect with her or understand her role early on. I kept waiting for a moment where everything would “click,” but it came a bit too late for me to feel fully invested.
A major issue I had was with the supporting cast. Eight of Katherine’s friends are brought with her to Eyrondale, yet aside from Bayne, I struggled to see why they were included. Their purpose felt unclear, and I would have loved a prequel that gave more time to Katherine’s mortal life and these friendships. That backstory could’ve really helped ground the story and add emotional weight to their presence in the fantasy world.
Despite the confusion, I do think de la Porté has talent and a unique voice. There are flashes of brilliance in the writing and moments of deep emotional resonance. With a tighter narrative and more character development—especially for the friend group—I could see future books in The Ashes of Eyrondale series being very strong.
If you enjoy fantasy with grand romantic stakes, mysterious powers, and atmospheric writing, this may still be worth a try. I just recommend going in with patience and a love for piecing together a complex world.
A Captivating Journey into Eyrondale's Enchanting Realms
I received an E-ARC edition of this book in exchange for my honest review, and let me tell you, it grabbed me right from page one. It throws you into a world of magic and mystery that's seriously hard to put down. The story kicks off with a bang when eight ordinary folks get whisked away to a swanky castle in Eyrondale after their friend, Katherine, just vanishes.
Meanwhile, Katherine wakes up in the same castle with zero memory, except her name. Turns out, she rules one of six kingdoms, and the other five are run by some pretty intriguing princes. There's this ancient prophecy tied to Katherine's power that's starting to stir, setting her off on a quest with five trials to get her memories back and unlock her real strength. This first book brilliantly takes Katherine through her initial trial, where she has to share a kiss with each of the five contenders. And with every kiss, bits of her past start bubbling up, pulling you deeper into this super detailed world of slow-burn romance, magic, and wild twists. The world-building here is just amazing; it feels like you're actually there in Eyrondale.
Honestly, the character building in this book is fantastic! There were so many times I found myself messaging the author, literally asking "WHY?!" or "OMG, why are they..." The characters are all pretty emotional, which is totally understandable given everything they're going through. You'll genuinely feel like you're shouting at the pages, questioning their decisions and reactions. Their depth and complexity really make you invest in their journey, although for me, one character wasn't complex – they were just plain annoying (which is the point, by the way, haha).
What really makes this story shine are all the twists and turns that keep you guessing – honestly, it's almost impossible to pick a favourite contender! The tension is real, and having different POVs adds so much cool depth, letting you see the story from all sorts of fascinating angles. There's so much packed into this book, you'll probably want to read it again just to catch everything you might've missed. If you're into layered, immersive fantasy stories, you're going to love this one.
I was fortunate to receive The Awakening of a Princess as an ARC, in exchange for this honest review.
The Awakening of a Princess tells the tale of Katherine, the lost princess of the magical kingdom Eyrondale. Fate has intervened in her life on Earth - her mortal life has ended and she is transported back to her kingdom, with no memories and a handful of her mortal friends. A prophecy must then be fulfilled, whereby the princes of the other four magical kingdoms, and one of her mortal friends, must compete in trials until one is declared her mate. This book focuses on the first trial, and ultimately returning Katherine's memories and powers to her.
Samantha de la Porté is a hell of a worldbuilder. Eyrondale truly comes alive in her writing, and you can picture the magic and opulence with very little effort.
Ultimately though, this book struggles with a few things - mainly, too many characters, uneven pacing, and the way key information is revealed. The first half of the book flings characters at you at a rate that's almost impossible to keep up with, let alone keep straight, and the story ticks along almost too slowly. Then the trial begins, and the pace increases considerably - and although that's a welcome contrast to the first half of the book, it almost gets to an information overload state.
I am intrigued by the character of Katherine, and how she is portrayed as both light and dark throughout the book - it keeps the mystery of her character rolling even though her memories are returned, as her mortal friends know a different Katherine than the one her immortal friends know. You wonder which will win out? There is also the mystery of which of the five will become her mate, as all of them are so different.
Overall, the story has a lot of promise, and I will be continuing to read the series to find out what the fates have in store for Katherine, but I do feel it could benefit from some further edits to maximise the potential.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!

Wow, what a read! Thank you so much to Book Sirens and Samantha for the E-ARC.
The action started right off the bat on page one with a Saw inspired escape scene, and this pretty much kicked off the mystery of the series as I had NO CLUE what was going on and why. Whilst this book uncovers a few truths, there are many burning questions left unanswered, so many characters we are left still not truly knowing, and the start of a plot not yet fully explained.
The Awakening of a Princess is the first instalment in a slow burn series full of emotional tension, quiet magic, and fate-bound connection. Book one follows the first of five trials to fulfill the prophecy…where Katherine must relive every memory she’s ever shared with each of the five champions to uncover the truth of who she really is. The next few books will cover the remaining four trials to discover which champion is left standing.
Five champions, five relationships over the span of many lifetimes, five torturous kisses. You fall in love which each of them; the best friend who struggles to consider more, the dangerous enemy who everyone thinks is a villain but isn’t, the first love, the complicated love, and the friend who likely covers his trauma with humour. You want to root for each of them! Every trope is in here and it’s hard to pick one, which I think is part of the fun! Wanting to figure this out with all the characters will keep me reading to the end of this series!
