The Wild Horizon #2

The Mountains Between Us

Rate this book
California, 1848. She was warned not to go after him. That no woman could survive alone in gold rush California. That her missing husband was surely dead.

But Grace Randolph knows James isn’t just missing, he’s being held captive by one of the most powerful men in the territory. And her marriage – forged on the perilous Oregon trail, tested by her husband’s war service and the lawlessness of the gold fields – is worth fighting for.

As she saddles up her horse and frets over the plan a final time, she reminds herself she has shot a man before, survived the hardship of the trail, and rebuilt their life after a fire destroyed everything they had. She has never stopped loving her husband, even on those nights when he lay beside her, inches away but somehow unreachably distant.

Now she must cross mountains to rescue him – and save her marriage.

A story of courage, redemption and the unbreakable strength of a woman’s heart. Fans of The Paper Palace, Where the Crawdads Sing and A Girl Called Samson will be captivated by this breathtaking love story.

Imogen writes sweeping, historical fiction set in nineteenth century America.

As a teenager, she took the Greyhound bus from San Francisco to New York. Over those three days of staring out of the window at the majestic mountains and endless flat plains, stories wound themselves into her head: tales of brooding, charismatic men captivated by independent women.

Since then, she has worked in a coffee-shop in Piccadilly London, a famous bookstore, and a children’s home. She has run festivals, and turned a derelict housing block on one of the poorest estates in the UK into an award-winning arts centre.

During 2020 Imogen was selected by Kate Nash Literary Agency as one of their BookCamp mentees, a mentorship programme designed to accelerate the careers of promising new writers.

Married with two children, Imogen divides her time between Wales and Sardinia.

It was 1848 when Grace Randolph and her husband James left Oregon and Grace's siblings and family; she was sad to leave them, especially her brother Tom. He was still young - she hated to be so far away from him. But she needed to be at her husband's side as they set off for California to make their fortune, with the gold fields seducing many. Finding a lovely spot to set up camp beside a river, which would hopefully produce gold, Grace and James were happy. After several months they decided to pack up camp and head for the new town called San Francisco. As the Randolph's procured some land by the wharf, as well as for a home, James began building warehouses. His vision for the future was a good one which would make them wealthy. The small cottage which was built for Grace took the possessions they'd been carrying on their mules. They were working hard, and were content. But danger was on the horizon - lawlessness was fraught in the new colonies, and men took it onto themselves to serve justice.

When James left with friend Geoff and his son Simon, Geoff's wife Hillary stayed in San Francisco with their daughters and Grace. The men were going searching for gold once more. Grace and Hillary had heard nothing of their men for months, and when they heard terrible news they weren't sure what to do. But the women were determined...

The Mountains Between Us is #2 in The Wild Horizon series by Imogen Martin and I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I did the first. The blurb was misleading, as the "mountains between us" section didn't occur until three quarters of the way through. But the characters themselves were hard working young people, women and men, and also quite diverse. I enjoyed the introduction of Cora as well as Ling Mei and really hope there's another book to continue Grace's story. Highly recommended.

The Mountains Between Us takes place during the California gold rush. As a California girl myself, I just had to request this book! My husband also pans for gold in our local rivers, so I was excited to get accepted for this ARC.

James and Grace Randolph journey to California from the Oregon Trail in hopes that rumors of Gold are true. In the beginning, they had great success until other “forty-niners” started to make their claim. James and Grace hoped for a better future, but lawlessness was something they did not expect.

I enjoyed this story and loved that Imogen Martin accurately described the process of gold panning. I can tell she did a lot of research for this book. I wanted to know the origins of James and Grace, but I found it lacking. I wanted more! This novel can be read as a stand-alone even though it’s part of a series. I would’ve enjoyed it better if I would’ve known.

Last year I read a book by this author (To The Wild Horizon) and loved it. When I saw a new book by her, I jumped at the chance to read it. I was more than pleasantly surprised that it was a sequel to the previous book……same characters, continuing on their life's journey.

It's hard to classify this book: historical novel, western, women's fiction, love story (NOT cheesy romance). It's a combination of all. And best of all, it features a very strong woman(Grace) during times when women were not expected to be strong.

The book focuses on the wild and lawless times of the California Gold Rush. It is set mostly in San Francisco's very early days, just getting settled. It graphically illustrates the hardships the people endured. I learned more about the gold rush than I thought I wanted to know….and, it is very interesting.

There were lots of interesting scenes. Some pretty graphic violence (among the gold rush prospectors, no women involved). A ton of interesting characters. There are a couple of Parisienne courtesans, lovely ladies. And, a diverse selection of other characters converging for the Goldrush.

