Welcome to Midnight Harvest, a collection of chilling short stories that will crawl under your skin and linger long after the last page, Each tale is a doorway into a world where the familiar turns sinister, and the light of day offers no sanctuary.
From cursed fields where nothing grows but despair, to shadowed corners where unspoken horrors dwell, these stories will keep you awake at night. Beware the scarecrows that move when they shouldn't, the whispers that rise from empty fields, and the strange, crimson moon that watches it all.
Midnight Harvest isn't here to make you laugh-it's here to make you look twice at the darkness and wonder what might be looking back. Are you ready to reap the terror?
Just finished Midnight Harvest in one sitting—devoured it in an hour because I could not put it down! 5 stars, easy. Note to self: never piss off a leprechaun. Also, his version of BonziBuddy? Nightmare fuel. Do y’all remember that purple gorilla? Yeah, staying far away from him now. Every story was solid—I can’t even pick a favorite. Creepy, fun, and just the right amount of what did I just read?! Highly recommend!
Thank you to Don Campbell for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. Rating: 4 stars. Genre(s): horror, short stories, sci-fi.
Overall impression: a series of fast-paced and high-impact standalone horror short stories. For such few words, I was impressed with the level of world-building, character diversity and plot uniqueness. I only wish some of the stories were a bit longer because I didn't want them to end! I really enjoyed Don's collection and can't wait to read his other work.
Tropes: ➵ Isolated location ➵ Stranded in a research station ➵ Lost at sea ➵ Slow descent into insanity ➵ Small town ➵ Masked villagers ➵ Cult festival ➵ Run for your life ➵ Serial killer ➵ Amnesia ➵ App that won't delete ➵ No happy-ever-after (HEA)
⤷ Plot: Midnight Harvest contained a series of standalone short horror stories that covered different themes, tropes and time periods. They were all very fast-paced and hit the main plot points quite quickly, making them fairly predictable. I do wish some of the stories were stretched out a bit longer because I was having such a good time listening to them that I was left wanting more.
My favourite stories were Grey Sleep and The Harvest. I really enjoy stories set in isolated or small town locations because they give off a creepier feel and these two didn't disappoint!
⤷ Characters: The main characters all had different personalities and backgrounds, which made each story feel unique and interesting. Not all of the characters were perfect and their flaws added to their complexity a lot.
⤷ World-building: Despite being short, I was able to quickly immerse myself in each of the worlds created in the stories. No two words were alike - with a variety of settings (incl. boat, island, research station, council house, townhouse, etc.) and time period (incl. past, present and future). Each story felt unique and interesting.
⤷ Writing: Don has a really impactful writing style. With few words, he is able to create vastly different worlds, characters and stories. I really enjoyed these short stories and I'm looking forward to reading his other work.
⤷ Everything else: I really enjoyed the narrator. He was great at conveying emotions like fear and shock, which added a layer of creepiness to the dialogue. He 'fit' the characters he was voicing really well and used different accents and tones to convey the different people. I would recommend the audiobook format to other readers for these reasons.
Statistics: ➵ Date read: 07/06/2025-08/06/2025 (2 days). ➵ Page count: 2 hrs 25 mins, 83 pg. ➵ Type: audiobook. ➵ Volume: standalone. ➵ Special: review copy direct from author.

Welcome to Midnight Harvest, a collection of chilling short stories that will crawl under your skin and linger long after the last page, Each tale is a doorway into a world where the familiar turns sinister, and the light of day offers no sanctuary.
My thoughts: A selection of 8 fast paced horror stories. Each short story is unique and terrifying in its own way. The stories were easy to imagine and I enjoyed how short and snappy they were.
The perfect amount of horror… although I may sleep with one eye open tonight…
I was grateful to receive this pre release copy of Midnight Harvest by Don Campbell. A collection of eight short stories that honestly creeped me out (in a good way). Stories needn’t be gory to be labeled horror and this collection was the perfect reminder of that. The fear that works its way into your psyche.. that’s my favorite! Think Twilight Zone mixed with Tales of the Crypt. Each story was perfectly told, they didn’t feel rushed or incomplete. Midnight Harvest is set to be released on March 5, 2025 and I can’t wait to purchase a physical copy to add to my library.
