Donovan Nash #4

Deadly Echoes

Rate this book
Donovan Nash is a man under siege, and this time it's personal.  Eco-Watch, the premier scientific research organization he founded, is being blamed for a series of violent eco-atrocities that ignite protests around the world.  Behind the attacks is Garrick Pearce, a man from Donovan's past, who is bent on a ruthless vendetta.  Garrick has promised that after he annihilates Eco-Watch, he'll murder everyone close to Nash.  Recoiling from the damage, Donovan enlists the help of Erica, a woman who claims she has information Donovan needs, but her knowledge makes her a marked woman.  Running from trained killers, the FBI and even his own organization, Donovan races from southern California to British Columbia, then finally to Alaska where he joins Eco-Watch personnel and desperately tries to stop what promises to be the worst eco-atrocity in history.  With his world in tatters and everything he built seemingly destroyed, Donovan is forced to make one last desperate gamble to stop Garrick and silence the man forever-a roll of the dice that may very well cost Nash his life.

As a young man, Philip Donlay's life was shaped by two distinct events. At the age of seventeen, he earned his pilot's license, and at eighteen was published in a national aviation magazine. The combination of these two passions: flying and writing, has led to successful careers as both a professional pilot and novelist.

He's been a flight instructor, flown a private jet for a Saudi prince, and for twenty-eight years flew a corporate jet for a Fortune 500 company. Licensed to fly six different jets and having logged nearly 14,000 hours, his travels have taken him to over forty countries on five continents. No longer flying, Donlay now divides his time between Minneapolis and the San Juan Islands. He's the author of four novels, Category Five, Code Black, Zero Separation, and his latest: Deadly Echoes.

This has been a highly entertaining series up until now so I was expecting more of the same with Deadly Echoes. Unfortunately this book strips away everything great about the Donovan Nash books. Here Nash, someone who has always had a high level of integrity and loyalty, turns into a whining, cheating, moron. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I take marriage vows seriously. Nash and his wife Lauren are supposedly going through difficulties and living apart, so the author comes up with the great idea of pairing Nash up with Erica, a woman on the run from the bad guys, having the two of them engage in an affair and then brings them together with Lauren so all three can stop the villains. It reads about as awkward as it sounds and makes it impossible for me to care anything about Erica or Nash. It also makes Donovan's epilogue explanation on how "everything he'd done was an act of preservation - to save his wife, his family" come across as comical.

There's plenty of other problems here including not even having the main bad guy put in a physical appearance until the last twenty pages or so of the novel, and an overly complicated plot involving the CIA and Mossad. Much as I like these books this is one to forget. I'll try the next one but I'm not overly excited about it after reading this mess.

Exciting action adventure with Donovan Nash and his wife Dr. Audrey McKenna. He has a secret billionaire past and dead fiancee. In this book, his dead fiancee's psychotic lover is trying to kill Donovan and run his Eco company. There is lots of action and many murders. I have read two other Donlay thrillers in the series for 99 cents and I highly recommend them. The others in the series are priced too high for my budget since I read a book a day. All of his books are very readable. James Cook

This is the second Donavan Nash book I read. I really want to like them. The stories are interesting and engaging. However, whenever the author deals with situations or plot devices based on science or technology, he just makes stuff up. If you can deal with the eye-rolling inaccuracies of scientific or technological subjects, you’ll enjoy this book. If you need something more believable and realistic, I’d recommend passing on this series.

I'm going to have to stop reading this series after the 3rd 3 AM finish. Very well done, although Donovan Nash has to be the unluckiest man alive given the crises that befall him. I didn't care for Donovan's excuses for his sexual adventures with Erica - it doesn't ring true that he accepts full responsibility for his marital difficulties with Lauren but still finds solace with another woman, but the book was still suspenseful and fast-moving.

The Donovan Nash Series’s jus gets better

From book 1 though 4, the series and script has come along in leaps and bounds. Whilst as previously stated I found book 1 very average the 3rd and 4th were entertaining, gripping and each an improvement on the previous.

I look forward to book 5

The excitement is terrific and goes from 1 continent to another. The pace is so fast that you almost get whiplash and the plot of ecoterrorists vs the eco goodguys is really different. I like the back story and the fact that the good guy doesn't always make the best decisions, but keeps trying and going forward anyway.

Another WOW Book!

Another WOW book! It is an exciting and, yes, gut wrenching. I am amazed at the different unusual details to Philip's stories. I love details about flying airplanes. I also like the detail personalities.

Another Philip Donlay masterpiece!

Mr. Donlay continues to deliver captivating thrillers that are well-suited for a broad audience! Once again, his theme is unique, educational and obviously well researched.

This series surprisingly became better and better. Now it's time for the main character being hunted. The story of the past and the present time intertwined in the Donovan's life. A thriller to the end.

