I read this book in quick time, then spent time trying to think of enough superlatives that would grab at you so you'll know what a fantastic book this is to read. I love reading the synopsis of the previous book to help remind me of all that happened previously, then it was down to now. And oh my goodness, hang on tight. Corvus Centauri is caught between two worlds - between his adoptive family and his birth family, the Orins. You can feel the tension with his brother, Gavren Centauri. And now he understands what happened to his family, having his Uncle Mangus Orin on the ship doesn't help. Since both families have lost to much, it is decided to go after the Lost Fleet of Admiral Abero Zane. You just know there are going to be conflicts. I never wanted to stop reading and now, I'm wanting the next book in this series to be out soonest. Thank you, Jasper T. Scott, for delivering yet another great read.
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. Star Empires: The Lost Fleet is a gorgeously, deep immersive written sequel bursting with personal turmoil and complex family dynamics that will have you wanting to finish it in a single sitting. Corvus Orion, he finds himself at a stark crossroads of finally being to begin the hunt to avenge the ruthless murders of his family that forced him and his sister onto a path never thought imaginable. But is he ready to accept the consequences once the decision is made? Discovering the immense and prominent Lost Fleet plunges Corvus and his crew into a mysterious star base that illuminates the stark reality of complicated histories of galactic hierarchies still shaping a shadowy, fluid future. It's also the haunting ground of hauntingly dangerous creatures that cannot be ignored... if you wish to survive.
Warning: You will HAVE to get the sequel to this one! I highly recommend you read the first of the series, first. The author does a very good job with the synopsis at the beginning, but you really get a feel for the characters in the first book. Following along with Corvus/Valin and his skycat, Meeka, as they try to find "The Lost Fleet" so he and his siblings can avenge the killing of their parents. Of course, nothing is easy, and strange, shadowy, mythical (or are they?) creatures called voidwraiths, try to kill them repeatedly. And they can't find a weapon that kills them! Not quite as "edge of your seat" as the first book, but quite believable, with well fleshed out characters and still gripping.
This story is a wonderful tale of brotherhood and of family division. One brother, Gavin is convinced the other is divided in his loyalties. Ciara, their sister, is the conciliatory glue that keeps them from killing each other. Corwin is torn between two families. Leona is the daughter of a dastardly man who wishes her to wed someone she doesn't want. This is also a tale of cyborgs, wraiths, new scientific discoveries, and the key to dominate the galaxy. The cyborgs are more heroic than you would think they would be. Xerxes and Kronos are some of my favorite characters. There are unexpected bad guys that seem to come out of the woodwork. There are lots of twists and turns to this story and I loved them all. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
The creativity and story arc starting with "Space Empires" (book one) is reflective, highly entertaining and well written. In book two ("Star Empires: The Lost Fleet"), the initial backdrop established in the first book flawlessly continues. This series is a roller-coaster ride (if you have long hair, it will hang upside down!). Characters you'll love and hate, and just find, despicable.
I'm weird: it reminds me of the tribal and monarchies of old in terms of marriage, expansionism, etc. Can't wait for book three!
I didn’t want to put this down which meant I had a couple of late nights as I forced myself to stay awake long than my eyes were wanting to. Some very interesting reveals in this book and the tensions and sub plots are thickening! Characters portray many facets of humanity and they have drawn me into this story full of betrayal, deceit and distrust combined with hope and integrity — depending on which characters are centre stage. Jasper Scott is an exciting and incisive storyteller.
Star Empires II: The Lost Fleet is exactly the type of book that film makers should use for action/adventure space operas! The characters are extremely likable (or not) with enough personal conflicts to keep the reader turning pages as quickly as possible. And, as if that’s not enough, the danger and battles give almost non-stop tension. I loved every second of it. I highly recommend it.
Disclaimer: I received this ARC from the author and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.
Even with space travel, there wasn’t a moment that you could relax. Corvus is a natural born leader and to his brother it seems he’s making all the wrong decisions, especially since Leona has forced her way into their group. Their family has been annihilated, they need to find the lost fleet to save themselves and their family especially since they’re fugitives on the run from Leona’s father Johran Solari. This is action packed from page 1.
Corvus is an interesting character, in a complex situation: divided loyalties between him and family (both families), the women he is dealing with and the fate of the Dominion. Throw in a handful of interstellar/interdimensional monsters, aliens, and treachery everywhere, and you have the makings for an incredible book.
Great recap from the first book and straight into it, keeping you on the edge of your seat all the way through. Meeka the sky cat is boss!! Lines being drawn and enemies coming out of the woodwork. Lots more to come in episode 3. I did get an ARC but it came out a couple of days later. Give us a chance Jasper 😏 Excellent stuff as always
What I love about Jasper T Scott's writing is that he gives a synopsis of the previous book/s in the series. By the time I get to read the second or third book I have often forgotten about the first or second one, so this is wonderful. When I read the synopsis I sometimes think - "Oh, that's right. That is what happened."
I am loving this current series and wait patiently for the next book.
Absolutely fantastic once again. Corvus finds out who betrayed his family but it comes with a price. Full of danger and secrets that will keep you intrigued.
