Back Where We Began

Rate this book
It’s hard to forget your past when you’re staring at it.

That’s the conclusion Emma Watkins arrives at when she returns to Hayden, Maine—population 2,253; now 2,254—for the first time in nine years.

When she sees him for the first time in nine years.

When that word leaves his mouth. Buttercup. A pretty nickname in an ugly tone. A term of endearment time twisted into an insult. A taunt that nothing has been forgiven—or forgotten.

She’s back to sever ties. Break promises. Keep secrets. All easier said than done. The memories she left behind aren’t all bad…more like mostly good.

Being reminded of the happy times before the heartbreak doesn’t change the fact that this visit is a farewell tour, not a reunion. Caden Bennett is the guy she left behind. Being back where they began doesn’t change that.

But she never intended to fall for him the first time, either.

Second chance romance? ♥️

Written by Farnsworth? ♥️

What’s not to love about this one? He was a simp for her and she was a (very hesitant) badass.

You can thank me later

BARELY 2.5 STARS - RECOMMEND
This book is a huge whingefest by the leads. The event that causes the female lead to leave town is weak it’s not believable that she would just leave and not talk to her closest friend and boyfriend. You know from the start of the book that they’re getting back together so it’s skimming and skipping chapters of inane storylines and wondering when it’s going to happen. This author wasn’t able to capture any real emotion. The story idea itself is good but the author fails at any sort of development. Disappointing.
SEX SCENES - Yes, a couple. The scenes take place just shy of the end of the book. They were typical but not detailed. Again the author is not talented enough to write sexual tension and the build up or the crescendo.

DNF at 49%. This entire story felt incredibly boring to me. There was not a single ounce of me that yearned for these characters to get back together… the heroine (Emma) could’ve ended up with Soulja Boy for all I care.

Emma is written with no personality other than being away from her hometown for nine years and Caden’s entire personality is being a cop that Emma left nine years ago. If I ever see the phrase “nine years ago,” in another book, it’ll be too soon.

Most of their backstory feels like it’s *supposed to* be intriguing- but it mostly fell flat for me. Emma finds out her supposed uncle is actually her dad. Fine, I can deal with that. Her first reaction? Peace outta town and never speak to her boyfriend or friends again until said “uncle” dies. But when does Emma show back up? Two months after he died. HUH?!

I don’t know, I just felt like I was plopped into this book missing a bunch of context, characters with any redeemable qualities, and a storyline that made me feel invested. There’s zero sexual tension which you’d typically expect to see in a “second-chance” romance. The closest they get to “tension” (from what I’ve read) is sitting near a fire behind a mill late at night (and alas, the hero just *assumes* the heroine will be there and he’s right.) Their conversations are dull and contain barely any banter. There’s lots of inner dialogue between the two characters and barely any external dialogue which would at the very least up the stakes. Which just reiterated the fact that I couldn’t have cared less if these two characters ever saw each other again- much less if they ever formed a romantic relationship.

I can see how other people might enjoy this book but it lacked any excitement for me and therefore, will most likely remain on my DNF forever.

second chance romance i love u forever. anyways, this was such a fun read & i loved seeing caden & emma fall back in love. i think the only thing is that it took too long to explain what exactly had happened with them in the past. i think this could have benefitted from a few chapters set in the past. overall though, i’m always gonna be a sucker for second chance romance so this gets my stamp of approval.

• time gap
• slowburn
• lovers-enemies-lovers
• playful banter
• sexual tension

Caden and Emma dated for almost three years in high school and have been deeply in love since then. However, everything changed one night when Emma left the town. Caden is forced to clean up the wreckage Emma left behind and nursing his shattered heart alone. But, Emma reappeared 9 years later, unannounced, and their lives were once again turned upside down.

I've always been a sucker for second romances, so liking this book comes naturally for me. The story wasn't that unique nor THAT engrossing that would have me normally emotionally attached to it, but there was something comforting about it that I couldn't quite exactly pinpoint what. Maybe it's the vibe or feels? idk.

What I didn't like was the hero's silent desperation for Emma. I get that he was over over heels in love with her, but he could have had some self-respect at times 🤦🏻‍♀. His eagerness to give his heart again without hesitation and doing everything for her when he spent years fixing himself struck me as pathethic, and he was even well aware of it lol. Emma clearly had the upper hand and that bothered me. But hey, maybe that's just how it is with other people.

