Coaching him was never part of the plan. Falling for her should NOT happen. But in hockey––and love––sometimes the best plays come when you break the rules.
Elle: Coaching the River City Renegades is exactly where I want to be—hockey, small-town charm, and zero drama…but there’s him.
Dixon Andrews. The team’s broody, infuriating, gorgeous goalie. He’s got a jawline that could cut glass and a grudge he’s pinned on me for something I didn’t even do. Now, he’s making my life turbulent one smoldering glare at a time.
I’ve coached at the highest level and handled more egos than I can count, but Dixon? He’s in a league of his own. The worst part? Beneath all that attitude is a man I can’t stop thinking about.
Dixon: Elle Carter is the one woman I swore I’d never forgive, but she just walked back into my life. As my coach.
She’s as bossy and infuriating as ever, and every time she’s near, I can feel my blood pressure spike. She’s also breathtaking. Sharp, beautiful, and still capable of turning my world upside down.
I’ve spent years convincing myself she didn’t matter. But now? Game after game, practice after practice, she’s breaking down my defenses—and if I’m not careful, I’ll break the biggest rule of all: to never fall for her. Not again.
Goalie, Interrupted is a closed door hockey romcom that includes tropes like enemies to lovers, secret relationship, and found family. This is the second book in a series, and it’s filled with sizzling chemistry and swoony kisses.
Anne Kemp is a bestselling author of romantic comedies. She loves reading (and she doesn’t it ridiculously fast, too!), gluten-free baking (because everyone needs a hobby that makes them crazy), and finding time to binge-watch her favorite shows. She grew up in Maryland but made Los Angeles her home until she encountered her own real-life meet-cute at a friend's wedding where she ended up married to one of the groomsmen. For real.
Anne now lives on the Kapiti Coast in New Zealand, and even though she was married at Mt. Doom, no…she doesn’t have a Hobbit. However, she and her husband do have a terrier named George Clooney and when she’s not writing, she’s usually with them taking a long walk on the river by their home.

“This man makes me so crazy, I both want to shake him and pull him close to me at the same time.”
I’m still holding a torch for hockey romcoms and this one had a few unique elements that really peaked my interest. It seems the FMC is often a social media marketer or physical therapist, but in this sweet story, Elle is a COACH. Yes, you read that correctly–after spending years on the ice herself, as well as coaching many teams, she’s now working with the defense and goalies for the River City Renegades. Cue the bitter enemy-ship with Dixon.
This team is the type of found family that warms my heart, and not only that, the whole coaching staff is lovable. Nan stole the show with her brash and blunt behavior, as did Hayden and the sweet relationship she has with Elle.
There is something really special about two sworn enemies who are forced together. The sparks fly like ice from an abrupt hockey stop, and I couldn’t get enough of the romantic interactions and shards of angst, banter, and healing.
I’m really enjoying this series!
Content: mild romance

In this book, Elle and Dixon get a second chance. Although they didn't have a romantic relationship when they met years ago, they definitely had a connection. Elle was recently hired as one of the coaches for Dixon's hockey team. Will this work between them now or is there too much in their way? Will their families get along? What about their teammates, other coaches and their fans say?
A sweet love story that readers of any age can read without embarrassment. A new to me author that I am excited to explore.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
My heart is happy after reading this book. ❤️ Dixon and Elle may have had a rough start, but it just got better and better. The reveal at the end was not a surprise in the least, but at least it got resolved and allowed the guys to show their love for Elle. And I just have to say that Dixon with the cupcake was the sweetest. I love the found family vibes that always come with sports stories. Also, yay for the girl love interest not being the social media manager! This was book 2 in the River City Renegades series, and can be read as a standalone. I can’t wait to see who gets their HEA next.
Chance brings them back together once upon a time they were drawn together find comfort in each other and their mutual love of hockey until a damning article changes the direction of Dixon career and he thinks Elle is the one who sold him out but circumstances arise for them to work closely together and confront the past and discover the real culprit while discovering the depths of their growing feelings. A sweet story of second chances, wild friends and family and most importantly the love of a game
Oh, my goodness, what an amazing story! I wasn't much of a sports girl, and I really didn't read books with sports as a primary focus, but I have been loving the hockey storylines. They don't get any better than the ones I have been reading lately. Theres the focus on hockey but the players make the storylines. I love them. I can't get enough of them.