Ms Martin writes excellent stories, both books really captivated me. This book could be a stand-alone, but to anyone reading this review, I strongly suggest you read To the Wild Horizon first. It would really help to understand Grace and Randolph and their character development. This is a link to my review of the first book, also posted on NG.

The ONLY negative I have is that the book ended. It was over. I did not want it to end. I have my fingers crossed that it ends up as a trilogy.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.

4.75 ⭐

Wow! I was intrigued the entire time I was reading this book! Although it is book two of a series and I haven’t read the first book, I wasn’t left feeling confused or annoyed that I didn’t know what was going on. Of course, I’d love to read the story about how Grace and James met and the friendships that span into this book, so someday I will. ☺️

The plot was fantastic. I was on the edge of my seat while I read, wanting to know what happened next to these characters. The story flowed well with a steady and even pace and was thematically structured, even with the different point-of-views that would switch up mid-chapter. I wasn’t bored for a single moment. The setting was perfect for this story and I felt so immersed in the beauty of the California landscape. The writing was easy to read, clear, and engaging. In other words, it was amazing. 😂 I didn’t give the book the full five stars because, in the blurb, it makes the “Grace rescuing her husband” thing sound like it is the main plot when it’s not. I expected it to be in the book sooner than it was, but it’s no biggie. I still enjoyed it. ☺️

The characters were my favorite. They changed and grew into better people. They made mistakes and owned up to them…eventually. Try getting two strong-headed, determined, and independent people to apologize and admit they were wrong. I know. Whoever can do that kind of miracle deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. 😂 But really, they were great. The Randolphs’s friends were also amazing and I felt like I was a part of their circle as they tried to survive the booming and lawless town of San Fransisco and overcome hardships that inevitably come. I rooted for all of them, especially Grace and James when their marriage was rocky. And the girl power was so great. The women weren’t cold, insufferable, or arrogant nor were they overly-emotional pushovers. It’s great to read about women who are strong yet feminine. ♥️

Imogen Martin is a brilliant writer! I totally recommend this book if you love historical fiction, believable characters, and a wonderful story of love, strength, courage, and redemption.

I received an arc from Storm Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and statements are my own.

(Please note that there is a short scene about a couple making love or whatever you want to call it. It doesn’t ruin the story or anything. Just letting you know so that if you don’t dig that sort of thing, it won’t come as a shock to you when you read. 👍)

This is the book I never expected to write. At the end of To The Wild Horizon, I thought Grace and James Randolph would happily ride away into the sunset. But I wanted to know more, and readers wanted to know more! So here they are, two years later and, dear reader, things are not going well. Something has happened to James whilst serving in the army, and Grace is quietly mourning her childlessness.

What a brilliantly written story. I loved it!
The Mountain Between Us is a story set in the gold rush era around San Francisco and California in the 1800s.
Grace Randolph and her husband, James, have just travelled far, to get to her brother's home in Oregon hoping to settle when news comes of gold being found.
Eager to be among the first, James plans to leave to join the Argonauts already there, and Grace accompanies him, begrudgingly leaving her brothers to be with her husband.
The tale details the hardships they face along the way, the successes they savour and the tragedies.
They forge new friendships ,and unfortunately make new enemies, as well as welcoming faces of old.
During one period of hardship, Grace is left alone, with another woman and her family, as the menfolk go to find more gold to support their families, and James is captured.
It is not the story of just one woman's bravery, but of several, in their own way, forging a path that rescues the captured men, and begins to create justice in a lawless society.
Grace is a tough woman, who I admired.
Ling Mei, a Chinese immigrant, brings her own calm and knowledge to their story.
And I did love Cora, one of a pair of French sisters, originally brought over as courtesans to work in a saloon, but who show their own strength of character as they build their own business.
I read this pretty quickly, eager to know how it ended, and I'm mighty glad that there is already a book detailing how James and Grace met, which I was unaware of.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for an ARC.

Just love this series of books by Imogen Martin, absolutely enjoyed following Grace and Toms journey across the planes of the Wild West and the reasons for them both setting off on their journey. Grace’s turbulent relationship with Captain Randolph which turns into love. This books focuses on reconnecting with Graces brothers before setting off on another adventure to find gold. You won’t be disappointed with this book, it’s such a good read and excellent storyline with lovely characters.
I really hope there will be another follow up

*I received a copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this opportunity*

3.5 stars, rounded up

The next installment of Grace and Tom's story, THE MOUNTAINS BETWEEN US opens with the couple finally reaching Grace's brother's farmstead in rural Oregon. However, despite the peaceful surroundings and promise of a good farming life, Tom is haunted by his dishonorable dismissal from the US Army and something else he's not sharing with his beloved wife; and for herself, Grace struggles with infertility and her longing for a child. The decision is made to strike out towards California, where whispers of gold-filled mountains have begun luring men to the unsettled valley from around the world.

