Part of the Bestselling Series World The Immortal Ops by Mandy M. Roth
Dr. James Hagen thought he’d bid Paranormal Security and Intelligence Agency good riddance nearly ten years back. He’d been an operative with them for so long that carving out a new path in life had taken time, but he’d achieved it. He’d made it his mission in life to help the wayward find a path again, to help those who couldn’t help themselves. All that changed when he fell into enemy hands. Now, unable to fully heal and plagued by nightmares and choppy visions of what is to come, James isn’t sure if he can keep going. That is, until he meets PSI’s newest person of interest—a quirky, sexy cyberpunk who totally turns his world upside down.
Laney Steele knows she’s onto something. It doesn’t matter that most have written her off as a conspiracy theorist and a hacktivist. She knows the government is hiding the existence of super soldiers who can shapeshift into animals. She’s so sure that she puts herself on the line to find out more, only what she uncovers isn’t exactly what she was hoping for, and it has a heck of a lot more to do with her than she ever thought possible. When her newfound online gamer buddy turns out to be a super solider, she throws caution to the wind just for a chance to be with him. Neither one of them realize the enemy has been lurking, waiting for the perfect moment to strike—again.

This one annoyed me. I skimmed most of it and thought why did the author give this story so many more pages that were filler vs the previous book being so tiny.
What annoyed me - Laney. She is a super annoying TSTL one. I hate her. Her inner thoughts are repetitious, she can't say a sentence without mentioning "the man" out to get us all, and she's stupid. Yeah, yeah, she's some super hacker, but I'm calling idiot savant. Her character is what made me loathe this book, everything else was fine.
James Hagen's character I liked. Nothing to complain of, except his horrible taste in women. And my wish for her to die, die, die.
2nd book in the Immortal PSI-OPS, James Hagen story
After reading the stories prior to this, I realized that the women are becoming more and more bad ass and crazier ☺ in each book. It's also nice that we get to meet new characters and can expect more from the series. I like Gus and hopefully get to have his own story and Casey.
James and Lane's story did not disappoint it was intense, action-packed and funny (gotta love Striker and Boomer) can't also wait for their story.. 😍
I love this freaking series !! Hagen is a sex god!! Laney is a cutie pie and they couldn’t be better for each other. How can a shifter CSI agent who was captured my the “Man” for a year every be right again. I know how by finding your freaking mate on the interwebs falling dangerously in love and making fancy sweet love after you fight for your life !!
This series is literally getting better than ever I cannot understand why this series is soo damn fancy !!
So my prediction is turning out to be true, unfortunately. When I begin a series and overlook small flaws or annoyances in the first book, rarely do these go away with subsequent installments.
Authors must be tempted to follow a formula, when it has led to past success. But having the observations and internal monologue of James, as he sorts out his attraction to Laney, track so closely to Duke's from the first book feels much too paint-by-numbers, particularly her talkative bursts during periods of danger. The final straw was when Laney actually stomped her foot in frustration (what is she, 5?) and James repeatedly accepts her hands-on-hips lippy reports that "made him work for it."
In this case, we again hear over and over about Boomer's violet eyes and blue-black hair, with his silver-accented wardrobe as the new extensions of his character development. That's all ya got? Striker not only continues to use the Scottish 'nae' in every exchange, but has 'lass' added as well. *head shake*
I also wish Roth would have dealt with a couple of decent-sized inconsistencies in Laney's character, first introducing her 'noble hacking' with glossed-over details to support the Robin Hood persona, then casually mentioning the utilities supplied to the run-down hotel her cohort squats in is through her handiwork. Moreover, telling us the GothGirl is a loner, while showing her constant focus on supporting or protecting the homeless veterans in her hotel encampment was another set of misaligned pieces. To me, it's always more interesting to have someone embody degrees of both sinner and saint, but I don't see this nuance in the writing.
The newest addition to the Immortal Ops universe by Mandy M. Roth is a winner. This book in the series has "the milkshake that brings everyone to the yard. " That was a quote from the book by one kitled, scottish, ginger wolf. ( yeah I may have a team striker shirt in my closet). In this book we deal with Dr. James Hagen who spent 10 years off the ops team and the grid to deal with a mistake he made as a member of PSI-Ops. He is brought back in to the fold after being rescued and we start with him sitting in a lab a few weeks after his return. He is looking forward to an online chat with GothGirl ( our heroine). James was tortured and experimented on for over a year before his rescue. He is dealing with the physical and psychological aftermaths that he does not even want to discuss with his team mates. He has however started opening up to GothGirl about his issues, even though she is a "person of interest" by the PSI-OP's division. Laney aka GothGirl is a wicked hacker with skills that are not humanly possible and is also a friend of the blue butterfly (Dr.Mercy). Lane has all the files she hacked from the company and as fate would have it they are all on subject p87, who was James. She has also been on her own for many years after finding her parents were not her real ones and has discovered she was part of the Asia Project. You have a whole can of worms opened up in this book. The PSI-OPs and the Immortal Ops teams are both working on the issues created by the company and the other bad guys, who they have now found have people inside their teams and their governments. They don't know who to trust and have found they have been lied to for years. This is a book in a series so you do need to read in order, but the author does a wonderful job of giving us background so you do not feel that you have to go back and re-read an earlier book. PSI-Ops is a spinoff of the Immortal Ops series. I recommend both series. I will admit I would love more of an in depth book, but these books are what I call the perfect "in between books" or the " I have some time to kill at the airport or laundry mat". A good read and story, but not so long or in depth that you can't just enjoy it under an umbrella at the beach.