Also, there was other person involved. Caden had been dating Heather for three years, but when Emma returned, he seemed to forget about her. I despise emotional cheating! And there's the fact that Caden had intended to marry Heather before Emma's arrival, but that all fell through following Emma's return. If he wasn't sure about Heather, he could have broken up with her. He further showed disrespect to Heather by meeting up with Emma (albiet friendly) behind her back 2x/3x and singing their theme song on their friends' engagement party. I'm glad that they broke up immediately though, because Heather didn't deserve it. The author even made it seem as though their relationship was merely a matter of familiarity and not much more. Heather was also said to have met another man in Boston while still dating Caden, implying that she cheated on him to rationalize their breakup. And also... two days after their "official" break up HEATHER HAS ALREADY MOVED ON?! no way.

"That vet conference is still going on?"

"No. Uh, Chris lives there, actually. He wasn't just visiting for the conference." Her cheeks tinge pink, but she doesn't drop eye contact.

My ex girlfriend has officially moved on- a whooping forty-eight hours after we ended our three-year relationship. Maybe that should bother me. Instead, I feel relief. Certainty that I-we-made the right decision to end things.

yeah, right 🥴. Making up excuses to justify the break up while still lapping after the girl you're inlove with for a decade, huh?

the author could've done a better job. I'd be okay if Heather was a b*tch or had been cheating on him for a longtime, but she wasn't. So this is obviously just a cover up to justify everything and lessen the blow. Sorry, it didn't work for me 🙄.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

WELL...
I still ate this up since I'm a sucker for second chance romances. I would have given this a 5 star rating even if it wasn't in the BEST level category just for the vibe and comfort (in some ways) that this book provided, and the beautiful ending. But Caden's emotional cheating and desperation weren't just for me 😐.

P.S. Caden, you're still hot tho 😚

“Life doesn’t come with any guarantees. You have to fight for a happy ending.”

Is this another Farnsworth romance novel that I loved? Yes, yes it is! I love the writing and how it immediately drew me in to this perfectly imperfect little romance. Big city girl comes back to small town and sees ex boyfriend she hasn't seen in 9 years... Chaos ensues? Uh yes please!

I liked Emma and I really felt for her the more we learned about WHY she ran away 9 years ago as all of the family secrets were unveiled. I loved Caden, broody small town hottie who never got over his first love? ☑️

Read if you enjoy these tropes:

• Time gap
• Second chances
• Soulmates
• City girl / small town boy

This one comment ruined it

So the author makes us wait like 85% into the book for the steam scene...no problem...love a slow burn...but then sheruins the whole book by having Caden tell Emma , during said steam scene, that her breasts aren't as perky as they used to be????? What the what! Emma calls him on it and he says nothing back...she references her "saggy boobs" later in the scene and he still says nothing...no laughs...no teasing. Like wth? On what planet is that romantic or funny? Bucket of cold water...book ruined for me. It wrecked the before...during and after. What was the author thinking? Just bizarre.

This was super cute! Probably not my favourite by Farnsworth, but still very very good. The characters were all amazing as usual, and so was the writing. I also really liked that we got to see a bit of Beck and Saylor. It all felt very nostalgic.

I'm enjoying reading these books and reaffirming just how much I love C.W. Farnsworth's work.

Angsty Second Chance Romance with First Love

For 3 years in high school, Emma and Caden were inseparable and in love. Then Emma suddenly disappeared into the night and Caden was left with a broken heart and a restless soul that won’t settle no matter how badly he wants it or tries.

Just as suddenly as she left, Emma shows up in their tiny Maine town, almost 10 years later. No warning and no explanation as to why she abandoned all their plans for a future they didn’t even get to try.

This angsty, slow burn second chance romance had me absolutely on edge for Emma and Caden. Their feelings and the pain between them ran so deep that you felt it in every one of their interactions and squeezed my heart everytime. It’s just the right amount of emotional turmoil for me and I loved it.

And in case you were missing Saylor and Beck from First Flight, Final Fall-you’re in luck because you get juicy updates from them in this one!

This was sooooo cute, I don’t usually go for second chance romances cause it’s always a big ball of miscommunication but I really enjoyed it. Could have been a tad bit shorter🤏🏽 but nonetheless a quick read

I feel like this needed to be two books or at the very least have some flashbacks to really understand this relationship. As it stands, I don't feel anything for Emma and Caden as a couple. I felt like I started a book in the middle with no context. Also, the reason she left was underwhelming and I don't think realistically she would have gone for so long, nor not have told the guy she loved what happened? It wasn't like she murdered someone.... The drama level of this books is at a level 1. Even Caden and his girlfriend of 3 years ended (because Emma came back) with barely a whimper. There were a lot of pages with hardly any plot? Or plot that is very forgettable and tame.