“But one kiss was all it took for her descent into madness.”
Tropes include: - Prophecy and fate - Fated but complicated love - Slow burn - Trials and competitions - Immortals and Mortals - Lost Memories - Dark Secrets
This book is a premise / kick off for the rest of the series which includes a lot of details, so it takes patience! If you love a mystery, slow reveals, layered POVs, easter egg hunting and being kept on your toes then this book is for you!
The Awakening of a Princess by Samantha de la Porté The Ashes of Eyrondale, Book 1 Slow Burn Romantasy ARC Review
3.5🌟
First off, a huge thanks to Samantha de la Porté and BookSirens for the eARC—yay for early reads and mysterious princess drama!
This debut fantasy novel introduces a rich and complex world that immediately drew me in with its intriguing premise. Secret kingdoms, magical suitors, a princess with a destiny—check, check, and check. The plot is layered, and the concept of Katherine’s journey surrounded by enigmatic suitors and a mysterious fate has the makings of an epic fantasy tale. There’s no doubt that de la Porté has crafted a universe that feels vast and mythic in scope. Katherine’s personal struggle is compelling, and the mystery surrounding her five suitors adds intrigue and tension. Each suitor has a distinct aura of mystique that kept me curious, even when I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on.
While the worldbuilding and overarching storyline are compelling, the execution left me feeling a bit disoriented. The narrative switches between multiple points of view, sometimes even mid-chapter, which often made it difficult to follow who was speaking or whose perspective I was supposed to be in. At times, even when Katherine was narrating, other characters’ internal thoughts seemed to filter in without clear transitions, which was slightly jarring.
I appreciate the intention behind using the mortal POV as a grounding point for the reader, perhaps to mirror the confusion and awe of discovering this new world, but it didn’t quite land for me.
Overall, The Awakening of a Princess is a book with a fascinating foundation and plenty of potential, especially for readers who enjoy immersive fantasy worlds and intricate plots. With more clarity in POV transitions and character development, future installments could be even more engaging. If you’re a fan of dreamy, intricate fantasy and don’t mind a bit of narrative chaos, this book is a good fit for you.
There’s something quietly powerful about a story that trusts the reader to be as disoriented, curious, and wonderstruck as the characters themselves. That’s exactly what this book does. From the first few chapters, where a flurry of characters and names swirl around Katherine and the reader alike, to the breathtaking trials that follow, this book unfolds with steady grace. While the beginning may feel overwhelming - so many names, so many puzzle pieces - it soon becomes clear that this is deliberate: a mirror of Katherine’s fragmented memory and the uncertain world she’s been thrust into. And once the trials begin? Oh, Bearyani was hooked.
There’s a softness to this story that feels rare. An unfolding of sorts. Katherine is a quiet, complex heroine, one that pulls inward rather than exploding out. She craves solitude not out of coldness, but out of a need to survive the confusion. Alfred, with his warm humor and unhurried wisdom (‘Have a problem? Let’s eat first’), is a delight. The worldbuilding is lush and intentional, and while it may feel heavy for some, Bearyani believes it’s the kind of weight that gives the story its heart. This is a book that draws you in with detail, the gleam of an object, the hush of a space, the rising anticipation of each trial. While it holds no spice, the emotional richness is undeniable. It’s for the romantics who love atmosphere, character depth, and the slow, unfolding ache of discovery. The only reason this isn’t a full five-star review is the sheer number of characters and context thrown at the reader early on - while necessary for the series, it does require some early mental juggling. But once the fog lifts, the journey is utterly worth it. Bearyani is already counting down the pages until book two, because the foundation laid here promises something truly unforgettable.
📖 Enormous thanks to BookSirens and Samantha de la Porté for this ARC, your care and craft shine through every line.
When Katherine is kidnapped, her friends are gathered into safety by mysterious people who claim Katherine is not who they know her as. She's soon returned and suffers a fatal blow - but she's not lost to her friends. Unbeknownst to everyone, including Katherine, she wields godlike magic that she must awaken piece by piece. Her awakening has started the clock on an ancient prophecy and all life hangs in the balance. While those around her try to figure out who she will become, Katherine is focused on two questions: who set the prophecy wheels in motion and to what end?
The Awakening of a Princess is undoubtedly very well written, with plenty of thoughtful descriptives that really set out the visuals in the scenes. Princess Katherine turns out to be a total badass (always here for this theme) who has a tormented back story, involving a number of plot twists and boy drama that she deals with while ruling a kingdom and being in the fray of battle - can we say boss queen?
The narrative and period setting is a little tricky to keep up with, and at times I was reading a 'mortal's' POV wondering where this was going and why; on that note, it was an interesting method to use writing from a less important character's POV, especially when that character doesn't know the ins and outs and back story - does it make them an unreliable narrator that they don't have all the information, or are they learning along with the reader themselves to provide an affinity with the reader?
All in all, it was well written and the characters had a nice range of personalities, but it did start to feel drawn out and slightly anticlimactic at times; it did also get confusing to see modern day features in a setting I would have taken to be olden timey (though the time passed is mentioned briefly and character efforts to 'modernise' the surroundings)
Thanks to Book Sirens and Samantha de la Porté for early ARC access!
