On the run through the mountains— with only each other to trust.
Amanda Cotton’s privileged life takes a harrowing turn when her grandfather’s dying wish places a target firmly on her back and she’s attacked by unknown assailants. Rescue comes in the form of widowed outdoorsman Boone McGregor, but the threat is just beginning. Unable to trust local law enforcement, they flee across the rugged Montana mountains. As they evade deadly enemies and navigate harsh terrain, they must put aside their differences to survive. But when a family secret is exposed, danger is closer than they imagined and more than just their lives is at stake…
Carrie Stuart Parks is Christy, Carol, and Inspy award-winning author, an award-winning fine artist, and internationally known forensic artist. Along with her husband, Rick, she travels across the US and Canada teaching courses in forensic art to law enforcement as well as civilian participants. She has won numerous awards for career excellence. Carrie is a popular platform speaker, presenting a variety of topics from crime to creativity.
I loved the non-stop action and suspense as much as I loved Parks’ ability to ground me in the 5 senses. Parks highlighted one or more of the 5 senses every page or two, pulling me into the plot and making sure I saw, felt, smelled, tasted or heard what her characters were experiencing.
Parks whisked me away to Wolfe's Lair, Montana and introduced me to two characters who didn't realize they needed rescuing. Boone McGregor had been throwing himself into his work as a coping mechanism for his grief, and Amanda Cotton had unknowingly stepped into the limelight and set off an unstoppable chain of events when she decided to uncover family secrets. Boone and Amanda learned that by trusting each other, they could rescue each other.
I loved how the puzzle pieces came together slowly and how invaluable Boone’s Bernese mountain dog, Cookie, proved to be.
The biggest reminder for me was not to take everything at face value.
I'm looking forward to another story by this talented author.
Wow, what a ride! If you're looking for a page turning suspense filled with tension, danger, and just the right amount of charm, including off-tune singing and a dog named Cookie, this one delivers.
When Amanda's grandfather asks her to write a book about her late mother's life, she never imagines the request will lead to danger. The same day he gives her a few of her mother’s old belongings and makes the request, he passes away. From that moment on, Amanda becomes a target. Someone out there believes she knows something or has something that could expose a long buried truth.
To make matters worse, the law isn’t on her side. Instead of offering protection, authorities suspect her! With no one to turn to, Amanda goes on the run. But fate intervenes in the form of Boone, a widowed outdoorsman who happens to witness an attack on Amanda. He steps in to protect her, and suddenly two complete strangers are thrown together in a fight for their lives. She’s an wealthy woman with secrets, and he’s a rugged loner who can’t walk away from someone in need. Though they come from completely different worlds, Boone is the only person Amanda can trust.
Who is after Amanda, and what truth are they so desperate to keep hidden?
I loved this story. It was suspenseful, emotional, and had the perfect balance of action and heart. I couldn’t figure it out and I think that kept me glued to the pages. I gave this one a solid 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 because it truly gripped me from beginning to end. If I had one wish, it would be for a little more time with the couple at the end, maybe an epilogue. Only because I didn’t want it to be over.
I can’t wait to read more from this author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.
What drew me in most was how naturally I could see myself in these characters … their struggles, their choices, their prayers. From the first moments, their faith felt familiar, like echoes of my own walk with Christ. This wasn’t a story I observed at a distance; it was one I stepped into, because the faith within it was lived with honesty and strength.
The beauty of Escaping the Wilderness rests in how faith breathes through every page. The characters prayed with urgency, trusted with conviction, and leaned on Christ in ways that reminded me what true courage looks like. Their faith was their lifeline. Listening left me both gripped by the suspense and gently called back to deeper trust in the Lord.
Carrie Stuart Parks’ writing and Samantha Desz’s narration came together in a way that felt like a rare gift. The story was strong, the voice was steady, and the pairing was seamless … the kind of audiobook I want more of. I finished with a quiet prayer of thanks for stories this rich in both craft and faith, brought to life with narration that made every moment ring true.
For me, this was more than suspense; it was a reminder of the God who meets us in every trial, holding us fast when the wilderness closes in.
Perfect for listeners longing for high-quality Christian suspense where faith is lived out courageously.
I received a digital audio ARC from the publisher via NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the great writing, engaging narration, and the story’s wonderful content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
Escaping the Wilderness is a page-turning, fast-paced, suspenseful story with a touch of romance. Amanda, attacked and hunted by men who want her dead, runs into Boone, who helps keep her safe. The story had lots of twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and lots of issues of who to trust.