PSI corps takes their turn at finding their mates. James Hagen finds his paranormal match amidst danger and intrigue...with a victim of the infamous asia project. reread today and I still laughed solo hard. Re-read in august, 2017. Still laughed, still cried.
WOW!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO READ THIS ONE!!!!! Love the Immortal Ops, then you'll love this one, too. GET'EM, READ'EM, LOVE'EM, REVIEW'EM AND LET EVERYONE GET TO KNOW'EM!!!!!! WOW'EM....
Act of Surrender is the second title in the PSI Ops series which is part of the connecting Immortal Ops world. James and Laney’s story is simply further proof to me (and should be to you as well) that it doesn’t matter how long a book, a series has been around – when it touches a reader’s imagination when it consumes their reading time to read all the stories to get the full picture… the publication date makes no difference to a great story. I’m making the choice to read these stories in the author’s suggested reading order – which means that I’m jumping between series, and that is unusual for me but it does make the flow of the overlapping stories meld right into the next one so enticing.
We’ve had mention of James, even got a glimpse of him recently as he was rescued from captivity and torture – now we’ll get his full story, and it is as heartbreaking as it is fast-paced and action-filled. What this man has gone through is unimaginable, and he is having difficulty fully healing from the torture he’s gone through. An unexpected assignment will bring him to his mate… and both of their lives are about to get very interesting, perhaps more so than they’d bargained for.
Where I adored James, I just liked Laney. I’ve felt the connection between mates in all the previous stories but not so much for this couple. She makes decisions based on information, hacked information that could ultimately put her mate and the entire Immortal Ops world in very real danger. Maybe that’s why she’s not my favorite… there is innocent, want to protect silly moves, and then there are moves that harm. How I felt about Laney didn’t take away from the intensity of Act of Surrender at all, simply an opinion of a character. I loved the new characters that enter into the overall picture at this point, and I definitely want more of these guys – even Gus who is certainly unique.
Danger, fast-paced action, sizzling sexy moments, and a very unique couple to root for. If you love a good Romantic Suspense of the Paranormal kind of adventure, then this story, this series is perfect for you.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
We're deep into connected series but each of these books can be read alone. I think you will get a lot more enjoyment from them if you follow the author's suggested order. At 150 pages, these are short, exciting adventures with a bit of sex and romance thrown in.
I enjoy the connection between the characters. James Hagen was thought to be a traitor and went into hiding. While trying to protect a young supernatural, he was captured and tortured for a year. Now he's back in the PSI fold, trying to find out if a hacker is friend or enemy but while talking with her in chat rooms he's begun to not only trust her but fall for her.
Casey is an orphan who has been trying to find out about the Asia Project which has something to do with her birth. She is more than a bit of a conspiracy theorist and has been hacking into the Corporation which puts a target on her.
Not only do we get James and Casey's story but old friends and new supernaturals appear and I'm sure will get their own stories.
This author habitually ... drops the story just as it's getting to the good stuff. And the couple didn't even meet face to face until nearly 50% in! Then we get a roller coaster ride of immediate danger, lots of lust, instant mates, surprise werewolves are real, still more danger, family, sex, end.
Somewhere in all that, world building happens in dribblets and dabs, same as in each story, cruelly dragging out the breadth of variety in the world. It was only last book, which is something like 7 or 9 in the multi-series world, that we learn their are succubi! And, oddly, the first female character that seems to have a lifespan on par with all the damn immortal males in this verse who have done fuck-all with their centuries of life.
The concept of multiple paranormals living and working together but covertly and getting government and science involved is intriguing. But the narratives fail to really dive into all that culturally and historically. It just lays there waaay in the background as the couples run into each other and become insta-mates. Over and over again. Then the story cuts off and we.... move on to the next too-similar couple. There's so much potential, and occasionally we seem to progress, but the next story comes too soon and it's a repeat.
ARRGH... moving to next book..

It's a must to read this Immortal Ops: PSI Ops series in order and this is Book #2.
