A new fast-paced, campy pop culture Slasher with a twist or two.
When Greek sisters Themis and Hara find out they've made it through the auditions in search of a new international girl band, they're thrilled. The last stage before the final selection takes place inside a majestic mansion in the mountains of Sarajevo, in which six girls will battle it out until the finish line. When a brutal killer shows up, it soon becomes clear not everyone will make the cut.
From the author of the "Europea Halls" Trilogy and "The Namaste Slasher".
Mr Shivers knows how to write a great slasher book. I love that nobody is safe... from the last book I read Namaste Slasher (which is in the same universe) where even on a wellness retreat you can meet a horrible demise and now try-outs for a girl band are fighting for their lives!
The author is skilled with characters and capturing the modern slang and trends. I found myself really rooting for all the girls flaws and all. The creative deaths he imagines has me worried about his mental stability 🤣
I love how this book had characters from all over the world and the setting of Sarajevo brought an added cultural element. The author describes the scenery, people and food beautifully. It feels like we are travelling with the characters and experiencing the landscape through their eyes. This is not just a slasher book!
The story follows the last 6 girls who have completed against thousands for the opportunity to be the next big girl band. However, not all 6 can make it. They are put through gruelling dance routine and vocal exercises. Only the best will survive the competition. But what happens to those who don't make the cut? Dreams shattered into pieces and now something horrifying lurks in the shadows!
Another fantastic read. If you love slasher films you will love this fresh take on the genre. With huge thanks to the author who provided an ARC for me to review.
Alan flexes his muscles on this fast pace modern Friday the 13th/Scream slasher storyline. This was my first time reading this author and it won’t be the last! This book was non-stop action slasher novel which Shivers excels on this conception with a side rock n’ roll girl band angst. If you love slasher movies and yelling at the tv telling the person not to go in the house, THEN this book is for you!! You will not believe what twists and turns that are in this book!! Enjoy! Alan will also be at Books & Brews 2.0 in Indiana. I can’t wait to meet him!
I want to thank Alan Shivers for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
(in English down below) Een heerlijke slasher gecombineerd met x-factor vibes.
English: A delicious slasher combined with x-factor vibes. I didn't know I needed this, but damn what a good combo. In the story, you follow several girls who are fighting for their place in the new girl band. They just didn't know it would be so bloody.
It reads super smoothly, even though I don't read much in English. In addition, Alan describes in very creative ways how the slasher kills the victims. The story is well paced and has multiple POVs, so you get to know the characters better. It always hurts extra when they don't make it to the end of the book, but that's part of it. In addition, the book is full of strong FMCs and queer rep.
Alan has also made a matching playlist with references in the book to a specific song. Super cool (with great music) and a nice extra layer in the book.
I'm so glad I read the namaste killer before killer vocals, it gives you a little more information. I am really curious how this will continue and what will happen next. I really want more background on the slasher.
There was certainly a plot twist in it that I didn't see coming, it was really different than I expected. And what an end to the book this was. I need part 2, I want to know how it goes further!!
They are talent scouting for a new international girl band and Themis and Hara, sisters from Greece , are thrilled to have made it through to the final six. The final stage of the competition takes them to Saravejo and a huge gothic mansion in the mountains, Bit a cloaked killer is stalking them, who makes the Final Cut?
Less lost in music and more killed by it, this is a thrilling slasher that takes place in the most beautiful locations in Eastern Europe. Like a Bond movie it feels glamorous and decadent with the added frisson of grisly murder! The joy for me is figuring out not only who makes it to the end but what twisted method will be used to dispatch the unwary.
The mansion is hauntingly macabre but beautiful, the deaths shockingly original and gory, whilst the characters are so well drawn and believable, the sisters banter is so delicious and exactly how siblings interact.
ADHD rep that truly gives a glimpse into the neurospicy way of thinking and realistic queer relationships. First in a series, I cannot wait to see where this goes and I defy anyone to read this and predict what twist is coming next, Alan really knows how to not only subvert the genre but how to make you love the characters and then break your heart!
These are slashers for a new age and no-one writes them better!
