Detroit Free Press called Traveling Circus "a fast-paced, well-designed story about believing in yourself - with a touch of magic thrown in for good measure."
Kidnapped by a mysterious traveling circus! Young Flynn must find his inner courage to battle his way home. A crooked ringmaster, wielding a magic pocket watch that controls time, holds Flynn captive against his will. Escaping requires reaching out to some unusual circus performers. So, he befriends Cordelia who’s cursed to become a mermaid at night and Albert the fortuneteller who has a crystal ball where he can see the future and the past. Using the power of imagination and the fortuneteller's magic, Flynn must escape the circus before the ringmaster erases Flynn's memories forever!

Ingar Rudholm was born and raised in Whitehall. His mother owned Homestead Art Gallery on Mears right across the street from the Howmet Playhouse. His father built and remodeled homes in the Muskegon County area. As a child, Ingar's mother enrolled him in art classes. Thanks to his mother's art gallery, Ingar met several local painters and attended local art fairs from Traverse City to Rockford.
When Ingar isn't writing and illustrating books, he's an engineer for Industrial Assemblies in Fruitport, Michigan, which manufacture's store fixtures and displays for retail chains.
In 2010, Ingar's mother passed away leaving behind a set of brushes, a box of paints, and several art history books (Time-Life Library of Art) . She had dementia, leaving her unable to paint during the final years of her life. Traveling Circus is a tribute to the first artist Ingar ever knew and loved: his mother.
Magical. I always thought of the circus as a magical place. This story is about the circus and is truly magical. So many interesting characters with magical powers. Well-crafted characters who interact in a fantasy set in modern day. Flynn, the main character, reminded me so much of teens today. So much pressure on them causing them to feel insecure so they can't speak up. This is a page-turning novel perfect for young readers and young-at-heart readers.
Mix together teenage angst with a cast of characters with super powers and you get a magical fast-paced romp—-that’s Traveling Circus. But the book is much more than an entertaining story, it’s a series of life lessons.
Two of my favorite lines from the book are, “Imagination is the preview of life’s coming attraction.” And, “Your life can take multiple paths along your journey. Use your mind like a crystal ball and choose your path wisely.”
For anyone trying to figure out their place in this world, the message is to live the life you were meant to live, not the one your parents or anyone else thinks you should live. Father doesn’t always know best.
I just finished this book, and enjoyed it very much! The story kept a very steady pace and held my interest throughout. Although written for a younger crowd, it is an enjoyable read for adults as well. Highly recommended, especially for libraries, schools, and families with young readers. I'm looking forward to more work from this author.
Traveling Circus is a fantastic follow up to the first book in this trilogy! The story line picks right up and makes you want to keep reading. I enjoyed the creativity that is woven into this plot, as it kept me wondering what was going to happen next! It is a quick and enjoyable read that can be read as an adult or young adult. I'm looking forward to the conclusion of this series!
When I met this author he was shy and easy going and had a book he wrote and put some illustrations in. I was fascinated by his work and though he noted it as young adult I bought it anyway.
I know I am a young adult at heart, but I enjoyed this book immensely and have seen the author many times since. (Bad me for not writing a review sooner) he talks about certain elements of the book and is mesmerizing now (his pitch has gotten much better) but he barely scratches the surface of a magical circus and a coming of age story about a boy who finds himself in it.
The characters are well defined and the story is fun and whimsical as it whisks you around a world between fantasy and reality. Younger adults will be enthralled but even us older adults will enjoy the book as we follow Flynn and his adventure.
3.5⭐️ I definitely preferred the first book because I got connected with Cordelia but then they switched povs. But overall it was a good book and will be reading the last one
