A Realm of Lies and Power

Rate this book
"I only killed in one of two ways. By the high lord's command, or to protect her."

Renwick

Renwick, the high lord's most trusted assassin, has been captivated by Davina for years. He has always kept his feelings buried beneath layers of duty, but a growing threat surrounding her makes it hard for him to keep his distance.

Balancing duty and desire, he is torn between his loyalty to Lord Arwen and his need to protect Davina. She is the key to secrets that could unravel the realm, and Renwick wants her--magic, darkness, and all.

Davina

Sixteen years ago, Davina's parents died under mysterious circumstances, leaving her with a legacy of dark secrets and forbidden magic. Ever since, she has hidden her abilities while serving at Asterin's Temple, determined to live a quiet life alongside her best friend.

When a murder eerily similar to the one from her childhood surfaces, Davina's world shatters and her magic threatens to escape.

Their Story

Thrust into a realm of lies and power, Davina and Renwick's paths collide. Pursuing powerful enemies, and unraveling the truth behind the mysterious murders, they must decide if love can triumph over duty--and if hope can illuminate shadows of the past.

A Realm of Lies and Power by Larissa Antonioni // Thank you so much for gifting me your book Larissa

Davina’s parents were killed by a mystical magic when she was ten. Ever since she’s lived separated from her sister in a temple and harboring a dangerous magic she doesn’t understand. Renwick has watched and protected Davina for years without her knowing. Something has always drawn him towards her. When someone starts murdering people the same way Davina’s parents were killed the two of them is paired up by the High Lord to catch the killer. Renwick is the Lord’s silent assassin, but when it stands between him and Davina, where will his loyalty lay?

WOW! First of, let’s take a moment to admire the beautiful cover. Ren is looking hot🤭 Secondly, I can’t believe this is Larissa’s debut?! I was immediately grabbed my the luscious writing, amazing! The descriptions were so rich and vivid I had no problem imagining the world though our protagonists eyes. As for the worldbuilding it was easy, but good. At the ending we got more information I thought was a little confusing, but I’m really looking forward to exploring it more in the sequel.

The romance was a delicious slow burn. We already knew Ren was head over heels for Davina but it took some time for her to warm up to him. Even then they both held back because of secrets we slowly unraveled through the novel. What I really loved was how gentle Ren was with Davina. He never pushed her and was always understanding. He cared for her like one one else and loved her unabashedly. And please, a guy who bathes her and brushes her hair when she can’t do it herself? SWOON alert! Ren was Draki and learned Davina Drakai so she could communicate with him and his sassy wyvern, Draxus, without anyone else understanding. It was so sweet how their trust in each other grew as they helped each other through their problems.

I found both of them lovable and strong. Davina’s journey hit hard. She had to deal with grief, self-hatred, insecurity and more. She hurt herself and had to learn to trust herself and her magic. Ren was amazing with helping her on this journey.

As for the murder mystery, I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t hard to guess who the murderer was, but I still wanted to know why and how. I wasn’t all that surprised by the plot twist at the end either, but liked it nonetheless. My heart broke for Davina. I liked the ending, but at the same time I felt it was a bit rushed. I thought things got a bit convenient sometimes. But when everything unraveled and all the secrets were revealed I wanted more, more, more. I really enjoyed it and after the way it ended I just had to DM Larissa to ask about a sequel. Rest assured, it’s coming 😅

An impressing and enjoyable debut! I’m excited to continue to series!

I'm a little biased, since I wrote the book, but I love these characters. I adore the world that surrounds them. This book holds so many pieces of my heart. I am ecstatic and nervous to put it into the world. I know, however, that Davina and Renwick deserve to have their story told.

Happy reading, everyone. 💕

Doing my best to leave an honest review without spoilers! A Realm of Lies and Power was an immersive, captivating read from start to finish. The author's attention to detail and descriptive prose brought the scenes to life in my mind as they unfolded—especially the world-building. The setting, with its politics, religion, and lore, I could practically feel myself sipping tea in the Arcane Realm Archives. I wanted to be there! As a first-time author, the writing is impressive. I think she did a stunning job. While I found the use of ‘male/female’ versus ‘man/woman’ a bit odd at times, it wasn’t enough to detract from my overall enjoyment. Renwick’s and Davina’s backstories were gut-wrenching and heartbreaking, in the best way. And Draxus, that cheeky wyvern, adds a touch of humor and charm—the perfect companion character. And then there’s Renwick and Davina together… Oh my goodness. The chemistry between them... And that ending?! I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. I’m already eagerly (and impatiently) awaiting the next installment. Highly recommend! 10/10 Also decided to include probably two of my favorite Renwick and Davina quotes below:

