Caitlin Crews

Caitlin Crews discovered her first romance novel at the age of twelve, in a bargain bin at the local five and dime. It involved swashbuckling pirates, grand adventures, a heroine with rustling skirts and a mind of her own, and a seriously mouthwatering and masterful hero. The book (the title of which remains lost in the mists of time) made a serious impression. Caitlin was immediately smitten with romances and romance heroes, to the detriment of her middle school social life. And so began her life-long love affair with romance novels, many of which she insists on keeping near her at all times, thus creating a fire hazard of love wherever she lives.

Caitlin has made her home in places as far-flung as York, England and Atlanta, Georgia. She was raised near New York City, and fell in love with London on her first visit when she was a teenager. She has backpacked in Zimbabwe, been on safari in Botswana, and visited tiny villages in Namibia. She has, while visiting the place in question, declared her intention to live in Prague, Dublin, Paris, Athens, Nice, the Greek Islands, Rome, Venice, and/or any of the Hawaiian islands. Writing about exotic places seems like the next best thing to actually moving there.

She currently lives in Oregon with her animator/comic book artist husband and their menagerie of ridiculous animals.

The first half of the book was very well done and thought it was a five star.

But the second half was lacking, it wasn't very realistic in the hero's character development and the conclusion of how he came to his epiphany moment was stretching it to the ninth degree. And his reveal of his feelings was another issue, again really pushing it here HP. The timeline of all he did, not possible at all. I know this is Harlequin Presents but even that was a stretch, Transforming a castle in like 12 hours in the middle of night night in a small town/village. Nope not realistic at all. Plus his rebirth of cooking too. Just too many issues in the end that took away from the first half.

The Christmas feel was very real in this story thought. I thought CC did a excellent job of making you feel like you were very present in those scenes. Castle, snow, caroling and the entire Christmas feeling.

I did like both the hero and heroine and their love story. Just had issues with the development of the hero and his actions towards the end would.

But one area CC did not disappoint is epilogue. I will continue to give her all the kudos she deserves with her epilogues, they are some of the best.

4 solid stars

I actually liked this one more than the previous HQ I read by Crews “Forbidden Greek Mistress”. The romance was more believable between the main couple. I also liked the fmc more, she had more of a back bone than the one in FGM. The plot moved a bit faster too. The MMC was equal parts a b@stard, but caring when it counted. Whereas the MMC in FGM felt too cold and brutish.

The Christmas theme wasn’t over done either and was more of a back drop to the romance which I appreciated. It didn’t come off campy or heavy handed. I’m not a big fan of holiday themed books usually, the holiday theme usually over takes the plot.

I’ll definitely be reading more of Crews books in the future. Especially, the one coming out in December. I love a good mafioso kidnap plot 🥰

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Readability: 📖📖📖📖 (it felt pretty short)
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡(they kind of drive right in, after the backstory drops)
Romance: 💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑 (It’s pretty short)
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥
Humor: Just a touch
Perspective: third person from heroine
More character focused or plot focused? character
How did the speed of the story feel? slow to medium
When mains are first on page together: They are on page at the end of chapter 1, but don’t really interact until middle of chapter 2 (there’s a lot of remembering life from both characters)
Cliffhanger: No, this ends with a happily ever after
Epilogue: Not listed as such but there’s a wrap up chapter that covers the next few years
Format: listened to an advanced reader copy through NetGalley in audiobook form
Why I chose this book: I needed more audiobooks and was looking for holiday reads!
Mains: Antonluca Aniello and Hannah Hansen – This is a M/F relationship between a cishet hero and heroine
(Descriptions found at end of my review)

Should I read in order?
This stands alone.

Basic plot:
Hannah escapes her American life after being fired from her job – only to find herself pregnant and in Italy. She forms a life there, but a few years later the hotel she works at is sold to no one other than her one night stand.