Goalie Interrupted is the story about Elle and Dixon. They meet years ago and when Dixon opens up to Elle she takes notes. But then a nasty article about Dixon almost costs him everything. Present time and Elle literally walks back into Dixon's life and he isn't too happy. He blames Elle for the article.
Will Elle and Dixon get the happily ever after? You will just have to read the book to find out. My lips are sealed.
Anne Kemp did an excellent job keeping me interested in the story. There are plenty of characters that helped bring the story together. One in particular really caught my fancy and reminded me of my mother, that would be the character, Nan. What a firecracker she is, and she keeps everyone on their toes. Especially Dixon. The characters are very likable, and the story is amazing.
I suggest you run to your nearest bookstore, library, or computer and get this book! Better yet get the series Faking the Face Off and Goalie Interrupted....you won't regret it.
Goalie Interrupted is the second book in the Rier City Renegades series. While those who have read the previous book will enjoy spending more time with this team, I do believe this could be enjoyed just fine as a standalone as well.
If I had to sum up why I loved this book in just one word, that word would be-- Nan. Okay, okay, there were many reasons that I loved this story... but Nan (Dixon's spitfire of a grandma) is one side character I won't soon be forgetting! But moving onto the romance--- Dixon and Elle together? So good! They had a complicated history together- with him blaming her for a rough patch in his career... but the chemistry between them is undeniable and I found myself loving their interactions- from the bantering to the sweeter moments. And all those kisses!? My goodness... like I said- so. much. chemistry. Hayden and Nan added another fun dynamic to the story, and I found myself smiling and laughing throughout. If you love hockey and/or workplace romance, this is definitely one you'll want to add to your TBR.
Goalie Interrupted is a closed-door romance with kisses only. It does have some minor language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
I am so happily entrenched in my hockey romance era, and this sweet romance is just what I needed! Friends to enemies to lovers, work place romance, swoony kisses, and just the right touch of drama. Throw in a sassy Nan, and you’ve got a recipe for perfection!
Loved this one so much! Such a great workplace romance! Loved Dixon & Elle together. Nan & Hadley were hoots together and such a great addition. Love these Renegade’s!
I absolutely loved this book. Dixon is a big ole teddy bear. Elle is a sassy Angel. I knew the culprit and loved the outcome. I wanted to beat up Eric myself. I love Nan and the relationship she had with Hayden. This is what I needed after all the alphahole books I have been reading. I would recommend this book for anyone that wants a sweet with some drama romance.
This book has it all, y’all! Angst, anger, healing, restoration, so. many. reasons. to. swoon, hilarious banter, red-hot chemistry, and a touching romantic arc. I was blown away!
Anne Kemp just gets better and better (not that I ever found a book of her’s that wasn’t stellar) - but wow, she has a knack for surprising the reader in the very best way, each and every time. And I am here for it!
Dixon and Elle were pure fire from page one, and I just loved discovering their history, then yes, watching them reconcile and then. just. burn. And the kisses? Three-alarm blaze! Warning: have a cup of cool water handy when you read this, just in case…
Highlightables:
- The found family that is the River City Renegades. (Here’s to hoping Campbell or Sawyer, or even Sutton gets a book next!) - The coaching staff - Pete and Cannon are hilarious. - Trevor, oh, Trevor. - Nan! Oh, oh my, Nan! She was comedic gold!! I loved her to pieces! - Hayden and her relationship with Elle. - Hello. That darn storage closet. That scene is gonna live rent-free in my head for a long time to come.