I don’t know how Alan does it. Combining all the things that made the 90’s and early 00’s. With a slasher style off scream and the girl bands it makes a perfect combination off a good ya slasher with a side trauma for the milinals. What I love about this book is the knowledge that other books are interwoven in this same world and that Alan is an amazing storyteller and I’m curious where the next book is going to take us
From the first pages I was immediately drawn into the story, omg those first two chapters were incredibly tensive! I felt really disturbed and it felt like I was watching a horror movie. The gruesome violence was top notch👌🏼💪🏻
After the first chapter, the characters are getting introduced more and you can recover from all the brutal action for a while, but you definitely have to stay on guard! The characters are all nice and interesting and you immediately feel a connection with them.
I loved the vivid descriptions of the city, the landscape and the Gothic mansion. I could easily imagine what it looked like, which is exactly what you want in a good book! The creepiness of the mansion sent instant shivers down my spine and I found myself in a constant state of alertness.
Because of all those lovable and kind characters I was always like, noooooo let at least that one live, but nobody’s safe in an Alan Shivers slasher.. 🥲 Sometimes I thought I knew which turn the story would take, but the next twist was always right around the corner and oh my, those murder scenes were absolutely insane! 🔥All in all a good slasher and the best thing is that there is more to come! I’m already looking forward to it!
When they say the instustry is cut throat, i didn't know they meant literally!! Yet another amazing book by the master of slashers! I absolutely loved this book. I enjoyed the tie-in to the namaste slasher. I really enjoyed getting the story from everyone's perspectives. I will also say opening with the killers POV *chefs kiss* Amazing. Alan shivers has become one of, if not my most favorite slashers author, cannot wait to see what he does next. Namaste bitches!!!
This was such a fun read, until it wasn't because that ending was WOAH! It felt like I was watching a good horror movie, the intense chase scenes, the kills, even the vibes. It was so very good. The ending left me gutted for two reasons; One, IYKYK and two, because it ended so abruptly and I needed MORE. This is the first book I've read by Alan Shivers but it certainly will not be the last. I look forward to buying this when it's available so I can add it to my shelf and give it a re-read before the sequel comes out.
Alan Shivers does it again with another great horror book with slasher movie vibes!
Such a fast-paced, page turner with a fun writing style that is also full of suspense and gore! I enjoyed the setting and getting to know all the characters. And he did a fantastic job weaving in all of their POVs.
But that cliffhanger ending though… leaves you wanting more and now cannot wait for the next book in the series!
Alan Shivers delivers an electrifying journey through the world of music and ambition in his latest novel, "Killer Vocals." The story centers around two Greek sisters, Themis and Hara, who venture to Sarajevo with dreams of fame and fortune as they audition for a girl group. From the outset, Shivers immerses readers in the opulence of their surroundings—the stunning mansion that serves as their boot camp is described with such vivid detail that one can practically hear the echoes of their laughter and the strains of their auditions ringing through its halls ( if they hadn’t sound parroted all the rooms)
One of the standout features of "Killer Vocals" is its multi-perspective narrative. Shivers expertly intertwines the viewpoints of various characters, allowing readers to delve into their backstories and motivations. This approach not only enriches the character development but also creates a tapestry of experiences that make the stakes feel all the more real. As we journey with Themis and Hara, we see how their dreams collide with the harsh realities of the music industry, brilliantly illustrated through the cold, cutthroat dynamics that Shivers captures so well.
The cultural backdrop of Sarajevo adds another layer of depth to the story. Shivers paints the city with a brush of rich imagery and historical references, making it feel alive and inviting. One can almost sense the vibrant streets, hear the lively music, and taste the local cuisine, all of which enhance the immersive experience.
However, just as the sisters are settling into their seemingly idyllic setting, the narrative takes a dark and thrilling turn. The introduction of a cloaked killer injects a pulse-pounding suspense that would make any slasher movie proud. Shivers masterfully combines elements of a talent competition with the tension of a mystery thriller, creating a unique blend reminiscent of both "X Factor" and Dan Brown's Angle and Demons. The twists and turns are unexpected and keep readers on the edge of their seats, eagerly flipping pages to uncover the truth behind the chilling events.
