This book will take you to the jungle, where an old woman is waiting to share secrets of Matriarchy, Mystery, and Mythology.

🌳 INSIGHT: Set in the mythical Dandakaranya forest, the book reimagines a world where matriarchy thrived, challenging the patriarchal narratives that dominate history. When Samira, a filmmaker, sets out to explore its depths, she stumbles upon a forgotten past that changes her perspective on power, survival, and history.

🌳 REVIEW: Shiwani Kumar blends myth and reality beautifully, bringing the jungle to life with vivid descriptions. The novel sheds light on an alternate history where women held authority, making it both refreshing and significant.

One of its biggest strengths is its exploration of matriarchy. Samira’s journey feels personal and thought-provoking, and the characters are strong and multi-dimensional. The layers of myth and history - through hell, heaven and earth, highlight how narratives are shaped by those in power.

The writing is poetic at times, adding depth to the themes. However, certain sections are slow-paced due to detailed descriptions, which might challenge readers who prefer a fast-moving plot.

Overall, Dandakaranya is a fascinating read that challenges the way we view history and gender roles.

🌳 STRENGTHS:
1. A unique and bold take on history and mythology.
2. Beautifully written with poetic and thought-provoking language.
3. Strong, well-developed female characters.

🌳 WEAKNESSES:
1. Some parts feel slow due to heavy descriptions.
2. Certain themes are complex, making the narrative slightly dense.

🌳 TARGET READERS:
18+, especially those interested in historical fiction, mythology, and feminist narratives.

🌳 GENRE: Historical Fiction / Mythological Literature

🌳 RATING: 4.3/5

Misleading book promotion. I fell in that trap. it wasn't what I thought it'd be. too confusing narration at times. the writing style is immature. and there were so many so many misplaced words. even two starts is a lot. The author needs to improve her writing a lot.

🍀Book- Dandakaranya - The Jungle of Matriarchy
🍀 Author- Shiwani Kumar

🍀 Between the pages -
“The time passed by from twilight to day to dusk scenes faded by.
But someone was still in action, that lady in green sari picked that man on her shoulders and walked by the dense forest. That man and her so-called son were motionless on her shoulders. She peeped back to check-in a few intervals and then she reached a wrecked deep blue colour police van. She took out the bunch of keys, from her side of the blouse. She opened the back door of the van, while there were nine other men of several ages locked to the seats.”

🍀 Review - Set against the backdrop of the dense forests of Dandakaranya in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, this book initially feels like a mythology-inspired tale filled with folklore, mystery, and tribal heritage. However, as the story unfolds, and you realise it to be much deeper and thought-provoking .

At first, the narrative may feel slightly confusing, making readers wonder about the author’s true intention. But gradually, the layers begin to unfold, and the story emerges as a powerful commentary on women’s rights, patriarchy, and the constant oppression faced by women in society.

➡️ “Love is like a drug and breaking of heart is the result. However you try to stop using that drug, it seeps you more deeply every time and leaves you heartbroken more than before. After that, a time comes when this drug swallows you completely and leaves a thrash behind in the form of your body.”

The book strongly questions the differences created between men and women and highlights how women are often denied their identity, freedom, and voice.

The characters feel raw and realistic, while the haunting atmosphere of the forest adds depth to the storytelling.

There are several moments in the book that might disturb you but that is exactly where the novel succeeds. It fearlessly portrays the courage, resilience, survival, and inner strength of women.

What makes the book even more beautiful is its writing style. Every chapter begins and ends with meaningful quotes or poetic lines that perfectly capture the essence of the chapter and leave a lasting impact on the reader.

Overall, this is not just a story but a bold and powerful perspective on womanhood, survival, and matriarchy. Deeply emotional, haunting, and thought-provoking.

“𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒉, 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍 𝒊𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅. 𝑹𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒕𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 "

Folklore, tribal tales, feminism and history that changes from perception to perception— that's how “Dandakaranya : the jungle of matriarchy " By Shiwani Kumar felt like for me.
The story follows a vlogger Samira as she steps into Dandakaranya- A jungle in the depths of Chhattisgarh. As she moves through it she comes across an old lady who seems strangely educated for a mere old villager and Soon Samira is taken into the realm of mystery, myths and history where matriarchy plays a powerful role .... And learn lesson that might stay in her heart forever.

Dandakaranya felt very unique in concept to me. It's beginning is strong with shrouded mystery and Samira's introduction. Yet it defers from other books through its vivid storytelling and poetic writing style. I loved the character of Amma — a mysterious figure that plays the center of the whole book. And the jungle as well, it feels like a world lost to time and generation.

“𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 ".

The story and plot is divided into a very unique concept of Heaven, Hell and Earth. It's like using poetic hints while also telling a part of story - Each chapter is different with plays a different part of bigger picture in story. It might feel confusing at start but when I kept reading slowly it started making sense and writing depth also grew on me. Another thing that sets this book apart from others is its enigmatic words and mysterious vibe.

" 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒉𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔 ".

It feels thought-provoking and deep . Overall, if you love books that blend mythical vibe, Ancient wisdom, mystery and feminism, then this is definitely a book worth picking. Also the writing is lyrical and simple to read as well. Go for it if you love women centric adventure and folklore.

"कहानी कभी लिखी न गई
गुनाह पर उँगली उठाई न गई।
संकेत बदलते रहे समय के संग
जंगल की जुबान समझी न गई।
यही तो मतलब था उसका,
जब आखिरी कार उसने कहा।"

What pulled me towards this story instantly was the connection to the forest of Shri Ram’s vanvaas. Initially, I genuinely thought this would turn into some sort of direct retelling connected to the Ramayana, but surprisingly, it takes a completely different route. Instead of recreating the original tale, it uses the idea and atmosphere of Dandakaranya to explore something far more reflective and relevant to the current era.

The writing style is engaging right from the beginning. There is a strong metaphorical layer throughout the narrative, especially with the forest itself. Every path, every encounter, and every strange moment inside the jungle almost feels symbolic of the choices we make in life and the lessons attached to them. I actually enjoyed that aspect a lot because it made the story feel deeper without becoming difficult to follow.

The protagonist us from a modern age so every question, every curiosity has that perspective, which helps balance the mythological and mysterious atmosphere surrounding the forest. The contrast between ancient echoes and present-day perspectives worked really well for me.

One of my favourite parts was the small quotes and lines placed at the beginning of chapters. Many of them genuinely stayed with me longer than expected and added another thoughtful layer to the reading experience.

"धोखा भी एक टेढी लकीर है,
पिए हुए घूँट-सा तन-मन थरथरता है,
उसे आदत मत बनते देना कभी
वरना रिश्तों का पूरा समाज डूब जाता है।"

The book feels mysterious, reflective, and metaphorical all at once while still remaining accessible and easy to get immersed in.

"This is not only a jungle of punishment; it is also the jungle of these deadly creatures."

- Shiwani Kumar, Dandakaranya

’Dandakaranya’ is a story where women are treated badly by their male counterparts. The book is set against the backdrop of three main worlds i.e. Hell, Heaven, and Earth.

The read starts with an intriguing scene where a vlogger, Samira has entered the perilous forest of Dandakaranya and encounters a strange woman who begins to narrate stories.

"It's not about where you live, what you do. It's all about what you want. Living in a deep jungle can't curtail my enthusiasm for learning.”

Each world (Hell, Heaven, Earth) is populated with strange beings that can go to any extent of cementing their lives. The characters are unlikeable to say the least, but that's where Kumar succeeds at. The story is a blend of etymology of Dandakaranya, mystery, a neglected forest that whispers secrets of its own and folklore of Chattisgarh. The writing is layered and poetic that gives a much needed depth to the narrative. The book is hauntingly atmospheric weaving dread, myth, and mystery into a narrative that feels both unsettling and impossible to put down.

