Adding this book to my 'Favourite Psychological Thriller Books' list cause this was one hell of a read!

I just finished reading 'The Year of Paper Boats' and I'm still thinking about the emotional journey it took me on. This book is amazing and it combines themes of staying strong, looking inside yourself, and the human experience in a way that's both scary and beautiful.

As I turned the pages, I found myself drawn into the strange world of Adrit and Kaivalya, two characters trapped in a small space where time and reality don't make sense. The author's descriptions and storytelling are so vivid that I felt like I was right there with the characters, feeling their fears, hopes, and desires. I loved how the author explored the main characters' pasts and how it affected their present. It was like a puzzle, and each piece fit together perfectly.

This book made me think deeply about my own life, my own struggles and successes. It made me realize that even in the toughest moments, there's always a little bit of hope. The characters' stories were so relatable, and I found myself thinking about my own experiences and emotions.

The character development of Adrit and Kaivalya was fantastic to read. I was very emotional after reading this book. The characters have haunting memories and the descriptions are so vivid that you will find yourself joining the characters.

This is a psychological thriller subtly haunting. The cover and the title made me pick up this book. It's a short yet haunting read. This book was a roller coaster for me, it started in a medium pace, then slow-fast-medium-fast. This book uncovers complex thoughts, feelings and traumas and dealt it sensitively.

Adrit and Kaivalya had a gradual character development and the way their bond developed was beautiful. And you will be kept in suspense till the climax to know how these two will fight together to come out of their situation. This is a really good read.

The book starts with the most tense setting ever - an exam room. That too final semesters. We've been there; it's horrible.
Only our protagonist, a dashing chick-magnet Adrit, begs to differ. Already having finished his paper, he uses the rest of the time to flirt with a pretty student, Meera & rile up his teacher, Miss Krishna, one last time, or so we thought.
She, on the other hand, is done putting up with the hassle her colleagues & her students dump her into. Getting an ace over her vilest student gives her satisfaction, and she is all set to embrace the next phase of her life: marriage, security & living the American dream.
Only, things turn out differently.
A normal call for a restroom unfolds into the biggest horror as her phone drops *there* & crashes, leaving her & unassuming Adrit locked in the washroom by a dream-struck janitor.
The college premises are to remain shut for three weeks!!

Amidst this absurd situation, they experience it all: hatred, 7 stages of grief, survival tactics, insanity, compassion, confession, passion even (welp), imaginary tales to build hope AND mostly, trying to stay alive with the meager means they've been abandoned with.
Until a dangerous search party arrives too late...

My Review:
I knew I'd love the book as soon as I read the adorable prologue, a happy family that painfully faded into uncertainty.
The events the two main characters faced speak of how complex our emotions & defences are, because of our own past experiences & traumas; without any qualms, how easy it is to put a blame to champion our own prejudices for emerging victorious, but at what cost?
My heart cries for both the characters, facing such absurd reality in quite a real situation (God forbid, it can happen to any of us💀), their struggles & feelings of despair.
The writing is moving & elegant yet raw at the same time.
But nothing could have prepared me for the painful ending.
The epilogue was like putting a bandaid to a bullet wound💔

My first attraction to this book was the title and the cover. The paper boat - it has so many childhood memories where we have made them with our loved ones, especially on rainy days. The feelings were as if I relived my childhood days.

Imagine you are locked up in a bathroom and there is no help or rescue. You are trying hard to get out of it when you realize you are not alone in that confined space. You have a company and that's more annoying than the situation already is.

The story revolves around Kaivalya and Adrit. A teacher and a student are stuck with each other in a strange situation. Though they tried hard to get out of it they couldn't find it anyway. While spending time in that strange situation they both came around their fears, regrets, psychological demons, and their past. Both have had a terrible time and are now dealing with those uncomfortable feelings. To pass the stuck-up time they came up with an imaginary game that gave them a humorous moment. But the main part is how are they going to come out of that bathroom??? What more do they have to encounter?? Will this situation guide them to better days coming ahead?? Or is it an added chapter to the list of regrets??

Jaykay Heart has always mesmerized me with his commendable writing style. He always comes up with fresh and unique plots that remain with you for a longer period. His writing is gripping and emotional. His plots are mystical and contain different versions of love. I have read all his books, and all are mind-blowing.

The story in this book explores a similar situation. It begins at a B-school during the final semester examinations. The main characters are Kaivalya, a calm and confident teacher in her late thirties, and Adrit, a flirtatious and handsome student. They absolutely loathe each other. However, due to an error of a dandy janitor, they find themselves locked inside a college that is supposed to remain closed for a month during the break.

This bizarre situation turns into a tale of survival. As time passes, they uncover each other’s fears and secrets. One is asthmatic, the other is nyctophobic. One is a cleanliness freak, the other is physically wounded. And above all, they must battle hunger. How they navigate these challenges forms the crux of the story. What binds them, despite their differences, is deep psychological pains.

With the magical assistance of origami, this psychological, adventurous survival story unfolds beautifully. The author masterfully portrays their journey, shifting between past wounds and present struggles. The transitions between time, place, and characters are seamless, making for an engaging read.