The promise of financial security and the thrill of adventure spurn the couple onward, but the road is long and paved with blood, sweat, and tears.

While I had not read the first book in their series, it wasn't strictly necessary to enjoy this story. I do believe, however, my enjoyment of the character development of Grace and Tom would have been deeper had I known the beginning of their stories. This book was an approachable fictionalization of the wilds and lawlessness of California during the gold rush, and while it gleaned over some of the harsher realities , Martin took care to allude to the practices without discussing the horrors-- which would make this an appropriate choice for a reader with more delicate sensibilities. I was impressed with Martin's attention to detail in depicting life in early San Francisco and the practice of gold mining; and I also enjoyed the characters.

Grace's character especially had a difficult line to walk; Grace was so obviously a fiercely independent and capable woman, but, as per usual during the 1800s, she held deference for her husband (even when he was making bad decisions for the couple). As a member of a more modern audience, I applaud Martin's ability to create and sustain a character than embodied these rather conflicting personality traits. Tom, while not my favorite character in the book, was memorable in the realism in which he was portrayed; a war veteran struggling with not only PTSD (not diagnosed in the book, which is historically accurate), but also the weight of caring for his family and no idea how to do so.

I was pleasantly surprised with THE MOUNTAINS BETWEEN US, and I look forward to exploring some of Martin's other books in the near future!

Thank you to @imogenmartinauthor @stormbooks_co @netgalley for the #gifted e-book.

The captivating journey of James and Grace from The Wild Horizon series unfolds against the backdrop of California during the wild gold rush of 1848. After being mysteriously discharged from the army, James carries a heavy burden, one he has yet to reveal to Grace. While they initially plan to visit Grace's brothers in Oregon, James makes a pivotal decision to venture southward to California in quest for fortune. What begins as an adventure filled with hope quickly spirals into heartache, challenging the very foundation of their marriage.

I loved the first book and the journey of Grace and James on the Oregon trail. This story beautifully illustrates a transformation from heartbreak to triumph, showcasing Grace as a remarkable female character who defies the norms of her time. In an era when women's voices were often silenced, she exhibits incredible strength and unwavering support for James, even as he grapples with his inner turmoil alone. The moment he finally opens up about his struggles is profoundly poignant, deepening the emotional connection between them.

The vivid portrayal of the California gold rush era, alongside the hardships faced by settlers, adds to the story and brings to life California's evolution into the 31st state. The writing is exquisite, capturing both the breathtaking landscapes and the complex emotions of the characters. The theme of Providence weaves throughout the narrative, adding layers of depth and meaning.

If you're a fan of historical fiction intertwined with a compelling love story, this book is an absolute must-read. Mark your calendars—it's set to be released on February 18, 2025!

James and Grace Randolph return to Oregon to her brothers with an unsure future ahead of them as James has left the army under questionable circumstances. “The Captain” isn’t sure what his future holds and quickly discovers that farming isn’t it. Hearing of the success of others panning for gold in California, the couple heads south to join the gold rush taking over the newest state.

Though initially successful, setbacks plague the couple causing friction in the young marriage. When James finds himself in trouble, Grace once again proves herself an extraordinary woman of the era and comes to the rescue in a multitude of ways. It’s Grace who really shines in this sequel proving that women should not be underestimated.

The story starts off a little slow in the first quarter of the book as the couple continually laments their bad luck, but the pace quickly picks up as they find their future in California. The second half of the book will have readers finding it hard to set the story aside. The secondary characters added to the sequel are both rich and compelling. Mei Ling’s steadfast loyalty and Cora’s business acumen make Grace’s journey all the more interesting and entertaining. “The Mountains” are both physical and metaphorical between the young couple, but in the end only make them stronger. Be sure to read To the Wild Horizon before this novel to fully understand James and Grace’s relationship.

Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and of course the author Imogen Martin for the advanced copy of the book. The Mountains Between Us is out on February 18th. All opinions are my own.

The Mountains Between Us, is the follow up to The Wild Horizon by imaging Martin, it follows Grace and James Randolph, after James gets discharged from the army they go to visit Grace’s brother Zachary and his wife Maggie. This is where they learned there’s been gold found in California. James tells Grace he wants to go, and this is the first time she sees a glint of happiness in his eyes since his discharge and so she agrees. when they reach California they pan for gold and grass Valley and do quite well and a really happy but little does Grace know her happiness will be fleeting. The shadow that James carries will get darker and things are going to get much worse before they get better again. more than once, Grace will have to fall back on the grit and tenacity. She possesses not only to get her husband back but to stay sane in the process. This is an awesome book of found family loyalty, friendship, true love, and happily ever after. I really thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I am not going to lie when James was kidnapped I was so tired of bad things happening to him. I almost threw my phone across the room and stopped reading it, but I am so glad I did not this book was so good and although I did find there was a lot packed in this book and that the scenes went by fast. It still was such a great awesome read, with an even better ending.#NetGalley, #StormPublishing,#TheBlindReviewer, #ImogeneMartin, #TheMountainsBetweenUs, #TheWildHorizon,

