Terrorist attacks have decimated the CDF fleet in the Orion Spur, and reinforcements are hung up by the new administration’s pacifist politics. Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hanson and the CSV Margaret Thatcher are left in a nightmare
They are on their own.
Amid the power plays, word reaches him of a mass hostage situation. Arthur resorts to any means necessary to discover their location—even under threat of mutiny and court martial. But with few Coalition ships left in the Spur, any rescue mission is doomed to fail.
But he won’t leave innocents to a fate worse than death.
Unwilling to turn aside, Arthur and the Special Forces under his command execute a hastily planned op worthy of their namesake ship. But the clock is ticking. They’ll have to pull out all the stops to free the hostages and halt Armageddon.
I found the plot quite interesting. However, a large portion of this book seems intent on making a stand on current political/societal sides. ultimately, that's fine. The majority of media today has some sort of political messaging attached. my issue isn't against its inclusion. It's in the way it was written. it was far too much at the forefront of the novel, especially in the first half. a much more... subtle method would have suited this a lot better. it was so obvious, in fact, I had to go and check when the book was published, and to no surprise, it was published this year.
there were a handful of simple spelling/grammar mistakes throughout. (mixing up too and two, for example)
the book focuses too much on God/ religion for my tastes, but I'm not going to hold that against the book.
Well, after reading two of the books in this series, I think I’m going to give it up. This is just me and my impression so don’t be doing anything like this if you really enjoy these books. I’m not a religious person, never have subscribed to anyone religion so I don’t like reading about someone else’s religion and it being thrown around in a military-type science fiction story. Again, that’s just me and just know that I’ve been in situations where I’ve prayed to come out alive, but it didn’t help some of those around me who were doing the same thing. Enough said about all that.
Lieutenant Arthur Hanson has taken command of the *CDF Margaret Thatcher* when his Captain was killed in a previous surprise attack by what is now known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Orion Spur (PFLOS). These ships came out of know where and attacked a CDF space station without warning. The *Thatcher* fought hard and was damaged herself, but managed to disable a large PFLOS ship and drive away the rest of the PFLOS fleet or they just left after doing the damage they wanted to do. Now ship’s Captain Hanson has to get his ship back in order to defend against further incursions by this PFLOS.
While he’s doing that and figuring on going to war again for a long period of time, the word of the attack has gotten back to Lawrence City on Canaan, the capital city of the Terran Coalition. General David Cohen is prepared to receive his marching orders to throw the entire might of the CDF at this new enemy. But, he’s stunned when President Rachel Robbins says she does not want another war, therefore the Terran Coalition will do nothing about this incident. In fact, she direct General Cohen to withdraw all CDF forces within the Orion Spur which means she’s willing to give it up entirely. That means all the colonies and Terran Coalitions citizens are now on their own against the PFLOS! Of course, General Cohen can’t believe what he’s hearing, but he’s summarily dismissed from further political discussions and told to do as ordered!
Meanwhile, the PFLOS has been busy attacking outer Terran Coalition assets. They are raiding defenseless freighters and even cruise liners, taking capture any and all citizens. They are ruthless in their treatment of Terran citizens even going so far as to public execute a kindergarten teacher on public TV. They eventually announce that they have well over 2,000 captives and demand that the Terran Coalition ceded the Orion Spur to them or they will eliminate all these civilians.
General Cohen has done as ordered but Captain Hanson believes that he must do something. He directs that the orders from CDF HQ were garbled while he also tells his people that they must find the location of where these Terran Coalition citizens are being held. If necessary, he’ll take the *CDF Margaret Thatcher* in alone to free their citizens.
Even with the news of the capture of a large number of her citizens, President Robbins still insist that they will do nothing but follow whatever the PFLOS is telling them to do. She apparently doesn’t care much about here citizens but is more concerned in maintaining her political power.
So how is General Cohen and Captain Arthur Hanson going to handle all this? Well, that’s what the book is about. There are a number of space battles involving quite a few ships, mostly very few on the CDF side, but Hanson has found he does have some support from a very secretive source. Can they pull off a rescue? Read and find out.
As I mentioned initially, this book has a lot of religious connotations from all sorts of religion. They even have an alien Saurian (lizard-like people) as part of their coalition. I don’t care for the way these books are written, but that’s just mean. You might find them very enjoyable. So, in that light, the next book in the series is, “Counterstrike”, now available on Amazon.
==[Note: As of 12/03/2023, this will not be published on Amazon since I have been banned from posting reviews for some unknown reason. Once the ban is lifted, assuming it does get lifted, I’ll go back and post this to Amazon.]==
So. Good. Nail-biter of a military science fiction novel about a raid on a prison and the ensuing space battle. This guy writes well. I couldn't put it down. Things I learned: OODA (observe, orient, decide, act) and 'slow is smooth and smooth is fast.' The only thing I find a tad jarring is the ship distances, like when these enemies are slugging it out right on top of each other (relatively speaking). I think Jack Campbell does a great job with making the reader understand the distances involved in space combat, and how relativity impacts battles. But that's a quibble: I freaking loved this, and I can't wait to read the rest!
The writing is subpar. The same premises, phrases and dialog I see in hundreds of other books. "Quantity has a quality all it's own" being one of the most frequently repeated. The author has an obsession with certain words and phrases. For example, the word 'alloy' is used 26 times. Instead of metal, metallic, or other similar words, alloy is used. Weird.
The worst part is the religious claptrap, mainly Jewish, but also Christian, Moslem, Saurian (?!) and others. The book reaks of religion.
This author has a ton of talent. The story is good and the characters fleshed out (even when I didn’t like them). My only issue (and to me it’s a big one) is the author drops sizable portions of religion (of all types) in every other chapter. I’m not mad but I didn’t pick this book up as a religious text. This book had many more religious drops than the first. Not my cup of tea. Will not be finishing
Intervention is Book 2 in The Iron Fleet by Daniel Gibbs. In my opinion, this author writes fantastic Military SiFi. The conflict and fight scenes are outstanding and realistic. Terrorist and hostages are met with opposition from the CVS Margaret Thatcher and Lt Colonel Arthur Hanson. This series is not to be missed. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
While trying to fight off an overwhelming group of well armed ships manned by extremists bent on killing everyone who doesn't agree with their views. The defenders find themselves hamstringed by a government bent on keeping tons treaty that has already been broken by the other side. Good Read.
Absolutely brilliant, a real page turner. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. The stupidity of politician's is well known, but we still keep voting for them. I look forward to the next one.
This book fit the series well there was plenty of action both in space and on planets kind of . The book was a good read and had a great storyline to it , it was also a fun read at times.
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
