Gerard Francis Conway (Gerard F. Conway) is an American writer of comic books and television shows. He is known for co-creating the Marvel Comics' vigilante the Punisher and scripting the death of the character Gwen Stacy during his long run on The Amazing Spider-Man. At DC Comics, he is known for co-creating the superhero Firestorm and others, and for writing the Justice League of America for eight years. Conway wrote the first major, modern-day intercompany crossover, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man.
A great run on Thor by Gerry Conway and John Buscema. Buscema was the artist on the first issue of Thor I ever read and his version of Thor will always be definitive for me. I loved Conway’s bringing in Hercules to be Thor’s ‘sidekick’ for a bunch of these issues as they have a great dynamic (just don’t tell Herc I called him Thor’s sidekick). The only slight fly in the ointment with this volume is that there’s a couple of issues drawn by Rich Buckler, whose Kirby-derivative style can’t hold a candle to Buscema’s.
The Marvel Masterworks volumes are fantastic reprints of the early years of Marvel comics. A fantastic resource to allow these hard to find issues to be read by everyone. Very recommended to everyone and Highly recommended to any comic fan.
The Thor books of this period do very long and interesting stories. Much longer stories than in its contemporary Marvel comics. Of all the long-running Marvel books, Thor struggled to find its footing and hit its stride, especially early on, as you find out by reading the introductions to these books. It is about here that Thor in the John Buscema era really sparks some magic. Vol. 14 will improve on this and Vol. 15 is even better than that. Bronze age Thor is awesome fun.