The characters were well-developed, with many layers and lots of secrets. The mountain wilderness is a great backdrop for the story, especially with an approaching snowstorm. I held my breath in some places, wondering what would happen next. A very exciting, action-packed story with a great ending.
I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
This is a Romantic Suspense. I read this book by listening to the audiobook for this book, and I liked the audiobook. The main female character (Amanda) drove me crazy. I think because I found the main female character was self centered and drove me crazy it took away from my liking this book. I also found the action was a little too much. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
“I’m also sending you the Bible I bought with the passages marked. I really need to change what’s between us and make things right, one way or the other. This deception can’t continue. If all else fails, I’ll send you the key.”
Amanda Morton’s deceased mother has left a cryptic letter to her father, Amanda’s grandfather. Carrie Parks Stuart sets her Love Inspired romantic suspense, Escaping the Wilderness, in a remote, mountainous area of Montana. Amanda’s mother, before her death, is largely absent in Amanda’s life. Amanda’s caring grandfather has given her the “assignment” to go off grid with some of her mother’s belongings and write what she discovers about her mother. She is told to “get to know my mother through my heart, not my head.”
Unfortunately, Amanda barely starts on this adventure before she is physically attacked, and her rental house and her mother’s belongings are destroyed by ruthless men. Boone MacGregor gets involved when he sees the original attack on Amanda. Thinking he will quickly get her to safety, it is soon evident that safety is hard to come by. Helicopters, drones, snowstorms, a fire, and much more all point to the fact that Amanda is hiding something. Yet, Amanda herself doesn’t know what she possesses that would be worth igniting this maelstrom of disaster.
It took me a while to become invested in these characters. I remained fairly detached until about midway through the book. Then it seemed the action kicked into urgent overdrive ( because it already was intense) and I finally cared very much about Amanda and Boone. I followed their progress closely as they had to decide who to trust, and if his simple rancher’s world can meld with her high society world, enough to even work together. “They were worlds apart. When they got out of this, could he fit into her world? Would she fit into his?”
Cookie, Boone’s Bernese Mountain dog, is a force that unites them. She is a poignant, beautiful part of the story sure to appeal to any dog lovers.
At first, faith is another area that drives a wedge between the two. Boone is a firm believer in prayer, Amanda has rejected it after her prayers for several people go “ unanswered.” Boone is not afraid to pray aloud. When Amanda dubs him religious, Boone responds, “Religion is man’s response to the Creator. I have faith in the completed works of Jesus Christ. There’s a difference.” That starts Amanda thinking, as she watches Boone’s care and prayers for her as they have several enemy encounters.
I am not going to hang up my detective shingle yet. I thought I knew who was the mastermind early on, but there are so many moving parts and people that the truth gets hidden! And the twists! I got whiplash, for sure!! Well done, Ms. Parks.
I received a copy of the book from JustRead Tours. I also bought my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“Sometimes family secrets take on a life of their own,” -Boone
“Even the kindest, most thoughtful and loving people can have a side we never see.” -Boone
“I truly believe everything happens for a reason, though I may not know, nor ever know that reason. I just have to trust the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, will work things out.” - Colleen
“Trust was a fragile thing, easily shattered,” - Amanda
Boone McGregor sees a woman getting attacked and intervenes to save her. Amanda Cotton is on a quest, directed by her grandfather, when the attack happens. Now she is the target of relentless pursuers. This kicks off Escaping The Wilderness by author Carrie Stuart Parks, a high octane, heart thumping suspense. I really enjoyed this story. The way both Boone and Amanda are smart and resourceful, the twists and turns that keep you guessing, and the faith thread that is clearly, but gently, woven throughout. The book doesn’t have an official epilogue (which we know is my favorite), but the last chapter is still very satisfying. Grab this story and settle in! My thanks for the complimentary copy of this book. My opinion is my very own.
I fell in love with Carrie Stuart Parks' riveting suspense after reading her larger novels so when I saw her name on a Love Inspired Suspense book, well, it went right up near the top of my want to read list. I knew there was no way that Escaping The Wilderness could disappoint....and I was right.
The story starts off with a rather amusing horse but, oh, does it take off from there. Before you know it our heroine and her hero are on the run facing bad guys, wild animals, blizzards, and more. It's been a little while since I've read a Love Inspired Suspense and it was fun to dive back in with an author that I really enjoy and a story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Trust me, Escaping The Wilderness is a wild ride of danger, suspense, mystery, betrayal, and secrets. Oh, and it has some lovely romantic sparks thrown in there too.
