At a mall in Nairobi, a housewife follows the woman her husband has been cheating with, while gripping a knife. In Kangemi, congregants worship, but something sinister is brewing behind the praise. A girl walks along Moi Avenue, with the eerie feeling of being followed by her ex-lover. At the heart of these stories is something we all seek: love. How far will we go for it before we realize we may be approaching it the wrong way, or searching for it in the wrong place?
The stories in Imperfect Match are told in gripping, fast-paced prose—sometimes funny, sometimes sad—full of twists and turns. They hold up a mirror to our weaknesses, our strengths, and our resolve to keep moving forward despite it all.
Kariuki Kimuyu is a writer based in Nairobi, where he is currently working on his fifth book. Kesho & Malkia. When he is not whacking away at the keyboard, you can find him taking long walks or stopping to buy anything consumable by the roadside.
This was my first time reading a book by Kimuyu, and Imperfect Match left a strong impression on me. The collection brings together stories that explore relationships in their imperfect, sometimes painful forms.
Most of the stories in the book are fictional and are well written with the Cat Woman and Kibe stories standing out. However, as a first-time reader of Kimuyu’s work, I did feel a slight disconnect in some of the fictional narratives. While the writing was solid, a few stories didn’t fully pull me in as much as I expected.
The final story, however, is real, not fictional, and it was the hardest to read. The account of eight years of abuse was devastating and deeply confronting. I kept asking myself how one person can endure so much for so long. Its raw honesty made it far more intense than the fictional pieces and gave the book a powerful, unsettling ending.
Overall, Kimuyu shows courage in telling both imagined and real stories without romanticizing pain. Despite moments of disconnect in the fictional stories, Imperfect Match is a meaningful and brave read especially for a first encounter with the author’s work.
Oooh, what a book. A page-turner that keeps you hooked from start to finish consisting of beautifully written stories. What makes this collection stand out is its emotional diversity. Every story evokes a different response—some invite empathy, others provoke thought, and others leave a lingering sense of heaviness or hope. The constant shift in emotion kept the reading experience engaging and meaningful, allowing each story to leave its own distinct imprint without overshadowing the others. Surviving Henry for me was the one story that stayed with me in a way I wasn’t prepared for, leaving a quiet weight on my heart long after I turned the page. This is a great pick if you enjoy short stories that make you pause, reflect, and see pieces of real life within the pages.
This book by Kariuki Kimuyu is emotionally heavy, disturbing, and deeply thought-provoking. Through short narratives, it explores the darker side of love, marriage, obsession, betrayal, addiction, and abuse with brutal honesty. Each story reveals how fragile relationships can be, and how easily people can lose themselves in toxic situations. Some stories stood out more than others. Eight Years of Toxic Love is deeply disturbing, not just because of the abuse, but because of how real it feels. It made me angry—furious at the man for his cruelty, manipulation, and violence. But it also left me frustrated with the woman, watching her remain in a situation that clearly endangered her. Page after page, the abuse escalates, and as a reader, you feel helpless, wanting her to escape, to choose herself, to survive. By the end, the story stops being about judgment and becomes about understanding. It reveals how abuse doesn’t just imprison the body—it imprisons the mind. Imperfect Match portrays Debra’s marriage to Joshua slowly decays under the weight of boredom and emotional distance. In a desperate attempt to save their relationship, she introduces Lucy into their intimacy, hoping to revive their connection. Instead, she unknowingly invites betrayal. Lucy and Joshua begin an affair behind her back, turning Debra’s sacrifice into her deepest humiliation. In a shocking and tragic climax, Lucy kills Joshua in Debra’s presence. Though Lucy is found not guilty, she is left haunted by the murder and consumed by guilt, eventually reaching a point where she contemplates ending her own life. The story is a painful reminder that desperation can lead people to decisions they can never undo. Mama Kibe in A Wedding Without a Groom is the embodiment of control, a mother determined to dictate her son’s life, including his engagement to Winnie, a materialistic woman she believes is suitable. But Kibe, trapped between obedience and his own desires, finds comfort in the arms of Njoki, the housemaid. When he is discovered in bed with her by his in-laws, the illusion collapses. Unable to face the shame and confrontation, he makes a cowardly but revealing choice—he disappears on his own wedding day. The story exposes the suffocating weight of parental control and the consequences of living a life that isn’t truly yours. Wanja’s obsession with Miriam, her husband’s therapist, spirals into a dark and disturbing fixation. Her jealousy and emotional instability consume her judgment until she commits the unthinkable—killing her own husband. The consequences are swift and unforgiving, landing her in prison. Her Obsession is a chilling exploration of obsession, insecurity, and how unchecked emotions can destroy lives. It shows how love, when mixed with possessiveness and paranoia, becomes something dangerous and irreversible. Proverb 31 Woman had potential, but it was unnecessarily long and failed to maintain engagement. The pacing dragged, and the message, though meaningful, was diluted by excessive detail. Instead of drawing the reader in, it tested patience. A stronger, more concise narrative would have made its impact more powerful. Highly recommended for readers who appreciate raw, realistic, and emotionally intense stories.

This book is beautifully written and full of unexpected turns! I didn’t see those endings coming — the twists hit in the best (and most painful) way. That last story broke me. I’m still thinking about her. Wishing her love and light. 🥺💔
