That Time I Accidentally Took Over The Mafia

Rate this book
You know those jokes that are like a cat, a dog, and a hamster walked into a bar?

My life's a lot like that, except it's actually... my step-brother, my ex-fiancé, and my boss walked into my kitchen... and then I accidentally took over the mafia.

This is my story.

*****I was living the dream—writing taboo romance novels, living in Seattle, and staying as far away as possible from my estranged father’s massive empire. Then, one morning, I find out my dad’s dead, and surprise—I’m now the heiress the Caputo mafia family.

What. The Actual. Fuck.

Oh, and did I mention my three exes are all part of the mafia? And they’re boyfriends? They’re back in my life being controlling and annoying. Because nothing says ‘romantic chaos’ like the guy who ghosted you after you gave him your V-card, the one who left you at the altar for a four-year prison stint, and the one who screwed your brains out all weekend and then fired you on Monday. Assholes.

It gets better. My home gets blown up (thanks, guys), my best friend’s a mafia spy who’s trying to kill me. (I admit I didn’t see that one coming.) And I have five days to get across the country. Oh, and by the way, my dad was probably murdered, there’s a mafia war going on, and I’m definitely on several hit lists.

Fantastic. It’s just another Sunday morning.

Filled with bad decisions, steamy encounters, and a whole lot of sarcasm, *That Time I Accidentally Took Over the Mafia* is the wildest, most absurd ride you’ll take this year.

Delaney Caputo didn’t go looking for the mafia life. The mafia life went looking for her.

Rebekah Sinclair writes books that bite back.
Dark rom-coms. Greek mythology retellings. Wicked fae. Billionaire antiheroes. Her stories blend unhinged humor, high-stakes heat, and emotional wreckage you’ll thank her for later.

With 11 published novels (and plenty more on the way), Rebekah has built a world of morally gray men, stabby women, and plot twists that hit like a betrayal kink. Whether you’re into serial killers with soft spots, gods who fall too hard, or fae realms soaked in shadow, there’s a love story in her lineup that will ruin you—in the best way.

Off the page, Rebekah is a single mom to five wildly chaotic kids and four fur-babies (two cats, two dogs, all equally dramatic). Writing started as her escape. Now it's her full-blown career, complete with exclusive covers, spicy book boxes, and signings where readers show up wearing eyeliner sharper than her plot twists.

When she’s not writing, she’s probably hiding from her kids in the pantry, pretending to be brainstorming.

Welcome to Rebekah Sinclair’s world.
The spice is high. The stakes are higher.
And no one makes it out emotionally intact.

*Re-Read via Audiobook*
Single Narration and WOW did Laura Horowitz knock it out of the park!! I have already read this book, knew what was going to happen, but getting to experience via audio was AH-MAZ-ING! LOVED IT

What a GLORIOUSLY unhinged, chaotic ride this book is! Picture this: you wake up after the worst one-night stand of your life, and who’s in your kitchen? Your ex-fiancé (jailed on your wedding day—why is he out again?), your stepbrother (it’s complicated, okay, they were together before the whole step thing), and your ex-boss (who you REALLY should’ve called HR on). Oh, and they’re casually flipping pancakes and making eggs like it’s Sunday brunch. Delaney doesn’t even have time to process the fact that these three men are now boyfriends before they’re all, “Your life’s in danger, babe,” and she’s just trying to figure out if she can at least get a second cup of coffee first.

And thus begins the wildest, steamiest adventure that’s equal parts dark romance, laugh-out-loud comedy, and mafia chaos—with a side of spatula appreciation. Because let me tell you, these boys know how to handle more than just a spatula in the kitchen and the bedroom. Trust me: Don’t disrespect the spat.

From that chaotic breakfast table, the story kicks into high gear: blown-up houses, helicopter escapes, cliff tumbles, and a singular but unforgettable murder shed (because every good dark romance needs one). It’s action-packed, funny as hell, and so spicy. Like, someone-call-the-fire-department spicy. Delaney’s trying to stay alive while navigating feelings for these three ridiculously hot men, and let’s be real—there’s not a lot of time to sort out emotions when you’re dodging bullets and sexual tension.

