I'll never forget reading vol. 4 of the novel and being so miserable because it ended on the biggest misunderstanding between LZ and WWX. I hadn't discovered FTLs at that point so I had to wait months for the final volume. Thankfully, this vol. does not end the same way!
This volume includes -the scene I've watched over and over in The Untamed and sob every time- when JC and LZ find out about WWX's core -the ancestral hall scene -drunk LZ and the chickens -the bath scene (censored but still okay) -the confession that gives me second hand embarrassment even though I love it.
I LIKE YOU! YOU'RE ESPECIALLY WONDERFUL! I FANCY YOU! I LOVE YOU! I WANT YOU! I CAN'T LEAVE YOU! I FEEL EVERYTHING FOR YOU! I WANT TO GO ON NIGHT HUNTS WITH YOU FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!
“你特别好。我喜欢你。” “You’re amazing,” Wei Wuxian said. “I like you.”
“……”
“或者换个说法。心悦你,爱你,想要你,没法离开你,随便怎么你。” “Or to phrase it another way—I adore you, love you, want you, can’t bear to part from you—I’ll have you in whatever way you’ll have me.”
“……”
“我想一辈子都和你一起夜猎。” “I want to night-hunt with you for the rest of my life.”
Truly one of the most brain-changing confessions of all time. Wangxian literally changed the trajectory of my life. Guanyin Temple confession scene, you will always be famous! And above is one of my personal favorite translation version of that scene.
"You're especially wonderful! I like you! I fancy you! I love you! I want you! I can't leave you! I feel everything for you! I want to go on night hunts with you for the rest of my life!"
Coming back to this volume felt emotional for me, mostly because it took a while to return to this part of the series. It’s clear that the story is moving toward its ending in the next book, and this volume carries that sense of momentum from the start. A lot happens, and the pacing never drags. I stayed engaged the entire time, even during quieter moments, because everything feels purposeful. One thing I did notice was that the papapa scene was skipped. I honestly can’t remember if it was part of the original chapters or something added later as special material, but its absence stood out to me given how emotionally intimate this stretch of the story is. Even without it, this volume still feels full and intense, with very little wasted space.
What stood out to me most in these chapters was how emotionally exposed both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji feel. Wei Wuxian’s humor and recklessness are still there, but they don’t fully hide what’s underneath anymore. A sense of nostalgia runs through his thoughts, and even small, casually mentioned memories carry weight. What affected me most was how uncomfortable he is with being loved. He jokes, flirts, and deflects when things get close, then pulls back the moment he thinks he might have wanted too much. His instinct to minimize his feelings and apologize for them felt painfully human. When he finally speaks honestly later in the volume, it isn’t elegant or romantic. It’s blunt, impulsive, and sincere, and that honesty made it land. Lan Wangji balances this through quiet consistency. His affection shows up through steady presence and action. He notices details, stays close, and protects without hesitation. The moments where his restraint cracks feel meaningful and revealing, showing how deeply he has been listening all along. His devotion carries weight because so much of it goes unspoken.
As a whole, this volume feels like the emotional center of the story. It deepens relationships, reframes earlier dynamics, and brings long simmering feelings closer to the surface. The tension comes from miscommunication, repression, and unspoken loyalty, which will resonate with readers who enjoy emotionally driven stories and complicated romance. The payoff is rooted in character and emotional honesty, and it rewards readers who have been invested from the beginning. I didn’t love every part of this volume, but I appreciated how clearly it laid out the emotional core of the series and prepared the ground for what comes next.
Oh, thank god! I'm past that traumatic event already! I was a little bit agitated on the course of this volume, thinking it would end at the same cliffhanger as that traumatic light novel volume 4. I just don’t think I would be able to handle the pain a second time (however familiar I may already be about it.) Oh, praise you, praise you! Your mother loves you! Nothing is served best than Wangxian's lovey-dovey, miscommunication-free, era. I think I will be able to sleep soundly tonight and smile while waiting for the final volume! That confession and the cushion scenes still sends me flying! I'm so in love with them, really!
always forget im a wangxian disliker when the confession scene (and actually the whole of guanyin temple) comes on like oh my goddddd this peak😭😭😭😭😭😭😭also the forehead kiss broooooo
THE BEST VOLUME SO FAR!!! we got love confessions in such a dramatic way (plus a little action oop) and they are so freaking adorable together, amazing <3
This is the volume that has some of the most satisfying parts for the story so far. This is the volume that our two leads finally understand each other's feelings. Of course they can't get a moment to themselves to deal with their feelings because of all the conflict going on but that's okay, it's something to look forward to in the conflict ends in the next volume. Some of my favorite scenes from the novels were in this volume, I can't help but absolutely adore all of the shenanigans that happen whenever Lan Wangji gets drunk! This particular round is the best of all of them and only gets better when Wei Wuxian finally gets the missing information from his past life revealed to him. It's just so many beautiful moments in this particular volume... It feels a lot like you're getting the payoff for the emotions you've invested along the way. I can't wait until the next volume comes out! Although I guess I don't have a choice since it's not out for a few more months... At least I already read the novels so I'm not going to fade away waiting lol.
I can't believe there is only one more volume!!! I totally love this volume because so many things are happening. Unfortunately some things are rushed but nothing can replace the impact of the novel. for example, two more pages focused on the core revelation would have been marvelous. I'd like to see Jiang Cheng's pain as well as Lan Zhan's agony. The bathtub scene was marvelous ^^ and then we have the misunderstanding. Wei Ying thinking he took advantage of Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan thinking he forced Wei Ying.
I'll never stop being angry at Xichen. the man has the audacity to share his brother's love life around and then he goes and blames the person who suffered in the hands of his trusted person. like sorry for being catatonic and almost dying while your brother was saving and confessing to me. next time I'll do better. I'm 100% sure Lan Zhan would be angry if he knew Xichen called Wei Ying his only mistake.
of course we have the confession <3 and one of my most favourite parts...Lan Zhan's smile <3
I lucked out finding this a little earlier than the expected release date, which saves me a trip next week. This volume is heavily edited from the novel given the explicit content, however, readers who pay attention should still be able to pick up the hints from what little is shown, especially given the discussion later on in the temple. We're coming close to the end of the current arc with all of the main characters gathered in the temple, but it's still early in events where this volume leaves off, meaning there's still plenty of content for the next volume, even without considering the side stories at the end of the series. Wuxian's expressions are especially hilarious in this volume as he finally makes a few realizations of this own, as well as learning just what he has forgotten from their shared past and how it has influenced their interactions today.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Why do these books keep trying to destroy me emotionally?! In this volume we get the reveal about Wei Ying's golden core and the confession in the temple. Of course, arriving at the temple is the beginning of the end... I'm not ready to say goodbye to this story again!
the bathtub scene!!!!! the confession!!!!!! the WWX JC arguments/confessions!!!!!!
“FANCY YOU…LOVE YOU, WANT YOU..CAN'T LEAVE YOU...DON'T WANT ANYONE BUT YOU. IT CAN’T BE ANYONE BUT YOU.” i wanna cry and scream until i throw up or die
Nothing says romance like being held hostage and yelling to everyone around you how much you want to sleep with the guy you have feelings for because the 2 of you had a misunderstanding 💅🏻 (bonus point that the art style for this volume is perfection)
