I don’t know
The premise, cover, title, and author of this book drew me in. I really wanted love this cozy story about swimming and self discovery but it really just wasn’t it. There was barely any swimming and it was more about being in Orkney? Just feels like the title/bio is misleading. Also the entire story was predictable and the jumping back/forth of the timeline felt poorly structured. Wasn’t a hit for me 😶

This wonderfully executed book covered a multitude of time lines, from as early as the 1960s to now, 2024; I really enjoyed how very up to date with the latest time period being 2024, as the book was only published this year. It’s refreshing to read something so new and up to date, it almost made me feel like I was with the characters.
The book also covered various POVs of many characters quickly grew to know and love. It was filled with wholesome characters and a few that were the very opposite…
Furthermore, I am particularly fond books set in Scotland as I spent many childhood holidays there; it brings back lots of good memories.
After a young marriage, Cara and Duncan were desperate to create a family together however after endless devastating miscarriages by the age of 32, they were both disappointed by the lack of a full-term baby. Duncan feared that Cara would be broken beyond repair.
From the very beginning, it was obvious that Evie (their future daughter) had a secret. A secret about why she left her home in the Orkney Islands for in London, as quickly as she did. Despite how hard they tried, nobody could get Evie to open up but why she left her Home and her family to work in a ghastly hotel. Cut herself off from the past and buried the very essence of who she was.
Evie only had one person she had contact with was an old friend, Freya. Evie made Freya promise not to tell anybody where she was just that she needed to be by herself. She felt she had a ‘dirty little secret’ and she knew that she could never return home. However that all changed with a phone call about her dying father…suddenly it was time to get the first flight home and face the past…
Freya took Evie under her wing once again and helped her to keep a promise she had made to her father - to get back in the water and swim…gradually step by step Freya helped her to overcome the fears of the past and not only got her to watch them having a great time but eventually, once she was ready, Evie learned to love the water again and experienced it’s wonderful healing powers.
Evie, not only has to battle through her trauma but she also has to battle a vicious sister that has always wanted war against her. Evie took deep breath fresh salted air and once again tried her best to do what was right. That’s all she ever wanted. Over time, her secrets from the past are revealed. Many people were hurt by the outcome. However Evie found that love lasts, it endures, it’s passed down. It lives in the hearts of the people who remember us.
This uplifting read reminds us how having supportive people around you can help you to channel some of their enduring strength encourage in order to leave the past behind and plunge into the future.

As someone who is a cold water swimmer with a trip to Orkney planned for later in the year I was soooo excited when I saw the publicity for this book. The Island Swimmer all about Evie and the selkies, a local swimming group.
Totally misleading!!! How someone thought The Island Swimmer was an appropriate title for this book is beyond me. It is nothing about swimming. Although if I were cynical I could say in terms of marketing it is a clever way of attracting the swimming community…..
The story itself is, in my opinion, full of cultural tick marks - Alzheimer’s tick, trans character tick, coercive control tick - you get the drift.
As for the writing, very simple with many a cliche.
The storyline - predictable and trite.
The one star is for the artwork in the dust jacket of the hardback.

This is a terrible book, which I only bothered finishing because it was a gift. It's poorly written with a flimsy plot and scarcely believable characters. And swimming barely features. The MC can't swim, so the title is wholly misleading. The word 'peedie' is so horrendously overused it made me want to scream.
I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I'd also hate anyone to waste their precious time and money on this utter dross.

The title of this book is deceiving. This book is more about Evie. She has a hateful elder sister who was full of jealousy towards her. After a traumatic childhood event we see Evie leave the family home in Orkney as a teenager and all ties were cut.
20 years later upon hearing her Dad is desperately ill via the only friend she kept in touch with, she makes her way home also preparing to face the consequences of her actions. There is a terrible secret which she desperately wants to keep, but how long will it be before it comes out?
Evie is too late to see her Dad and ends up with the house in his will. Her nightmare of a sister has threatened to reveal all unless she gives up the home. Evie has been living with the secret and beating herself up for years by living a shell of a life and not recognising her worth, in her mind that is her punishment
Well, Evie has always been afraid of the water and one of her father’s wishes was for her to learn to swim. This is only touched on at the end of the book as it centres about the drama in her family. With the help of her friends she is about to find out that all was not as it seemed on that day she left the beautiful island of Orkney all those years ago….