Speaking of sexual tension: every single scene is dripping with it. The chemistry is OFF the charts. And when one of these fine gentlemen looks Delaney dead in the eyes and declares, “I am not a piece of meat,” all she (and we) can think is, Oh yes… yes you are, sir!! (Quick reminder to stay hydrated as you read)

What makes this book stand out isn’t just the spice (though, wow, it delivers) or the mafia vibes (because, yes, there’s plenty of that). It’s the balance of humor, heart, and action. Each of these men has a past, and their personalities shine through in every interaction—whether they’re fighting bad guys or arguing over the last pancake. They don’t rely on Delaney to “complete” them; they’re full, complex characters on their own. But the way they love and protect her and each other? It’s swoon-worthy.

This is MMMF at its finest, with every combination you could want and plenty of moments that’ll leave you laughing, gasping, or fanning yourself (sometimes all three at once). And Delaney? She’s a self-made, no-nonsense, bad*ss heroine who refuses to let her life turn into a rom-com—except, well, maybe just this once.

If you’re looking for a dark romance that’ll have you clutching your thighs, howling with laughter, and begging for more, THIS is the book for you. Mafia vibes, spatula moments, and so much steam you’ll need a cold shower—add it to your TBR right now. Trust me, it’s one hell of a ride! (And while yes, this is a Why Choose, I choose to start with Jax)

DNF at 29% I wasn’t okay with the lack of groveling or even an attempt at forgiveness. It went from exs to boyfriends at light speed. No thank you.

Listen, I gave this 4.5 stars and was going to round down, but I had so much fun I just had to round up. Word of advice: do NOT go into this expecting a series hardcore emotional mafia book, because that’s not what you’ll get and you’ll be disappointed and probably end up hating it. I went in expecting this to be wild and crazy and funny and extra, and you know what? It did not disappoint, I had so much fun reading it, I was laughing out loud, gasping, hand over mouth screaming, putting my little plot hints together, and it was just a blast. It was a perfect amount of spice and story, and the twist actually got me. I highly recommend this one if you want to read something fun!

Im conflicted. On the one hand, this book isn’t for me. On the other, it’s much better than almost all mafia romances I’ve read. It’s funny! It doesn’t take itself seriously. The mafia men are not horrible to her.

Delaney is a 26 year old spicy book author. She lives her life independent from her father and his world. Delaney has been burned by men in her life before, first there was Luca, her first love and first everything who she met at college, after finding out Luca was about to become her stepbrother he fled and has not been seen in 6 years. Then there was Jax, they were about to be married when he was arrested for murder standing at the alter. Finally came Enzo, her boss that she spent one amazing weekend with and came close to falling in love, Monday rolled around and he fired her.
Present day Delaney finds her self waking in her home to the smell of breakfast and her one nighter still there, but when she walks into her kitchen she is shocked to see the three men who destroyed her standing there. They tell her that her father has died and she is now the head of the mafia, something she didn’t know her father was involved with and that people are coming for her and they will die to keep her safe.

This was a good read. I loved the banter, the spice, the relationships between all the MCs. Loved how much of a badass Delaney is. Loved all the men but I think Jax takes the cake.

