I think it says a lot about the person you work for, if you can honestly say that they are a great leader, not just a great manager. In fact, those people are probably far and few inbetween. Some would argue that there is no difference between a leader or manager, they are one in the same. But that is not true as those who have worked for bad managers can attest. It's not a place that inspires you to want to come to work, much less willingly to go above and beyond when asked by that manager. In fact, most people don't quit their jobs, they quit their managers. So how do you know if you are a great leader or simply a manager?

You might want to check out John C. Maxwell's simple book Jump Start Your Leadership. In it, he provides you with 90-days to improve your leadership. It defines what makes a great leader, how others will perceive your leadership, along with great quotes from exceptional leaders of the day like Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, and more. Along with a simple short and concise paragraph or two, there is a section that implores you to see how you can incorporate that principle into your life or asks how would it benefit you if you did. It truly is something when you can look back and remember those exceptional managers and leaders you might have worked with. They made a mark on your life in some profound way.

They may have encouraged you, motivated you, inspired you, and most importantly role modeled what a great leader looks like, by willing to stand by your side and accomplish difficult tasks. One great quote is from Harold S. Green, "Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions." The page then details what this passage means. "Perhaps you are not naturally gifted at working with people. In fact, you may struggle with liking some people enough to commit the energy needed to make good connections with them. If you have difficulty with this, do the following: Make a choice to care about others. Liking people and caring about people is a choice within your control. If you haven't already, make that choice. Look for something likeable about every person you meet. It's there. Make it your job to find it and then express what you like about that person, especially your team members.

The section then finishes with a final though for you to consider. Make a list of all your team members and write down the qualities you admire in each of them. How do those qualities make each of them valuable to the team?" (pg 70). This is where you would jot down your thoughts and hopefully incorporate that particular lesson into making you one of those memorable leaders we would all love to work for. This isn't just a feel good book for leaders but helps those who might be struggling to know where they might be falling short. It highlights both the positive and negative aspects and helps you to become a better leader.

I received Jump Start Your Leadership by John C. Maxwell compliments of Faith Words, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are my own unless otherwise notated. I think this is a must read for anyone in a management position or even a great resource for husbands who are called into a leadership role in their own homes, marriages and families! I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars!

Jumpstart Your Leadership, published by Center Street, is content from John Maxwell's previously published book, The 5 Levels of Leadership. Set up as a 90 day plan, you can obviously stretch it out for the entire time or use it as a fairly quick read. Each segment begins with a quote on leadership from well known leaders, along with a lesson to be learned from that quote. The opposite page then asks a question about your own leadership, team members, or your actions/reactions to things and what you would have done differently. There is then room for you to jot down your answers. This is an excellent way to help you to really think about and analyze your answer rather than glossing over it. Plus, it makes it rather like a diary to reflect upon when you come to a point of needing to re-evaluate yourself and your goals in the future. Whether you are a leader of a company, a ministry, a family, or a person others look up to for any reason, this book can make you more effective and wiser.

I received a copy of this book at no cost from Hatchette Book Group. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.

In JumpStart Your Leadership, John C. Maxwell explored the key principles it takes to be an effective leader. Maxwell discussed the importance of discovering your strengths and weaknesses, your ethics and values, learning about your team members and knowing what they want for the future, complimenting your co-workers, and much more. This book is a 90 day devotional and each day contains a quote from a leader, thoughts of the day from John C. Maxwell, discussion questions, and a section where readers can answer the questions.

One of my favorite days was, “Day 69” because John C. Maxwell shared the secrets to hiring a dramatic team. He suggested that we are most effective in our strength area. He encouraged leaders to let their team work 80% in their strength area, 15% in learning, and 5% outside their comfort zone. I truly believe if hiring managers would actually do this during their hiring process, we could see a change in how successful and productive their business is. Another day, I enjoyed was, “Day 27” because John C. Maxwell revealed about he struggled with trying to please everyone and make his team happy at all times. He eventually realized that it’s impossible and it was hurting his leadership ability.

I would recommend this amazing book to every single business leader and people who are striving to become a leader someday. This book will teach readers the tools they will need to run an effective and productive team. In reading this book, I can see that John C. Maxwell has been in business for a number of years and he has seen firsthand what has works for the overall success of the business and what has harmed and hurt the business. I liked how the book contained questions for each day where readers could apply the new knowledge to their lives and it also had a blank page included where it is easy to take notes. If you’re looking a book to guide you into becoming a better leader, then read this book!

JumpStart your Leadership is a book filled with short paragraphs and thought provoking questions. It is more of a workbook/questionnaire rather than a book. Most of the questions in this nugget are insightful and sport for reflection.

One of the topics that has irked me about Maxwell's writing is that he can sometimes come off as a bit pompous. This book has none of that tone here. I was impressed that Maxwell was comfortable confessing some of his failings as a leader. This made the book more down to earth for me.

I think this book is excellent for leaders that work with a team where there are set deadlines and some structure to an organization. I cannot award it five stars because I feel like there are better books out there that are more applicable to the education industry. I think this book targets corporations and churches, but does not seem to mention the education field. Thus stated, some of the suggestions in this short read are applicable to education, but not all. I picked this book up expecting it to jumpstart my leadership in all areas of my life. I think more of this is applicable to the personal leadership I do, rather than the professional leadership I plan to do in the future years of my career.

With all of that written above, I will be referencing this (work) book again in the future once the time is ripe.

My favorite book by John C. Maxwell is definitely 21 Irrefutable Laws of a Leader.
I've also read and LOVE "Management Methods of Jesus"

Interactive journals and devotionals are not a thing of the past.
JumpStart Your Leadership offers life applicable reflective points to help guide the leader into developing a service oriented leadership style.
For previous John C. Maxwell readers this book serves as a "conversational" refresher.

Launching my marketing company and serving in different leadership capacities
the principles in the book were great refreshers.
I'd recommend this book for those who need and thrive on
daily motivation, self reflection and have embraced the truth that
"Readers are Leaders."

Recommended for reflective leadership.
3.5 out of five stars.

READ DEC 2018

This is one of the "Jump Start" series of books by Maxwell, focused on a 90-day improvement plan. Like the others in the series, this is a recommended resource for anyone wanting something they can use daily to focus their development. The format is a short reading followed by a focused reflection/action plan piece.

This was a super quick and easy read with a lot of good pointers. It's intended to be used as a 90 day daily guide toward better leadership skills. I read it all in one night but highlighted many things that I will come back to and focus on later.

This is a good reminder of key leadership principles. Although I read it in a few days, I can see the value of taking it one chapter at a time as part of a daily mindfulness practice as a leader. I will definitely pick this up to read again.

Really practical

It makes you reflect with important questions. And gives you little context.
The title is just right. It helps you jumpstart your growth