One of the things that I really liked about this book is that Carrie Stuart Parks chose to avoid the usual law enforcement or military career for one or both of her lead characters. I thought that it really added to the suspense that neither were skilled operatives but both had skills and knowledge – he in the wilderness and she in society – that help them. Speaking of the wilderness, I also loved the western Montana setting.
Escaping The Wilderness is fun relatively quick read that is well worth the time. Carrie Stuart Parks did a great job with her first foray into Love Inspired Suspense and I can't wait to read more from her....
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
an exciting new romantic suspense from carrie stuart parks!
when danger strikes, amanda cotton's only hope for help seems to be boone mcgregor. their escape takes plenty of twists and turns, not knowing who to trust, as they try to uncover the reasons behind the pursuit.
amanda and boone are from different worlds, but their time together helps them seem the possibilities the other person offers. there were a few times that boone said something that sounded odd to me, but overall, i enjoyed their budding relationship amidst the chaos and danger. the suspense, too, is well-done with lots of action and surprises, and it all blends together for a fun read.
(i received a complimentary copy from the author and/or publisher. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)
considerations: —language: none —spice: kisses only —faith: mentions of God, prayer, and salvation —content: violence, death, crime, mentions of loss of family/spouse
Escaping the Wilderness is a breathless, wild ride for Amanda Cotton's very life. With a man she isn't even acquainted with, but who comes to her rescue when his horse and a black-hoodie-wearing man both seem to want something from her. The hoodie-clad man is the one who gets it, though.
But Amanda doesn't even know why anyone would want to steal her alpaca socks which she only ordered because her feet obviously needed them, in freezing winter Montana. And she's only in Montana because her grandfather asked her to go away somewhere to write her mother's story; her mother, who was murdered when Amanda was a child. So, she has. But now, the horse has backed her up against her truck; a man stole her socks package; and a handsome yet road-weary man has come to her rescue. Boone; who's carrying his own load of sorrow.
Though they're nothing yet but acquaintances, a wild road together is ahead of them. One filled with danger, attempted murder, injury, and suspicion. But maybe more than that. Maybe love. And faith.
I highly recommend this novel! You won't be able to put it down.
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions shared here are my own honest ones.
A gripping novel of suspense and mystery which includes a strong faith message and a bond which grows between two very different individuals as they work together to survive . . .
This is the first book by this author that I've read—but it definitely won't be the last! The author offers fans of this genre a peek at the finest elements of Christian romantic suspense—surprising revelations, detailed settings, multi-dimensional characters, a well-defined faith message, and a hint of romance between the lead characters.
After being pursued relentlessly, the lead characters hesitate to trust anyone. However, their very survival depends on the kindness of strangers at more than one point in the story. By letting God guide their way, Amanda and Boone eventually find their way out of the tangled web of this dangerous and intricate mystery.
I appreciate that the author sprinkled meaningful Scripture throughout the story and included discussions between the characters about their beliefs or lack of understanding about a relationship with God.
The book is completely clean in language and content. I received a copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my comments and opinions shared here are solely my own.
If you are looking for an exciting contemporary novel filled with drama and adventure then this is the book for you. It is also a fast paced quick and easy read. In a way this story is vaguely familiar with The Most Dangerous Game if you by any chance remember that story from your high school english class days. Overall I found this book to be highly entertaining and it kept me on edge.
We are introduced to Amanda who after the death of her grandfather suddenly finds herself being hunted for some unknown reason. She ends up being saved by a man named Boone. However, law enforcement isn’t exactly reliable when it comes to getting the problem solved. Instead Amanda and Boone find themselves out on their own to seek answers for their troubles. This journey across the land will end up sparking some newfound feelings. However, do they have what it takes to survive.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher all opinions are of my own.
I’m a huge fan of Carrie Stuart Parks and I was excited to read her new book. It’s a thrill ride, start to finish.
Amanda is trying to stay somewhat incognito at her grandfather’s request. A happenstance mistake allowed an attack in a public parking lot.
Enter Boone, coming to her rescue and helping her investigate exactly what is going on and why someone is after her.
The romance is light and the suspense is heavy. Have fun trying to figure out who’s behind it all and what they want. I figured out the who but the why blew me away!
I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited.
Excellent Christian suspense that will keep you reading until you finish the entire book! You won’t want to set it down as the action continues from page to page, giving rare breaks for you to catch your breath before you go spiraling when the next wave of danger hits. The plot is well written and I thought I had everything figured out when I was hit with a plot twist I never saw coming. I enjoyed getting to know Boone and Amanda, and Scout and Cookie added some fun to the story. This was a delightful quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed!! I read an advanced reader copy from the author, all thoughts and opinions in this review are true and original. I definitely recommend reading this book!
