Buried Beneath the Light

Rate this book
We’re all just monsters wearing different skins.

Devastated by the monstrous attacks in Rioa, Eira, Nyx, and their soul-bonded friends scramble to heal the newly traumatized souls and discover the source of the attacks. The plague of darkness has unleashed new horrors on Majikaero, and the only way the shattered group of souls will find the answers they seek is if they can shine light on their darkest secrets and remove the masks they hide behind.

Meanwhile, on Earth, the last of Eira’s dearest friends fight for their lives as they navigate a post-apocalyptic nightmare. The remaining people of Earth have sheltered underground and formed new societies—some more corrupt and evil than others. After two years of horrific abuse in an underground cult, Astira and Liv escape and reunite with Jace. But the years of trauma have altered the very essence of these friends, and not all is as it seems in their new underground haven. Plagued by strange dreams and skeptical of the leadership in their city, Astira and Liv struggle to begin their healing journeys.

Buried Beneath the Light is book two in the Soul Bound Realms series, a thrilling fantasy romance that begs the how much healing can one soul sacrifice before they’re buried beneath the light?

✨Buried Beneath the Light✨

It’s finally happened. My mind has exploded. What a wild ride this book has been! So full of intrigue, mystery, and secrets! Book 2 by Carliann and this one is even more of a rollercoaster. A master at multi POVs and how she manages the lore and realms, I will never know!

In this sequel to The Light Within, we begin right where we left off- however, time is all perspective in Majikaero. Earth is four years in the future and once again devastated by cruelty, warfare, and hatred. Living underground in a cult is the norm. Meanwhile, in Majikaero, little time has passed but that doesn’t mean nothing has happened. Oh no, quite the contrary!

There are many POVs and connections in BBTL. Soul bonds are popping up and tickling our brains, wondering which ones will manifest or not. It seems like we may be leaning towards a “why choose” storyline versus our initial singular fated mates with our MCs. Multiple romances. Increased knowledge and exploration of elemental powers, redemption arcs, and so many plot twists. Secrets and questions abound and, even with the high stakes and legit crazy ending, we are still left hanging desperately on every word Carli gives us to put these pieces together.

I felt like this story took a different turn than book one, which I loved, but struggled to keep up with everything going on in this installment. It was much darker with lots of trigger warnings, so please read those!

Tropes you may find in BBTL are multi 1st person POV, multi realms including a post apocalyptic earth, soul connections, mental health/trauma rep, medium spice, big triggers- Carli moves through those with comfort and hope with a gentle hand but they are vivid, monsters, shadow daddy, strong FMCs, and epic world building.

Thank you so much for this gifted arc, Carli and Haylingbookstorm!

If Carliann Jean's The Light Within, Book 1 in her Soul Bound Realms series, was a story about finding your inner light despite the darkness, Buried Beneath The Light, Book 2, was a tale about accepting your own darkness and inner demons. For aren't we all monsters, just in different forms?

Carliann is a master at writing multiple POVs, and she has proved that in this book. We follow different POVs, offering us deep and complex views of one's soul and all its layers. But it's more than just multiple POVs; Carliann has built many worlds, many histories, and many stories, all mixed into one intricate tale of trauma and trauma healing.

While so much is happening in Majikaero, the Earth isn't without its traumatic events and pure and utter darkness spreading. We follow events in both realms, both equally filled with hardships, just of a different nature. My heart was breaking so many times.

But also, there are so many soul connections growing and developing. Soul bonds are forming, some stronger than others, and we are still left wondering which ones will continue to develop and how. A possible "why choose" relationship is forming, but we have yet to see if it will come to that.

During this sequel, we learn more about the realms, individual powers, history, the plague in Majikaero, and the ones behind all the bad things going on. Yet, there is still so much to uncover. I feel like the next instalment will provide the answers we seek and satisfy our thirst for knowledge.

Buried Beneath the Light will be released on January 16th. Thank you, Carliann, for letting me share this journey with you.