April 29. 2025 Audio Book
I read Midnight Harvest and loved that spine tingling feeling that well written “horror” stories give you. When I found out there was an audio book I had to give it a listen. Nick Johnson, the narrator, does a great job bringing the stories to life. He has great energy and that accent… swoon! Midnight Harvest will leave you excited, anxious and wanting more.
A wonderful little collection of short stories filled with all manner of horrors. Enjoyed all of them particularly as they all offer up something different from supernatural occurrences, a leprechaun, a harvest festival that offers up more than new crops and a retired serial killer to name but a few.
I'm not sure which was my favourite due to them all being so very different. There were a couple that made me think of the Black Mirror series and the quirks of technology and dangers of taking some advanced too far.
Needing a quick read (under 200 pages) that will keep your interest and give you the creepy crawlies allllll at the same time?? THIS IS THE READ FOR YOU! it’s packed with fast paced short stories that you are going to love!
Midnight Harvest is a gripping showcase of fast-paced horror, blending razor-sharp storytelling with an exceptional command of language. Each tale pulls you in from the first sentence, delivering chilling twists and relentless momentum. Campbell's prose is both elegant and eerie, making this collection a must-read for fans of horror that's as beautifully written as it is unsettling. Highly recommend for anyone who loves stories that keep the pages turning long into the night.
Not since Nick Roberts’ Nocturnal by Nature and It Haunts the Mind has a short story collection swept me off my feet and dragged me into the shadows, until now.
Midnight Harvest by Don Campbell took me by surprise in the best way possible. I picked it up, not knowing what to expect, and now I’m left wondering why I haven’t devoured everything he's ever written before.
This collection of 8 short stories wasn’t just good—it was memorable, chilling, and strangely beautiful in all the ways horror should be.
This collection started off with a banger and kept upping the ante from there.
Starting off with Grey Sleep 5⭐️, this story head fkd me, giving off alien vibes, about a crew based in the Alaskan mountains at a power station where everything starts to go wrong.
My other favourites included: The Silver String 5 ⭐️ An antique typewriter promises a bestselling story to a struggling writer… but at a horrifying cost. 5⭐️
Beneath the surface 5 ⭐️ Haunted by dreams, an old man discovers the truth he’d long buried in the past
The curse of the gadai 5 ⭐️ A group of friends seek a pot of gold inside an abandoned estate. But fortune has a price, and it is ready to collect.
Fragments of Claire 5⭐️ What price would you pay to relive your favourite memories whenever you want? An implant does just that, and more, presenting dire consequences
The others were equally amazing:
The harvest 4.5 ⭐️ if you are chosen. There's no escape
Monkey on my back - a crazy monkey built into a phone app that knows anything and everything about you, created to make life easier 4.5 ⭐️
The wages of salt - 4⭐️ a man set on forgetting his past boards a vessel to sea and joins a crew of seamen only to meet a creature that would be his downfall
Each story felt like a different kind of nightmare, but all stitched together with that same quiet dread that slowly creeps in and refuses to leave. I loved the variety and how no two stories felt the same, yet every single one delivered that unnerving punch, that punch you needed to wake up and pay attention.
The stories were so short I wanted so much more! If this is just the start of a Don Campbell read, then sign me up for more. With his flawless, easy to read writing, it's hard not to get addicted to his stories.
Reading Don's work reminded me of why I fell in love with horror in the first place. It’s that thrill of the unknown, that quiet gasp when the story turns, and that sinking feeling that something is just off. And it was all captured masterfully.
Just so you know what to expect, Don's writing doesn’t have to rely on gore or jump scares—it’s all in the mood, the mystery, and the deep, psychological unease.
Thank you for Midnight Harvest. For the chills, the restlessness, and for making me look twice at empty fields.
Midnight Harvest is a chilling collection of short horror stories, which pack an impressive amount of unease and tension within its 120 pages.
Each story in the collection is unsettling, delving into psychological horror, supernatural terror, and the kind of creeping dread that feels eerily real. The blur of horror and reality added a further depth, and what really stood out for me is Don Campbell’s ability to create something so scary in so few pages. There’s no gap fillers, no character building - just pure relentless fear through each story.
