I'll never forget reading vol. 4 of the novel and being so miserable because it ended on the biggest misunderstanding between LZ and WWX. I hadn't discovered FTLs at that point so I had to wait months for the final volume. Thankfully, this vol. does not end the same way!
This volume includes -the scene I've watched over and over in The Untamed and sob every time- when JC and LZ find out about WWX's core -the ancestral hall scene -drunk LZ and the chickens -the bath scene (censored but still okay) -the confession that gives me second hand embarrassment even though I love it.
I LIKE YOU! YOU'RE ESPECIALLY WONDERFUL! I FANCY YOU! I LOVE YOU! I WANT YOU! I CAN'T LEAVE YOU! I FEEL EVERYTHING FOR YOU! I WANT TO GO ON NIGHT HUNTS WITH YOU FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!
“你特别好。我喜欢你。” “You’re amazing,” Wei Wuxian said. “I like you.”
“……”
“或者换个说法。心悦你,爱你,想要你,没法离开你,随便怎么你。” “Or to phrase it another way—I adore you, love you, want you, can’t bear to part from you—I’ll have you in whatever way you’ll have me.”
“……”
“我想一辈子都和你一起夜猎。” “I want to night-hunt with you for the rest of my life.”
Truly one of the most brain-changing confessions of all time. Wangxian literally changed the trajectory of my life. Guanyin Temple confession scene, you will always be famous! And above is one of my personal favorite translation version of that scene.
This book has the climax of the story in it. It's my favorite moment. We all find out just how amazing WWX is. His sacrifice for his brother is everything. No other cultivator would have done that.
That being said, this manga covered the material, but it was completely and totally rushed and didn't let the scene breath and it took awake the emotional impact from the scene. It should have double the panels and really shown the emotional impact on LZ and Jiang Chang.
We also have the final crowd mobbing Yiling and wanting to take down WWX. He is so calm and he just deals with them. They can't see how much they are manipulated by people. It's so easy to do. They make it to lotus pier and two women tell a story and then, they are off again being manipulated to attack someone else. They just have no ability to think for themselves. People feed them what they want. It's extraordinary. That's why MXTX wrote this story. It's about people online attacking people in comments. We see the mass of cultivators as the masses online who take bait and jump on the latest thing. It's marvelous how well she did that.
My favorite part of this is WWX and LZ are in the hall of ancestors doing their bows and WWX in his head is telling the ancestors to help him catch his man. Help him reel him in. It's so wonderful. He knows he's in love. This got that right.
Then we are off to the Kwan Yin temple. WWX and LZ are flirting and having their night of pranks. Finally, finally, at the very end, the misunderstanding between the two men is resolved. It was well done.
It's the best book of the series, but most of these really big moments were rushed and bulldozed over. The impacts were lost on many of them. That's a real shame. They could have added a volume, or increased the size and made it much better.
I also found out this is 13 volumes. I'm disappointed. They aren't doing the extras. How very sad. I wanted to see the extras, which are the best extras of any danmei in my opinion. It should have three more volumes to make 16, if you ask me.
Still, this is my favorite volume. I love it. This is why it's my favorite story in the whole world. I just love it.
This is the volume that has some of the most satisfying parts for the story so far. This is the volume that our two leads finally understand each other's feelings. Of course they can't get a moment to themselves to deal with their feelings because of all the conflict going on but that's okay, it's something to look forward to in the conflict ends in the next volume. Some of my favorite scenes from the novels were in this volume, I can't help but absolutely adore all of the shenanigans that happen whenever Lan Wangji gets drunk! This particular round is the best of all of them and only gets better when Wei Wuxian finally gets the missing information from his past life revealed to him. It's just so many beautiful moments in this particular volume... It feels a lot like you're getting the payoff for the emotions you've invested along the way. I can't wait until the next volume comes out! Although I guess I don't have a choice since it's not out for a few more months... At least I already read the novels so I'm not going to fade away waiting lol.
I lucked out finding this a little earlier than the expected release date, which saves me a trip next week. This volume is heavily edited from the novel given the explicit content, however, readers who pay attention should still be able to pick up the hints from what little is shown, especially given the discussion later on in the temple. We're coming close to the end of the current arc with all of the main characters gathered in the temple, but it's still early in events where this volume leaves off, meaning there's still plenty of content for the next volume, even without considering the side stories at the end of the series. Wuxian's expressions are especially hilarious in this volume as he finally makes a few realizations of this own, as well as learning just what he has forgotten from their shared past and how it has influenced their interactions today.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Why do these books keep trying to destroy me emotionally?! In this volume we get the reveal about Wei Ying's golden core and the confession in the temple. Of course, arriving at the temple is the beginning of the end... I'm not ready to say goodbye to this story again!
Even though this is technically not published yet, I have read the online manhua and absolutely love it! I cannot wait to buy the physical editions (Seven Seas take all my money!!!)