Having trekked for months to get to her Brothers farm on the Oregon plains Grace and Randolph finally arrive. Reunited with both her brothers Grace is ready to make a go of life on the homestead but Randolph the disgraced Captain dismissed from the Army has other plans when he hears speak of the Gold rush to California.
Barren of children so far Grace goes along with her husband instead of staying behind and again on horseback the pair set off to their next challenge. Life gold mining is prosperous for the paid me having teamed up with another group to mine together but as winter sets Randolph decides to take Grace into San Francisco and another chapter begins. Buying a plot of land with their gold dust the pair start to build a life there with warehouses and their own home until disaster strikes.
Grace and Randolph are gradually drifting apart he won’t speak of his reason for leaving the army and makes all the decisions for the pair. Decisions that aren’t always the best!
Grace is a strong character who stands by her husband and works hard but will she get the American dream or will she ever make it back to her younger brother Tom on the homestead and have a family of her own?
Excellent read and very interesting storyline and characters . The Mountain Between us delves into themes like survival, isolation, and the complexities of relationships. It explores how characters cope with extreme situations and how those experiences shape their identities and connections with others

Imogen Martin delivers a beautiful story of courage, adventure, love, sorrow and initiative set during the California Gold Rush time period. You really feel the emotions accompanying times of progress and moments of extreme setbacks. There is such a strong sense of place which makes California come alive and the story even more compelling. And Grace. Wow. She is a one of a few characters that makes you proud to be a female. I read this book, not realising that it was the second book in a series. You couldn't tell, meaning you can easily read this one as a stand alone. I think fans of Kristin Hannah, Shelley Read and Amy Harmon will thoroughly enjoy this book.

Sometimes sequels can't compare to their predecessor, but this one was just as good - if not better than book #1 "To The Wild Horizon". We continue to follow married couple James and Grace Randolph, this time into the gold rush fever of 1849 California. A LOT happens in this book, none of which I was expecting - and that made it all the better! I truly enjoyed my time with this one and sort of wish there could be a third book in this series.

This sequel is wonderful! Martin does a great job of showing how the characters grew through the first book but also shows them still growing here.
I love Grace’s character. As a newlywed I relate to her internal battle between saving the day and having to step back and trust her husband.

What another amazing, riveting, brilliant read from Imogen Martin! A wealth of historical research has been mined and utilized extremely well in The Mountains Between Us. If you have not read To The Wild Horizon, I highly recommend you do as although the current novel can stand alone easily, the previous novel covers the initial meeting of this couple, James and Grace, and provides a wider picture of the challenges they endured and the accomplishments they achieved. The next instalment of their journey after marriage, provides a moving picture. Grace’s initial strength continues to blossom in the face of adversity in their continued story. She is determined to be with her husband wherever he goes. Her strength knows no bounds—for love is behind her every step. James, on the other hand, has changed due to war experiences. Reading both books provides the full arc of his career: his previous commanding heights as a Captain to his current downward spiral. But thankfully, this dip is momentary!

As mentioned, The Mountains Between Us focuses on the continued saga of James and Grace Randolph. It centres on their lives for two years during the California Gold rush (1848-1850). And oh my, what harrowing adventures this novel showcases. We are plunged into the hazards, pitfalls and disappointments connected to gold prospecting and the hard earned victories that are sometimes swept away in a blink of an eye! We see this couple endure some of the most horrendous experiences and separations imaginable: caused by fire, theft, imprisonment, slave labour, remoteness— just to name a few. We certainly get to see what these two are made of as they navigate a maze of memories, forge new paths and try to establish businesses during their new life in the west. There are plenty of surprises and twists on the road to success. A few failures, too, but overall these two are to be admired for their courage and tenacity. Reading this novel gave me a close up view of what it must have been like for US settlers in the mid 1800s who desperately tried to make a living in new unprotected territory.

The Mountains Between Us highlights Grace’s resilience, strength, skill, resourcefulness and devotion. She is a woman determined to succeed even when her husband is not quite there with her in spirit and form. She is most definitely the star of this novel. She clearly outshines her husband for a good portion of this story. But although he falls to the self-pitying pits of despair for a season after he is discharged from the army, he heads to California to start anew. He comes up with some good ideas that make finding gold less laborious and the couple have some happy moments in their wilderness haven. But peace doesn’t last long. Conflicts begin and with each downward swing of luck, James falls a little lower in confidence. Grace, though, manages to pull him back up eventually. But there are walls between them. He never wants to talk about his painful army days— until must endure a terrible fate. Then kickstarted by advice from a friend, he starts to open up to Grace (who harbours her own secret). It is not until they both share, that wonderful healing begins to happen.