Give this a try if you want:
- contemporary romance
- Italy setting
- holiday romance
- American heroine – she’s from Nebraska / Italian hero pairing
- single mother heroine – she has a young son (I think he’s 2-3?)
- chef hero
- hotel manager heroine
- secret baby – she had a baby from a one night stand with the hero and they never reconnected
- size difference – he’s 6’3” and if she wears heals she only has to tilt her head a bit to look him in the face
- second chance
- billionaire hero
- lighter steam – there’s about 3 scenes, but they are definitely on the short side

Ages:
- I didn’t catch either

First line:
Hannah Hansen made her way into work one morning that December fairly bursting with the holiday spirit.

My thoughts:
I liked the set up for this one, even though secret baby and second chance isn’t usually my thing. I liked the idea of a one night stand and coming back to each other years later.

But I did find parts of this story frustrating. It’s definitely slow feeling because there’s a lot of telling instead of showing – like a lot of back story recap. And being second chance, I think I prefer the recap instead of just diving in without knowing their backstory but still I was very ready for some interaction in this one, it felt like it was taking forever. That was my struggle in this story was it felt like the story itself was quite short and so much was remembering events and reflecting on things. There was also a number of just wild to me coincidences that made it almost unbelievable. (just the one night stand happening, the baby from one night together, that the both meet up in another country and he’s her boss...)

I also was frustrated with the hero. I thought he was quite mean and a bit of an arrogant idiot. The lengths he believes the heroine went through to ‘deceive’ him were just so laughable. I was also frustrated that he makes comments about not wanting children, but doesn’t have a problem with having unprotected sex with a one night stand. And then again when they meet, he just keeps it up but doesn’t have a problem blaming HER if she gets pregnant. The things he says were annoying to me and he didn’t take any responsibility for his own actions or choices until the very end.

I did really like the ending of the novel.

Thank you to Harlequin Audio for the ALC.

A one way ticket to Tuscany, while you’re unemployed and pregnant? More like a one way trip to the Bonkers Villa.

A lot of this books set up from a plot perspective is pretty standard for secret baby trope. A woman (a virgin, naturally) has a one night stand with her—unbeknownst to her— Michelin star and self made millionaire chef boss. No names, no numbers, just pleasure. Except he slept with her in a weirdly spiteful way because she confided in a friend (who turned out not to be her friend) that the food at his restaurant, where she worked, was uninspired and showy. And so, unemployed, mildly broke, and pregnant, she ends up retreating to Nebraska before running off to Italy when she’s 6 months pregnant. AND THAT’S JUST THE FIRST CHAPTER.

Fast forward two years and she is a mom and the manager of a hotel in Tuscany. And in comes THE MAN. The rest of the story is essentially them cautiously working together because he’s buying the hotel and then reconnecting after she reveals she had his baby. And like all men, he is SO WRONGED! She has BETRAYED him! How dare you keep my heir from me! Signore give me a break. You never told her your name. There is of course a happy ending and a steady infusion of Christmas magic and all the hyperbolic food and taste descriptors in the last couple chapters. Because it’s LOVE that makes it all come together and shine bright.

I found the narration to be a touch too…sincere? Earnest? It was enjoyable, but when I’m reading a category romance, I want a little bit of added flair to the audio performance. Something to help enhance the drama! This was good, if a little monotonous.

I used to read Harlequin books on a fairly regular basis; as I was on their subscription service for many years. I have recently been getting back into them. So, I chose this audiobook from Net Galley because it looked like a good Christmassy story. Christmas turns out to be a small portion of the story; albeit a very important part. I enjoyed listening to this audiobook; the narrator was very good at giving each of the characters their own voice. The story is well written with 3 dimensional characters and a good storyline.

The main character, Hannah Hanson, is a somewhat naive woman from a small midwestern town, with an odd family dynamic. She inadvertently says something to a friend, while working at a high-end restaurant in New York; that said "friend" gets published in the news and costs Hannah her job. There are events that happen that have Hannah moving to a small town in the Tuscany hillsides. The majority of the story takes place in Italy, with a gentleman from Hannah's past.