What an amazing continuation to the series! It was such a good story, and I found it extremely difficult to put down. The cover is gorgeous again. It's colourful and suits the book tremendously. The illustrations at the chapter headings are fantastic again too!! The book is written perfectly and flows beautifully. This book, like its predecessor, has multiple POVs. This worked beautifully again, and we got to see the story through several pairs of eyes! The setting is stunning again. Carliann's continuation of the world-building is exquisite. The characters again are wonderful. They're so rich and well-developed. I feel like they're old friends! Nyx is still solid book boyfriend material, and I love how gentle he is with Eira. We got to explore some new relationships and almaove bonds, which was nice. Carliann again writes about sensitive topics such as mental health and trauma. She does this so well and with so much care and compassion. I love this book so much and can't recommend it enough.

Another great book in the Soul Bound Realms series!

I found this one to be a lot more spicy, dark, and more fear based moments in this one.

This one also gave you so much character development from all of the characters (& there are a lot). You also get way more information on what is actually going on & you find out you really can't trust anyone.

There were some really hard scenes for me in this one so I definitely suggest checking your TW!

You get:
• Dark Romantasy
• Spicy
• Found Family
• Dystopian
• Chosen One
• Soul Mates
• Don't Trust Anyone

I highly recommend this one and this series! Available on KU, ebook, hardcover, and paperback.

I recently read the first one as an ARC and rushed over to this and inhaled it within 24 hours. Honestly loved this one more than the first.

I loved the plot, I loved seeing more perspectives, in the first book I struggled with this initially but by this one I was hooked. I especially enjoyed the drama, tension and the ending leaves you wanting more instantly.

I loved the themes of healing and mental health and the spice wasn't overdone, it was subtle and on theme. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series.

———my thoughts———

Of course (and as always) this review is only my opinion.
After enjoying book one in the Soul Bound Realms series, it’s easy to see why my rating for this book leaves me disappointed. The Light Within (book one) may have not been my favourite book of last year, but it was entertaining and enjoyable. Unfortunately, i believe this sequel fell into the trap of trying to do too much at once.
Not only were there multiple plot lines happening at the same time, there were also a LOT of POVs, and the change between them every chapter made the storyline feel jumpy and abrupt.
I am, for the most part, a fast reader, and even books around this size (500 pages) don’t take me much longer than four days. Buried Beneath The Light, however, took me more than a week to read. (This was partly my own fault, as i neglected to reread book one before diving in, and was therefore confused for the first 10%).
Carliann Jean’s magic system is interestingly unique, but it would have benefited from a more detailed guide, or perhaps a recap at the beginning of the book. Part of the said magic system includes connections similar to mate-bonds or magically assisted strong friendships. These were explored a little in the last book, to my recollection, as the main two characters (Nyx and Eria) are bonded and have been so in several lifetimes. So, you can imagine my confusion when this book started to introduce the idea of Eria beginning to feel another strong romantic bond towards another character, to the point of her fantasising about both Nyx and the other character. She also did nothing to refuse his advances and touches (and even reciprocated them), which didn’t sit right with me. I understand that this is fantasy, and there are different rules, but to my eyes, these interactions read as emotional cheating. I have read various versions of why choose/reverse harem/fmm+ relationships before, and they did not feel like this. I had liked Nyx and Eria’s relationship last book, but this made me too uncomfortable to enjoy their interactions anymore.

Thanks for reading! 🖤

I went into Buried Beneath the Light, thinking I knew what to expect after Beneath the Starlit Sea emotional wreckage, found family, and a world stitched together with heartbreak and hope But Carliann Jean didn’t just deliver a sequel; she cracked open the story’s soul and let all the raw, messy beauty spill out.

From the first page, I felt like I was standing in the ashes of everything the characters had survived in Rioa. The monstrous attacks may have ended, but their aftermath seeps into every part of the story, grief, guilt, and the desperate search for light when the darkness feels endless. Eira, Nyx, and their soul-bonded friends are struggling to hold it all together, their connections stretched thin as they uncover painful truths about themselves and the power that binds them.