I love this couple. They had their ups and downs but their love remains like a shining golden seam between them. James’ depression is more forgivable when we learn why. Grace is able to understand his emotional and physical pain when he reveals himself. So yes, this is a relationship story—one about enduring love. It also covers the history of California—when it became the 31st state in 1850. Part of it is about the pursuit of gold and how it changed many. Many travelled there seeking economic and social freedom and opportunity. The pursuit of gold, though, drew out thieves, fuelled envy and created some dangerous times. I don’t want to give anything away so I am dancing around the events but this novel is a wonderful tribute to this gold fever age.

The Mountains Between Us is a moving story. I truly felt I walked in Grace’s shoes and was transported to that wild landscape. I also felt James’s despair as the author gives us his perspective as well. The roller coaster emotions of these two characters affected my own. I definitely became deeply engrossed in the story, action and events that surrounded these two and their wonderful friends who add striking colour to the plot. This is a great cast of characters. And yes, some nasty villains that you truly wish would leave the scenes! And Grace’s skill with a gun had me in awe. I can picture this strong fearless woman from Imogen’s excellent descriptions. How her love for her husband fuelled her courage. She would go anywhere and do anything to save him.

This is without doubt my favourite novel I have read in the new year. It is so well written and grabbed my heart from the start and held me to the very end. I am happy that good things eventually happen for this couple. I closed the book satisfied, sighing and uplifted by the outcomes. A stunning masterpiece that is beautifully rendered! 5 glowing Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow! What a stormer of a read. I was riveted from start to finish by the twists and turns, the ups and downs that kept this novel pacy and exciting. I thank Netgalley and Storm Publishers for letting me read an advanced copy which I read over a three-day car journey.
It’s not simply an adventure story about the Wild West, pioneers, the Californian Gold Rush and the evil that greed brings out in people. There are many gritty themes: apart from romance and self-discovery, the issue of fecundity is sensitively tackled, as well as racial prejudice and female emancipation.
Our heroine, Grace, is a feisty young woman who knows how to handle a gun better than most men and I loved her. It was not easy to stand up for yourself in the 1800s in a man’s world but she and, in particular her two delightful French ladies “of a certain reputation” showed admirable strength and resolve throughout the story. I loved these women and the troubled Mei who is ‘adopted’ into the household by Grace. Their self-belief and desire to be emancipated made me punch the air several times. In fact, it is very much the women who shine in this book, over the at times truly shameful, bigoted and cruel behaviour of many of the male characters. (But not all).
James Randolph is a complex hero. Married to the lovely Grace, he has a shameful secret which is kept from the reader until we approach the end of the story. Grace doesn’t know what is wrong with him: “Something else had happened, but she didn’t know what.’ He has been discharged from the army and there is always a question mark about this hanging over the narrative. “The awful truth was that she could no longer be sure of her husband.” I liked this suspenseful complication and the many tense cliffhangers throughout the story.
Both characters are very much in love, but the separation through war in Mexico, has estranged them. They need to get to know and understand each other again. They want to but don’t know how. A dramatic event might help with this. No spoilers but that part of the story towards the end of the book is sooooooo thrilling.
Imogen Martin has obviously done much research into this period and she states in her author’s note she has always been fascinated by America. She immersed me through small but important details that painted the period: the supplies needed for the gold fields, the rags for women’s monthlies, the food and descriptions of the General Food Stores and her images of the basic living conditions in stunning but harsh landscapes. Research that is seamlessly woven into the writing.
This is a gritty tale of how man can descend to abject cruelty (as James remarks: “Was there no honour left in this land? No decency?”). But it’s also a tale of victory over the odds as our hero and heroine and their friends tackle the many adversities thrown before them. I loved it and am sure it will soar. Five stars from me.

The Mountains Between Us by Imogen Martin is an exhilarating journey through the chaos and promise of the California Gold Rush. Richly detailed and emotionally compelling, this novel grips you from the first page and doesn’t let go. Although the second book in The Wild Horizon series, it stands firmly on its own, offering a thrilling and poignant tale of survival, love, and resilience.

At the heart of the story is Grace Randolph, a fiercely determined woman whose journey is as physical as it is emotional. As she and her husband James leave behind their life in Oregon, lured by the prospects of gold and a fresh start, they soon find themselves entangled in a world far more ruthless than they had imagined. When James’s quest for fortune takes him down a dangerous path and he disappears, Grace is faced with an impossible choice—wait for news that may never come or brave the perilous mountains to save the man she loves.