There are a few scenes with sexual content. Some of the little more detailed ones could avoid the "details" and still make its point.

An Heir for Christmas is a second chance, secret baby, one night stand to more holiday romance. Hannah had a passionate night with Antonluca in New York 3 years ago after one of her worst weeks professionally. He didn’t tell her who he was, so she couldn’t tell him when she found out that she was pregnant. Hannah now lived in Italy with her 2-year-old son, working as a manager of a posh hotel. Antonluca didn’t realize that when he bought a hotel in an area of Italy that felt like home to him, he would have become Hannah’s new boss. She was the one who got away, but he didn’t realize what he left behind with her that one night.

This was fun holiday romance with a decent amount of angst. Hannah and Antonluca bonded through their passion for food, each other, and their son. This was a shorter story, so it felt a little instalove. Still, it had enough plot, angst, character development, and holiday vibes that was satisfying. The audiobook was well narrated and engaging.

Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for an ALC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3.75/5.

Heat Index: 6/10

—Christmas category romance (no shit)

—secret baby!

—Italian hero who has a COOKING EMPIRE

—"you stole my innocence"/"you stole my semen" classic

The Basics:

When she got knocked up and fired on basically the same day, Hannah ran off to Italy, where she became a hotel manager, because of course. Now Antonluca Aniello is in town to buy the place up—except, oops, turns out he's the very same guy who did the knocking up AND the firing three years ago! And he's not super thrilled about Hannah keeping his son a secret from him. Naturally, the solution to wanting to bone your newly-discovered baby's mother who you also hate is.... marrying her.

The Review:

I enjoy a Christmas category romance, and I also enjoy a secret baby romance. So, yes, I did like this. As soon as we dip into "It's Christmas, and somehow Hannah, while in the third trimester of pregnancy, beat out a bunch of Italians for a job, secured a visa, and has been hustling since then with baby Dominic in tow" I was good. It's like a Christmas hallmark movie, except this has the word "cock" in it, so much better.

You can probably predict the beats. Antonluca has a traumatic child that has made him a Christmas grinch, and also a dick in general. Hannah gave him her innocence without knowing his name. She did, honestly, kind of run her mouth in a really dumb way before he fired her, but it wasn't THAT bad. He's caught between hating her for the whole secret baby thing, and really, really wanting to bang her. Which he does.

Really, I don't have a lot to critique. I do wish there had been a bit more... wackiness? Categories are a little less wacky than they used to be, much like the rest of tradpub romance. But they still tend to be a little turboweird at points, and this was less so.

That being said—I really enjoyed the "food as drama" bit. It's perfectly Christmas-themed, and it leads to a great emotional reconciliation that did make me go "awwww' Atonluca, you weird Italian man". He doesn't know love, but he knows food! He can't express his feelings, but he can whip up a MEAN meringue.

The Sex:

You have a a few sex scenes in this one, and—it's a Harlequin Presents, right? Nothing crazy. Explicit, sexy, but you probably won't gasp in shock. Or maybe you will. I don't know you. Anyway, assignment understood.

The Conclusion:

Warm and Christmas-y and escapist, this book could've been a LITTLE more punched up dramatically for the sake of the category angle. But it still pleased me, and I'm happy with it. Solid narration as well!

Thanks to Harlequin Audio and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am currently in my Holiday romance reads era and loving every bit of it. Italy during Christmas time sounds like an absolute dream and traveling around Italy is so high on my bucket list. The narration by Allyson instantly transported you into the hills of Tuscany. The writing is vivid and picturesque, and I loved it. Hannah & Antonluca had delicious chemistry and a surprising amount of emotional depth for a quick 200 page book. This book is perfect if you’re looking for a quick holiday read that you can devour in one sitting!

A festive, dramatic holiday romance!