As always, I love this author's writing style, but this plot and set of characters did nothing for me.

Charlotte is one of the authors whose books I anticipate the most. It's something about her writing and stories that I can't get enough of. She writes the best banter and very relatable characters.
Back where we began is definitely one of her best books. I loved Emma and Caden and how after so many years their love for each other is still so strong. The book is based in a small town which was one of my favorite part along with slow burn scenes, lingering conversations and fun banter. It's a must read!!

Seriously so proud of Charlotte and how far she's come since the first book I read by her, First Flight Final Fall. Back Where We Began follows Saylor's best friend from FFFF, Emma. It's such a treat when C.W. releases a new book, and I feel like she's a wizard with how fast she puts out new books. I rarely ever read second chance romances and it's even rarer that I love them, but Charlotte NEVER misses and does the second chance trope so well.

C.W.'s books keep getting better with each release and I can't wait to see what she releases next!

This book follow First Flight, Final Fall and part of me wishes I had read it before All The Wrong Plays for chronological sake, but it’s my favorite of the Saylor/Kluvberg/FFFF world, so I’m happy I finished with this one.

This felt like a true CW book - small town in Maine, complex family dynamics, complex relationship dynamics, and a great storyline. Emma was kind of like a step between Saylor and Sophia, and as much as I love Saylor, I think Emma may be my favorite in this FFFF world.

okaaaaay Caden absolutely made my swoon so much especially near the ending but ugh i needed more!!! i thought this was gonna be a 4⭐️ read for me as this story was set up perfectly (small town, second chance romance, dual pov) but just fell short when it came to sharing more depth and details of Emma & Caden’s love story in both past and present timelines… i also really wish the epilogue was how it ended & that the actual epilogue was a glimpse into the future bc i’m such a sucker for that🥲🥲

🌶️🌶

Back Where We Began was a slow burn, second chance romance with all the small town feels.

Emma left town 9 years ago and cut off all contact with everyone. She is returning for a quick trip because someone very close to her passed away and left her his business. Unfortunately, she immediately has a run-in with her ex-boyfriend Caden when he pulls her over and gives her a ticket. Caden is furious with how she left and broke his heart when they were teens.

Caden can’t stop thinking about her, and his feelings shift when he finds out the reason she left town. They obviously still have deep feelings for each other, but he has a girlfriend, and Ema was not planning to stay in town.

I am pretty picky when it comes to second chance romance, but I thought this one was good except for Emma’s reason for leaving. I thought it was pretty weak reasoning to leave and cut off all contact with her boyfriend and best friend for 9 years. I could kind of understand her reaction because she was just a teenager, but it was tough. I also didn’t love the way the girlfriend situation was handled.

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧
The audiobook was narrated by Jeremy York and CJ Bloom. They did a great job showing the mutual pining and angst between the characters. The audiobook honestly made me round up my rating because the narrators did a fantastic job.

Note : not safe
Not celibate during seperation of 9 years which is understandable since she left him with no explanation BUT my issues is the ruining of the " always been you" trope and " i waited for you and never stopped loving you " BS except that he did not wait at all and fully moved on with ow.

IT'S FINE IF HE MOVED ON then fell in love with fmc again, just don't write smth that's not there ffs

Mmc has a gf that he was planning to marry when the fmc reappears that he totally ghosts / emotionally cheats on her with the fmc
Another snoozfest of it's always been you and you are the love of my life except i moved on and i was ready to settle down before you showed up
Im afraid this author is always a miss

I haven't reached this part because i DNFed but more than one review said that after they have sex for the first time he comments on how her boobs aren't as " perky " as they used to

I am all in for a Second Chance romance.
*small town
*slow burn
*9 yr time gap
*high school lovers to enemies to lovers

Emma just up and flees her home town of Hayden,Maine with no explanation to her high school sweetheart of almost 3yrs. She’s back 9 yrs later to tie off some family business that had caused her to flee in the first place.
As she swings in to town getting pulled over by guess who… her old high school sweetheart, Caden who is not so happy to see her after all these years.
I adore the slow build of this romance. It’s sweet, emotional and endearing. I loved the writing, the character building and it had all the swoony feels.

Great story!!

This is a beautifully written emotionally charged story, which was family, friendships, animosity, humour, witty banter, challenges, twists, intrigue, surprises, and love which all leads to a riveting, engaging, entertaining, and spicy addictive page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