The gorgeous Orkney setting steals the spotlight in this book. I learnt so much about the natural beauty, history and folklore of the place. The Island location also serves as the perfect backdrop to a close knit community who are there to support and encourage their neighbours and friends. With of course some inevitable exceptions to create a little drama.
20 years ago Evie fled home and her reasons for this are shrouded in secrecy, lies and manipulation. Now she’s finally home, and ready to face the past, and redesign her future. I enjoyed her journey, and discovering why she left home and her beloved father so abruptly.
The cold water swimming was another aspect I appreciated, it really added a lovely sensory element. And tied in well with Evie's story arc of facing your challenges with your friends firmly by your side.
For me personally, I found the pace a little slow. I think partially as this feels like it will be the first book in a series, and the author is setting the scene, and introducing us to the various Island characters. I will definite read on if there are more books, to see what is in store for them.
I'd recommend this to you if you like Island settings, cosy feel-good reads, and a supportive cast of characters.

Writing style was furiously naive at points and the characters were a little 2D, yet on a superficial level I enjoyed this book and got into the plot. Just not any sort of masterpiece.

Werkelijk prachtig!
Wat een leuk en bizar verhaal. Die zus… ik heb er geen woorden voor….
Het boek leest vlot weg en geeft een fijne sfeer ondanks de gebeurtenissen.
Er zit ook een geheim in het verhaal verweven die aan het einde aan het ligt komt. Dat geeft ook een soort spanningselement.
Freya vond ik een sterk personage (transvrouw). Ze gaf een mooie leidraad binnen het verhaal.
Een aanrader dus!
En even, die cover!, die geeft helemaal de vibes die ik voelde in het boek en ook helemaal een lente gevoel.

What a disappointment. This book is far fetched and full of stereotypes, and the writing is quite naive. The whole premise of the story is why Evie disappeared from Orkney so suddenly...and the book labours on not quite telling us for far too long. And once finally revealed, it seems totally implausible. I feel the author was also ticking off a list of issues to cover... transgender, coercive abuse, drink and drugs and mental health problems. I don't enjoy leaving such a negative review, but in my opinion it's a book that has only been published because of the author's celebrity status.

A solid debut from Kelly, this book explores family over the decades and a secret that has pushed Evie away from her home on Orkney. I enjoyed how the plot moved from Evie’s parents, to her childhood, to present day – all non-linear – but found the last one hundred pages to be a bit lack-lustre.

Boek heet ‘the island swimmer’, hoofdpersonage kan niet zwemmen :/. Ik heb behoorlijk gemixte gedachtes over dit verhaal. Het had zeker wel sterke en mooie punten, terugkeren naar je ‘jeugd’ om het zo maar te zeggen en daarbij jezelf herontdekken. Maar oh wat heb ik mij geërgerd aan de personages. Er is van alles gebeurd, de een kan niks en niemand vergeven, en bij de ander is het ‘sorry zand erover?’ en dan is het rozengeur en maneschijn :| De sfeer van het boek, met name de setting van de Orkney Islands trok mij aan, maar heeft me door het verhaal en de personages niet weten te pakken.

Great characters, it’s not just Evie. You keep wondering what made her leave the island, so you keep reading. Unfortunately after the secret is out, the story collapses and feels too long, even though the story of the two characters that are in the lead in the end is a happy one.

Leest heerlijk weg, korte hoofdstukken en meerdere tijdlijnen met een mysterie pakken me altijd.
Aan het einde te veel sideplots van side characters die ze mooi af wilde ronden waardoor het boek net ietsje te lang was voor mij. Meer focus op Evie en haar verhaal zou het sterker maken.

OMG, had this book on my “to read list” for months, decided to give it a read, well It had me gripped from the first pages. It sucks you in, and fell for all the characters, and their own feelings, made you want to read more.

An enjoyable debut read from Lorraine Kelly, with Orkney surely a character in its own right - it's clear that Lorraine knows the islands, with many familiar places - and some artistic licence.

One of those "it's so terrible you have to keep reading" books. Kelly thanks two editors but there's no evidence that a decent editor came anywhere near this book. It reads like an exercise in box-ticking social issues but none of them are tackled more than superficially. The dialogue uses contractions when the "long version" would be better for emphasis but more importantly doesn't use them when they should be used so all the conversations are stilted.

