Laughter helps you lead, love, and learn The Laughter Factor has two elements that were both very enjoyable. There was the interesting analysis of how useful laughter can be, what makes us laugh, and the tactics we can use to make others laugh, not just at work but in many environments. There also was plenty of humor, which made me laugh a lot (and no doubt annoyed my long-suffering spouse as he tried to read his own book, although I gave him a number of good laughs when I could not resist reading him an especially good joke.). The Laughter Factor gives readers five tools to use to provoke laughter, and it has chapters on each. SURPRISE is the first and perhaps most obvious tool. POKE, the second tool, explains how to make fun of yourself and also tease others without offending them. INJOKES make people laugh while giving them a sense of superiority. WORDPLAY is a fun technique that can be used and even reused. It makes the audience consider you witty and again enhances their sense of superiority for “getting” the joke. AMPLIFY tells how you can use exaggeration both to amuse and to make a desired point. The factors all seemed valid, and as I read they reminded me of a number of situations where I or someone else put one of them to good use, such as when I used humor giving a eulogy at a friend’s funeral and watched his widow give a big smile and relax all over her previously tense body. Five tactics provides a good toolbox to use to amuse others, but within each tactic’s chapter the author presents a number of elements that go into that tactic as well as when you might use it, and, of course, some fun examples. The chapters were not as well organized as a reader might wish, although the content was good and relevant. I also noticed something I think the author might have usefully warned readers about. There were a number of humorous examples in the book that I just didn’t get because they referred to movies I had not seen or celebrities I do not know of. Using poor examples does not amuse an audience; on the contrary, it can alienate them. Despite the somewhat disorganized presentation, the book was definitely worth reading. It provided pleasure, interesting insights into people’s minds, and some tools to make other people (and me!) laugh in the future. I recommend it but do try to read it in a room alone where your laughs will not disturb others! I received an advance review copy of The Laughter Factor from Edelweiss and Berrett-Koehler Publishers
My favorite element of this book is the laugh language quiz. Found out my humor tactic is “Amplify.” Only note would be that the quizzes are at the end of each chapter instead of one quiz at the end. Nonetheless, it’s fun implementing ways to enhance my personal laugh language and guessing what my friends and family’s are. Read this if you want to feel good and have a positive nook to escape to, which is super rare to have, especially during times such as these.
My friend Adam Christing has done the impossible-or at least really difficult: he’s taken a book of dad-jokes and turned it into a truly profitable read for anyone who desires to have humor as a key element of their impact on the world. Having worked with Adam onstage and spent time with him in the real world, he is the genuine article and one of the funniest people I know. This book is a great guide to telling good stories, lifting people’s spirits and playing Balderdash.
Funny book! Would highly recommend to anyone in a leadership or management position for some good, and funny of course, advice on how to bring humor and good vibes to their team. I appreciated all the puns and the detailed breakdown on each style of humor. Funny and informative!!