Notable Quotables:
- Every movement of his is calculated, like controlled chaos contained in a six-foot-something wall of pure determination. He’s not just defending the net; he’s guarding it like a dragon hoarding treasure, daring anyone to challenge him. When he drops into a butterfly save, his pads hit the ice with a satisfying thud, and my breath catches. Grace like that shouldn’t be possible for a man his size, and yet, he makes it look effortless. - The look on her face when she came to grips with what had happened will stay etched in my mind forever. She’d been so pale, shaking in my arms, and all I wanted to do was hold her closer to me and not let anyone else touch her. I’ve had moments where I’ve felt protective over those I love; my mother, Nan, even some of the guys on the team. But this was different. The sensation was fierce and instant, and wasn’t a feeling I could ignore. - My traitorous hand automatically slides to his chest, operating on its own accord as if someone else was pulling a string. The warmth of his body is like fire under my fingertips, and I’m okay if I’m the moth coming in because of the flame. His heart races, like mine, and I can feel the muscle beneath the soft fabric of his shirt flex as I touch him.
Don’t you wanna just dive right in? Go ahead and click, you won’t be disappointed! The redemption and found-family themes of this book are top-notch. Some of the best I’ve read in a long time. Trust me, you’ll want to join this hockey team somehow, maybe Trevor the Beaver needs a Mrs. Beaver to his mascot? Or maybe one of those crazy coaches needs an assistant? Anything to hang out in River City a little bit longer.
This funny, heart-felt, uplifting rom-com comes with my high recommendation. Don’t you dare miss it - 5 hockey puck shaped stars!
Sizzling chemistry and Swoony kisses at long last after a few near misses and remises…Elle Carter gets her dream job she’s an high level IceHockey coach . She’s where she wants to be away from all the drama and angst in a small town with plenty of charm, coaching the River City Renegades. Well look here there’s another new arrival and it’s nine other than her rival Dixon Andrews. He swore to never forgive her but she’s just entered his life not approached because she’s now his coach! Suck it up buttercup there’s nothing you can do . She’s as bossy as ever and ever so clever and beautiful and sharp…yeah we get the gist but boy you don’t seem so miffed as hoping for a kiss to me . What’s the mystery. He fell for and that was history, she was the one that got away and though he swears to this day ,he won’t sway . It does seem inevitable anyway… He has a rule not to fall for her again ,but he’s a fool for love and heavens above there he goes again. Well she has got her goalie’s number and knows he bares a grudge against her for something she didn’t even do. He hasn’t got a clue, but with those smouldering looks and attitude aplenty they’ll soon be hooking up and burning with yearning on reentry. When they come back down to earth and she’s reminded of his large girth she fondly remembers with mirth. They go way back though they weren’t together they had a great friendship mutual respect them something happened and what the heck? There was off the charts chemistry and then he was betrayed he thinks it was Elle but oh no it wasn’t so all of this time they could’ve had the best time? They both have their responsibilities to family members who are adorable and so sprightly and funny , that’s his old Nan and her niece Hayden ,BFFs the two of them are and so much fun together too Is. An awesome found family with lots of fun on the horizon it’s clear . Ode to a found family so dear and the extra shout out to the Team supreme who take the family ideals to an extreme and they’re all in it to win it together one family one goal. Super storytelling that can only be perfectly Anne Kemp ,so compelling a read that I read the book with greed , turning pages so fast ,I’d soon read it in no time at all and had a blast.
I adore books where the FMC holds a position mainly reserved for men. Anne Kemp does just this with her FMC in Goalie Interrupted. In the world of sports, both fictional and IRL, positions of power are held by men. Within this book we have a female coach within the hockey world and it is empowering to read about. And although she writes women in powerful positions, she doesn’t negate the struggles they face.
Elle is the newest defense and goalie coach for the River City Renegades. This hockey team is talented, driven, but needs help in some areas. Elle knows she’s going to have to work hard to prove to the team she deserves to be there. Another obstacle she is going to have to face is being around Dixon again. Having met three years ago, these two don’t have the best history, and present day is filled with unease and enemy type vibes. Elle isn’t going to let one man ruin what she’s worked hard for though.
Dixon blames Elle for the disastrous article that came out three years ago and almost ruined his reputation. He never thought he would see her again, but now she is a coach for his hockey team and they are constantly in the same place. As they continue to be thrown together, Dixon can’t help but start to see the girl he fell for all those years ago. Can he open his heart again and will Elle be willing to take a chance on him again, now that she is his coach?