Overall, "Killer Vocals" is a captivating read that expertly balances themes of ambition, sisterhood, and survival in a ruthless industry. Alan Shivers has crafted a compelling narrative that not only entertains but also leaves readers pondering the darker undercurrents of fame. I found myself fully invested in the characters and their journeys, and by the end, I was left craving more from Shivers. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a thrilling blend of music, mystery, and drama. I am eagerly looking forward to diving into more of his work in the future!
Killer vocals; a shivering mix between Scream and X-Factor, maybe even mixed a little with Scream Queens. Exactly what a lover of the slasher genre is looking for if you ask me. So here is my honest review.
During Killer Vocals we follow a group of women who compete for a place inside a girl band. The stakes are high, but they don't exactly know how high.
All characters give off a strong impression and they're rememberable. The representation of the queer community is absolutely chefskiss. So is the execution of the gore, which leads to imagine atmospheric and thrilling scenes.
The story is fast paced and told through different personalities. It's a multiple POV story about friendship, dread and proving your worth. Due to the short chapters and easy use of wording, I could fly through the pages. Alan has an easy way of writing and following the story, making it easy to stay on track even if it's a multiple POV story.
I highly enjoyed my time with this. This book has such a thrilling beginning as it was something I did not expect. I was sucked in right away and couldn't put it down again as I finished it in 1 sitting. It leaves me hunger for more. I loved the chasing scenes and was shocked to see what happened near the ending. I won't go into detail; but damn Alan! I need that second book now.
Also, the playlist was such a nice touch to the story! I loved reading about the songs and being able to experience it if I choose too.
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who adores the slasher genre as much as I do. It's a very fast pace book with nice references. Definitely read this if you love Scream and reality talent TV shows!
The book was 4 stars. I absolutely loved the multiple point of view and short chapters, it made the book fast paced which is always great for slasher books. I also loved how we got a lot of first person perspective from the victims as they were dying, that's not something I've seen a lot and it works really well. As someone who also grew up in the 90's I very much appreciated the music choices, I actually would give the playlist 5 stars. Incredible choices, I love a book with an amazing playlist. I also liked how the book starts with a bang then goes back to a lead up and suspense building and then bang, bang, bang. A lot of slasher books start with a lot of suspense building before you get to the action but this one throws you right in there. I would say don't get attached to anyone because they probably won't be around long. But you're reading a slasher novel you probably already know that. We do however have to talk about the ending Mr.Shivers... I really hope there is a book 2
Themis and Hara, two sisters looking for stardom, decide to take a trip to Sarajevo for auditions to join an all girl band. Upon arrival, they are wisked away to an enormous mansion that holds the final auditions. Both sisters and four other girls compete for success and...fight for their lives.
Alan Shivers nails it again with his love for slashers. Yet again, his stories start with terrifying excitement that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters are perfectly written with strong female leads who aren't afraid to kick ass. Shivers villains are always a delight to read, but this one is menacing and downright evil as you can get. I wouldn't say the beginning chapters start out slow, but it is necessary to introduce the characters one by one. An excellent read with plenty of that slasher gore that we all love. Rating 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Can you imagine what would happen if you crossed X Factor with Scream? Well, imagine no longer. In this book, we follow sisters Themis and Hara as they enter the boot camp stage of their audition process. Along with four other girls, they find themselves staying in a mansion where they have to show off their vocals and dance moves. Anyone who doesn't make it through is sent home. Only, they don't make it home, thanks to the masked man that's following them. Alan Shivers is definitely the King when it comes to slashers. This one was fun, fast-paced and certainly had a few gasp out loud moments. The kill scenes were brilliant, as always. My one and only issue? The ending was too abrupt. It didn't feel like it was the end and I found myself feeling frustrated that there was no more. If we get a sequel, I'll shut up about it.
If you like girlbands and slasher I would definitely recommend this book. You follow a group of 6 girls, but specifically 2 sisters; Themis and Hara. These girls are in the process of becoming a girlband. BUT they still have to prove to the judges that they have what it takes. If they don't they get eliminated from the bootcamp.