Imogen Martin’s meticulous historical research shines throughout the novel. Every detail—from the treacherous Oregon Trail and the feverish gold panning to the lawlessness of San Francisco—is vividly brought to life. The novel does not shy away from the brutal realities of the era: the hardships, the injustice, and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of prosperity. These elements add a rich layer of authenticity that makes the story all the more immersive.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its portrayal of women. While the Gold Rush is often told through a male perspective, Martin ensures that the female experience takes center stage. Grace is joined by a remarkable cast of women, including Ling Mei, a Chinese laundress fighting for a better life, and Cora, a Frenchwoman with a haunting past. These women, underestimated by the men around them, band together to forge their own paths and prove their strength in a world that continually seeks to sideline them.

The pacing is masterful, with tension building steadily as Grace’s journey unfolds. The twists and turns keep the reader on edge, making the book difficult to put down. The relationships—whether romantic, platonic, or antagonistic—are layered and deeply engaging, adding further depth to an already captivating narrative.

If there is one minor critique, it is that the novel’s title and synopsis may lead readers to expect a singular focus on Grace’s physical journey to rescue James, when in reality, the book delves into much broader themes of love, trust, and self-discovery. However, this does not detract from the overall impact of the story.

The Mountains Between Us is a gripping tale of perseverance, adventure, and the unbreakable bonds of love and friendship. Fans of historical fiction, particularly those who appreciate strong, intelligent female leads and well-researched narratives, will find this novel an absolute treasure. Imogen Martin has crafted a remarkable and moving story that lingers long after the final page. Highly recommended!

REVIEW
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
💰👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏼
I read and loved the prequel, The Wild Horizon, to this book, and I was so excited when I saw this book! I quickly downloaded it and gobbled it up. This was a very good addition to the previous book and I liked it! It was unique and different, and I read it in two days while writing exams!
👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏼💰
The book started a couple of years after the end of the first book with Grace and James married, staying in Oregon with Grace's older brother. Then they decided to move to California so they could benefit from the gold rush. They didn't have much, and Randolph had quit his career army and refused to tell Grace what he went through in the Mexican war, so there's some strife between the married couple.
💰👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏼
Our MCs went through a lot in this book, and it shows the struggle of making a marriage work even if the couples love each other. Through the book, their relationship deteriorated, and they even separated because James left to go find work after their second business venture failed. Grace was left alone, and she built a hotel from the ground up with a little help from old and new friends alike.
👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏼💰
I liked like there were new facets to the characters, and there were new themes to explore, too. James' PTSD and lack of communication and Grace wanting a child and not knowing how to deal with the changes in her husband. I turned the pages easily so I could know what was next for Grace and James and how she saved him.
💰👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏼
At the end of the day, Grace, the woman, the wife saved her husband, and James himself opened himself to healing. They were able to move in with their lives and explore new ventures and meet even more amazing people. I liked that the author was able to include diverse characters ranging from Latinx, Chinese, Native Americans. It was nice. The only thing I could have added was that I wished her brothers had been in more scenes. I didn't really read much about them.
👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏼💰
I would definitely recommend this book. In addition to this, you don't need to have read the sequel before you read this. The author explained what happened in the previous book, and there was no confusion.

This book was very close to a five star read for me. It follows the story of husband and wife, James and Grace as they join the California Gold Rush, and the successes and loses that come with it. When James goes missing, Grace has reason to believe he has been kidnapped and sets off across the perilous mountains to find him.

The romance, and ultimately the marriage, between James and Grace is strained due to miscommunication, the inability to fall pregnant and James’s struggles with his time in the military and his subsequent discharge. It’s not until you finish the book that you realise the mountains between them were not just literal mountains, but many metaphorical ones as well.

It was so evident in the details and descriptions that the time in history in which the book is set, the geographical location and the way of life was researched meticulously. As a reader, you appreciate the time and effort the author has put in to making sure you feel almost transported back in time, walking alongside the characters, seeing, hearing and feeling as they do.

I love a strong, female main character and Grace certainly delivers. But she is not the only one, and I really enjoyed the stories of all the women in this book as they overcame adversities and prejudices.

The only thing I wanted more of from this book was depth in the two main characters, specifically depth in their love for each other. While there’s no denying Grace’s love for James when she sets off across the mountains to find him, the book starts off with the pair two years into their marriage so you don’t get an understanding of where such a powerful love and loyalty came from. It wasn’t until I finished the book that I discovered it is actually a sequel. While The Mountains Between Us can be read as a standalone, I would really encourage new readers to first read To The Wild Horizon. And I would also encourage the author and publisher to make it a little more clear on the cover of this book that it is a sequel.