Beyond the amazing romance between Elle and Dixon, I loved Nan! This spunky grandmother is not afraid to speak her mind to Elle and hold her accountable. I love their dynamic. Anne gives us so much goodness throughout the book too. Found family, sizzling kisses, chemistry through the roof, and deep relationships, this was a fun and enjoyable read.
As always, review any author notes before reading.

Review:
I really enjoyed this book! Dixon’s Nan was a hoot and I loved waiting to see how she’d poke or shock someone next when she came across the page! 😂 I loved how deep Elle & Dixon’s past went and how they each dealt with their own knowledge of the situations they were embroiled in. I loved how tight knit the Renegades team was and that they got together for game nights!
I can’t wait to see who might get a story next!
Summary:
Elle has worked hard to get exactly where she’s wants to be. And despite some people’s thoughts of her, it certainly wasn’t by stepping on anyone’s toes to do it. But no matter what she says or does, Elle can’t seem to get Dixon to believe that she had nothing to do with the news that broke years ago. Now they’ll have to work together as not only is Elle the new defense coach for the River City Renegades – the team Dixon is a goalie for – but she’s also the coach temporarily in charge of the goalies. He might hate her, but Elle will do everything in her power to improve the Renegades including Dixon himself. Even if it takes everything in her to put aside her own feelings for him…
Dixon was determined to never forgive Elle, but now she’s his coach and just as sharp as she always has been. It doesn’t matter if Dixon gives her the cold shoulder or not, Elle is determined and able to light a fire under him unlike anyone else. She’d make him better if he’d be willing to let her in, but that’s the last thing Dixon is willing to do…
Even if you are not a hockey fan, you can easily enjoy this wonderful romance. This book is filled to the brim with wonderful characters.
Elle Carter a/k/a Heels has just been named one of the coaches for the River City Renegades. (You will have to read the story to find out why she is nicknamed Heels.) Elle is a legend in the hockey world. She played hockey herself and made a name for herself, but she may be even more legendary as a coach. This lady is not one to be trifled with. She is excited to get started, but she knows things are not going to be easy with Dixon Andrews on the team.
Dixon Andrews cannot believe his eyes or his ears when he sees and hears that Elle is one of the new coaches. These two have a messy past which he feels almost ruined his career. This broody goalie is holding a massive grudge. Now they are being forced to work together. They need to communicate because there have been a lot of assumptions made. The barbs start flying immediately.
I loved how this romance built from enemies to lovers as they worked through their differences. I really enjoyed all of the side characters in this book as well, but I have to tell you that Dixon's grandma (Nan) completely steals the show in this book. This little lady is full of fire, sass and loves life. I laughed so hard so many times at her antics. Never underestimate the power of an elderly woman who wants to live her life to its fullest.
To sum it up, there was nothing about this book that I did not like. It was a pleasure to read it, and left me with a smile on my face.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I couldn’t put this one down! I finished it in one day. Elle and Dixon have the best tension and the enemies to lovers vibes are perfect.
Elle Carter is something of a legend, both on and off the ice. Once a great hockey player, she’s now making a name for herself as a great hockey coach. Dixon Andrews is the goalie for the River City Renegades. They met years ago at a training camp and shared some of their biggest secrets. When his secret is made public he assumes the worst since he knows Elle is the only person he’s told. She insists she never shared it, but the damage is done. Years later, with a grudge still intact, they are thrown together once again when Elle becomes the defensive and (temporary) goalie coach for the Renegades.
There are so many great moments in this story. I really enjoy the banter and watching as both characters fight the feelings they so obviously have for each other. Once they figure it out, it’s fun to watch how they handle it. Those workplace romance conundrums! Also - the side characters are top notch. Hayden’s precocious teenage-ness, Nan’s meddling granny vibes, and the entire Renegades team who can see what Elle and Dixon are so clearly fighting and trying to keep hidden from everyone else. And who doesn’t love a lowkey “who dunnit?” with the mystery of how the press got ahold of Dixon’s story.