And while the chaos unfolds in Majikaero, the story’s pulse beats just as fiercely on Earth. The chapters with Astira and Liv gutted me. The trauma they carry after years in an underground cult is devastating, and watching them fight to truly fight to reclaim pieces of themselves was both harrowing and beautiful. There’s so much pain here, but it’s written with compassion and honesty, showing that healing isn’t linear it’s jagged, fragile, and sacred.

What I love most about this book and this series is how it balances darkness and light. Carliann Jean doesn’t shy away from the monsters, both literal and emotional, but she also never lets you forget the power of love, forgiveness, and connection. Every line feels intentional, every emotion earned.

By the end, I felt cracked open in the best possible way haunted, hopeful, and aching for the next book.

⚡️Thank you, Love Book Tours and Carliann Jean, for sharing this book with me!

Buried Beneath the Light by Carliann Jean is an emotional roller coaster of a book.there is a list of trigger warnings at the beginning of the book,  so if you are someone who is easily affected by emotional trauma, just be careful. I don’t think I’ve seen the blending of mental health into a fantasy book so prominent before, but it was pulled off very well in this story.

Each chapter is told from a different character's perspective. Weaving together a story that is full of powerful earthly and spiritual vibes. There is a lot of inner turmoil with these characters, we enter the story after a horrific event at the night festival, where bodies are torn and mental stability is shattered to total pieces . The healers in this world mend not only physical wounds but also spiritual ones.

The story spans both the earthly realm and an alternate magical realm, both are under very heavy duress. This is a story of healing, This is a story of healing both physically and mentally. With each character trying to find their own path to recovery though some seem to resist.

At times, I felt uncomfortable, but then there were some light-hearted moments that took me by surprise. My favorite character was the very large cat, Zaya. I think I would really like to see a story with her as the main character. I believe she has a lot to say.

I did enjoy this book. I do have to say that this is book 2 in a series, and I came in on the middle of the story, so I had to do some catching up as I was reading. It is possible to read this book without the first but I suggest you read The Light Within first to know the whole story.

“That’s what true friends do. Ours souls find one another when we’re lost and in pain.”

Book 2 in the Sound Bound Realms series, this installment is darker, grittier and spicier than the first. This post-apocalyptic why choose romantasy is filled with magical realms, profound and passionate feminine power, found family and platonic soulmates, chaos and survival, inner demons that fight for control and the healers who combat them. Please check triggers prior to indulging.

This part of the story picks up right where book 1 ends with the healers rushing to mend the wounds caused by the attacks all while trying to figure out why these attacks are happening. On earth, corruption takes root as the humans flee to underground societies in hopes of escaping the darkness that has been unleashed. Will the trauma be too much for the bonds to remain intact? Will the darkness prevail or will the light be enough to banish the shadows and heal the wounds?

Well written and a relatively easy read despite the volume of pages. There are plenty of worlds and backstories told in this series and they do not skimp on the details. However, it would have been nice to have a brief recap/refresher in book 2. Found family and platonic soulmates are some of my favorite tropes and this book really drove home just how wonderful those relationships can be.

“Creatures of the light are immune to the darkness.”

Buried Beneath the Light by Carliann Jean is the second book in The Soul Bound Realms series. This book is the sequel in the series and it is recommended to read the first book The Light Within (which is great as well!).

After they are attacked, they are a traumatized and are trying to help others heal as well as care for themselves. This story discusses deep themes, including mental health and recovery from trauma.

The ending of book 1 and the beginning of book 2 seamlessly continue the story. The multiple points of view are woven seamlessly with each chapter and move the story forward, keeping the reader engaged and connected to the characters. In this second book, Eira and Nyx, along with their friends, seek to help those impacted by attacks and the plague of darkness in Majikaero.

The prose is vivid and detailed, and themes of the story are thought-provoking and reflective.

Readers who enjoy multi POV, stories focused on healing and mental health, and fantasy romance stories in a post-apocalyptic setting will enjoy this book. There are open door scenes. There will be a third book in the series.

There are content and trigger warnings at the beginning of the book before reading.

I was provided a copy of this book by Love Book Tours and the author for free and am leaving an honest review.

Thank you LBT for having me on this review tour and for my gifted copy of this epub.