I was so sad that the book was over, but the good news is that this is the first of a trilogy.
PS: I also liked the fact that the author included part of 'the namaste slasher' in this book
Thank you for the Arc and opportunity to read your book :) i’ve always wanted to read something written by you.
I really loved the idea behind this novel it was really fun to hear about the auditions and being in the finals for the girl band ! Alan really made sure to put a lot of detail into the writing and the characters. I felt it was so good but i was often itching for more action which i’m sure will come in the following books ! The killings were excellent!!
Fantastic book yet again from Alan Shivers. In Killer Vocals the reader follows 6 girls as they try and make it through boot camp to become part of an international girl group. But who knew that boot camp could be this deadly?
Multiple POV, on the edge of your seat chapters and an ending that left me wanting more. Fantastic book, well worth a read.
A fun, bloody love letter to pop music! The idea, to me, was quite original and I liked the X Factor vibe and the whole talent competition part. I liked the original kills, especially near the end. It was fun to read about Bosnia as seen through the eyes of the foreigners. First person POV worked quite well to further the mystery. My issue is that some parts felt a lot like the characters were talking to audiences and sometimes we were being told how they felt instead of being shown and there were some info dumpy parts, especially when characters were being introduced. All in all, a really fun read for lovers of slashers.
I had a fun time reading this one. I love a great slasher book. This was very well written and a great read and caught my attention from the first page. I found it impossible to put this book down and it and perfect kill scenes and a great storyline to it!
I really enjoyed how the story line was Scream mixed with X-factor vibes, slasher style. The ending had me gasping. Excuse me?! More more more! (Pretty please with a slasher on top) This book felt like being in a horror movie and I love that. There's chasing, there's slashing, there's 💀 and a fair amount of gore. The FMC's were strong leads, I love it when they don't just drop to the floor and get themselves offed. The villain was a menace!
I want to add that I loved that there was a it of the Namaste slasher incorporated in this book as well. All in all, I want to recommend this book to anyone who loves 90s slasher vibes, anyone who enjoys shows like X-factor, people who love a slasher with queer rep and those who love a good chase scene.
I can't wait for the next book. I'm gutted that this one has ended... 😉
It's always quite refreshing to find a talented author willing to entertain common horror tropes from a rarely exploited point of view, and Alan Shivers is precisely such a case: his slasher book series approach the theme with great cultural sensitivity and a true passion for diversity and LGBTQ representation. "Killer Vocals," the first part of a new series (which explains the cliffhanger ending), pits a group of young people imbued with the talent show mentality, against a mysterious figure stalking and killing them one by one; the setting being a huge mansion in the mountains of Sarajevo, in the Balkans.
Being Greek myself, it felt really good to discover that the main characters are two Greek sisters, hailing from Thessaloniki, a major city in Northern Greece. Themis (meaning "justice," and pronounced "the-miss," the stress on "the," as in "Theodor") and Hara (pronounced like "Khar-a," the stress on the second "a," meaning "joy") are two ambitious and sweet girls dreaming to be members of an international girl band.
It's a nice coincidence that recently, among the Greek contestants who would represent Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest, was a girl duo, their musical performance very similar to the girl band acts of the protagonists of Shivers' book! Unfortunately, they failed to win; Greeks preferred someone whose song was supposed to carry an ethnically colored message, about the Pontic Greek genocide by the Turks.
It is at this point that certain incongruities arise for any Greek reader who picks up "Killer Vocals": there's just no way Themis and Hara can be really Greek in origin - they don't act like it, they don't think like it, they don't even sound like it. First of all, no Greek would call Instanbul by the Turkish name - it's always "Constantinople" among Greeks. Second, Thessaloniki is the most fanatically religious city in the country, standing very close to the Holy Mountain, and anyone who's lived there has seen all kinds of absurdities religious fanaticism creates, especially, e.g., priests on the street claiming that Freemasons are the devil - so that there's no way the "Greek sisters" would have needed anyone to have gone down a rabbit hole to tell them what Freemasonry is. Third, there has been a plethora of talent shows in Greece the last twenty years, to the point that almost everyone knows how intricately these shows work: only someone who's been watching exclusively show auditions on YT would believe that these shows are just "the three judges," as Shivers seems to believe; a whole crew of 20 or 30 persons are usually involved, a fact that the "Greek sisters" would be aware of already, and so would never accept the idea that "three judges" representing an international talent show would host final auditions in a secluded mansion on a mountain in the Balkans. Finally, Greeks are ethnically very sensitive, politically most obnoxious, and culturally very contrarian. None of these traits are even hinted in Shivers' book, a sort of "kumbaya" atmosphere permeating all the girls' interactions instead.