This is a great enemies to lovers, found family, workplace romance and I cannot wait to see what is in store for the rest of the team in the River City Renegades series.
I received an arc in exchange for a honest review.
Loved this next book in the River City Renegades!!! The tension in the beginning with Elle and Dixon was thick but quickly turned into fast growing feelings that they couldn’t contain. And I absolutely love the arguments turned make-out/kissing sessions in books and Anne wrote an epic one!!!!!
Nan was awesome!!! I loved her character soo much!! She was cheeky and blunt and cared a lot about Dixon and her and Hayden were soo cute together. Hayden was such a supportive niece to Elle and their relationship was tight knit and they made things work.
The brotherhood is what I love about these books too! Dixon and his teammates bantering and teasing and looking out for each other too. I love seeing that dynamic in these stories because I think it’s important for people to realize we need each other.
The coaches were pretty awesome too. They supported Elle and Sutton is such an awesome boss I want to work for her!
The kisses were “chefs kiss” and 🔥.
Dixon and Elle had to work through their hurts and the misunderstanding and assumptions that were made in their past to see the truth and navigate all the feelings and things that came with it. And we can’t forget the need to punch that stupid ex right after Dixon who has first dibs 🤣. No one should ever be allowed to make a woman feel like that.
I love how it was tension building but happened at a beautiful pace that left you turning the page but didn’t hold you in suspense for too long. 🤭🤭. So go preorder now!!!!!!
Goalie, Interrupted by Anne Kemp is a closed door hockey romcom that includes tropes like enemies to lovers, secret relationship, and found family. This is the second book in the River City Renegades series.
Elle knew becoming his coach was going to be difficult. Dixon still blames her for something she didn’t do. Regardless, she finds she can’t stop thinking about him, no matter how professional she tries to be.
Dixon initially wants nothing to do with her, but he can’t keep his eyes off of the beautiful woman. When he is forced to work closely with her, his resolve begins to fade. What starts as tension between two former friends turned enemies slowly fades as the chemistry and attraction build.
I loved the slow burn between these strong, lovable characters. She is an accomplished coach and very good at what she does. He has a caring side to complement his tough goalie skills. The side characters, Dixon’s Nan and Elle’s niece, add depth to the main characters and are delightful in their own right. Add to the story’s romance the mystery of what really happened to cause the strain between them, and you won’t be able to put the book down.
My favorite quotation: Elle “Look, we’re not getting anywhere with this. We need to fix whatever this is between us if we’re going to get along.” Dixon “Fine. Let’s fix it.” Elle “Okay.” Dixon “Any suggestions?” Elle “I have ideas.” …before I can stop myself, I’m up on my tiptoes and pressing my lips to his.
Goalie Interrupted by Anne Kemp is an enemies-to-lovers hockey rom com that will make you smile, laugh, and pump your fist up in the air! (Mine was in celebration, but if your fist pumps up directed at a certain individual towards the end…no judgement here!)
Dixon and Elle. What a pair! Dixon is fascinating. He is super focused on his hockey career…but also is a caretake for his eccentric Nan. Elle is breaking barriers in a career dominated by men. Don’t promote her just because she is a woman though – Elle has a distinguished career behind her as both a player and a coach.
Elle is excited for the opportunity to coach the defensive line for the River City Renegades even though it means facing Dixon again. Elle doesn’t know if she is ready for him again…not after what happened…
Things I enjoyed: Dual POV Locker Room “Heels Carter” Parking lot “But maybe we needed to get messy” Storage closet Text messages Game. Night. Andrews Five – Found family “That’s my girl.” The ending!
I really enjoyed this book! There are so many layers to peel back with Dixon and Elle, and each layer gave a new surprise and new reason to cheer for them. I love the agony that is portrayed from Elle’s perspective as a coach – of knowing what to say and how to say it to motive and also teach. I also love Dixon’s perspective as a player receiving correction and how he responds to it. The author does a fantastic job with this forbidden relationship romance, including the sweet tension, and then letting the sparks fly with swoony kisses! I can’t wait for more!