Carrie Stuart Parks’ Out of the Wilderness blends gripping suspense with heartfelt affection in a story set against the breathtaking—and perilous—Montana mountains. Through a series of harrowing challenges, Amanda Cotton and Boone McGregor are forced to rely on one another, forging a bond that is both sweetly affectionate and quietly profound. Their connection grows with every escape, rescue, and secret revealed, giving listeners an uplifting sense of hope and devotion even amid life-threatening danger.
The audiobook’s Christian themes are deeply interwoven with the plot, shaping both the characters’ motivations and their responses to adversity. Trusting God is not just a background element—it becomes the cornerstone as Amanda and Boone navigate betrayal, family secrets, and moments of deep uncertainty. Their faith gives them strength and direction, offering comfort as they confront both internal fears and external threats.
The pacing keeps listeners engaged, and Samantha Desz’s narration immerses the audience in every tense moment and tender interaction. While some plot twists may feel familiar to seasoned suspense fans, the combination of adventure, romance, and faith delivers an experience that is both exciting and nourishing.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. An ideal pick for fans of inspirational romantic suspense, with a beautiful message of courage, affection, and trust in God woven into every chapter.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy to review. All opinions are my own.
"Just so I have an idea of how bad this situation is, tell me what you did-" "I didn't do anything." Correction. Tell me what you didn't do, who you didn't kill, or where you didn't escape from that seems to have drawn such a homicidal reaction."
Amanda thought she had found a quiet location to reflect on her mother's life and story. When she finds herself running for her life, she wonders if someone is mistaken about her. She has no explanation. Boone is not convinced. But he also can't leave the woman helpless and alone? Can they discover the truth together.
Montana has plenty of places to hide and equally as many places where possibilities of peril are plentiful. This is the perfect setting for a suspense book.
I think I have read all of the author's other novels. But this one had a different feel. I think that is incredibly hard for an experienced author to change the voice enough for the book to feel fresh and unique. Carrie Stuart Parks managed to do that in a brilliant way.
This book had a creative and unusual plot. So many parts kept me guessing. And whenever I thought I might know what was coming, another twist would turn it around. I would highly recommend this book.
I did get to read this book as a part of a tour. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.
Escaping the Wilderness by Carrie Stuart Parks is a non-stop action suspense read from Love Inspired Suspense.
Amanda Cotton has lived a life of means, never wanting for anything. Her mom died when she was younger and now, her grandfather tells her to write about her mom. Looking at some things that belonged to her mom, things seem off and when the bullets start flying, she is in a run for her life.
Outdoorsman, Boone MacGregor, rescues Amanda and then is tasked with trying to keep her alive, alive long enough to find answers before it's too late.
Will they find the answers they need before it's too late? Can Boone look past the pain of his own losses to see Amanda as more than a wealthy heiress?
This was a great-quick read that will hold your attention the entire time.
Escaping the Wilderness by Carrie Stuart Parks is one wild ride. Boone McGregor witnesses an attack on a woman and steps into action to save her. Little does he know that Amanda Cotton's life is on the line. She's being hunted, and the two go on the run while trying to unravel why someone wants Amanda dead.
I loved this story from start to finish. Escaping the Wilderness is fast-paced and witty, while still allowing readers the chance to get to know the characters. Amanda and Boone are complete opposites. They come from completely different worlds, but they realize just how great they are for each other - while trying to stay alive.
If you love high-stakes suspense, action and a determined hero and heroine, look no further than Escaping the Wilderness. I reviewed the audiobook version, and I loved the narration. It added to the excitement of the story.
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Amanda Cotton’s life of papered luxury is quickly turned upside down when a secret from her dying grandfather puts her in a fight for her life.
Widower and outdoorsman Boone McGregor wasn’t expecting to find a woman hiding from gunfire. He pairs up with Amanda and is determined to help keep her safe from relentless attacks on her life.
When Boone and Amanda get lost in the wilderness trying to escape, will they be able to find their way to safety before it’s too late?
I am so excited to be participating in the Blog + Review Tour for @justreadtours as they feature Carrie’s first romantic suspense book!💚
This book was a really quick read (which I love) and was packed with suspense, adventure, and romance.
Every time I thought the characters were safe, something would happen and it had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it would end!