single pov; it’s about the journey not the destination, unfortunately

I saw this book in a Facebook group … and everyone had raving reviews and being in between books, I was like bet. … it’s boring, it’s mid, it’s mundane… the premise of her exes being boyfriends, riveting… the premise of her being a romance author that has used them as inspiration (prior to knowing they’re all together), promising. Her finding out her estranged dead dad was THE guy in the mafia world and now she’s That Girl ™️, SHOULD BE SO GOOD… but it’s just not!!! The characters seems like they could be great, but eh. Two of the three exes immediately start hooking up without really addressing the elephant in the room. Delaney keeps running face first into danger even when there’s an active gun fight happening, because she can *checks notes* take care of herself… come to find out, surprise, surprise, she cannot! No one is sharing any information in its entirety, why are we Ghost Whispering this and not saying exactly what was said or told??? Eloise gave Delaney some pretty prime information, and yet she didn’t report it back word for word??? They were attacked in middle of nowhere Montana, and then return to Enzo’s home in Montana and nary a concern that they’ll know they’re STILL IN MONTANA!! Not for nothing, you can drive from the west coast to Chicago in three days, I’m not sure why they’re taking so long IF IT IS LIFE OR DEATH… I considered multiple times just DNF’ing but it wasn’t that bad, it just wasn’t good. So I started to skim and skip ahead. “The moment I stopped being his treasure.” This line just kept being repeated and it meant nothing! They didn’t do anything with it, nothing came from it. … she literally had a memory resurface, and she just didn’t share the information?! What is the point?! Why are Luca and Delaney actively working against each other and acting like they aren’t??

“I brought the three of them together, and they fell in love trying to save me. They comforted each other when they couldn’t comfort me, and in sharing me, they formed a love that could last through anything.” The premise is there, the delivery just wasn’t capable.

This book is more about the journey than the destination, and shockingly enough, the good parts and twists come at Chapter Forty-Five and then there’s 49 chapters. How disappointing that the best part is the twist at the end and then it’s suddenly over.

Why couldn’t we see Delaney actually take over the mafia?! It really was boring overall. So unsatisfying. The best part of the whole thing, and we’re doing “here’s what you missed on glee” … “three months later” “six months later” - I want to see what’s happening!! Rest assured there’s always time to give us spice between any number of these people… then the ending… don’t even get me started.

This not being multiple POV but 369 pages, was a choice. This could be someone’s jam, but it is not mine and it was a struggle to read.

So this was fun — the first why-choose, mafia romcom I’ve picked up! The energy was very chaotic, in an action movie starring Cameron Diaz sort of way.

Even though I liked the set up (FMC’s 3 ex-boyfriends reappear to tell her that her father is dead and she’s inherited some mafia head honcho role, plus they’re all sleeping together and want her in the mix too), I starting skim reading from about 45% because… there was too much sex. Yes, I said it. It was 🥵 but I wanted more heart and relationship development that didn’t rely so heavily on sexy times.

This could have been a 4+ star read if I were in a different mood though, so YMMV!

5/5 ⭐️
5/5 🌶️ Lots of explicit scenes. MMMF

This was absolutely filthy in the BEST way possible. Very fun, action packed. This was a great palate cleanser for me after reading a book that I THOUGHT was going to be a why choose that was NOT. There’s lots of murder though…so it might not be a palate cleanser for YOU. This IS a why choose and her boyfriends are boyfriends too. What more could you want??

Content & trigger warnings: anal, assault, attempted murder, blood, breeding kink (lowkey), daddy kink, death of loved one(s), double penetration, exhibitionism, family trauma, group sex, guns, murder, power dynamics, sex by dead bodies (once AGAIN not checking to see if there’s a word for this), torture, toys, triple vaginal penetration

This was so much fun!! So much banter and humor followed my “swoon worthy” spice and romance! These characters were amazing. I loved the why choose even though it’s not normally my favorite thing. The MMC’s were all just absolutely delicious and the FMC is such a firecracker. Loved every second with all of them!

i am so surprised that i couldn’t get through this bc this sounds like something i would highly enjoy. but at 15% she basically already forgave one ex with no grovel. and it sounds like they’re all not going to grovel/be forgiven quickly based on other reviews. this book goes zero to 100 real quick, which doesn’t always bother me, but just didn’t seem to flow well for me here. what was the nail in coffin was when the fmc says “her vagesty”. that was a hard no for some reason.

this is a mmmf and is written in the fmc’s 1st person POV only

"I think I was born loving you because I knew it the second I first saw you."

No lie, I was a little nervous going into this one. I mean it's mafia with a cartoon cover. But my god it's so fitting in the best way possible.