This is book 2 of the River City Renegades series but can be read as a standalone.
CW: kisses only, two mild swear words (there are some reviews that state the author has a lot of swearing in this book, however the author has updated the story to only include two)
Is a sweet second chance, enemies to lovers, secret relationship, work place, found family, hockey romcom with no cliffhanger. Some of the lines I really like --- Complicated doesn’t mean impossible. --- “What is that horrific odor that is assaulting my senses?” --- “You need to understand that I am fine. As in f-i-n-e fine. I’m not losing it,” --- ‘Don’t let the door hit ya, where the good Lord split ya.’ --- “Respect is what’s earned, and with it comes trust." --- “I’ll reserve the urge to carry you to the benches for another time.” --- "Come alone or bring your partners, girlfriends, kids or your Nan.” --- --- “I’m not saying it won’t be tough, but you’re tougher,” --- “To breaking barriers, taking risks, and proving that anything’s possible when you’ve got the drive to back it up.” --- Here for the Heels! Welcome Coach Carter! Girls Rule, Boys Drool! --- You stand up and do what you need to do when it comes to family. --- --- It’s not just about hockey with us; it’s about showing up for each other, no matter what. --- “You’ve got this. Don’t focus on the game, be in it. Everything you need is already in you.” --- Who gave the info to the reporter that messed up Dixon's life? What's Sutton up to? What's Nan up to? What's Eric up to? I loved Elle and Dixon's story and I'm sure you will too. I've loved everyone of her books that I've read and can't wait to read her next book.
Anne Kemp always writes fun and entertaining rom com stories! This series just keeps getting better. I loved Elle and Dixon's story! The characters were well written and enjoyable. I was hooked from the beginning and had a blast through the entire book. I can't wait for the next book.
Elle is the the new coach for The River City Renegades and it she can't wait to get started. Elle is one of those characters you want to be. She is a hard working woman an has achieved so much.
Dixon is the goalie on the River City Renegades and loves his Nan. When Dixon finds out Elle is the new coach he's not to happy. Elle and Dixon have a past. These two have a lot to figure out so they can get along for the sake of the team.
You will have so much fun getting to know Nan! Dixon's Nan will have you laughing so hard. I would love to be as awesome as her when I get to her age. Hayden is Elle's niece and she is BBF's with Nan and that was one unexpected friendship but I loved it so much! I could totally relate to Hayden. I would rather hang out with my grandparents or great grandparents vs people my age. I loved Dixon and Elle so much. These two will have so many sweet moments, LOL moments, and will leave you with a wonderful ending. If you want a fun and lovable book then this book is for you! I highly recommend this book!
Thank you Anne Kemp for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.
This book was so cute! I loved both Elle and Dixon, along with Nan and Hayden along with the guys on his team. I do hope there's more from the guys on his team but who knows? Elle is a baddie. She was the first woman coach in the NHL and holds records that no man or woman has broke. She knows her way on the ice, let's just say that. Her and Dixon have a history already and things didn't exactly end well. There's still some tension between them. Along with being a baddie in the hockey world, she is also raising her teenage niece, who's such a great kid and working her way into the hockey world. Not all teenage girls are like Hayden, she is nice and considerate for one and gets along with Nan beautifully and does her own thing. I really liked Elle and Hayden and the relationship that they had. It was so nice to see. Dixon had his dreams fall into place. He was playing in the NHL and living the dream and then it all came crashing down. He's still a good goalie on a good team and working his way back to the NHL. He's got his hands full with Nan and hockey. Having Elle join the team and working with him have stirred all those feelings back up. He's afraid to get close to her but after things are cleared up and they get closer, she's everything he wants. This book has some swoonworthy moments, some hilarious ones, especially with Nan involved and some heartfelt ones as well. This book was a quick read and one that was so good!!