Some of the stories definitely gave me Black Mirror vibes and I thoroughly enjoyed each one. They were all very creative and completely different - but I think if I had to pick a favourite, it would be ‘Beneath The Surface’.
I look forward to reading more by Don Campbell - he will be a horror author to watch if these short stories are anything to go by.
Thank you so much to Don Campbell for sending me this advanced copy of Midnight Harvest to read and review. My opinions are my own. Midnight Harvest is out March 5th!👻
This is a collection of short stories by Don Campbell. At 83 pages this little book of stories is perfect for an in between read. I will summarise the stories In one sentence below.
Grey Sleep Alaskan researchers infected by the fissure.
The Silver String Jacks new purchase inspires creativity but it won’t let him stop.
The Wages of Salt January 20th 1821… captains log. This season faring adventure was haunting and stuck with me. A slow and sliding descent into madness.
The Harvest A newcomer. The Harvest. A ritual. A human trade.
Beneath The Surface An ailing memory. The horror of forgetting. The horror of remembering.
The Curse O’ The Gadai A hunt for gold. What lurks at the end of the rainbow.
Monkey on My Back An old phone app. An argument of sentient technology. Short and sweet I love sentient tropes. This short was great!
Fragments of Claire Memory core the latest in tech helping you save your most cherished memories. Mark doesn’t heed the warnings.
Outstanding collection of creepy , spooky and eerie short stories . All of the stories have such diverse settings. All of them were phenomenal , one in particular called The Wages of Salt was my favorite. It is told in the form of journal entries by a sailor who is out at sea. The entries got progressively darker and completely creeped me out.
This was my first short story collection, I was amazed at how the author was able to write well fleshed out stories that were satisfying even though they were pretty short.
{Audiobook} Don Campbell really has a knack for writing horror. This is the second instance of his work that I indulged in and what a great work it was. This collection of stories is not only frightening but unsettling in that they’re not overly fantastical but instead, rooted in reality, suggesting that the experience in each of these stories could happen to each of us. That, to me, was what was most frightening about these stories. Highly recommend reading his collection of short horror stories!
Midnight Harvest is an absolutely fantastic collection. Every story is packed with tension and just the right amount of creepy to keep you hooked. The way it mixes psychological horror with a touch of the supernatural is brilliant ,each story feels fresh and different, and the twists will definitely leave you wanting more.
Big thanks for the ARC! Midnight Harvest is dropping on March 5th, and trust me, you’ll want to grab it when it does. Highly recommend it for anyone who loves a good scare.
The quickfire rate at which Don Campbell delivers punchy horror is one thing. The diversity of theme, the creativity of setting and the aplomb with which he executes his myriad concepts is quite another.
All stories are posed, explored and reach a climax in a matter of pages. A real asset of the writing.
Every tale is driven by tension and explores a unique element of horror. The sheer imagination of the author is something to savour.
I’ll be the first to say I’m not a horror fan and tend to stay away from them but I was a fan of this book. The short stories were just detailed enough to get the “horror” and “gore” across without leaving me wanting to turn it off. There was some humor pieces throughout and Nick Johnson did a great job narrating. If you’re looking for a short book that’s filled with quick, detailed and slightly creepy stories; this is for you! Check it out!
Don Campbell’s Midnight Harvest delivers sharp, atmospheric horror reminiscent of Stephen King’s Night Shift. While King builds expansive worlds, Campbell distills terror into concise, eerie tales that linger in the mind. Fans of unsettling, character-driven horror will find Midnight Harvest a chilling and memorable read.
You know I love a good short story collection and this one is creepy, sinister, and incredibly creative.
Each story is completely different: from rituals, to infections, to creatures, to the supernatural. Even that strange little one at the end of the rainbow. The Midnight Harvest covers all the bases and delivers chills from start to finish.
Don’s writing bends time and place, pulling you into worlds where horror lingers and tension runs through your veins.
A fantastic collection of short stories that offer the perfect level of horror and would be a great addition for both seasoned horror fans or those new to the genre. All the stories are so different so it keeps it really interesting and in turn makes it hard to pinpoint a favourite, although is pushed I think mine would have to be The Harvest. Once you start you will find it very hard not to finish the whole thing in one sitting as it's impossible to put down! Can't wait for future releases from this exciting new author!