I can't judge how faithfully, e.g., the South Korean characters are described. But if the Greek parts are any indication, Shivers needs to do more research or at least employ better beta readers for a novel of such ambition.
Last but not least: "The Namaste Slasher," the book supposed to be the "spiritual prequel" to "Killer Vocals" (I for one do not understand what this means, other than that the villain is the same in both books? perhaps that both books demonstrate diversity sensitivity?) gave me great trouble with its undue emphasis on queer representation, to the detriment of the slasher aspects of the story. Something similar happens here (the cis males are the "bad guys"), though TBH the murder scenes are very few and far between, as well as very brief, so perhaps the point of the book is not so much to tell a genuine slasher story, but a story primarily about diversity. Not a bad thing, of course, but it might explain why I can't recommend the novel as a slasher to horror lovers who enjoy Adam Cesare, Jon Athan, or even slasher/horror comedy books.
If you want a fast-paced, unique slasher that you know will have racked up a big body count by the final pages, then Alan Shivers should be your go-to. Eschewing the New York or LA high school-set, heteronormative stories so prevalent in the genre, Shivers can be relied on to mix things up. After the Europa Halls trilogy and last year's The Namaste Slasher, he has returned with a new story, set in the same world as the latter.
Killer Vocals is typically Eurocentric for the author, with the lead roles in this book taken by Themis and Hara, Greek sisters with aspirations to become pop stars. They've gotten through to the finals of a set of auditions to find a new international girl group, held in Sarajevo. Along with the other four women who have made it to this stage, they think that their biggest concerns are to nail their dance moves and impress during their solo vocal sections. However, a hulking figure in a mask and robe is stalking the city—and getting cut from the competition may also mean these singers will get cut in real life. Think of a Friday The 13th sequel taking place on the set of American Idol, with an accompanying playlist and song cues dotted throughout—it's just as fun as that sounds.
Much like his previous books, Killer Vocals is a lot of fun. We jump between different first-person points of view from chapter to chapter, mostly one of the aspiring vocalists, and events unfold from multiple perspectives. Shivers largely does a good job of making these characters feel different enough from each other, although I occasionally wasn't sure which woman was which. I put this down to the necessary similarities between them—some prefer singing, some dancing, and some are queer—and they have differing relationships with each other, but ultimately all are strangers in the city and have the same goal for being there. The intrigue and suspicion come from the people around them—judges, staff at the house they're staying in and, of course, the masked killer himself.
The main complaint I have about the book, and it's a big one for me, is that I didn't know it was part one of a series going in. Just when I expected the book to ramp up to an explosive climax, it suddenly ended. This won't be an issue if you expect it, and I know I'll be eagerly reading the next book when released, but it did leave me with a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth. However, it's nowhere near enough to stop any slasher fan from picking this up—you're still getting gruesome kills, with some inventive exits scattered throughout the story, as well as great female main characters and some plot twists and turns. Another very solid entry into the catalogue of an author who has yet to let me down.
I'm really conflicted about Killer Vocals. There were a lot of things that I liked, but a lot of things that didn't quite land with me.
Let's start with the things that I liked. I really loved the competition theme of the book. It was something new for me, and I enjoyed the idea of a talent competition gone wrong. Though I did think the girls were all a bit naive for not being at least a little suspicious of the whole thing with all mysterious lack of information and secrecy.
I liked the scenery described in the book as well. It all sounded so pretty! I've not had the opportunity to travel much, so I love living vicariously through books and getting to learn about places I've never been.