The main struggle I had with this book personally was connecting to the characters. There wasn’t a whole lot of background on either Boone or Amanda aside from very brief details. I do think they make a great couple together, but the connection with them went from 0-100. It felt forced and awkward given that Boone is a widower. He and Amanda had mentioned several times that they didn’t know how it would work due to differences in lifestyles. And all of a sudden it was resolved.
I really enjoyed Boone’s woodsy and outdoorsman personality! He was classic outdoorsman and I loved that! Amanda did annoy me at times because there were some things that just didn’t make sense from her POV (I can’t get into this without spoilers haha)🤗
I do with the book was longer and had a bit longer of an ending as it did feel rushed. However, the book was still really enjoyable and engaging! I just wish there was a bit more depth to some areas.
I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future!❤️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Excellent story! I love the way the author is able to add so much character depth even in a shorter length novel. Lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing and turning pages! Highly recommend!
Thank you to Carrie Stuart Parks, Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense, Harlequin Audio, and NetGalley for allowing me early access to this audiobook for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Amanda is in small town Montana when suddenly she becomes a target but her rescue comes in the form of widowed outdoorsman, Boone. They go on the run.
There were things I enjoyed about this book. It was very fast paced, as is generally the case with these Love Inspired Suspense stories. However, I feel like we just jumped to the conclusion at the end. One minute the main character did not know what was going on, then all of the sudden she did. It felt like we,the readers, were missing information. Then of course it was very instalove trope heavy. Again at the end, it feels like we go from zero to six in less than sixty seconds. Overall, I enjoyed the adventure of it; I just wish we would have gotten more of depth that I am accustomed to with Stuart’s writing.
The narrator was fine! I didn’t find her to be particularly astounding, but she more than kept my attention, and I could definitely listened to other things narrated by her.
I think anyone who enjoys reading these Love Inspired Suspense stories will enjoy this book. I think people who enjoy Carrie Stuart Parks normal books might be a tad disappointed with this one. #EscapingtheWilderness #NetGalley
Escaping the Wilderness by Carrie Stuart, Narrated by Samantha Desz. This is an action packed suspense with twists and turns. Quick read that will keep you guessing. Thank you to #NetGalley and #Harlequin Audio for this Arc. This is my honest review. Releases Sept 30 2025
A fast paced suspense with lots of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page! I love how the narrator brought this story to life!
I received an audio ARC through Netgalley and all opinions are my own.
Escaping the Wilderness is the first book I’ve read by Carrie Stuart Parks, but it won’t be the last. I just couldn’t stop reading it and finished it in a day. Of course, I stayed up past my bedtime, but sometimes books just must be read! This Love Inspired Suspense has nonstop action that will keep you on the edge of your seats (or beds…).
I love books that have the non-stop, on-the-run kind of action, and this really does! Not only that but also it’s really cold and wet and miserable. I wouldn’t want to be IN the book, but it’s really exciting to read about the characters’ escape! Those characters are Amanda and Boone.
Through God’s providence, Boone happens to be at the right place just when Amanda needs rescuing. Amanda has no idea why, but suddenly she’s in the crosshairs of some really bad people who want something she has. They don’t care if they kill her in the process of getting it either. Now they’re after Boone too since he’s helping her. In addition to the danger of being on the run in the wilderness, the bad guys have super-expensive, high-tech equipment to track them! Now, that really stressed me out!
Throughout everything, Boone kept praying and trusting that God’s will would be done. By witnessing Boone’s faith, Amanda began to pray and turn to God. Sometimes the most awful circumstances lead people to come to trust and put their faith in Jesus Christ.
I highly recommend this book to those of you who love inspirational suspense with a bit of romance. This one has strong characters, a bit of humor, a big and fluffy dog, and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the end! 5 stars!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Author Carrie Stuart Parks has written a fun, fast paced, page-turning and inspiring suspense story that readers will enjoy. It's a quick and easy read that will keep readers on their toes. There are multiple twists and turns to keep readers guessing, as well as a light romance theme. This is the perfect read for fall.

Escaping the Wilderness is the first book I’ve read by Carrie Stuart Parks and I loved it so much. Non-stop action right from the start made it hard to put down. The plot kept me in suspense the entire time. When Amanda finds herself in danger, Boone comes to the rescue and makes it his mission to keep her safe. While she is not sure who she can trust, she needs his help to survive.
Amanda and Boone find themselves on the run through the mountain wilderness and trapped in an oncoming snowstorm. Danger followed them every step of the way and kept me on the edge of my seat. I really loved the characters. Both Boone and Amanda displayed intelligence and resourcefulness to stay one step ahead of their pursuers. The ending perfectly wrapped up this great story.