James and Laney start off as on-line gamers and chatters. But James is aware of a special draw to Laney. He just can't explain what it is. These two meet face to face on their first date and, boy, it all goes seemly downhill from there. This story has action, fights, an unscrupulous villain, an introduction of loveable characters Bill and Gus who makes random appearances in other PSI books, and a new character in Casey who will have his own story. It takes a while for James and Laney to come to their HEA but this is a satisfying read for me. The ending does lead to Book #3, Act of Submission, so it could be said that the ending is a HFN but for these two it is a complete ending in my opinion. This is an ARC from Booksprout but I actually did get this book back in 2014 but I was remiss in posting a review before now.
Doctor James Hagen has just been rescued from the one of the Corporations horrible experimental labs and is determined to destroy them. He’s also in contact with an online hacker, GothGirl, trying to find her, hoping she can help them before the Corporation kills her. But ever since he’s been rescued his abilities have been on the fritz and he’s not as powerful nor smart as he was before.
Meanwhile bad guy Bertrand has completely lost it. His self-experimenting has gone berserk, he’s been disowned from the Corporation and he blames Doctor Hagen for all his problems.
Laney is adorable and funny. I love it when the macho men get all tongue tired over what the girl is saying or doing.
Footnote: 1) These books end way too abruptly. They get you going with the series story then drop you off a cliff hanger. And with the couple finally getting together with no real finish except maybe an ‘I love you’ declaration and/or kiss. At least give us an epilogue.
Fave scenes: James’s phone motto, pink hair & tutus, tinfoil & ants and Laney reprimanding the wolf.
I feel like I should apologize to Mandy M.Roth for not reading these books sooner! I am hooked on the men of the Paranormal Security and Intelligence Team and their mates. This book focuses on Dr. James Hagen who was rescued after being kidnaped, tortured, and experimented on by the Corporation. His DNA has been altered and he is plagued by nightmares and fears what he may have become. He is researching and starts gaming online with "GothGirl" Laney Steele, a hacker, computer wiz, and a bit of a conspiracy theorist. He is attracted to her and she to him. When they try to meet up for coffee, a it team tries to eliminate Laney and recapture James. These books are fast paced, action packed, steamy ends and I cannot put them down. Love this series.

James is back as the Medical Officer for the PSI-Ops team. He's not healing like he should after his time with the Corporation, and his powers are on the fritz. He's been chatting online with GothGirl, a hacker PSI-Ops is keeping an eye on. There's a connection there, and they decide to meet in person for coffee ... and their "date" takes a wild turn.
The psycho Dr. Bertram has been disgraced with the Corporation, and he blames James. So he sets out to reacquire James, and take out anyone standing in his way.
Lots of action in this book, and several new characters are introduced. Bill and Gus, two odd-balls who were also experimented on by the government, but they're not shifter/supernatural in the traditional sense of the world so far. There's more to them than human though. Casey, who turns out to be another Outcast ... his book is coming soon.
This is my favorite book in this series so far. As always, the characters are so real-to-life they walk off the pages and into my heart. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they really did exist but as the characters in Ms. Roth's books they make sure that we humans remain ignorant of the things that go bump in the night.
Laney and James have the most awesome date from hell. That doesn't make a lot of sense, but it will once you read the book. And you really want to read the book. But read them in order so you can get the most out of them.
James (Jimmy) Hagen is a badass wolf shifter hottie doctor that's a bit broken. Enter Laney who has mad hacker skills, bitchen black hair with purple streaks (I'm so jealous) and a heart of gold.
I am SO confused! I keep reading these books out of order, not on purpose of course - who would do that, but it seems to happen regularly. I feel like Gus and Bill, who by the way appear to be NEW characters in this particular installment, which is truly amazing as I've reading about them both forever! Regardless, love the pair and Casey a new addition to the Outcast crew. Act of Surrender is Laney and Jimmy Hagen's novel: how they meet online, two lost souls, "hackers," playing against each other and attracted at the same time. When they finally meet in person, Laney realizes that Jimmy is the person she has been researching all along, and Jimmy senses that she might just be the mate he thought he would never have. Lovely.
I enjoyed the characters, their banter, and their storyline. The give and take between the male lead and the female lead was delightful and gave insight into their characters, making them come alive. Being in the software engineering field, I felt an affinity with Laney immediately. I was also glad to see how accepting she was of Hagen's true nature. In far too many shifter books, the mate denies her attraction to the shifter and acts like a spoiled brat, hampering not only their connection, but their very safety. Laney didn't do those things that jeopardized their safety once she met Hagen and learned his nature.
This book was such a fun read that I highly recommend it to anyone who loves shifters, adventure, and romance.