“I think, in another life, we have already met, because I knew your soul the moment that I laid eyes on you.” Renwick

“I didn’t fear the darkness. I was the darkness.” Davina

The premise of this story sounded really good to me but this book suffers from the following:

- an FMC who doubts herself at every imaginable turn even though she has a rare and powerful strong magic and weak character development
- constant lip biting (it's a miracle she still has lips)
- an assassin who doesn't actually have a job because he's with the FMC 24/7
- an MMC who constantly tells the MMC she's beautiful but fails to tell her their history and draws it out til she has to learn it from someone else
- too many side characters with too many varied storylines
- time jumps right before an important conversation reveal
- chaotic plot with a lot of shock moments for no apparent reason
- a very long drawn out, lukewarm romance

I'm clearly in the minority compared to other reviews. I kept reading hoping it would get better but it didn't work out for me and I won't be continuing this series.

A Realm of Lies and Power is a gripping tale that explores the fragile nature of trust—both in others and in oneself—and the devastating impact of betrayal.

Though it’s a hot as hell love story with fun magic, an opinionated wyvern, and full of great banter, at its heart, this story examines what it means to trust when every choice feels like a risk and how betrayal reshapes the very foundation of who we are.

With vivid and fun world-building, unforgettable characters, and a love that dares to burn amidst lies, A Realm of Lies and Power delivers an unforgettable journey through heartbreak, redemption, and the search for truth in a world built on deception.

I received this advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

I REALLY enjoyed this book. It was so well written and so detailed. Great world-building - it was so easy to get lost in this story. The characters were unique and there were times you loved them but despised them too. The secrecy, dark magic, murder and mystery all come together to make a wickedly suspenseful story wrapped in love, loyalty, desire and complex relationships. It was a good pace, a touch spicy and even though the vibes were dark there was light mixed throughout. I highly recommend A Realm of Lies and Power to fantasy lovers who love these tropes and want to be enveloped from the very first page.

Thank you so much to Larissa for gifting me a copy of her debut novel to read in exchange for an honest review!

I really enjoyed this one- and to think that this is a debut?!?! The world building was phenomenal and the descriptions were so vivid that I could picture myself in the story. The two main characters were perfect. While their backstories were heartbreaking, I loved that we got this information to truly understand them and understand their motivations. Also, Draxus (the wyvern), was the best side character. I loved his sarcastic sense of humor.

The only thing holding me back from giving this a five stars is that I found it to be predictable at times. I saw most of the twists coming based on little comments from the characters or their actions. The ending did surprise me though- I was floored about one of the betrayals that occurred! I am so excited to read book 2 after the ending. If you want a new fantasy book to pick up, I would definitely recommend Larissa's book!

A great new twist on a fantasy world!
I really liked the honesty of Davina's character and the realistic battle she faces internally. The book has a nearly seamless shift between 2 POVs all throughout I've not seen done before. I could easily understand each perspective as the mystery unfolded.

Can't wait to read the next!

Thank you to the author for providing me with a review copy of A Realm of Lies and Power.
This is a fantastic debut, it's immersive and pulls you into Davina and Renwick's world.
Renwick is the definition of "Touch her and die" as he has been protecting her for years without her knowledge.
I love Draxus and his snarkiness - who wouldn't love a snarky wyvern?
Davina is a character who is more than meets the eye. I love her interactions with Renwick and Draxus.
All three of these characters have awful backstories that make you feel for them.
That ending though, I definitely need to continue with this series.

My, how happy I am to have been selected as an ARC reader for this! Although in all fairness I probably would've nagged Larissa if I hadn't because who could wait until February to read this gem??? <3

I was so excited to finally meet Renwick and Davina. I love them as characters, especially Davina, she's such a strong, amazing, and admirable FMC. Their romance is so sweet and I love how their story unfolded and honestly can't wait for more!

Larissa's prose is absolutely beautiful, it's so flowy and enjoyable and it did not throw me out of the story, not once.

Great job Larissa, I'm SO proud of you and this amazing world that you've created!

Well, well, well. This book took me by surprise. It reminds me of the fantasy books I read 10 - 15 years ago. There is a well thought out magical system and lots of different magical races and creatures mixed in a well thought out fantasy realm. The seamless shift between the different POV:s made it a smooth read for someone like me who usually don’t like books with more than one POV. It was a fun read mixed in with important topics such as self-hatred, grief, love, betrayal and friendships. But also how you can learn to trust again after being lied to.

