A Thrill Ride with Twists—But Logic Takes a Backseat!

The Plagiarism Plot wastes no time in setting up its central mystery, pulling readers in from the very first pages. The plot is engaging, and the twists keep you guessing, making it a solid page-turner. However, while the story starts strong, the eventual motive behind the crimes feels somewhat forced—less a natural conclusion and more a hotchpotch solution.

The characters are well-portrayed, with Brad Parker and Karen Richmond’s dynamic adding an interesting layer. However, their decision to stay together without marrying—simply to avoid obligations—didn't sit well with me. Commitment should be about responsibility, not just convenience. That said, one amusing takeaway was the author’s clear love for lobsters and the fact that Brad seems to prefer being greeted by a dog rather than his fiancée—a quirky touch that added to his personality.

This is a fast-paced thriller that moves between various locations, keeping things lively. However, the writing, while engaging, does feel a bit amateur at times. The book also leans into some overused thriller tropes—characters carrying guns when it doesn’t quite make sense, an exaggerated investigative role for Brad, and even an improbable emergency blood transfusion in an ambulance when the hospital is just ten minutes away. The reliance on killing off every suspect to drive the story forward makes it feel formulaic, reminiscent of a B-grade action movie.

Overall, The Plagiarism Plot might not satisfy seasoned mystery readers who are looking for depth and originality. However, for those new to the genre, it could be an entertaining and easy read.

There are plenty of medical thrillers that take place in hospitals or feature doctors and nurses who care for patients, but there aren’t that many that deal with the academic and research side of medicine. That’s what makes Cooper’s Brad Parker and Karen Richmond series such a treat to read. Drawing on his career as a former cancer researcher and scientific administrator, the author takes the reader on a deep dive into the academic world, with razor-sharp details and realistic elements. Plenty there for a science geek to love but always presented in understandable, lay-person terms as well.

In The Plagiarism Plot, Brad and Karen find themselves caught up in a case of professional sabotage of one of Brad’s colleagues. The question is who’s behind it and why?

As always, Cooper’s prose is smooth, and his characters are relatable and likable. I thoroughly enjoyed the scientific elements and felt like I was right there at the Maine Translational Research Institute with Brad as he and Karen work to solve the case. This page-turner was a great way to spend some cold winter nights! Thank you to the author and publisher for an Advance Reading Copy.

I wasn’t as enthralled with this story as my fellow reviewers seem to be. I have read other books in this series and enjoyed them but I cannot say the same for this one. I realize there has to be a conflict in order for there to be a story but this one just seems so obviously contrived that I didn’t buy into it from the beginning. Which made for a rather drawn out read searching for something to hope for. While there are some good moments and some surprise twists I just don’t think they’re enough to make up for the fundamental flaw the utter disbelief in the basic plot line. So sorry but this was a miss for me. Your mileage may vary.

Review of eBook

Monica Kushman is approached by a man and, after some a short conversation she agrees to accompany him to a nearby park. When the man she calls Mr. Black explains what he wants, she finds it isn’t difficult or particularly distressing [and addresses her concern about being granted tenure], she agrees.

After completing her task for Mr. Black, Monica is called to a meeting with the NIH Office of Research Integrity and, as she’d expected, she received a formal warning for sending a review copy of an article to Carolyn Gelman, an action expressly prohibited by the rules of confidentiality. But she also had her tenure . . . and all she’d had to do was lie about not sending the article to anyone else.

Monica knew she should be feeling good, but she had a sense of unease. What else were Mr. Black and his boss planning to do?

=========

Eighth in the author’s Brad Parker/Karen Richmond series, this tale of murderous ambition, ethics, and treachery is set in the halls of academia. Readers will find sufficient backstory for the book to work as a standalone despite being part of a series.

Early on, readers learn that one of the staff members at the Maine Translational Research Institute has been accused of plagiarism. As the investigation begins, murder becomes part of the equation and things rapidly spin out of control.

With strong characters, an intriguing plot filled with unexpected twists and surprising revelations, readers are immediately pulled into the telling of the tale. Short chapters keep the action moving at a brisk pace; readers are sure to find themselves turning the pages as fast as possible.

Woven into the mystery of the plagiarism and the subsequent violence that greets the investigators as they dig for answers are some intriguing insights into the world of academia with its pressure to publish in order to promote. As Brad and Karen seek answers, readers find themselves considering the professional relationships of all the players. What is “acceptable” in order to publish and promote? It’s a tale that is captivating, exciting, and thought-provoking.

