When Arsene Wenger said he wanted his team to go through a season undefeated, he was roundly mocked, yet just over 12 months later the Arsenal manager guided his team to footballing immortality.
The Gunners’ 2003-2004 campaign was extraordinary, and not just because of their remarkable league achievement.
From the highs and lows of Europe, to disciplinary charges, pitched battles, the frantic scramble to finance a new stadium, a club record transfer in January, and winning the title at the ground of the old enemy, this special collector’s edition book looks back on everything that happened during an unforgettable campaign.
Match reports, behind the scenes stories, exclusive interviews and illustrations, stats, tactics, pictures; all the things you know, and lots of stuff you’ve forgotten: Together tells the story of Arsenal’s ‘unbeaten’ season.
3.5 would have been an apt rating for this book which charts the story of Arsenal's landmark 2003-04 season where Arsenal went the entire season unbeaten. The book sets up the season with a review of pre-season and gives a match-by-match account. It isn't a great sportsbook focussing on philosophy, tactics, history but I suppose it is hard to do that when it is only about one season. It is a must-read for all Arsenal fans particularly those who weren't following the team then.
A crucial addition to any Arsenal fan's reading collection, especially those who were too young in 2004 to be able to experience the Invincibles up close. Since I have only been a fan since 2011, it was great to read through the season chronologically, feeling the ups and downs like I was there at the time.
I liked every single part of it and my favourite part was when arsenal played against Manchester United at old Trafford and van nisteltroy hits the crossbar
Since I wasn't following Arsenal during the Invincibles season, I've only read about it, and bits and pieces at that.
This book takes the reader the closest to travelling back in time and watching every game that is possible without the discovery of time travel (which doesn't happen until 2029 or so). Despite knowing on an intellectual level how the season turned out, I found myself sweating along with the team as they narrowly avoided defeat in some games, ground out some 1-0 wins, and occasionally stuck four or more goals past the opposition.
As an Arsenal fan I have to say this is a must read book for any gooner who likes the reading. It's pretty interesting how you can travel through the entire 2003-2004 season and feel like you were there in the exactly moment when the Arsenal was winning the unbeaten Premier League. I also have to say that they wrote about the Champions League season (in fact they even describe the FA Cup and the league cup) and it's interesting because you can see the Arsenal´s european debacle is not a new thing.
Read as an Arsenal fan.....Match reports tended to get a bit repatative and hence boring....there is only so much one can do with a football. But some parts did sparkle....like Henry's goal at Liverpool. What I found more interesting was the additional tidbits and anecdotes.Especially couple of ones Martin Keown or Jens Lehmann was involved in.All in all a breezy read for an Arsenal Fan.
Amy Lawrence's book on the Invincibles is still the defining history of that team, but this is a great glossy, with photos and commentary and "fan perspective." Well worth a read.
