Randy Pope has created a blueprint for pastors and church planters with The Intentional Church . Such an organization must model a dynamic spirit of worship and servanthood that will cause it to become a magnet for people needing help. Part of the blueprint involves having a God-honoring purpose, a faith-oriented commitment, a well-defined mission, biblically-based job descriptions, and more. A relevant resource for pastors and lay persons.
I’ve been reading this off and on for a while. Randy Pope’s ministry from and through Perimeter Church has impacted me from a distance since college. I’ve had the privilege of spending some time with him too. I’m nothing like him, but I do pray I can have an ounce of his love and focus for God’s kingdom.
The first mistake you will make in reading this book is if you think it is an automatic, plug and play system to grow your church. This book is a cohesive summary of how he has conducted his focused, intentional ministry for over 4 decades.
The second mistake you will make in reading this book if you don’t engage in the prayerful and deliberative contextualization for the local congregation’s worship, discipleship, and mission to be God honoring and purposed.
Don’t copy/paste. But do absorb and live likewise.
This book was transformative for me in how I see church life. His thoughts about church being both home and mission stirred up lots of ideas and prayers for our church. I did want more from the book. In some ways it was a teaser...just to get you started really thinking on things.
It's not prayer, living for the glory of God, exceptional preaching, or correct theology that enable churches to reap the harvest. It is failure to have an effective ministry plan. And despite the several good things about this book, this is what came back over and over again.
Be aware, this is an updated version of the Prevailing Church. I bought it after finishing the Prevailing Church and wasn't aware that they simply changed the title. I will read it still because I would like to read Pope's updates, and I thought Prevailing Church was quite helpful.
