Dermot Bolger is an Irish novelist, playwright and poet born in Finglas, a suburb of Dublin.
His work is often concerned with the articulation of the experiences of working-class characters who, for various reasons, feel alienated from society. Bolger questions the relevance of traditional nationalist concepts of Irishness, arguing for a more plural and inclusive society.
In the late 1970s Bolger set up Raven Arts Press, which he ran until 1992 when he co-founded New Island Press.
Every single one of the stories in this collection was perfection. Such character development in only a few pages. They didn’t wrap up neatly, which I was grateful for, but still seemed to be satisfying when they ended. Wildly unpredictable, with raw human emotions that I haven’t seen detailed quite so perfectly before. I can’t wait to read the rest of this authors work.
What a beautiful collection of short stories. I read one, thought it was my favourite, read another and changed my mind - this is my favourite, and it went on throughout the book. Such beautifully crafted tales.
One line in "The Rivals" has stayed with me. One of the characters says " Just because we remember things differently doesn't make them untrue". Memories are vague, and our emotions affect how and what we remember. Today, I think my favourite story from this collection is The Rivals. Yesterday it was Supermarket Flowers. Tomorrow it will be something different.
I have to be honest up front: I rarely enjoy short story collections. I either read them all in one go which is not optimal (did that with this one) or I read one story and then forget to pick up the book again. Bolger's short stories are set in Ireland and are well written. I just had trouble moving on from one to the next, being often unable to connect with a new set of characters and a new setting every few pages. This is obviously a me problem. Some of the stories are a bit weird but that is to be expected.
I don’t have the words to describe how much I liked this book. Bolger manages to create an affinity for his characters that allows you to feel their losses and pain. A few of the short stories had me on the verge of tears. My only criticism is that there were no more to read once the last one was done, but truthfully that may also have been a blessing.
11 short stories by a Irish writer you probably NEVER heard of. This is GEM! 30% (3 stories) = masterpieces 70% (…the rest) = excellent Writing style? You can compare Dermot Bolger (1959) with the iconic Irish short story writer, William Trevor (1928-2016) #AbsoluteJoy…to read.
