Cat & Mouse: An Urban Fantasy Detective Novella

Rate this book
Azure City. A place where humans and fae begrudgingly live together. Humans have systematically taken everything from the fae—freedom, resources, land.

Except now a thief prowls the city, hidden in the shadows, taking back the fae heritage gemstone by gemstone.

The Mouse.

The bane of Detective Gabriel Catts’ existence. He’s got to find the Mouse before he—she?—sends the city into a panic. As he’s on the trail, he finds that there might be more to life than the shiny badge around his neck.

His only lead Alette—dancer, charmer, thief extraordinaire—is more of a distraction with her sultry eyes than he can handle. Especially when she relieves him of that badge.

Duty calls, and Catts will answer, but apprehending the Mouse might be more than he can bear.

Is Alette the distraction Detective Catts needs from that shiny, shiny badge of his? He’ll find out once she relieves him of it.

This was a fun short read. I like the blend of noir and magic, a clever spin on the detective and enemies-to-lovers mashup. I appreciate that this is an adult read and felt the steamy scene suited the story being told. I thought the length was helpful in building suspense but wanted to see more of the world and uses of magic. That’s probably the only reason this isn’t a 5-star review. I could read more of this or other stories from this world at any time.

Highly recommended to adult fans of magical genre mashups and steamy detective tales.

This was a fun short little novella! Urban fantasy classic detective story of the cat and the mouse. The cat is a half fae detective working on series of burglaries where the only things stolen are fae gems. The mouse is fae’s version of Robbin Hood stealing back the fae gems from the humans who took them. Bc it’s a novella it was very insta love which isn’t my favorite trope but I understand the reasoning. It was overall a fun read!

I read this in the Foes to Flames Anthology and this is my mini review copy-pasted from that review. That being the case, it's possible that this version might differ from that initial version and if so, some things might be more ironed out.

Cat and Mouse by Jana Sun: 2/5 ⭐⭐
This one didn't work for me. The characters felt fairly one note and fell into an insta love and I didn't buy into their romance at all. The writing was also underdeveloped, there were some typos and oddly structured sentences that were very distracting and prevented me from getting deeper into the story. I think the premise is really intriguing and perhaps with more time to flesh out and develop, and with an editor's touch, it could be something really fun!

Oh. My. Gosh. I’ve known for a while now how well Jana can write a story but this one had me gripped. I couldn’t put it down! I know this is a novella but I need more stories about Gabriel and Alette! If you like an old fashioned jewelry thief who done it with Robin Hood vibes and an enemies to lovers romance read this right now. Honestly. Right this second.