Readers who enjoy mysteries will find much to appreciate here as will those who have followed the exploits of Brad and Karen in earlier books in the series.

Highly recommended.

I received an ARC through "Booksirens" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The story begins by introducing Monica who is worried that she will not get tenure. Her only hope is getting acceptance of her article in a medical journey. She initially received a rejection, but she sent in commentary to support her conclusion. She is waiting for word when she meets a gentleman who tells her that if she follows his instructions, she will be saved. She has her article accepted and she gets tenure. Soon she is placed on a review team and Mr. Black, the man that helped her, gave her one more instruction, this lled to a major conspiracy.

As a result of Monica's action, Brad is visited by NIH investigators who advise him that one of his faculty members is a subject of an investigation. This person happens to be a friend of both Karen and himself. Brad sets a team to perform an investigation, and if the charge is true, then he will need to terminate her job. As a result of the review, something pops up and Brad is in the process of forcing her to resign, when he hears news from Karen that changes everything. Brad then begins his own investigation to try and discover who was behind the plot.

Follow Brad as he pursues various clues and discover what other incident happens that implicates the friend in another situation. Do discover who is behind it, what else happens and how everything is resolved, then you need to read this book. It is a winner!

Cooper’s eighth installment in the Brad Parker and Karen Richmond series is a riveting tale of ambition, betrayal, and ethical quandaries set against the backdrop of academic research. Brad Parker is thrust into a scientific misconduct investigation that threatens both careers and personal relationships. Teaming up with his fiancée, FBI Special Agent Karen Richmond, they uncover a deadly conspiracy. As the body count rises, they must identify the mastermind before it’s too late.

Cooper blends technical precision with narrative tension, offering a gripping portrayal of the academic world with—its pressures, ambitions, and moral lapses. The pacing is steady, and the plot is full of twists. The characters’ moral ambiguity adds depth, making it easy for readers to empathize with their complex choices. Brad’s relentless pursuit of truth, Karen’s sharp analysis, and Monica’s ethical decline create a dynamic that propels the narrative forward.

The tension between ambition and integrity lies at the heart of the story, as characters grapple with compromises in their pursuit of success. The novel also explores the fragility of trust and loyalty in professional relationships, highlighting how ambition strains personal connections. Intense, intricate, and morally complex.

I thought this was a well written, engaging story that I will say is making me want to read more of this series. I haven't previously read anything by this author, and I was delighted to see that I could pick this one up as a stand alone novel. There are references to earlier cases, but that doesn't detract from this one.

There are some oddities in this book that I don't completely 'get'. Why do Karen and Brad remain unmarried? Is it just commitment-phobia or something deeper? How does Brad get to jump into an investigator role with Karen when the 'going gets rough'? The last I checked, he was the head of a research institute, not a detective. Does just being a partner to Karen, head of the local police department, confer some kind of credentials on him? I could say something similar about Carolyn. I liked this story - a LOT - but the killings seemed a bit out of proportion with the desired end goal. And that brings up another point - hired hitmen/guards?? Okay, I don't want to give any more hints.

I strongly recommend this book; in spite of the shortcomings I saw, it was an intriguing story with great twists in the plot.

Another excellent book – number eight in the seriesl What started out as a simple question about possible plagiarism, turns into murder. Brad’s longtime and well-loved professor is accused. In going through the process of an investigation, other misdeeds come to light. The suspects are narrowed down, one by one, not because of his investigation, but because they are witnesses and are being killed to prevent the truth from coming out. Karen becomes involved as more information connects the happenings in MA to those in ME. It is now up to them to find out who and why the murders are happening.
There are several reasons why this is one of my favorite series. The writing is superb, including enough details to keep scientists interested, but not overwhelming for newbies. The characters are spot-on and very engaging. The story is told at a great pace and enough to peek one's interest. Everything is in the details, and this author is excellent. I highly suggest this series. Thanks to BookSiren for the ARC of this book.

A chilling reminder that the most dangerous crimes don’t always start with violence, they start with ambition. The Plagiarism Plot takes one of the most subtle forms of professional betrayal and turns it into a deadly unraveling of trust, power, and motive. What begins as an intellectual scandal quickly becomes something far darker, and the transition is both seamless and terrifying.
Brad Parker’s determination to clear his friend’s name pulls him into an academic conspiracy that proves just as lethal as any street-level crime, while Karen Richmond’s role as both investigator and fiancée creates an emotional pressure cooker that keeps every decision painfully real.
The murders arrive not as shock for shock’s sake, but as cold consequences of unchecked ambition. The final confrontation doesn’t just resolve the mystery, it forces a devastating choice between justice and loyalty that lingers long after the last page.
This is smart, tightly plotted, and emotionally charged crime fiction at its finest.