DEADLY ECHOES
By Philip Donlay
I picked this book up thinking it sounded interesting. Boy, was I wrong. It was more than interesting. Fantastic comes to mind. So does gripping. Once I started, I couldn’t put this book down.
Eco-Watch is a scientific research organization founded by Donovan Nash. It took Donovan a long time and a lot of sweat to build this international institution up to being one of the most solicited in the world. Its technology has been applied to protect the environment in ways other companies could not. But now it’s being attacked by Garrick Pearce, the one person who knows Donovan’s true past. Garrick wants to not only tell the world Donovan’s real identity but to annihilate Eco-Watch and kill anyone close to Donovan. Garrick has a personal vendetta—he believes Donovan is responsible for Meredith Barnes’s death, a woman who fought for the environment and whom Garrick was in love with.
From Alaska to British Columbia to Los Angeles and many other places in between, Donovan follows leads. Garrick taunts him with past pictures of Meredith. He is forced to commit his own crimes as he tries to protect his wife Lauren, daughter Abigail, and a new woman he meets—Erica. Donovan’s marriage was already on the rocks and when Erica makes an appearance in Donovan’s life, it makes Donovan’s personal life go from upsetting to terrifying. Erica holds information that can take down Garrick and his cohorts, but Donovan must keep everyone from getting killed, himself included, in order to use that knowledge.
Not only is Donovan fighting to save Eco-Watch but he’s also racing to save his family, friends, his marriage, and his personal past from being made public. If the world finds out who he really is, not only will Eco-Watch be ruined but his world as he knows it will implode. It’s a race to the finish. From beginning to end, this is one thrill ride that I highly recommend.

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads giveaway, but I was not required to provide a review.

Positives:
1) I have not read any of the other books in the series, and this book acted more like a stand alone book. I would have no issues with having a person read this book even if they had not read any of the others.
2) The characters were described well, and made you feel like you knew them.
3) This book has lots of action, and draws the reader into the story pretty quickly.
4) It just made me want to keep reading, I would find myself saying that I needed to read one more chapter, before setting the book down, and it usually would being more like 4.
5) It is an excellent thriller.

Negatives:
1) I am not holding this against the book, but to let people know. This is not a mystery like a few reviews I read stated. It is a thriller/action.
2) There were a couple sex scenes, but they were pretty mild, so it would not limit the audience that much. They were mostly just references.

Conclusion:
For anyone who enjoys a good thriller or high action book, I would definitely recommend it. I enjoyed it to the extent that I will probably start reading other books by this author. It will draw you in, so make sure you have the time to read, because you may not want to put it down.

This book is all action from the get go and does not let up until the last page. The pace is relentless.

The characters are well defined both initially and throughout the story with flashbacks. You get to feel for the characters and hope that Nash will be successful in his mission. What I did find distracting was the author’s constant references to very recent events (possibly what happened in the previous book) namely a recent injury and marital issues. Yet the plot twists make this for an edge-of-the seat read.

This book has everything that murder, mystery thriller readers love. Yet we know from early on who the protagonist is and what they are doing so it is more a case of cat and mouse than a true mystery thriller. Although this could be read as a standalone book, this reader feels that more would be gained from reading the entire series in order. The book is very well written with brilliant prose and this reader wished that they had started at the beginning of the series, so I will have to go back and start again.

Full Disclosure: ARC received from Netgalley for an honest review.

If you love a great fast-paced mystery, you'll love this newest installment from Philip Donlay. I had the pleasure to review this via Netgalley. In Deadly Echoes, Donovan Nash runs Eco-Watch, an environmental friendly company on saving the planet. But Nash also had a hidden past under an assumed name and lost a love a couple of years ago. But someone from the past doesn't want him it hidden and out of the open. He's out for blood and revenge, taunting him along the way. With an eco-twist, everything Nash loves and cared for are under attack and under siege by someone who's out for his blood--friends, family members and even Eco-Watch's vehicles. For Lauren, his estranged wife and mother of his little girl, a DIA analyst headquartered in Europe, she wants to keep Nash from a safe distance, until she's ready to see him again. From Hawaii to Alaska, and even parts of Europe and Canada, Nash, his wife Lauren, and his team defends them from all angles to prevent an eco-disaster from happening. Lots of action, drama, and an adrenalin rush from start to finish. Hold onto your hats!

Great book. Very well written with wonderful prose. This is a series but this can be read as a stand alone story. Donovan's secrets will all be exposed unless he can find the man who is ruining the reputation of his company(Eco-Watch) as well as himself. A man out of Donovan's past has come back to haunt him, wanting him to pay for the death of his former love's demise. He must rush to horrible scenes of death to find clues as to where the madman will strike next. He is contacted by the only person to escape one of Garrick's terrible terrorist attack's. She is the key to unlocking who is after them. To Donovan's surprise it's not only the madman he must evade but also the FBI and possibly another terrorist group. I just wish I'd started at the beginning of the series. Now, I'll have to start at the beginning.

I am so sorry to have reached the current end of this series. Every book has been excellent. The premise of this book is the surface of an old adversary hell bent on destroying Donovan Nash and everything he has built in the past 20 years. We have some truly memorable supporting cast members all contributing to the conclusion of the story. As always technology saves the day But truly awe inspiring. Hope mr donlay is furiously writing the next book in the series. Thank you mr d

Erica was not necessary for the success of this book. Splitting up a really good marriage was not necessary for the success of this book. Other authors have successfully introduced married couples into their thrillers that have been able to maintain their relationship throughout the series. This series started out and was set up, to do the same. The other books have been good, so hopefully this is just a blip on the radar screen and this is resolved in Aftershock.

Deadly Echoes by Philip Donlay

Outstanding thriller by a seasoned storyteller. Loved the characters, the fast moving plot, the weaving of the sense of place into the story at every turn. A first-rate thriller is every respect. Highly recommended.

Good thriller

I like the drama of the Nash series but this one packs a ton of Donovan's history into the story and slows the pace to a near crawl, at times. The overall story is interesting and keeps you engaged. I understand his wife's reluctance when his past keeps coming up but I was a bit emotionally drained with their relationship by the end of this one.

This is a fast-paced thriller packed with lots of technical details. The story is softened with a believable love story. Best of all there are many smart and brave women characters who are critical to the plot. This is not just a man's story.