Sooo I wasn’t sure a book gets better but it did. This is the second book in this series and wow oh wow such a fantastic read. I don’t even know where to begin!!

I love how this author uses so many different POV. i felt like i really got to hear from so many people and i love that we dive so much deeper into one’s soul and the complexity of it all. I love that the author is able to built so many worlds and does it so well like I can’t even get over how well the author writes and world builds like it’s crazy good.

There is so much happening in Majikaero. Earth isn’t without its problems and issues like how the darkness is spreading I like how we follow both realms really closely and the soil connections wow. Holy cow!!

This book was pure amazing. Absolutely loved this book. This book was a little more dark which I loved. I can’t say enough good things about this book. I am afraid if I say more I may give something away. Just get these books !!!

So I read the first book when it came out, and while that one I struggled to read at first I couldn’t put it down eventually. Now this new addition to the series literally made me cry at points. This book series calls to my soul, and is helping me to heal in ways I never knew a book could. There’s some spiciness, but there’s also deep feelings and emotions rooted in this book. I read it in two days. I laughed at parts and I cried at parts. I feel like I’m trying to figure out this world with the characters. I felt like I was being buried under the overwhelming emotions that they feel at times. This author has created a series that is making me foam at the mouth waiting for the next installment and I cannot wait to read more of the world that she is creating. If you want to read a book with spiciness, actual emotions, and a storyline that keeps you guessing what happens next then this is the book for you.

Okay let me start off by saying, this is a big book. Its even bigger when you have to do the catch up game from book one haha. You have to read the first prior to the second to keep up with the plot in book two.

No spoiler review:

How do I say this without sounding like I'm repeating myself with my other reviews... THIS IS AMAZING! I love dark, and I love fantasy so this was right down my alley! There's so much plot that you're absolutely spoiled! And I'll never shy away from the spice hehe

The author knows how to put together a magnificent cast of characters and well throughout plot, fantasy is a hard genre to go into for writers, but when they write a top tier book, as a reader, I need to shout from the rooftops how good this book is!

I'm going to need to pick up the first in the series as a physical, I need that shelf trophy!!!

Once again, thank you to the author and LBT for allowing me to tour this book, thrilled to have been on the team! <3

I really enjoyed the continuation of this story and can't wait for pt 3 to see what happens next.

It is very well written and you can tell that the author is someone with mental health training. She has taken the time to explore different emotions and difficulties all of the main characters are going through.

Although there is romance it is not just focused on the MMC and FMC but the side characters as well. There is a good balance of romance and the progress of those relationships as well as the plot.

I like that the author has woven humour into a book with such dark themes.

I think most people would enjoy this book but please do check the trigger warnings.

Carliann seems to have maji herself with how well written this sequel was. We met many new characters as well as getting to see different perspectives and points of view. I was intimidated thinking I would get confused, but Carliann made sure each voice and story was personal for that character.

There are darker traumatic themes in this book that help us better understand the character development. I especially connected with Astira’s story and was glad to read her story and follow her true strength of resilience.

I couldn’t stop reading once I picked up this book! I was so drawn in and felt like I was really in the Soul
Bound Realms by how descriptive everything was.

I am now a lifetime fan and excited to see where this series goes 🫶.

Buried Beneath the Light is an emotional whirlwind packed with secrets, survival, and just the right amount of chaos. Between Eira and Nyx battling shadowy plagues in Majikaero and Astira and Liv navigating a post-apocalyptic underground cult escape on Earth, this story keeps you hooked from start to finish. The dual storylines blend magic, trauma, and resilience in a way that feels raw and real. It’s gripping, heart-wrenching, and full of twists that’ll leave you questioning who can truly heal and at what cost. This sequel doesn’t just shine a light on the darkness—it makes you face it head-on. A must-read!

Buried Beneath the Light is the second book in the Soul Bound Realms series. It’s a story about acceptance of our own demons and inner dark side. I enjoyed the multiple POVs that the story was told I . I always feel that this provides a greater depth to the characters and the story. We also learned more about the two realms in this book which was interesting. The world building is brilliant as always in these books. Although there are many trigger warnings and, at times, a bit uncomfortable to read, this was necessary to the story. There were also some lighter moments. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it, however, reading book one is essential to really grasping this one.