When Davina’s parents are killed she and her sister are separated from each other and while Davina is sent to a temple, her sister is sent to an orphanage. As the years pass Davina is left to try and navigate life and all that ensues as well as the dangerous magic within herself that grows stronger and stronger.

Renwick has admired and protected Davina from a distance over the years but as the high lords assassin he can never let it get any further than that. Bound to his master he and his companion Draxus must navigate his servitude to the high lord. as well as the growing pull towards Davina.

As new murders occur throughout the city, same as Davinas parents’ murders, her and Renwick are paired together to find the killer.

I liked the way the relationship between Renwick and Davina changes throughout the story. Something about their relationship and the way it slowly builds up is *chefs kiss*! And honestly, who doesn’t love and opinionated, badass and sassy wyvern?

I am really looking forward to reading the follow up to A realm of Lies and Power!

Fantasy with political intrigue, magic, hidden identitys, betrayal, longing, messy emotions and self discovery.
I love the writing style you are immediately immersed in a fast Fantasy world, there is a map ( I love a map) and a playlists that further benefis the experience. All the characters feel like friends and that makes the story so much more.
I would give my life for Draxus the wyvern. I hope we will get to see more of him soon.

Larissa’s first book is amazing! You don’t expect this sort of story flow when a budding author asks you to beta read their work.

I’m very grateful that I got to read this as a beta reader. I got to be one of the first people to read this through and can honestly say that this novel is like if Fourth Wing and From Blood & Ash had a baby.

The banter between characters is great; I loved the dialogue! The character development was great too. I loved seeing the characters become more confident.

Also: dragons 🐉

Can’t wait to see what else Larissa comes up with!!

🗡️Enemies to lovers
🗡️Forced proximity
🗡️Fates mates
🗡️Betrayal (loads...)
🗡️Slow burn

I enjoyed this book, it has a great world-building (different realms), lots of different types of magical creatures, magic, fated mates. This book has everything to be amazing. Although, I think there is one thing which about the story contains too much - betrayal. The last around 25% of the book is just about this, poor Davina (and we as a readers) didn't have enough time to recover from one, because the next one just occurs. At the end, I just rolled my eyes...

Davina is our FMC, she is young, grown up separated from her sister, as she was sent to an orphanage, while Davina was grown up under Priestess's under protective wings, as their parents was murdered. She had a rough life, hasn't trust anyone (except two persons, ). She is in the focus (or target even) of a murder mystery, everyone who is close to her were murdered, or get hurt badly. I would push everyone away from me in the same situation. I can't blame her.

Renwick is our MMC, the high lord's assassin, the shadow walker (no,he hasn't got shadow magic, skill or anything similar - FINALLY). He is forced to work in the service of the lord. He is someone who is enjoying his work (if the target deserves it), but still he has a second (or maybe third) life in the background, not even he is obsessed with Davina for years and does anything that he can do to keep her safe, but he saves other innocent lifes as well. And no one knows about it. (At this point, Azriel could learn from him tbh).

The romance is something I have a little bit of problem. I see that they have a little chemistry, but the focus is on the 'little'. I think the betrayals, the lack of self-confidence, the constant doubt in herself and her magic took away that focus from a lot of other things, for example the chemistry between them. As it is a slow burn romantasy, you won't see any spice in the first 80% of the book, there are a little banter before that, but not much. Which is not an issue, as it is gives us, what is says - slow burn.

The story ends with a HUGE cliffhanger in multiple threads. I don't know what will happen with Davina what happened with Renwick, or Emyr and the others (friends of Davina).

4.5 stars

As someone who is a tad picky when it comes to romance and fantasy, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book much more than I was expecting to. While this may not have had the amount of action that I've read in books like the Empyrean series, I feel like the plot is interesting and complex enough that it wasn't necessary. This was the first novel in the Arcane Realm Chronicles, and I think Larissa did a fantastic job introducing us to the many characters, building the world, and explaining the relatively unique magic system. The pacing for all of these components was well done and also completed in under 400 pages (when I feel like most novels of this nature feel more drawn out because they have 200 plus extra pages). It also feels like we will be seeing a lot more action in the upcoming sequel, now that the tone and plot have been properly established.

Another aspect that I thought was extremely well-done was the romance. At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to believe the bond between Davina and Renwick, but as the story progressed the tension definitely kept building. It was an EXREMELY slow burn (all the spice was literally within the last 100 pages, and it was DEFINITELY worth the wait). The one thing about some of these fantasy/romance novels that I can't stand is the lack of sexual tension leading up to the spice. For example (and I'm in the minority here), I cannot stand Violet and Xaden from the Empyrean series. While I like them both individually, their romance just doesn't make any sense to me. However, Davina and Renwick do make sense, and I feel like their bond was properly explored (at least on a level that I personally felt comfortable with).