”This is not just a tale of mystery but it also mirrors the strength within us.”

Overall ’Dandakaranya’ isn't a book that you rush through but its thought-provoking nature makes you sit and contemplate how narratives are propelled by those in power. It's unsettling at parts but that's were it succeeds.

I went into Dandakaranya: The Jungle of Matriarchy expecting a mysterious jungle story, but it turned out to be much more layered and thought-provoking than I expected

Shiwani Kumar’s writing is very descriptive in a way that makes the jungle feel alive. The atmosphere, forgotten histories, whispers of power, and the mix of myth with reality create such an immersive reading experience. At times it genuinely feels like the forest is silently watching everything unfold.

The book does take time to get used to because there’s a lot happening in the beginning. I was definitely confused at first, but slowly the pieces started connecting and by the end, it all made sense and delivered really well. It’s one of those books you slowly settle into instead of rushing through.

One of the strongest parts of the novel for me was its exploration of matriarchy and power. The idea of an alternate history where women held authority felt refreshing and different. The book is bold with its commentary and some lines genuinely stay with you after reading.

“These men sadly have no cure.”

“Mirror has a section,
That keeps away the reflection,
The reflection meets with soul,
While the soul bruises growl....”

“Why to Murder, Men are already so weak. They got a penis and they think they own this world but the irony is they lack in everything else.”

The writing can feel symbolic and intense at times, but that’s also what makes the book memorable. If you enjoy atmospheric stories with mythology, mystery, feminism, and hidden histories, this is definitely an interesting read to experience.

Holy shit! This book was sooo good. When I picked up Dandakaranya, I expected a mythology-inspired story, but it turned out to be much more layered than that. The atmosphere pf the book was sooooo eerie, it pulled me in right from the start abd kept me hooked till the end. The author did an amazing job there. I genuinely liked how the story blended history, myth, and adventure.

The best that I liked about the book was the fact that even it being mythological themed it expresses it message about encouraging matriarchy and talks about the issues of women being oppressed and stripped off their rights. Samaira has been a wonderful character to take this journey along with. So yeah this was a good one.

Dandakaranya doesn’t just tell a story, it prowls. There’s a certain untamed cadence to the writing, where lines like “The forest and darkness complemented each other, while the eyes of the animals were shining like stars in the sky” pull you into a landscape that feels both watchful and alive.

The narrative leans into emotional hardening and quiet defiance, captured strikingly in “You become so tough that pain gets scared of you, while you become yours forever.” It’s this inner metamorphosis that gives the book its sharpest edge.

And then, with a line like “Who is the lucky one this time”, the tone flickers almost ominous, adding an undercurrent of unpredictability.

Overall, a good and intriguing read.

Review of Dandakaranya

Crazy imagination! But I’d recommend reading it only if you can finish it in one go—because otherwise, like in my case, the impact gets diluted.

The book is divided into three parts—Earth, Hell, and Heaven. And none of them appear the way we usually imagine them. That’s where the writer’s creativity truly shines. Some of her lines really pierced through me.

That said, I’d call it good but not great. At times, I felt disconnected, which was unexpected from such a short book (just around 150 pages).

Still, reading experiences differ from person to person. And there’s only one way to know—pick it up and see how it lands for you.

This book was truly unique and refreshingly different. It has thrill, suspense, and a touch of confusion—all in a good way. It isn’t very long, so most people can easily binge-read it, not just because of its length but because of the constant thrill and the curiosity to know where the story is heading.

Throughout the book, you’ll keep guessing different endings and possible climaxes, creating your own versions of the story in your head. I won’t give away any spoilers, but I genuinely feel everyone should read this once.

P.S. Don’t skip the prologue.

The story is decent but the writing is quite poor.
This book literally ragebaited me for like 80% of the book, but in the last 3 chapters it made a bit more sense.
Overall a decent read, but the writing could've been better. (Or so I think).