Now, one thing I did notice is that the characters were all fairly similar. While the girls were all different physically, their inner thoughts were fairly alike across the board. It made it hard for me to remember specific details about each of the girls because they all kind of blended together. Some of the plot points/themes felt almost recycled from The Namaste Slasher; this wouldn't be a problem necessarily if you had some space in between reading the books, but having come straight from TMS, I almost felt like I was reading that book over again but with a slightly different set of circumstances (RIP to anyone in a relationship or who has any kind of connection with another character).
And the ending. I'll start by saying I'm not a huge fan of a cliffhanger ending, but I can set that aside when it's done right. This one felt abrupt. I don't feel like I got much resolution or answer for what was going on or the motivations of the people involved. Maybe I'm trying to connect this book too much with The Namaste Slasher, but I'm really confused about how these events connect, the timeline they occur, and what the actual reasons are for what Ivan does.
All that being said, I'd still be happy to read more of this series when it comes out. It kept me engaged enough to want to know what will happen despite my issues with the book.
The award to the most creative, fun, laugh out loud book I've read thus far this month goes to KILLER VOCALS that comes complete with a Spotify playlist!
The hunt is on for the next big girl band. Executives are looking for powerhouse vocals, smooth harmonies, and killer dance moves. Greek sisters Themis and Hara find out they've made it through the auditions to the final stage. The setting is a stately castle in the hills of Sarajevo, and it's there that the final six girls will complete a series of challenges that will leave only the very best standing. However, a brutal slasher's plans will change everything as there may not be anyone to leave standing.
The kills were brutal, over the top, and somehow managed to combine an 80s horror vibe with a healthy dose of this current generation's slang. It's giving intense, they would say. It was totally rad, I would say.
The international settings and the queer representation were perfectly executed. This book is the 'spiritual prequel' to 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝑺𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒓, and while it's not necessary to read it to follow this one, why wouldn't you? A slasher set at a wellness retreat? It's giving vitality.
A huge thank you to the author for this early read. This book is set to publish March 29, 2025.
This was yet another fast paced slasher I read by this author and all together the second ever slasher I read- and I loved it. I enjoyed it a bit more than the first one that I read.
I loved the fast paced short chapters and I loved the unusual location - this one takes place in Sarajevo which is refreshing to see. Also, don't get too attached to any of the characters because nobody and I mean nobody, even those that are barely in the story is safe and can die in a unique gruesome way at any moment.
I did find it a bit unrealistic- but then this entire story is unrealistic when several characters were stabbed and were bleeding but still managed to walk around and even run in some cases- but it made for a good story that keeps you on your toes I guess.
The author said that reading the previous book is not neccessary to the story- but I feel that if I hadn't read this book I wouldn't understand a few things that happen in this one like how the killer is super fast and seemingly a monster that cannot be killed- I did wish that we saw some of the previous characters but we are not that lucky-
I am usually not a fan of open endings but this one is good - it leaves us with a few open questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book. So if you are in a mood for a really fast read that keeps you on your toes and that mixes in a few local legends from a place that is not usually in books this is the book for you.
Jumping straight into the story from the Killers' perspective had me intrigued. It definitely had me hooked wanting to find out how this story was going to pan out.
When Greek sisters Themis and Hara make it through to the girl band boot camp, they are thrilled. A trip to Sarajevo living in a mansion with 4 other girls up in the mountains becomes a fight to the end. Who will kill it in auditions, or be killed????
There were multiple POVs from the 6 main FMC's who all had different personalities from different cultural backgrounds. But all had the same goal in common to make it through auditions and be chosen for the girl band.
The tensions building with the chase scenes and level of gore was very well executed. Who will make it into the girl band? Who will be cut??? Quite literally!!!!!
I loved how there was a music playlist to go along with the story. It's very fitting with it being a girl band slasher! It really gives Scream/ X Factor vibes!!!!!
And the ending.... well, what can I say???? I gasped at how it ended!!!! I literally went.... WHAT???!!!! Leaving me hanging like that!!!
This was the first novel I have read by Alan Shivers, and I will be reading more 💯