The year of Paperboats is a rollercoaster that starts off as a simple story. The author gives us the context behind the name of the book in the very beginning. Then we get introduced to 3 characters one by one, Adrit, Meera and Kaivalya. Since the protagonist was a girl, the readers will have to wonder which of the two girls is it. I liked the ambiguity in the beginning. However now diving into the story, I'll not use the names...but two of these characters get stuck in a washroom with no way out. Their inner demons are out as soon as they realise this but slowly they fade away as well making room for other emotions.

The author has narrated the story very skillfully via the two characters. We get to know about their backstory quite fast but their feelings and emotions are much more complex, which also lets the reader know that it's hard to understand a person even after they let you in their trauma cause the human nature of feeling things differently, that makes us unique also makes us complex, so only the people who want to know us would be able to understand us.

I really liked this book, it was short yet complex. This is the kind of book that would make you wonder about how a situation can affect us, both physically and mentally and sometimes it also changes our perception of people whom we think we know, it also makes us look into ourselves.

That is what happens in this book when a teacher and her student get locked in the female restroom and what happens after that is enough to change their lives in a positive way.

This story is based on the subconscious mind, human psychology, reality and imagination.

The first few chapters of the book were a little slow and after that the book picked up pace and became more and more interesting.

There are two main characters who drive the story forward. These characters are well developed and have many layers to them which get revealed throughout the course of the story.

The story has suspense, thrill, emotions, mystery and a kind of awakening or realization.

The story will give you goosebumps and make you question many things.

This is the second novel of the author and it is a very good effort from the author.

The cover page and title of the book are apt.

The language used is both simple and complex, so it can be read by beginners as well.

Overall it was something new for me to read, so I would recommend this book to those who like to read something new and different.

Both have come to hate each to the point they can't stand each other but fate as some other plans as they are stuck in an unlikely situation where both are the only allies for each other. Will both be able to work together?

The story is an engrossing drama that unfolds in a unique manner. As they are confined together, both characters begin to discover the hidden side of each other and also the hidden side of their own personality. As the secrets of the past and hidden secrets begin to tumble, they begin to discover the answers they have been seeking.

The writing is excellent, often dipping into the past, to slowly unveil the hidden layers to the story. The characters are well developed, both Adrit and Kaivalya reveal the hidden facets to their story, from their past. It's so easy to get drawn into the story that you begin to connect with them and their fears, hopes and insecurities. The ending is unexpected but satisfying.

Overall, The Year of Paper Boats is an enjoyable read taking you an emotional voyage, one you wish never ends.

In that brief moment, Kaivalya felt too many emotions. Being stranded in the ladies' restroom with a student she couldn't stand for a minute felt like the worst day of her life. The situation worsened with each passing minute as there was no hope and just negativity. An emotionally charged book that honourably touches on life's challenges. The book is presented flawlessly and expertly, allowing the reader to experience the experiences that made it a worthwhile read. I adored the book because of how vivid and well-written it was.

Adrit was correct. She didn't have many individuals who truly cared for her. Over time, being surrounded by pessimistic thoughts turned every moment into a mission. You will become numb and mute at regular periods after reading an emotionally charged book. She's worried about Adrit's reaction and whether his evil side would make her life even more chaotic and terrifying. A book that will undoubtedly captivate readers while leaving them with no semblance of hope. A straightforward but morally upright reading experience that will transport you to a new world.

A finely crafted psychological thriller that leaves an indebile impact on the readers. That's what I felt about this book. Paper boats symbolise the fragile and flimsy hope that Kavailya holds. The inquisitive narration of the opening chapter shows us how her complex inner persona progresses the story. Adrit, a carefree and flamboyant young man gets entangled with her in an unforeseen circumstance. They both becomes merely the pawns in the hands of fate. Shrouded in the veil of mystery it navigates us to their bare persona.

Claustrophobia has been a subject to many movies. But this was my first time reading it in a novel. It was more intense and emotionally overwhelming. We feel the pulse of the characters as they find solace in each other's company, despite the initial resentment. Several layers added to the story shows us the inner turmoil both characters undergo. I totally appreciate the intricate attention paid to the feelings. The eloquent language used makes it more engrossing and rich.

The book was well-paced and has a certain rhythm to the story lines. Skillful writing, realistic as well as unique characters (especially the hero), and a plot full of twists and turns .. I was Pleasantly surprised by the ending it was realistic. The engaging part was the way the story moved back and forth still managing to be on the streamline. A very difficult situation, of a student and teacher getting stuck on the restroom. The fear, the Awkwardness, the hunger, the uncertainties and helplessness can be felt by the readers too. Moving ahead - after several attempts of banging the door for help to sharing and recalling the most sensitive experiences of their lives a strange bond was formed between them. The horrifying touches to being left lonely shook me . Again the trials started for help to a sudden twist and gunshots. Its a tale of Kaivalya and Adrit’s struggle to get free. The story has many heart touching and sensitive moments that moved me. It's a well written story.