This was a good read, slow burn and sweet. Dixon and Elle had met a few years before, during a hockey skills camp. They had formed a friendship, and he confided in her about some of the mental health issues he was going through. When those issues were broadcast in the media and his team released him to the lower league, Dixon blamed Elle. She was the only person he had told. Even though she swore she hadn't said a word to anyone. And they hadn't spoken since. Now Elle was a coach. Dixon's coach. Neither of them were really comfortable with the situation, but they had to make it work. But despite the animosity, neither of them could deny a tension that had nothing to do with hating each other. The two do find their way to working together, though there are arguments along the way. Elle knows how seriously Dixon takes his job, and he hates how she knows just how to push him to get him to work even harder. Even when he knows she's right. Expect lots of banter - between Elle and Dixon, but also with teammates and family. And OMG - Dixon's Nan takes the cake! She's hilarious and drives him crazy, but she's just perfect! This was a fun friends to enemies to lovers story, with a little drama, a jerk ex who just won't go away, and a bunch of big, crazy hockey players who are the best kind of family.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Books like this make me wonder if hockey is more wonderful than I thought. The banter, the character of the people in the story, the camaraderie, the friendships/family, the way it all comes together... There is so much I enjoyed about this story and the people within it that I wish life were really this wonderful. It is uplifting, hopeful, and redeeming. Life changes as characters move on with their lives but that past is always hanging out. Elle and Dixon take that past by the puck, so to speak, and deal with it so they can move forward. Nan (Dixon's nana) is just the colorful character - and I mean that literally - that the story needed. She says it like it is, adds her own flair to everything, and is just the comic relief at the exact right time.
This story is good. It will propel you onward as soon as you read that first sentence. I had to put it down during the read several times (we were at a leadership convention) and my mind kept wondering back to the story and when I would have a bit of downtime so I could sneak up to the room to keep on reading. Whether you are a hockey fan, a rom-com fan, or just a fan of a good story that is joy to read, this one needs to be on your list.
I received an ebook ARC of this story from the author. All opinions are my own.
Hockey romance fans, this one’s for you! Goalie, Interrupted is the kind of story that reminds me why I love sports romcoms—full of tension, charm, and heart.
Elle Carter is the new defense coach for the River City Renegades, and she’s more than ready for the challenge—except for one problem: the goalie with a grudge. Dixon Andrews isn’t just broody and maddeningly attractive (hello, jawline), he’s also stuck in the past… and Elle’s right at the center of it. Their dynamic? Enemies to lovers, fueled by workplace tension, secret feelings, and undeniable chemistry.
I loved how this story explored second chances—not just in love, but in identity, career, and community. Dixon and Elle’s relationship evolves through sarcastic banter, simmering tension, and slowly building trust. And those kisses? So worth the wait.
Now let’s talk about the real MVP: Nan. Dixon’s fiery grandma had me laughing out loud and totally warmed my heart. Her blunt one-liners and no-nonsense attitude stole every scene she was in. Add in Hayden, Elle’s niece who she’s taken in, and their sweet connection added so much emotional depth to the story. Honestly? I’d read a whole spin-off just about Nan and Hayden and the antics they’d get up to together.
This is book two in the River City Renegades series, but it reads beautifully as a standalone. It’s a closed-door romance (kisses only), with a little language, lots of laughs, and a deeply satisfying ending—yes, I’m still thinking about that cupcake scene.
Goalie, Interrupted is the perfect mix of snark and swoon, with a standout heroine, lovable side characters, and all the heart you want in a sports romance.
I have read over half a dozen hockey romcoms in 2025 alone. Needless to say, I am well versed with the sub-genre. While all of the books have been enjoyable, it is common for them to blend together; that is until Anne Kemp’s, Goalie Interrupted.
Anne Kemp herself is no stranger to sports romances (she has written several football/ hockey romcoms throughout her career). However, with her latest book, Goalie Interrupted, she sets herself apart by choosing to highlight females in a male dominant world. This book features women as owners (Sutton), coaches (Elle), aspiring players (Hayden), and fans (Nan) of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Seeing women at the forefront of this book is truly revolutionary! Until very recently, hockey has been viewed as a male dominated sport. While women have played, they were a marginalized group. However, with the rise in the sport’s popularity there has been an uptick of female participation. Despite this being the case, I have yet to read a hockey romcom that highlights this achievement.