But overall, a captivating story of a woman’s determination to bring her husband home, in more ways than one. Highly recommended and am off to read the first book to discover the origins of the story of James and Grace.

This novel can be read as a standalone however, I strongly recommend reading 'To The Wild Horizon' first, as it delves into the characters' backstories.

This expansive historical novel, appealing to admirers of Kristin Hannah, narrates the tale of a brave young woman and her spouse as they strive to endure the challenges of the California Gold Rush.

The narrative centers on Grace and James Randolph's expedition to California via The Oregon Trail, driven by the hope that the tales of gold are indeed accurate. The allure of financial stability and the excitement of adventure propel the couple forward, yet they are unprepared for the lawlessness and difficulties they must face while navigating their emotions as newlyweds.

I would not be truthful if I claimed that I did not anticipate this book to match the quality of the first, as it certainly met my expectations. I am selective with my five-star ratings, and both of these books undoubtedly deserve such recognition. Ms. Martin has emerged as one of my preferred authors her storytelling is exceptional, consistently drawing me in and making it difficult to put the book down.

The supporting characters were both well-developed and engaging. Grace is a courageous and resilient woman whom I greatly admire. Ling Mei, a Chinese immigrant, contributes her own sense of calm and wisdom to the narrative. Additionally, Cora, one of a pair of French sisters, reveals her own strength of character as the plot unfolds.

I earnestly anticipate the release of a third installment in this series however, I am entirely content with the current conclusion.

I highly recommend this book for those who appreciate historical fiction, authentic characters, and a captivating narrative that encompasses themes of love, strength, courage, and redemption.

I really enjoyed this book, it is well written, with well rounded, likeable characters, it is the first book that I have read by Imogen Martin so obviously I hadn't read the first one in the series, it would have been nice to know the early history of Grace and James but the story was easy to follow as a standalone.
James Randolph had been dishonourably discharged from his post as Captain in the US army for following his principles, he didn't know any other life so with wife Grace they packed up everything they owned and travelled the long journey to Oregon to be with Grace's brothers but James was no farmer and he soon became unsettled. When news reached them of the Californian gold rush, he packed up again and with a reluctant Grace, headed for California.
In the beginning things went well, they found a spot at the side of the river and James panned for gold, they worked as a team. James then decided that they should move to San Francisco where he had heard that they had a better chance of making their fortune, they teamed up with another family and James, his new friend George and his son Simon hit out leaving Grace, Lillian, Georges wife and the family behind.
This story follows the very highs and the very lows of gold prospecting, the danger, the greed but it also illustrates the strength of the women left behind.
Grace was a leader, she rallied the women including Lillian, Cora and Marguerite, two French courtesans who owed their lives to Grace and Ling Mei, a poor Chinese immigrant who Grace had befriended and given employment. They started building a successful business and when they heard that James and his friends were in dire trouble with a ruthless, well arms gang Grace didn't think twice about packing her fire arms and leading the rescue and with a well thought out plan the women set out.
This story is one that had me gripped from the beginning, the author has obviously done a lot of research and it shows.
Thank you Storm Publishing and Net Gallery for this ARC, this review is totally my own opinion.

This is my 1st book by Imogen Martin and I will definitely be reading the 1st book to this series, as well as her book.
"The Mountains Between Us" by Imogen Martin is set in the mid 1848 in Oregon and California during the Gold Rush Period and can be read as a stand alone although I do think I missed a bit of context to Grace and James Randolph's story..
It opens with Grace and James arriving in Oregon to the home of Grace's brother, already with undercurrents of struggle in their marriage with James's discharge from the army, uncertainty in where they would stay and Grace's delay in getting pregnant.
When James decides to go to California, after hearing about the Gold Rush, the authors historical research is clearly evident, I was drawn into the descriptions of the journey, with its challenging weather, terrain and details of panning for gold, as well as their relationship. The struggles, misfortunes, and suffering they have are offset by the love, devotion and friendships they make along the way. Grace is a strong female protagonist who is in equal parts devoted to her husband and yet innovative, hard working and intelligent. Her female friends are diverse and each an interesting characters that round out the story. As are their fellow miners. There is some violence appropriate with the time and events, some physical intimacy without being graphic and otherwise a clean read.
The twists and turns in the plot were realistic, engaging and kept me intrigued the entire time. If you enjoy well written historical fiction with an intelligent female lead, believable characters and suspenseful plot and satisfying end, I highly recommend this book!
A big note of appreciation to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC, it was a pleasure and privilege. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

I didn’t realize initially that this is a sequel to ‘To the Wild Horizon,’ but having also read that book it worked out well. While technically this could be read as a standalone, much would be missing from the characters’ stories for the reader.