I’m normally a fan one a 1 person POV as I get far too confused when there are multiple perspectives, however Carliann Jean has made me eat my words because I absolutely loved this side to the book!
I enjoyed The Light Within (book 1), but Buried Beneath the Light takes it up a notch with the world building, spice, developed magic system and juxtaposition between worlds.
Strongly recommend that you begin with book 1 as book 2 picks up from the ending (and I found book 1 super emotional).
There’s an abundance of pretty much everything in Buried Beneath the Light, including triggers so please check them out before you start.

This is the second book in the soul bound realm's series, and it was a great read. I loved the multiple povs, especially with Astria and Liv back on earth. So much happens throughout the book. The plot twists were great and left you wondering what would happen next. This book was much darker and spicer. There was a lot of healing and more self-discovery. You will be surprised with who you can't trust. My favorite part is you get to read about the other characters who have almaoves. It's not just based on one main connection.

The way I loved the first book in the series does not compare to the love I have for this book. Everything that started brewing in The Light Within just came back to the surface as I was reading. I can’t spoil this for anyone!!! This found family and everything in between just has magic seeping in its bones. Nothing but positive vibes for the writing and story. You should check it out 💛

This is book two in the soul bound realms series and I would highly recommend reading book one before this one, both can be found on kindle unlimited. This is a very rich world and it is depicted beautifully, its one of those book where you need to make yourself comfortable and fully immerse yourself into it. I really liked the way we read through the eyes of multiple characters, this book covers some very heavy topics so as always check for trigger warnings but I personally found that the author handled them brilliantly

This is book 2 in the Soulbound Realms series, and after being blown away by the first book, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was darker and smuttier than the first 😏 I love this author and her world building, the way she links mental health and trauma into her fantasy elements and her talent for using multiple POVs! The smexy scenes in this book are absolutely spot on, and I got way too excited to find her leaning towards my FAVE genre; Why Choose! Yipeeeeee!

Book two of the Soul Bound Realms series, Buried Beneath the Light deepens and broadens the foundation laid in the first installment. While book one centered on finding the light through the darkness the sequel shifts towards this darkness.

The worldbuilding and magic system is expanded, using multiple POVs and plotlines across the different locations.

The books turn towards the darkness and acceptance of our own inner darkness is summised in the books blurb and quote “We’re all just monsters wearing different skins”

Thanks Love Books Tours and the author for the ARC opportunity. As always, this is an honest, voluntary review.

I remember I really liked the first book of the series because there was a lot of healing in the story and I can say, book 2 carried that beautiful message once again. There's even a bit of spice in here what I was so nicely surprised by. The plot is thick and I love that it's consistent. Honestly, everything works, possibly even better than in book 1.

I really recommend this book to everybody who likes stories of healing and great plot.

Book 2 of the soul bound realms series.
How what a read. This was a roller coaster of a ride. I really did enjoyed this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. We carried on where book 1 left. I loved Eira and Nyx. How they were together. I loved the writing style and the story. I got into this book straight away. I listened to this book on kindle unlimited. In 2 sittings. I couldn't put it down. It was like a mini movie in my head. I am looking forward to the next book in the brilliant series.

What a wonderful mix of fantasy, mental health rep, and dystopian vibes. Multi realms, and multi POV!!

I loved the multi POVs, as you get so much from each characters perspective. It makes the story quite immersive.
The twists and turns in this one BLEW ME AWAY!!!

This is such a gorgeous and intricate dark romantasy ⚔ I especially love the focus on trauma & healing 🖤 Carliann’s writing is so uniquely colorful and vivid—the world is painted so beautifully! I loved seeing more of these characters and the threats they face.

Also, one unique aspect about this book that I absolutely LOVE is how we get multiple romantic relationships developing at the same time! (Instead of focusing on one couple per book.) IDK man, it just feels right *chef’s kiss* 👩‍🍳💋