Tijdens het lezen van de flaptekst van dit boek, werd ik direct enorm enthousiast. Dit lijkt me echt een geweldig, mooi, grappig en hartverwarmend boek. Het is het eerste boek van Lorraine Kelly dat ik ga lezen, maar ik heb dus door de flaptekst hoge verwachtingen. De cover spreekt me qua kleurkeuze erg aan, de illustratie zelf vind ik persoonlijk wat minder uitnodigend.
Als Evie het bericht krijgt dat haar vader ernstig ziek is, keert ze na lange tijd terug naar haar ouderlijk huis op Orkney. Het eiland verliet ze in haar tienerjaren met het voornemen om nooit meer terug te keren. Bij aankomst blijkt al snel dat niet iedereen op haar terugkomst zit te wachten. Met name haar zus Liv niet, die haar liever weer gisteren dan vandaag ziet vertrekken. Evie besluit haar vaders huis op te ruimen voor de verkoop en heeft plannen om weer zo snel mogelijk te vertrekken. In de tussentijd sluit Evie zich aan bij een groep openwaterzwemmers, onder leiding van haar oud-vriendin Freya. Samen helpen ze Evie de fouten uit haar verleden onder ogen te komen en de weggestopte, pijnlijke waarheden te onthullen die Orkney zullen schokken.
Wat een mooi, hartverwarmend en meeslepend verhaal dat erg fijn en vlot is geschreven. Lorraine Kelly weet enorm veel sfeer, emotie en gevoel in het verhaal te werken dat ze op de juiste momenten door middel van humor luchtig weet te houden. Daarbij weet ze de personages met finesse uit te werken waardoor je echt met hen meeleeft. Zeker het hoofdpersonage Evie, sluit je snel in je hart. Daarbij kent het verhaal ook een prachtige diepgang, waardoor de gebeurtenissen echt bij je binnenkomen.
We lezen het verhaal van Evie, een liefdevol, integer en introvert personage, waarbij al snel blijkt dat ze een rugzakje van een heftig en geheim verleden met zich meedraagt. Evie is realistisch en erg goed uitgewerkt en naarmate het verhaal vordert en Evie en haar geheimen worden uitgediept, krijg je des te meer bewondering voor dit mooie personage. Naast Evie, zijn ook de andere personages divers en goed uitgewerkt. Lorraine Kelly weet hierbij ook personages neer te zetten die kampen met psychische problemen en verslavingen.
Voordat het verhaal begint, krijgen we een vluchtige blik van het huidige leven van Evie, voordat ze terugkeert naar Orkney. Vanuit daaruit ontvouwt zich een heftig, verrassend en meeslepend verhaal. Waarom deze score: Dit boek heeft me diep geraakt met zijn prachtige thema’s over familie, vriendschap en vergiffenis. De personages voelen levensecht aan, en de afwisseling van tijdlijnen houdt het verhaal meeslepend.
Samenvatting:
De Eilandzwemmer volgt drie tijdlijnen die op een meesterlijke manier met elkaar verweven worden.
2024 (heden): Evie keert terug naar haar geboortestad omdat haar vader ernstig ziek is. Dit zet haar leven volledig op zijn kop.
2004: Een ingrijpende gebeurtenis heeft Evie destijds gedwongen om het eiland voorgoed te verlaten.
1960: We volgen de ouders van Evie – hoe ze elkaar ontmoetten en hun leven samen opbouwden.
Deze verschillende verhaallijnen onthullen beetje bij beetje wat er in het verleden is gebeurd. Freya, een bijzondere en warme vrouw, is een verbindende factor tussen de personages.
Schrijfstijl:
Lorraine Kelly schrijft toegankelijk en meeslepend. De afwisseling van tijdlijnen is perfect uitgevoerd: het houdt je nieuwsgierig en zorgt ervoor dat het verhaal vlot blijft lezen. De sfeer en emoties worden prachtig overgebracht zonder overdreven dramatisch te worden.
Verhaallijn:
De opbouw is zorgvuldig en goed doordacht. De onthullingen worden langzaam prijsgegeven, waardoor je als lezer steeds verder in het verhaal gezogen wordt. De pacing is uitstekend – doordat je steeds wisselt tussen de tijdlijnen, blijft het boeiend zonder traag aan te voelen.
Karakterontwikkeling:
De personages voelen realistisch en gelaagd aan. Evie’s innerlijke worstelingen en groei worden op een natuurlijke manier beschreven, waardoor je echt met haar meeleeft. Freya is een bijzonder personage: ze is sterk, liefdevol en een constante factor in alle tijdlijnen. Haar rol in het verhaal is niet geforceerd of overdreven belicht, maar juist mooi verweven in de dynamiek tussen de personages.
Thema’s en boodschap
Het boek raakt thema’s als familie, vriendschap, angsten overwinnen, vergeving en liefde. Het zet je aan het denken over wat een ‘perfect’ gezin eigenlijk is en hoe dat voor iedereen anders kan voelen.
Emotionele impact
Dit boek wist me meerdere keren te raken. De manier waarop het de emoties van de personages overbrengt, voelde oprecht en herkenbaar. Sommige scènes lieten me zelfs een traan wegpinken. Het einde was ontroerend en had een fijne afsluiting, al wordt er wel een opening gelaten voor een mogelijk vervolg.

