When I read the first book in the Dylan Dover series, I was completely captivated by every part of it. The action was incredible, the characters were ones that you could really care about and route for, the world-building was very well-done, and I could just go on and on. The new book in this series, Dylan Dover: Orion’s Quest has completely surpassed the first story in so many ways and it is one that all kids should read if they are a huge fan of the fantasy genre (actually adults should spend time with this series as well… it is just that good).

As Orion’s Quest begins Dylan, Remy, and Seth are finally together and attempting to not only figure out how to locate their fourth lost sibling but also trying to learn more about their powers and about each other as their bond begins to deepen. Not to be left out, Thea is still a large part of the story and her friend’s lives, along with shapeshifters Halle and Oliver and the little fireball Via. Having broken Seth out of the fortress of the wicked vampire Baltazar, the brothers and Thea are hiding in the human world near Dylan’s old home as they try to figure out their next moves. The boys must find the fourth sibling, their sister Siri, so they can find a way to fulfill an ancient prophecy and save the magical world from evil, not to mention themselves and so many old and new friends.

There is so much to love about Orion’s Quest but, at least for me, the best part is the huge focus this author has put on the emotional relationships of the characters in the story. To watch as the brothers read each other’s thoughts and learn more and more about each other is simply riveting. Of course, as their bonds grow stronger, so do their powers, and that is a learning experience in itself. Add in the fact that we get to explore more about Thea and her past and watch as her life completely changes due to a huge surprise, the emotion just keeps coming and is overwhelming.

Of course, as a reader of fantasy, the one thing I want is plenty of action and an interesting and different plotline. Lynne Howard definitely delivers. The storyline is creative and exciting. The introduction of new characters is flawless and each one definitely belongs and adds so much more to the story and to the returning characters’ lives. In the first book, the building of the magical world was such an interesting and fun part of the story. In this new book that continues, of course, but it is also interesting to have the characters exploring so many parts of the human world this time? From New York City to Alaska, the kids and their adult and animal companions get into so much trouble and accomplish so many good things. It is such a joy to be a part of the journey.

When you add in a few unexpected and really fun twists and turns, just enough humor, excellent backstories introduced for the new and old characters, and a fabulous villain in Baltazar (who is a great character although one that you will not like very much), Orion’s Quest is a completely captivating story that any reader will not be able to put down. Every scene is well-written and very detailed and so well worth the time you will spend reading it. The only problem with the story is the fact that I now have to wait for the next installment to find out what comes next, and I don’t want to wait. This is a do not miss story for children and adults as well. 5 stars!!!

Dylan Dover: Orion’s Quest is the second book in a fantastical middle-grade series that continues the story of Dylan, a twelve-year-old warlock who finds himself part of an ancient prophecy tied to the fate of an immortal realm. In this sequel, Dylan and his twin Remy, along with their friend Thea and newly found sibling Seth, try to uncover the mystery of their origins and the powerful forces seeking to control them. It’s a high-stakes magical adventure filled with secret societies, time rifts, magical creatures, and the looming threat of a vampire named Baltazar who’s bent on domination. The story blends the mundane human world with a richly imagined supernatural dimension, making for a fast-paced and emotionally engaging ride.

What I liked was the smooth way Lynne Howard mixes heart and suspense. The opening chapter had me hooked—Reus trembling in front of Baltazar, trapped in a cage, hopeless, and yet somehow clinging to the idea of redemption. It’s grim, but not overly dark. Howard knows her audience. Her writing walks that fine line between magical fantasy and grounded emotion.

Howard also shines in how she handles character dynamics. Dylan, Remy, Seth, and Thea each have distinct voices and believable relationships. One of my favorite parts was when the kids return to Dylan’s old neighborhood.

There’s a lot of dialogue unpacking backstory and prophecy details. It doesn’t drag exactly, but I found myself wanting more action or surprises in those parts. That said, the scene where the kids build an invisible cabin in the forest was very cool. Also, Dylan conjuring up a warm coat and diamond-studded boots for his cat was adorable and imaginative. I loved how the magic was practical, emotional, and at times, pretty funny too.

Dylan Dover: Orion’s Quest is a blast. It’s clever, warm, and packed with both heart and high fantasy. It's perfect for middle-grade readers who love Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, or Keeper of the Lost Cities. I’d even recommend it to grown-up fantasy fans looking for something sweet, mysterious, and a little nostalgic. If you like magical prophecies, talking animals, and the power of found family, this one’s for you.

Having been utterly captivated by the first entry in the Dylan Dover saga, my anticipation for the = sequel was practically bubbling over. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! This second installment is just as magnificent as the first, defying the common trope where sequels often lose their initial spark. Instead, it maintains the same level of excitement, masterful writing, and unexpected twists that left me on the edge of my seat. It’s refreshing to find a sequel that feels like a fully realised story in its own right, rather than a mere bridge to the next chapter.

The narrative dives deep into the realm of the supernatural, showcasing characters who evolve into their formidable roles with grace and intensity. The author’s vivid descriptions are so immersive that you can practically feel the characters’ emotions and experiences as if you were walking in their shoes. This level of detail is a hallmark of exceptional storytelling; it sweeps you away into a meticulously crafted world that feels both familiar and fantastical. The contrast between the two worlds explored in the story adds an intriguing layer, making the journey all the more compelling.

