A power to bring them together and to tear them apart.... When We Whir, a young adult contemporary fantasy novel about seventeen-year-old twins, Clara and Cole, who discover that they have supernatural powers whenever they're together. For Cole, their powers mean high school sports glory and daydreaming of vigilante heroics. For Clara, they mean unanswered questions, fears and rules. While Cole basks in their newfound potential, Clara initially copes through denial and cynicism, but all that changes when they open their grandmother’s dusty old book. Hidden in the pages of ancient Viking text, they discover the secret to unlocking rooms in their minds where they can learn to control and enhance their powers. When the twins’ grandmother goes missing, Cole and Clara must embark on a rescue mission to Iceland where their skills with the powers and their trust in each other are pushed to the limits.
A few quibbles keep it shy of five stars. Mid-book exposition slows momentum just as the stakes should crest, and the ending leaves several threads dangling a bit too openly for readers who crave a full-circle resolution in book one. Still, at 378 pages the story rarely drags, and its cliff-adjacent finale practically begs for a sequel.
Twins are about to find they have special powers, her brother uses it to get far in sports while she hides it from everyone. They will find a dusty book where they will learn more about their powers. See how they get on I received an advance copy from hidden gems and a brilliant read
A unique twist on magic and myth. Definitely a few twists and turns I had no expected. I can see some potential in a series that delves deeper into these characters and this magic system.
