Vanessa “Vanity” Kirkland is no stranger to drama. Her largely-agreed-upon title as the “Baddest Chick” in hip-hop practically demands it. But if she wants to catapult to megastar status, she’s going to have to break out of the box her raunchy lyrics have built around her and take on a new role.
Between the face, the former-NFL body, and the teddy-bear personality, Alec Everett is easy to cast as the boyfriend type - on TV and the personal wishlists of women all across the world. He’d be a PR dream if he weren’t almost too wholesome.
Both are known for keeping new people at a distance, but their casting in complementary roles demands that they pull together. They couldn’t be more different, but each has something the other is missing. Can they make it work for the roles - and each other?
I started off reading a digital copy but three chapters in switched to the audio. As usual, Wesleigh and Sharif did a great job. The first two chapters had me cheesing like a Cheshire Cat and the s3c scene was hot! My only complaint is that the ending seemed abrupt. I thought the audio had cut off. After checking the digital copy, I realized the ending was intentional.
Ugh, I wish this was longer! I’ve said it several times and I’ll say it again- CCJ’s pen is the truth.
I needed more Alec and Van. Their story was so sweet and more than I expected. And let’s not forget the way the author address how bold, sexually confident women are treated. Especially when they’re public figures. This was good, but I wish it was a full story. But we can’t have it all?!😂
The WAWG studio is a beast. Each addition gives readers a glimpse into the behind the scenes activity in producing a great show. The love connections are the next best thing to being in the CCJ Universe. Vanessa did her thing. I was happy to see her evolve.
I enjoyed Vanity’a story and her finally relenting to the inevitable pull of Alec’s charm! It was also great getting a small quick glimpse of Ellie and Shaw but lemme tell you who I don’t want to see ever again and that’s that slithering snake Annie!!!
Another good one by CCJ! Beneath the Fame balances romance with the real struggles women in the music face regarding their image and sexuality. Seeing V keep her sexuality and fight against labels kept the story good.
Initial reaction: Strong 4 stars. Has a similar vibe to the first book in the series. Feel like Vanessa could've been inspired by Meg the Stallion in a way. (I might be wrong, feel free to correct me.) Alec was sweet. If a guy buys a replacement for your fav perfume when you run out? He likes you.
Full review:
I pretty much devoured this second book in the WAWG Studios series from Christina C. Jones. "Beneath the Fame" follows a different couple than the first book, Vanessa and Alec. Vanessa, a.k.a Vanity, is a rapper who is unapologetic about her image and style. But she's looking for a change in venue and finds an opportunity acting alongside one of the sweetest guys in the industry, Alec Everett. Alec has a teddy bear personality (no kidding, he's very sweet and I really liked him in this narrative.). Former NFL star turned to TV. Folks love him, even to the point of being protective over him. (Social media is not kind to Vanity, and Alec has folks legit obsessing over him.) So when Vanity and Alec have sparks flying, it's something to see the "bad" girl getting with the "good" guy. But little does the public know - they don't know these two as well as they think they do. And they're apt to let everyone know on their terms.
The interviews that Vanessa and Alec go through are realistic and definitely had me wanting to fight for these two when their relationship and public images are challenged. The steamy scenes were piping hot, as expected for CCJ. Audiobook narration by Wesleigh Siobhan and Sharif Stephens was well done, as has been the case for this series so far. I would probably put this very short book (audio is just under 3 hours) on the same level of enjoyment I had with the first book in this series. It was nice to see the brief cameos here as well.
