Renewing Your Mind: Become More Like Christ

Rate this book
Overcome the Hurts of Yesterday and the Fears of Tomorrow

As people created in the image of God, we have been given the capacity to choose what we do and do not believe. Yet even followers of Christ often stay mired in misguided ways and unhealthy thought patterns.

In Renewing Your Mind , Dr. Neil Anderson reminds us that faith is a journey of growth, and that as we mature in our beliefs, we should experience a total change from the inside out. In this fourth of eight Victory Series studies, you will learn how to allow Christ to rule in your heart, be led by the Spirit, tear down mental strongholds that keep you in bondage, live under grace, and overcome anger, depression, and losses. This study, with six sessions, can be used individually or in a group, and includes a leader's guide, along with illustrations and questions for deeper reflection and practical applications.

We are not called to dispel darkness on our own; instead, being an overcomer means knowing how to turn to the light of Christ, our source of truth. Only in doing so will we win the battle for our minds.

Renewing Your Mind is a Bible study book, not a read-through book. It is designed for individual or small group study. It is organized into six week’s worth of bite-sized lessons. The lay-out reminded me of the scripture in Isaiah 28 that talks about learning precept upon precept, line upon line. This study does that. It was orderly and progressive.

This book is also one small part of a large quantity of Bible study books meant to be studied together and probably in order, too.

For each day there is a suggested passage of scripture to read (not included in the text), a commentary that usually included some sort of word picture, metaphor or analogy that was easy to understand, and questions to stir your thinking intended to help with application.

The question section has room (in the print edition) to write your answers in the book. And this section seemed most suited for small groups, as I found some of the questions to be frustrating or pointless, at least without someone to discuss them with.

The first two chapters (weeks) were foundational in nature and then succeeding chapters (weeks) were focused on specific topics that are common trouble points for many Christians, that is, anger, anxiety, depression, and handling loss.

This book contains lots of nuggets of wisdom and it seemed geared towards for Christians that were believers young in their faith or perhaps those who have not ever learned some basics of the Christian life for whatever reason.

If you are newer to the Christian faith or you teach a Sunday school class or cell group with newer believers check this book out. It may be just what you were looking for!

I am a big believer in good discipleship and helping to mentor and educate new believers. This is a Biblically sound study to help in that process.

This is both an approachable and ... easy to do study while also covering challenging and in-depth topics. Each topic/chapter is very short (usually 1 1/2 to 2 pages of study followed by another 1 1/2 to 2 pages of questions with a lot of space to write answers.

It is designed to be a daily study (each chapter starts with 5 daily assignments for Scripture readings). It could be used in a weekly Bible study with some alterations but the only additional information for teachers is some suggestions about how to run a class that is provided at the end (there isn't a leader's book with more content to flesh out the study further that I know of).

It is written in approachable and fairly simple language except for the quotes - which all seem to be from very early Christian writers (up to about 600 AD).

Since it is referred to so often, I wish the author had included the Steps to Freedom in Christ. I expected it to be listed in the Notes at the end of the book and it wasn't there - although we are led to where you can find it.

I want to thank Bethany House for providing my copy in exchange for my honest review.

Romans 12:2
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Fourth study in the Victory Series of eight levels of growth.

Being a believer in Christ means you must first be rooted “in Him”. Trials in life will cause you to grow spiritually if you are willing to be obedient to God’s will.

In this study Dr. Anderson shows step by step how to renew not only your mind but your faith and how to become more centered in God’s will.

One of my favorite chapters is “Emotional Honesty”. He used Saul and David as an example of un-repented emotional anger. I loved this study because it deals with everyday thoughts and life in general. It brings home how human nature causes us to get ourselves into situations that make us unhappy in our spiritual life, but it also shows how to overcome these situations.

The study is one you won’t want to miss if, just to name a few, you are struggling with emotional insecurity, anger, depression and anxiety topics.

"Becoming a Christian takes a person or persons down a new and different road. Neil T. Anderson explores how we become new creatures in Christ in the book Renewing Your Mind. I mostly felt blessed by the chapters about depression and hopelessness. I felt very moved to read a long paragraph about Leo Tolstoy's battle with depression and his suicidal thoughts. As Neil T. Anderson writes about the names of our battles he gives written journal entry questions at the end of each chapter. The book is user friendly.

Perhaps, I'm suppose to find something wrong with this book to prove my critical thinking cap is on my head. I can not find any complaint with the book. There are chapters about anger, self worth and anxiety. There is a Bell Curve that shows our state of being from the moment we hear about a crisis until we work our way out of the given trauma. I am grateful to have been given this courtesy copy by Bethany House.

Renewing Your Mind is the fourth book in the Victory series by Neil T. Anderson. This study is designed to aid readers to come closer to God; relying on God to lead us and break down mental blocks that keep us from the life God intends for us to lead. The author explores these mental blocks such as depression, loss, and anger. The author teaches through Scripture and adds reflective questions that are designed to get the reader to ponder the author’s points.

As I worked through this book, I thought that the author made some great points on each topic. The Scriptures were very helpful and the questions solidified each chapter. This book is a great beginner in the journey of renewing your mind and I recommend it highly.

Note: I have received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

This is book four in a series of workbooks with the goal of helping Christians become more like Christ. Each book addresses hurdles Christians may come across in their growth an this one deals with wrong thinking and wrong perceptions. It is a six session book and each session has five lessons, to be done during the week. There is a bit of a teaching and then questions to answer. The teaching is very well thought out and practical. I think this book would best be used with a trusted friend or in a small group. Anderson notes that a commitment is required. This workbook is just the beginning.