The last thing I really enjoyed was how instead of having the MMC being the dark, brooding shadow-daddy, it was Davina who fulfilled that role. Renwick was moody in his own way, but not in the way that Davina was. While I haven't read too many of the recent fantasy/romance novels, they all have started blending together with this popular "shadow-daddy" trope, and I really loved that it was NOT the MMC this time. It made this story stand out a bit more from the others I've read.

If anything from this review sounds appealing to you as a fantasy/romance reader, definitely give this book a shot! It does end on a cliffhanger, but the sequel is scheduled for release in early 2026, so the wait for the next installment won't be long. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did!

I was completely drawn into the story of Renwick and Davina—their history, chemistry, and emotional depth made every moment between them feel charged with meaning. The way their overlapping past bleeds into the present adds so much weight to their choices and interactions. I loved watching their relationship evolve, especially as truths come to light and emotions tangle with duty and desire. The dual perspective was seamless and gave a great view into both characters—making it easy to empathize with their inner struggles and root for their growth. And let me tell you, the way the story weaves darkness, love, and the pull of good intentions was just chef’s kiss.

The magic system is another standout—the way it’s intricately tied into the world and character dynamics adds such rich layers of tension and nuance. I was especially intrigued by the layered relationships between Draxus and both Renwick and Davina—those interactions were so entertaining, and Renwick’s reactions to Draxus' behavior added some much-needed levity to the heavier moments. Watching Davina face her past and try to make peace with who she is felt emotional and empowering, while Renwick’s inner tug-of-war between his responsibilities and his heart was beautifully done. And the twists? I didn’t see them coming and loved every second of it. This book had me hooked from beginning to end, and I absolutely can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

When I say I am ready for Book 2, I’m in need of it yesterday. With the cliffhanger ending that A Realm of Lies and Power left me with, I just need to get a sense of how much vengeance and passion is going to consume me in the next read.
This story, A Realm of Lies and Power was stunning.. stunning with its creativeness that made me feel the magic. Brought me the pain of the characters. Two souls that lost so much at such a young age. One who has been a watchful guardian.. the other believing they are worthless. And she was so wrong. Davina holds the heart of Renwick. He’s drawn to her… she’s learning to trust him. He’s known as the The Shadow Walker, The Silent Assassin, but Davina will soon learn there are so many layers to this man… perhaps he’s not what the stories have made him out to be.
I was captivated by the aspects of magic in this read. The hidden secrets that were within reach, but kept hiding further and further into the dreams that haunted her. Someone was killing those closest to Davina, and she needed to find out who and why. And Renwick was not about to leave her side as she welcomed the danger to her front door.
Red tear-shaped gems, a lost sister, a traitor in the mix, powerful magic, and a wyvern with humor filled the pages. And a slow burn between two tempted hearts that will have you yelling for them to just give in to what they desire.
Oh.. did I mention the ending leaving me needing Book 2 right now?

For lovers of Avatar the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra, and most fantasy anime

I’ve avoided a lot of modern fantasies because most of them don’t snag my interest and I’m aware a lot of them involve (excessive) spice. AROLAP, however, has the same sort of vibes of fantasies I read/watched as a child and that was what originally drew me to the book.
Reading this, I was not disappointed! The plot is well thought out and captivating, and I loved the little clues in the world building about what might be occurring with Davina. There was a huge emphasis on making the story complete, but there was also a pretty satisfactory romance. Despite having spice, nothing really occurred until about 80% through the book (making for good yearning and connection between the two main characters).
The other characters in the book are also well personalized, and I enjoyed that a few of them even had multiple faces — it made the world more vibrant. There are some twisty moments in the plot, and I thought each of them was fun!
Davina’s mental/emotional state is well captured. As someone who has struggled with mental health, I loved the delicacy of portraying a character who isn’t actively “over the edge” if you will, but is still hoping for/resigned to her end.
I give it four stars because the MMC, Renwick, does come on a little strong/intense in the beginning. It makes sense as the story progresses and you learn more about him and Davina, but I did struggle with his POV in the beginning chapters. I grew to like him, though!

This book was honestly mind blowing.

I have know this author since we were 8 years old, and she has been writing since that age as well. Watching her writing develop over the years until this amazing story came to life has been a privilege.