This book is truly a standout read! I loved the female empowerment Kemp showcased while still honoring the men who helped make the sport what it is today. I look forward to continuing on with the River City Renegades Series for as long as Kemp is willing to write it.
Special thanks to Red Bird Publishing and Anne Kemp for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I truly enjoyed this second chance, enemies to lovers, workplace sports romance. The banter is sharp and snappy, with a certain authenticity and a dry wit. Elle is great navigating her role as a coach in a totally male-dominated sport. She earns the respect of the team with her obvious love of the game, and successfully banters with them without sacrificing her essential femininity. In addition to navigating the careful balance of workplace ethics, I liked the way the main characters dealt with their individual family responsibilities -- Eli with his resident nana, and Elle with guardianship of her niece. The scenes with Nan and Hayden together were just too cute for words. I loved the way the Renegades hockey team are really leaning into the importance of family in all its different dimensions. It's a great way to keep the player profiles family friendly.
I received an advance beta copy of this story directly from the author and voluntarily chose to share my review.
Wow! Anne Kemp has done it again with another incredibly sweet and clean hockey romance.
I don’t know how she manages to keep it clean but still make it sizzle with tension, but she does! Dixon and Elle’s story was absolutely amazing.
This book is a wonderful take on the enemies to lovers trope. Dixon (the goalie of the River City Renegades) and Elle have great chemistry between them.
The side characters were well written and really added to the story. Nan (Dixon’s grandmother) was an absolute hoot! I thoroughly enjoyed reading about her antics.
I personally wish there had been a few more mentions of Ollie and Anna from the first book in the series but that’s just me being selfish as I loved their story and wanted to hear more about them. This book truly is a stand alone and you don’t have to read the first book to enjoy this one. However, do yourself a favor and go read it as well because it’s just as swoony as this one.
If you’re into clean yet sizzling with chemistry romance, then read this one. You won’t be disappointed!
Goalie Interrupted is the second book in the River City Renegades Sweet Romcom Series. This book could definitely be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the first book first to meet the team! If you love the tropes enemies to lovers, found family, forbidden romance, be sure to check out this book!
Elle is the new coach for the River City Renegades. Dixon is the goalie for the team. They met at a training camp years ago and shared some big secrets which lead to him blaming her for a rough patch in his career. When Elle is hired as the new defensive coach and temporary goalie coach, their complicated history makes coaching him…well…more complicated! As they work through their rough past and the truth is revealed, will they be willing to break all the rules for love?
The banter between these two is great! While Elle and Dixon had a rough start, they were able to work through their past and the chemistry between these two is spot on and the kisses will make you swoon! I loved watching them try to sneak around thinking no one would pick up on their stollen glances and secret smiles! Dixon was just the sweetest with Elle’s niece, Hayden. He was so thoughtful when he brought the cupcake. All the tears! And ohhh Dixon’s grandmother, Nan, was just hilarious. She had me laughing out loud!
If you love hockey romance with enemies to lovers and forbidden workplace romance vibes, be sure to check out this book!! You won’t regret it!
Thank you to the author for the copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Once again we are with the Renegades hockey team. This time we get to see their goalie, Dixon, meet his match in new Defensive line coach, Elle. These two were so great to read about! Their chemistry was off the charts! To say Dixon wasn't happy to see Elle again after he believed she was the cause of a bad press article that tanked his NHL career, would be putting it very mildly. But Elle could stand up against anyone. She was an amazing hockey player herself before turning to coaching. She's use to dealing with attitudes. She is strong and confident, knows her Hockey, and has a soft side for her niece, Hayden. She wants to do what's right always and fights for the people she cares about. Dixon is amazing. He takes care of his Nan, who is a riot! I loved the bond he has with her and with his teammates. He sees the strength in Elle and respects her for it. These two were so great to watch. Anne Kemp is one of my favorite authors and she doesn't disappoint in this book either. I dove right into this world and didn't want to leave it. I was just sad it was over.