What else sets this tale apart is its rich assortment of themes that go beyond the classic good versus evil dichotomy. The characters are imbued with emotional depth, grappling with friendship, love, and loss, which creates a personal connection to their journeys. It’s such a fantastic read for children, not only for its engaging plot but also for its impressive vocabulary that can enrich young minds. Overall, this book is a triumph, and I find myself eagerly counting down the days until the next adventure unfolds!

Dylan Dover: Orion’s Quest is everything you want in a sequel—expanded world building, rich and detailed character backstories, increased focus on relationships, and a cliffhanger ending sure to leave readers eagerly awaiting the third instalment in the Dylan Dover series.

With an increased cast of characters (such as Mai, Ella, and Lilly), numerous new settings (from NYC to Mexico to Alaska), and more magic than ever before, Orion’s Quest expands on the rich tapestry established in the first novel. Lynne Howard brilliantly weaves together various storylines and timelines in order to tell a story that feels immersive and real for readers. The expansion of the triplets’ (or quadruplets) powers is well-paced, creative, and adds an element of anticipation.

I particularly love how Howard takes mythical creatures and beings that have been well-represented in the fantasy literary canon, and twists the lore in a way that is creative and refreshing. Her portrayal of vampires is unlike anything I’ve read (and I’ve read a LOT of fantasy). Her ability to take something that is traditional and well-established and still find a fresh take, is really impressive and compelling.

The pacing of this book is fairly quick which keeps readers on their toes. It is definitely a book that quickly and expertly immerses the reader into the world, and as a result makes it hard to put down.

Without spoiling the ending, I just have to say that it was action packed, shocking, and left me begging for more.

Once again, Lynne Howard cements Dylan Dover firmly in the children’s fantasy canon. Fantasy readers of all ages will love this book series and I cannot recommend it enough!

“Nothing is going to happen to you, now that we’re together. I just feel… I don’t know… like invincible when we are together.”

This quote sums of the spirit of adventure, power and love that guide Dylan and his brothers along their quest in Dylan Dover:Orion’s Quest. The sequel picks up right where the first the first book leaves off. Yet, right away the world expands well beyond what we could have imagined!

Everything we loved from the first book is back and it feels like you’ve been reunited with old friends. Dylan, Remy, Thea, and their shapeshifting friends once again charm the readers with their fun banter and positivity as they push forward to find the truth of the prophecy and locate their missing sister. However, the world expands as the brothers meet new characters and explore new places in both the mortal and immortal worlds. From the exuberance of trying a cheeseburger for the first time, to the dangers of challenging the menacing Baltazar, this book has all the heart, humour and intensity that any reader of fantasy wants to see. As the stakes get higher the brothers’ bond, and power, continues to grow. By jumping between familiar and new worlds, Howard continues to add new elements to the fantastical world she has built while always inviting the readers in. For anyone who is seeking the next best fantasy series, this is the perfect one!

Dylan Dover: Orion’s Quest is a confident and engaging adventure that blends coming-of-age themes with a sense of wonder and momentum that never lets up. From the outset, the novel establishes a clear emotional throughline: a young protagonist stepping into a world larger, stranger, and more demanding than anything he has known before.

What stands out most is the balance between action and character growth. Dylan’s journey is not just about completing a quest, but about learning responsibility, courage, and self trust as challenges escalate. The pacing keeps the story accessible and exciting, while the underlying themes give it staying power beyond the immediate plot.

The worldbuilding is imaginative without being overwhelming, making the novel especially welcoming to younger readers and those who enjoy adventure driven fantasy with a strong moral core. The sense of discovery both external and internal anchors the narrative and keeps readers invested in Dylan’s success.

Dylan Dover: Orion’s Quest will particularly appeal to readers who enjoy quest based fantasy, heroic journeys, and stories where growth and bravery are earned step by step.

Great stuff! This thrilling novel picks up right where the last one left off. Howard manages to naturally blend in a lot of "recap" to help readers recall where we left Dylan and his friends the last time, so it was easy to follow. This book gives us a lot more of a "behind the scenes" look into the political roots of the immortal world, and it all unfolds in an exciting way that makes you want to keep turning the pages—as Dylan and his crew work to uncover the truth, the reader comes along for the ride.

Howard expands the world from Book 1 in all kinds of unexpected directions, all with the same captivating attention to detail that makes it all feel vivid and real. We also get a fifteenth-century vampire drama along the way—Howard's world truly has it all!

My 9 year old grandson loved the first book of the series so he was very excited when I gave him the second book "Orion's Quest" Not surprisingly he was not disappointed. He was completely engrossed in the story and he particularly enjoyed the many places in the "human world" that the characters travelled to throughout the novel. He loved the adventure and the addition of the Greek god Orion. He now is eagerly awaiting book 3.
You don't have to be a youngster to enjoy this book. Anyone into witches and sorcerers and super heroes will love this book. There are lots of adventures to be enjoyed!
