A few days before Daniel Haze is to be married, he and Jason Redmond are drawn into society’s sordid underbelly when the son of Essex’s most violent crime boss is found dead in an ancient wood. They must wade through a long list of suspects to determine who hunted down Tristan Carmichael and murdered him in a way that was surely a message to his powerful father.
With members of the criminal organization infighting to gain control, Jason and Daniel must solve the case before there are more casualties—including Daniel’s wedding.
To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.
Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

I do believe I have come to the end of following Redmond and Haze and their adventures/challenges. It was difficult for me to continue reading at times. A murder takes place, the duo attempt to solve whilst also making final arrangements for the wedding to take place.
Normally I dive in to each new Redmond and Haze mystery reading daily till the end. I found this one hard to keep turning the pages. Daniel seemed to be made more clueless and subservient to Jason’s directions as if Jason is the lead detective. I just couldn’t find the normal care for what happened to the victims or the main characters as normal.
Not as good as the others, but okay. I'm still disappointed that Daniel hasn't had a chance to solve a murder. He needs to learn how to fight and get rid of his insecurities. The new book to follow seems interesting.
I've read and loved this entire series, but this particular book was even more exceptional than previous books. It held my attention from the first page to the last. I was sorry when I reached the end. There's a murder of a powerful, evil man and Daniel and Jason believe that even though the man was evil, murder is murder and should be solved and the murderer should pay for their crime. From there, nothing goes according to plan or is as simple as they thought. This murder is not business as usual. And Daniel is getting married on Saturday, so if it not solved by then it likely will never be. It's really after they decide to stop investigating that the real excitement starts. By the end of the book, I was very satisfied with the decisions that Jason and Daniel made in their investigation. I look forward to the next book.
This book was a disappointment for me. Daniel is still insecure in his position, still harping on about Sarah, just plain naïve. And once again, Jason is the one to find the actual killer. After 15 books Daniel's character has not really developed, where as Jason's character has developed exponentially. Maybe in future books Flora will have a profound effect on Daniel and his character will grow and exorcise his insecurities. The plot / storyline was mediocre, with a surprise revelation at the end as if it would make up for everything that was lacking in the story. I am surprised at my own review. I didn't dislike the book, but I also didn't like it as much as the previous books in the series. As the next book is not out yet, I think I need to cleanse my reading palate. Love the series, just not this book.
This latest Redmond and Haze book might be the most harrowing one ever. Threats to and murders of good and evil men, women, even children, carried out by career criminals, jaded lovers and seekers of justice. Many actions, many reasons for men and women’s inhumanity to man. Stories of greed, ambition, love, and hate abound. Dear reader don’t dwell on trying to figure out “ who done it”, just go along for the bumpy ride. Then as fans of Redmond and Haze enjoy the happy amazing ending as a precursor to the next book. Well done Ms. Shapiro!
This is another exceptional entry in an outstanding mystery series! I started reading the first book as soon as it was written and closely and impatiently wait for the next story! All the wonderful characters have grown and developed their characters.with each new story! Many old friends from their home area are involved in the murder of a vicious individual! Lots of suspects , no evidence, and many suspects make an entertaining and exciting adventure!
As usual Redmond and Haze do not disappoint. A fantastic read right to the end. I was not sure who the culprit was until the end…..I enjoy seeing Daniel finally getting some happiness and becoming less rigid. I hope to see his character evolve now that he is married to a feisty lady.
What an unpleasant surprise when Micah and Tom find the body of the son of the local crime lord. This was not a gift for Daniel's upcoming wedding. Jason and Daniel take the case since tbe local constabulary would have been overwhelmed. The closer that they get to the wedding, the murkier the case becomes. Smashing ending.
I enjoy these books and the detective duo but more often than not it seems like Jason solves the crime and Daniel, who’s the actual detective, is just along for the ride. Also seems like Jason picks and chooses what laws to follow as it suits him. I’ll read the next one, but if it’s more of the same issues I think it might be my last.

I always enjoy getting reacquainted with the characters in this series. I love the interactions between the two main characters as well as their family and friends. The mystery I also found interesting and it kept my attention. I look forward to the next installment.
Daniel really struggles with his former mother-in-law, but someone else's misfortune becomes her blessing. Jason discovers the killer is someone that he knows, but he shows compassion because they were defending themselves. Why send them off to prison? Daniel has many misgivings and appears to be stuck in a time warp. Were it not for Jason, he would experience no growth. He has limited critical thinking skills.
Irina Shapiro does not disappoint. The Redmond Haze series continues to blend a mystery with the personal lives of the inspectors and close others. I feel I know the characters. The story is strong, character excellent. Thank you to the author!
This book is full of twists and turns. Really keeps your interest. Warning: once you start it, you won’t put in down, so don’t read at night unless you can go with no sleep!
How do you judge a moral murder? Let Redmond and haze take you on that journey in this book. Fantastic storyline with both lead characters... As always! Enjoy this tantalizing mystery until the very end
Irina Shapiro is an excellent writer who always keeps the reader intrigued! Her characters bring out the trials, tribulations and, yes, the joys of life in the later 1800s. I have read many of her books and each has brought gladness.
Jason and Daniel manage to solve another crime just before Daniel gets married to Flora. Lots of little strings left, so sounds like another story in the making!
The conclusion felt rushed and lack luster. After all these options and dead ends, the ending was not as satisfying as it could be. It just ended, no wrap up, straight to the wedding scene, done.