An Heir for Christmas by Caitlin Crews delivers everything you could want in a quick, emotional holiday read. Hannah Hansen can’t believe her new boss, Antonluca Aniello, is the man who unknowingly changed her life forever—and now she has to face him again with a life-altering secret. She’s terrified of what will happen when he finds out… but she never expected his response to be a marriage demand!

This story feels like the appetizer version of a Hallmark movie—with extra spice. It’s fast-paced but manages to pack in all the best tropes: secret baby, billionaire boss, Christmas magic, second-chance romance, and a touch of forced marriage drama. Perfect if you’re in the mood for a steamy yet heartwarming holiday escape.

Thank you, Harlequin Audio, for providing this Advanced Reader Copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have been away from Harlequin reads/listens for quite some time now, and returning always brings that little smile when I have read/listen to quite a nice trope of a story. Catlin Crews “An Heir for Christmas” was quick listen to the beginning of my holiday season, emotional holiday read. Hannah’s world is changed when her boss Antonluca Aniello enters her life. Love sometimes a hidden baby trope and steamy between the main characters. Allyson Ryan does a good job at performing the narrative. My only drawback is that the storyline transitioned a bit slow.

I voluntarily listened and reviewed an eARC of this book via NetGalley and thank Harlequin Audio for granting this opportunity. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Caitlin Crews is in my top 5 favorite authors. I read everything she writes. I adored this short, fun Christmas book. Not only was this well written, but it oozed that wonderful conflict that makes the reader glued to the book from start to finish. I always finish her books wanting another one immediately! The connection between Hannah and Anton was sexually charged with tension and emotion. Great spice!! This is a second chances, secret baby novel. There’s angst and lots of great emotion to give me all the feels. A fun quick listen. The Tuscany setting was a huge bonus! The narrator did a great job bringing these characters to life especially voicing Anton. She did a great job voicing Anton. I received this audiobook from Harlequin and Netgalley. An Heir for Christmas by Caitlin Crews is a charming, slightly spicy holiday romance that’s perfect for a cozy winter afternoon. The story follows a woman whose unexpected reunion with a powerful man from her past brings both emotional tension and festive warmth. Crews balances the chemistry and the heart beautifully, creating a short read that feels both passionate and sweet. The characters are well-drawn, the setting sparkles with Christmas magic, and the ending delivers the kind of happily ever after that leaves you smiling. A delightful, feel-good read for anyone who loves second chances and holiday love stories.

💕 A quick, Christmas in Italy and a secret baby romance. I received as an arc audio copy from NetGalley

The narrator was easy to listen to. However, I am partial to dual narration.

The story was cute albeit a little far-fetched…. But that’s expected in this genre so I don’t hold the cheesiness again the book.

I did like how the author set the scenery, it was easy to imagine the Italian setting. I also liked that the FMC was a badass single mom who did everything she could to raise her child with love and affection.

It’s a good one to check out for a steamy Christmas in Italy . 💕💕

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy.

An okay book

The book was okay, the plot took a long time to develop. The chapters were too long and condensed. She worked at one of his restaurants and made some comments that were published. He comes to fire her but there was an immediate attraction. They have a one night stand and she becomes pregnant. She doesn’t know who he is. 3 years later, he discovers he is the father of her son. Both have suffered from bad childhood memories. I had to skim over a lot because it became boring.

This was a sweet, quick audiobook!

Some of the portions, to me, were a bit far fetched. Like how didn’t she know that she was with Anton Luca that night when his face was plastered all over (he had a point). I personally couldn’t look past some of this stuff, hence the 3/5 stars.

Otherwise, it was a sweet little story with a tiny bit of spice.

The narrator was great, however I would have preferred a male for Anton Luca’s POV.

A second chance romance. Hannah and Antonluca bonded through their passion for food, each other, and their son. This was a shorter story, so it felt a little instalove/turnaround. A little bit forced and unbelievable. A quick read and short story. Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for the opportunity.

30% of info-dumping followed by the FMC not informing MMC about his son. Nope, count me out.

Also, a manager in Italy who can’t speak Italian? How naïve!