This book was so unexpected. It was hilarious - to the point I was cackling...just ask @carradinedk she got screen captures. It was sexy. It was adventurous. And it's not super heavy in the way a lot of mafia reads can be.

This was the perfect mostly light read when you feel a slump coming on or need a pick-me-up.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ That Time I Accidentally Took Over the Mafia by Rebekah Sinclair is the chaotic, spicy, laugh-out-loud masterpiece I didn’t know I needed! 🤯🔥

This why-choose romance has EVERYTHING:
💥 Mafia madness
💥 Volcanic spice 🌋
💥 Grumpy x Sunshine brilliance
💥 Hilarious banter
💥 A twisty plot with a mic-drop ending that left me screaming, “GO QUEEN, GOOOO!” 👑

Delaney is the ultimate chaotic queen, and I was absolutely obsessed with her! I loved peeling back the layers of backstories with her three guys—each of them had reasons that made sense, and their chemistry with Delaney was PERFECTION. 🖤 And can we talk about “The Spat” (aka Spatula MVP)?! 😂 Iconic.

✨ Quotes I loved or made me laugh:
•“Can I hold my spatula?” I whisper.
•“My ovaries are planning baby registries. Her Vagesty has declared open season, rolling out the red carpet for fertilization.”
•“You’re a bad bitch with a spatula.”
•“If it’s you or them… always make it them.” 🔥

Oh, and that twist at the end?! I did not see it coming! I was left SCREAMING with excitement. Rebekah Sinclair nailed the perfect balance of dark romantic comedy, tension, and unforgettable moments.

The book drops February 7th, so RUN and add this to your TBR! 📚 You won’t regret it. 🙌

I don’t like books that try to be witty and funny. It never lands and I never laugh. I did finish this book though (yay me) it was very cringe. Comedy? No. Made me squint and roll my eyes? Yes.

I wish it explored more of Luka and Lenny’s relationship more. It was so toxic just to be thrown away and “fixed” with a game of 20 questions (it was more like 5).

The book was fine. Lukewarm water at best.

I almost DNF this book, i don’t understand why men can’t grovel, why I don’t see FMC pissed and petty. We have these three gorgeous men who have successfully screwed over our FMC all she can think about is sleeping with them. Though I love it when she lashes out at them, it wasn’t enough times for me. Eventually we got explanations and reasoning but damnnn my eyes were rolling. I got over it around 50% of the book and loved the spicy scenes and the drama. The plot was the background and they were the main focus. If you’re looking for mafia romance this is not it lol, barely any mafia things go down. If it’s mmmf you like with second chance and drama pick this one up.

Adorably funny. The spatula thing? Hilarious, and I love that her guys embraced it as a trauma response and kept it going throughout the story.

There wasn't any grovel bc these guys are unapologetic about their valid reasons for leaving her, but they did show complete turnarounds in wanting to protect her and be in her life.

I didn't like that the ending was just a recap of how she does as a mafia queen, nor did I like that she suddenly had all the answers when a specific person showed up at a pivotal moment but we only found out afterwards as she explained it all.

But honestly, this entire book was more of a romcom than anything, and it was fun to read.

What an absolutely fanstatic wild ride of a book. The inner dialogue of the main female character had me absolutely giggling with every chapter. There was a good balance if humor mixed in with some seriousness, and the spice was so oh la la, got me blushing like a school girl. Overall, it was quite a fun spicy quick read to be had by all.

Peaches and Cream

Oh boy, was this book spicy.
The cream just kept coming 😉

When Delaney's father passes away, her entire life changes. She never planned on becoming involved with her father's business, but she has no other choice when she's a target of the mafia. Don't worry, she has help from the 3 men she least expected it from.

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. There is lots of spice!

I did not expect to enjoy this book so much. It had a fun cover and title. Was it the deepest book ever written? Nope! But holy hell was it hot??? Yes it was! For all of the sexy time in the book it managed to have an enjoyable plot and likable characters. I’ll have to check out some other books by this author! Looking for a fun, easy, hot read???