Better buckle up for this thrill ride into the paranormal PSI-OPS series book #2! This was for me a well done story of hunky shifter super soldiers, complete with mysteries, hidden secrets, doses of humor and the coming together of two characters destined for each other. Laney Steele, quirky as they come, and Dr. James Hagen, super solider. It was fun watching the back and forth between these two and the unfolding of there ultimately earned romantic HEA. Well written excursion into a series I will definitely be following.

I will admit this is my first story I have read by Ms. Roth, although I have a couple of books by her waiting in the wings. I can"t believe I waited do long to read one. Admittedly, I probably would have done better by reading the first book in the series, but I was quickly caught by Ms. Roth's beautiful world and character building. This paranormal alternate timeline story is full of emotion, humor and chemistry to make it seem like a short story that needed to be longer than a full length book. Great job and definitely look forward to reading more.
This is an honest review of an ARC.

Love Dr. James Hagen & Laney Steele's story. All the books are great reads. You won't feel lost not having read the previous books, if any, and you'll be hooked wanted to read the next!
It's well written, both the story and characters. You'll feel for James and cheer Laney on. Gotta love conspiracy theorist.
Paranormal agencies have nothing on Laney's paranoid tendencies! James is still healing from being captured, tortured and having his premonitions almost jumbled and confused.
Enjoy the story.

I thought the story line was ok, kind of similar to the first as i imagine they all will be about the shifters finding their mates. we get a continuation from the first book. there was less of the first person narration that drove me nuts but it was still there.
james meets his mate which is a hacker names Laney, the gang is all here, plenty of funny moments, some spice and a whole lot of alpha wolf.
Bertrand makes an appearance in this book a long with some homeless people that Laney has identified as family. they added a lot to the story.
Put the words paranormal, shifters, military, mates together and for some authors you have described their series. Not for Ms Roth. She creates incredibly unique characters with humorous banter in the interactions and you just want more to read. Laney or GothGirl is way different from your usual hacker and falls for LabLupus aka Dr James Hagen online. Little do they realize that they’re both trying to take down the Corporation who imprisoned and tortured James for a year until a hit squad interrupts their first meeting.
This is an interesting and entertaining story with strong characters and an action packed story line. The author does a great job developing the story and pulled me in with all the action in this fast paced story. She adds in humor along with the steamy chemistry and moves the story fluidly with her perfectly painted scenes. I loved watching the couple come together and enjoyed reading their story.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
The second book in the Paranormal Security and Intelligence an Immortal Ops World Novel (PSI-Ops / Immortal Ops series a well written Sci-Fi story that kept me turning pages. Dr. James Hagen thought he left the Paranormal Security and Intelligence Agency behind and then he gets kidnapped. James after his ordeal is ready to quit his life when he meets Laney Steele. This story has suspense, drama, danger, evil a villain, and a couple that was meant to be together. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
For the longest time I thought that Gus was an old man. The way you described him in this book, I was thinking he was as old or older than Bill.
Now about Jimmy, what is it about alpha males, that when they meet their mates they either don't believe it, or they loose their damn minds? I mean really? You watch your team mates find theirs and think they are dumb for not realizing what is going on. And you end up acting the same way when it happens to you! Males are morons!
I like Mandy M Roth as an author but this book dragged. You are two fifths of the way through the book before the two lead characters even meet face to face which would be fine if the story leading up to that was interesting but unfortunately I did not think it was, although you might enjoy it.
There is a lot of repetition throughout but I hope the next book will be better or I may just give up on the series.
Loving the Immortal World series as a whole, but I'm seriously not liking how abruptly the individual stories are ending. Personally, I think $5-$6 is too much for how short these stories are, and I think the author is doing her fans a disservice by charging so much for so little writing. I'm only continuing the series because I'm really interested in seeing how the whole thing wraps up and how theses shifters find their mates.
James a battered wolf shifter that was tortured by The Corporation for over a year starts chatting on line with a woman the PSI Ops thinks is working with the corporation. James is sure Goth girl(Laney) is actually trying to out the corporation because she seeks the corporation is evil. Things go crazy when James and Laney meet for a coffee date. I highly recommend this book and series.
PSI-OPs and the Immortal Ops teams find themselves on the same side trying to sort out the problems created by the company. Who can they trust? They don't know and have found they have been fed lies to for many years. I have not read anything that I have not loved that Mandy as written. Her writing always leaves me wanting more and thinking about the characters long after I have finished the book.
Paranormal Security and Intelligence Operative Dr. James Hagen has lost hope in ever finding a mate. Jame can't stop thinking about the beautiful woman from his most recent nightmarish vision. James is convinced she's in serious trouble but doesn't know who or where she is. What happens when James meets his online friend Laney Steele for a date and realises she's the woman in that vision ... and also his mate?