The Plagiarism Plot is a smart, fast-paced thriller that exposes the dark underbelly of academic ambition, where reputation is currency and integrity can be weaponized. Geoffrey M. Cooper expertly turns a professional accusation into a deadly conspiracy, showing how easily careers, and lives, can be destroyed when truth is manipulated.

What truly elevates this installment is the moral tension at its core. As bodies begin to fall, Brad Parker and Karen Richmond are forced into an agonizing conflict between personal loyalty and professional duty. The escalating murders sharpen the stakes, while the academic setting provides a refreshingly original backdrop for a crime thriller. Precise, suspenseful, and ethically charged, The Plagiarism Plot proves that intellectual crimes can be just as lethal as physical ones.

I have read a few of this series already and this is another terrific read. It works well as a standalone though. Brad and Karen get involved when a colleague of Brad's is implicated in a possible plagiarism scandal and things suddenly escalate when the colleague finds herself named as the main suspect in a murder.

I like the mix of academia and investigation in these books. It's an interesting combination and the author combines both very well. The story flows well and was easy to read and the reveal of the mastermind behind everything was a surprise. I enjoyed how the layers of duplicity were gradually peeled away to a quite enjoying finale.

What I love about the Brad and Karen series is the interaction between the two leads. No matter how dark the crime, it’s always a pleasure to rejoin Brad & Karen in solving it, because they are both likable and fun. There’s a real comfort in reading about these familiar characters, and that’s what makes it enjoyable to read, even as the pair are once again plunged into the cutthroat world of academia, where ruthlessly ambitious people are willing to go to any lengths, even murder, to achieve their goals.

I highly recommend this book and this series, even if thrillers aren’t normally your thing.

I thought the author was done with the series; thus, I was happily surprised. I enjoy how Brad (college administrator) and Karen (lieutenant at major crimes unit) they work together, solving crimes, enjoying great food, bird watching, and engaged to be married.

It is fun to see how they solve police or medical cases. At times I was confused due to my lack of knowledge of NIH policies. It was fun to watch the rollercoaster ride and the amount of information they uncover.

Again, there are lots of twists and turns.

Thank you, BookSirens, for the opportunity to review this book.
This was my first medical thriller, and I really enjoyed it.

4.5 stars. This book was part of a series, but I like that it stands alone. The author did a good job of explaining some details and background that could have been from other books in the series.

And my goodness, this book made me feel so ......hungry! They talk so much about the cuisine in the Northern New England area that my stomach started to growl while reading. I was stationed in South Portland, Maine, and it was one of my favorite ones, so it was nice knowing the area they were describing as I was reading.

I will definitely read more from the series once I get my TBR under control.

What a great read all about a professor who is accused of plagiarism and how her friend and colleague Brad does not believe she is guilty. So starts to investigate with the help of his fiancée, FBI Special Agent Karen Richmond to find the truth who set her up.
This is a real page turner that keeps you wanting to read more as the tension rises and you really feel for the characters.
Would recommend to anyone who likes a good mystery.

Academic jealousy, framing the innocent, and murder. Academia can be quite the ugly place when tenure, positions, and money are at stake. Brad isn’t the usual sleuth trying to figure out the mystery. He heads a science research department and is married to Karen, a former FBI agent turned cop. This was interesting and believable motives elements. This story flowed well and held my interest. There were several interesting twists. I received my advanced copy through the Niche Reader.

I've read a couple of stories in this series and I enjoyed this one just as much as the others. The pace of the story is good and the characters, interesting. I was kept wondering the whole time how everything was going to come together and what a tangled web it turned out to be.
A story I would gladly read again.

This is an entertaining medical thriller with lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed the story for the most part but found that it dragged at times. It was an easy read though, and great as a palette cleanser.
I've only read two of the books in this series and found them easy to follow as standalone novels.

Real plot twister, who is the man in black? The plot thickens with suspects dying. Who would go to great length to hire mercenaries for what final outcome. The pieces of the puzzle slowly come together but the main actor is always one step ahead.

After a slightly slow start where I wasn't quite sure if I liked it or not, I really enjoyed this.

Yes, there are a few things which work out to be a little trite, but it was an enjoyable read and I'd certainly pick up the next one in the series