Picking up a year or two after their journey west, ‘The Mountains Between Us’ opens with James and Grace Randolph at loose ends after James’ surprising discharge from the army. No longer Captain Randolph for reasons he will not disclose to Grace, he is left adrift and uncertain what path to take, a mental state that has a toll on his marriage as well as their living situation. While Grace would be content to stay near her family in Oregon and farm, James is clearly not the farming sort. His restlessness and desire to find his place have them heading south through the untamed, and often lawless, California hills. From the 1849 gold rush to San Francisco in its infancy, a lot happens for the Randolphs. And I mean a lot. That would be my one criticism of the book, that events moved along at such a rapid pace that it felt like about four story plots converged into one. But maybe this is a good reflection of the frenetic pace and insecurity of forging a life amid the challenges of the American frontier.

Enjoyable new characters and the return of friends from the trail add to the story’s appeal, and Grace and the other women prove to be tenacious forces to be reckoned with, both as business women and pulling off a daring rescue when the men are conscripted into forced labor in a mining camp. James’ behavior irritated me for much of the book I must admit, but things resolved towards the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Mountains Between Us
by Imogen Martin

This captivating novel is the second instalment in "The Wild Horizon" series, but it stands strong as a self-contained story. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction filled with rich, believable characters and compelling narratives of love, resilience, courage, and redemption. Imogen Martin’s writing shines brilliantly throughout.

Starting in the tumultuous year of 1848, the story follows the journey of Grace Randolph and her husband, James. They make the difficult decision to leave their Oregon home, along with Grace's family, in pursuit of a life that aligns more closely with her ex-military husband's adventurous spirit, which is ill-suited to the monotonous farming lifestyle. Their journey leads them to the chaotic and lawless environment of the California Gold Rush, where they encounter a blend of hope and hardship, and where old friendships are reignited amidst both heartache and triumph.

The plot is incredibly engaging, with numerous twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I was eager to discover what fate awaited each character. The narrative flows seamlessly at a steady pace, creating a well-structured and gripping reading experience. The book contains a variety of intriguing scenes, some featuring graphic violence—primarily among gold rush prospectors, as women were often excluded from the harsher realities of this era.

The diverse cast of characters adds depth to the story, featuring miners, entrepreneurs, and hopeful fortune-seekers, each bringing their unique backgrounds and motivations to the forefront. Together, they illuminate the myriad ways lives intertwined during this pivotal time in American history.

Of the three books in this series, The Mountains Between Us is definitely my favourite. Grace and James have now reached her brother Zachary in Oregon and for a while it seems they have reached their final destination and will settle there and build a new life. But news of opportunities in California now that gold has been discovered temps James to move on. If he can strike lucky, it could give them the chance of a far better life. It’s a case of be careful what you wish for as although their hard work brings success, failure is waiting in the wings to bring them down. And even though they are determined not to give up, again they suffer a knock back when James and his colleagues are kidnapped.
The Mountains Between Us is a story of courage and great resourcefulness on Grace’s part. She’s a brave and determined heroine, totally at home in the tough and dangerous environment of mid-1800s America. I enjoyed the read, which never flagged and kept me turning pages, eager to know what happened next. There is so much more I could mention, about the battles Grace faces, but that would spoil the story for potential readers. All I will say is it’s a totally entertaining read and I found it difficult to put down. If you haven’t read the other two in the series, it can, of course, be read as a standalone. However, I do recommend you read Grace and James’ journey from the beginning.
I would like to thank Storm Publishing, the author and Netgalley for an ARC of The Mountains Between Us in exchange for an honest review.

The Mountains Between us by Imogen Martin was an inside look at the hardships faced by people during the California gold rush. James and Grace Randolph set out to claim their part of the gold that was being discovered in California. Along the way, they face many hardships - a difficult journey, a fire that destroys everything they've worked for, and James' suffering from his time in the war. James and friends get captured by a gold magnate and are forced to work under deplorable conditions, forcing Grace and two other women to use their feminine prowess to free the men and bring them home.

I enjoyed this book. I thought there were places in the novel that drug out more than necessary. I thought the characters were likable, though I felt like most of them were not developed terribly well. The writing was much more about what the characters were doing (the actions) rather than describing the characters' thoughts and feelings. My two favorite characters were Cora and Ling Mei.

I think the jacket cover synopsis needs to be rewritten. It makes it sound like the biggest event in the book is the rescuing of the men, but that was only 2 chapters, 3 if you count the trip there and back. I don't think the summary accurately reflects what the book is about - the hardships of living in California during that time, the turmoil it put on families, and the responsibilities of women to step out of their traditional roles to support their families.

Overall, I'm glad I read the book. Many thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for an advanced copy.