De Eilandzwemmer volgt drie tijdlijnen die op een meesterlijke manier met elkaar verweven worden.
2024 (heden): Evie keert terug naar haar geboortestad omdat haar vader ernstig ziek is. Dit zet haar leven volledig op zijn kop.
2004: Een ingrijpende gebeurtenis heeft Evie destijds gedwongen om het eiland voorgoed te verlaten.
1960: We volgen de ouders van Evie – hoe ze elkaar ontmoetten en hun leven samen opbouwden.
Deze verschillende verhaallijnen onthullen beetje bij beetje wat er in het verleden is gebeurd. Freya, een bijzondere en warme vrouw, is een verbindende factor tussen de personages.
Schrijfstijl:
Lorraine Kelly schrijft toegankelijk en meeslepend. De afwisseling van tijdlijnen is perfect uitgevoerd: het houdt je nieuwsgierig en zorgt ervoor dat het verhaal vlot blijft lezen. De sfeer en emoties worden prachtig overgebracht zonder overdreven dramatisch te worden.

Haar rol in het verhaal is niet geforceerd of overdreven belicht, maar juist mooi verweven in de dynamiek tussen de personages.

Thank you so much Lorraine Kelly for letting me dive into the world of ‘The island Swimmer’.
Escaping to the windswept shores of Orkney, where secrets simmer beneath the waves and family bonds are… well not exactly great, has been such a joy and I can’t believe that this is Lorraine Kelly’s first book as her words read so beautifully and perfectly crafted that Evie and her world came to life for me.
It's a feel-good, heartwarming story about facing your past, finding yourself, and the healing power of community and nature.
Estranged from her family and haunted by a mysterious past teenie completely stole my heart and was super easy to root for. I was heartbroken to see her kindness and her desperation to do the right thing be seen as a weakness to be exploited by her sister and the vile Jeremy.
The narrative jumps between different points in time, adding intrigue and gradually revealing the truth about the past. The undercurrent of pain ran through the whole book and even though we don’t know the cause of this pain until fairly late in the story we can feel Evie and her families deepest pain, confusion and emptiness.
The supporting characters were so perfectly formed and well developed you will come away from this book feeling that you know the entire family as though they are your friends. From the mother trying to forever match her own unrealistic image of what the perfect wife, mother and family should be to the father trying to be understand the ones he loves and the eldest daughter who feels misunderstood and angry at a world that she rages against. Not to mention the glorious Freya and the beautiful romance subplots (no spoilers here of who our happy couples will be)
Please note that the book deals with some sensitive topics like cancer, coercive control, and discrimination.
It was so inspiring to watch Evie’s journey as she confronts her past and embraces the woman she was always destined to be.
Overall, "The Island Swimmer" is a heartwarming and enjoyable read with well-developed characters, a beautiful setting, an intriguing plot and will be recomending to everyone I know!

it was alright, i was pretty hooked in the beginning with the introduction of this looming plot twist and big secret to be revealed but chapter after chapter it started to become cliché, like fanfiction written by a 13 y/o type of cliché, so bad it gen made me angry. my gripes include : the trans and black and cancer and asthma +++ representation felt attention-grabby, undeveloped and not done well; 90% of the characters are involved in some form of romance, unrealistic and too wattpad, love ≠ resolution; the characterisation of her family is ass and unbelivably written, the parents needed a divorce 20 chapters ago; the fact that everyone was upset at evie and not that maniacal lying asshole of a sister she has???; the fact that evie just sort of moves on from the web of lies her sister created; the fact that evie is stupid, gullible, and self-pitying for half the book; the fact that present-day evie swims just once* in this book that is called the island swimmer???? honestly this should be 1 star but i did get to do a funny scottish accent in my head while reading the dialogue and also really loved the focus on the scottish islands, kinda a must to visit now!

I didn't enjoy this book. I loved the idea about a story set on Orkney and a love letter to the islands but that isn't what the book is. the swimming plot line which titled the book was in two scenes. I thought the plot was predictable and didn't empathise with the characters which leant into stereotypes . I find it impossible to believe you would leave your life for twenty years and form one friendship. perhaps ten years but the character was set to be nearly forty and behaved as though she was in her early twenties. and a younger age of the main character might if explained more of her decisions and motivations.
the medical aspects of this book were not researched and did not account for professionalism or ethical issues.
I would love to read more about Orkney and you can tell the author loves and has lived there but it wasn't enough to make it an enjoyable read.