I can genuinely say (as someone who had probably read at LEAST 50 other books this year) that this book is my top of the year and will probably be at least in the top 5 for the rest of my life (until she releases book 2 at least)

Davina’s past broke my heart but the way she manages to move forward and stay strong is inspiring. And Renwick has a totally healthy (mostly) obsession with her. I am a sucker for a morally grey man who would burn the world to the ground for his girl and he definitely fits

Their relationship comes together slowly, burning, and full of tension that will have you at the edge of your seat and sometimes yelling at the book in front of you, but it is all so worth it in the end

I am so excited continue exploring this beautiful and magical world the author has created and will definitely be first in line for book 2

Highly recommend!!

This was the perfect intro to this series! I loved all of the twists and turns. There was definitely more character development and introduction than world building, but it fit SO good! I was invested after the very first chapter.

I loved meeting and getting to know Renwick, Davina, and all of the side characters that really felt like MCs themselves. It made the betrayals hit their mark😭

Renwick and Davina both have so much internal struggle. It’s refreshing to see them slowly healing in a nonlinear way while cutting out any of the petty things normally used. The magic system is super unique. I’m obsessed with all the different kinds we’ve seen so far! Also, the whole stalking her for years without her knowing thing? Yes. 100% love it!

I’m absolutely stoked for the sequel! The cliffhanger is steep, but oh so worth it🤭

“The thoughts we had about ourselves held a lot more weight than the ideas of others”

To sum up this book, all I can say is WOW!

I adored the FMC, Davina. I could really relate to her struggles with anxiety and her self doubt. There are so many questions I have for the next book because that ending was absolutely wild… I definitely didn’t expect the twist that happened so I’ll be eagerly waiting for the next book to hopefully get answers 😭

As for the MMC, Renwick…. 🔥
I love a man that yearns and the tension was honestly perfect. The consistent reassurance and care he provided made my heart so happy. He definitely should have fessed up sooner but I can definitely understand why he was hesitant to be completely honest with Davina. I’m hopeful to get more of his POV in the next book cause I need to know what he’s doing currently!!!

I love a map and a playlist included with the book!
Also that dedication 🥹
This was an intriguing story with so many twists and turns. I enjoyed the magic system , the politics, and the back stories of the main characters.

Renwick is such a simp!
He helps her bathe.
He’s protected her for years without her knowing.
He literally breathes just for her.
But he also stole from her.
And is keeping so many secrets.

Davina is stubborn, untrusting, and petrified of her magic. She has many secrets of her own, and doesn’t want anyone helping her. She keeps everyone at arms length, because everyone she loves ends up dead or betraying her.

Forbidden magic, an assassin protector, a mystery to solve and a Wyvern with attitude is what you will find in this engaging romantasy.

Early in life Davina deals with murders that disrupt her world causing her to hide away and work at the temple even though she is not devote. Renwick, an assassin with a blood oath to the high lord, has been ordered along with Davina to find the killer of these new murders.

I loved reading the dual POV. It is a slow burn with delicious tension. I enjoyed uncovering more about the characters and the mystery as I read. The cover is beautiful, I can see the smirk in Drexus’ (the wyvern) eyes, plus you have love the gaze between Davina and Renwick.

This book has it all! A mix of cozy and high fantasy , spice, and a beautiful world!

A selection of good quotes from the book are:

"You deserve to be exactly as you are, cared for as you are."

"I think, in another life, we have already met, because I knew your soul the moment that I laid eyes on you."

"I didn't fear the darkness. I was the darkness."

This was a unique story. I loved the story with some slow burn, some murder mystery mixed with fantasy and a dash of romance.

Davina struggles with accepting all of herself and her past and our assassin is just there to support her and help her.

There were some plot twists and betrayals that you don't see coming.

The switch between POVs is seamless.

I would love some deeper dives into internal motivations that really help you see the characters emotions about the plot developments.

For a debut novel it's a great story! I can't wait to see what happens next.

I loved the tension and yearning (especially from Renwick). This book had a great plot, I loved all the twists and turns. There was so much history, magic and lore.
There was good world building- I love how it took a while to get the full backstory of the characters, so there were a lot of surprises and shocking parts! This book was action packed, secretive, and overall beautifully composed. It kept my attention beginning to end. I need book 2 now 😭

Are you looking for a new author to love? I found her!!!! Holy cow this debut was soooooo good!!!! This was such a great story filled with mystery, love, and magic. The story grabbed me from the start, it was so well written and plotted out that I did not see some of the twists that were thrown my way coming and usually I'm pretty good at guessing. Larissa really knocked it out of the park with this debut and I seriously can't wait to see what happens next especially since I did NOT see that cliffhanger coming!!
