Rate this book
Mallory wasn’t always riddled with anxiety and depression but losing her dad at sixteen broke something inside herself that she thought would never fully heal. She has spent the last five years going to therapy and been on medications, no better than the day she started them. Until the day she finds out someone was murdered in her small town and vows to get justice for them. She enlists the help of Bryce, a charming jock she knows better than to get involved with. The closer she gets to solving the murder, forgotten traumas from her past threaten to cast shadows on the investigation.

Bryce was always the life of the party, until tragedy struck unexpectedly. Trying to navigate his new world, Mallory crashes into his life full of sass and discontentment. He never imagined he would crave the presence of a woman determined to reject him at every angle, fighting everything in his power to break her walls down. When she slowly lets him, he vows to be her light in the darkness and finds the pieces of his own heart mending back together.

Shadows of a Tortured Heart is a romantic suspense that addresses mental health and trauma. It contains darker subjects that may not be suitable for all readers. Please refer to the author’s note and trigger warnings prior to reading.

*takes another tissue out of the box and ugly blow my nose*

First off, for years I have struggled with anxiety and panic attacks. I would pass out in the shower and be hospitalized so many times and nobody but my husband listened. If you want to understand how bad and how real it can get, Sloane did an amazing job making the reader feel like what it is really like.

Secondly, this story....this story...wow. I swore I knew what was happening. I thought I could predict so many things and I was wrong. Always wrong.

This book could fit into so many categories. Romance, sports romance, thriller..I could go on.

For this being Sloane's debut novel, I am afraid (in a good way) to see what she puts out in the future. The way she can make you feel all the feels and tear you apart the next (you know that chapter) but put you back together by the end.Wow!!! I would say I am speechless but clearly I am word vomiting. .....wow...

I’ve had the honor of going on this writing journey with the author and being a part of her process. From the first time I read her book in its raw form as she finished her first draft, I knew this was going to be an altering book for me. There were so many things in the book that resonated with me, specifically the themes centered around depression/anxiety and mental health. I cannot wait to read this book again in its final form when it comes out. The characters will grab you and make you fall in love with them. The story will have you going “Wait, what?!” And the books playlist will have you 100% in all of the feels. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this book. It’s worth every minute you will spend reading it.

I was sent an eARC with the first 6 chapters and I must say... wow! it was hooked! It was a bit predictable when it came to who the MMC was going to be, but the events kept me guessing. He seems a little mysterious, a little bit of a bad boy, but also a sweetheart. Definitely some darker themes, so check your triggers warnings.

Can't wait to read the rest after release day!

Every once in a while, you stumble on a story that doesn’t just check all the trope boxes—it feels like something more. Shadows of a Tortured Heart by Sloane Raleigh is that kind of book. With tropes we all know and love—college romance, sports romance, he falls first—it would be easy for it to blend in. But it doesn’t. Not even close.

What really sets this story apart is the emotional depth. Every character, not just the MCs, is going through something real. And somehow, even in all their individual struggles, they still find ways to show up for each other. There’s a rare kind of beauty in that.

The mental health rep is the soul of this book. It’s handled with honesty and care, and I know it’s going to resonate with so many readers who’ve been in those dark places. Sloane didn’t just write a romance—she wrote something that matters.

If you’re looking for something that’s raw, tender, and layered with meaning, this one’s for you. Just make sure to check those trigger warnings before diving in.

Wow. Just finished Shadows of a Tortured Heart and I’m honestly blown away.
This book has everything — raw, real representation of mental illness, deep emotional healing, and real-life struggles that hit hard. It’s one of the most honest, emotionally charged books I’ve read in a long time.

I don’t usually gravitate toward romance, but this wasn’t just a love story — it was a beautifully layered murder mystery, an exploration of trauma, and a journey toward healing.

It felt like a five-course meal in book form: satisfying, intense, and absolutely unforgettable. I laughed, I cried, I healed.

This is the first romance book in years I’m giving a solid ★★★★★ and recommending to everyone I can possibly think of.
Pure chef’s kiss. 👏

I struggled a bit with the beginning. It was a slow start for me, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. Things really picked up about halfway through, and by the time I got to the epilogue, I was all in.

Bryce was such a steady presence. His patience with Mallory and his constant love honestly carried the whole relationship. Their journey had its ups and downs, but it felt real and earned by the end.

Overall, once it got going, I was hooked. A solid read with a beautiful finish.

I was immediately hooked from the first paragraph. I related a little too much to Mallory & loved seeing her growth through finding out the truth. I loved the relationship with her & her friends as well as her relationship with Bryce! This book made me laugh, cry & fall in love with the characters!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of My Very Few Six-Star Reads

Mallory’s story is powerful, raw, and so necessary. This is a book that deserves to be shared far and wide, especially for anyone who has ever felt alone, unseen, or unheard. Reading it, I felt seen. I felt heard. And that kind of connection is rare.

I couldn’t put it down. It’s like there’s crack in the pages. Completely addictive in the best way. Every chapter pulled me in deeper, and I didn’t want it to end. I am absolutely counting down the days for the next book in the series.

If you’re on the fence: read it. You won’t regret it

Look, this is not my usual genre but I will tell you that this is out of the park for a new author. Very honest characters having very real conversations. The mental health discussions are really refreshing and the internal dialog of the main character has helped me in ways I could never imagine. I highly recommend this book and I look forward to picking up anything this author decides to release in the future - which I hope is a lot.

Shadows of a Tortured Heart is a powerful, emotional story that tackles trauma, mental health, and healing with sensitivity. Following Malory, a young woman burdened by fragmented memories and trying to find answers to parts of her history. It explores her relationships, her struggles with mental health, and her journey toward reclaiming her voice.

What stood out most was how real the characters felt. Malory is written with a rawness that makes her pain resonate, and Bryce emerges as one of the strongest portrayals of a supportive partner, patient, attentive, and deeply shaped by his own trauma. I could see myself in several parts of their story especially once it started digging into parts of mental health like suicide and depression. Their romance is believable because it grows from trust and care, not just attraction. The deep friendships with Skylar and Karsyn, you could feel that there was decades of history there.

The book doesn’t shy away from heavy issues: suicide, sexual assault, depression, anger, and questions of self-worth. As someone who has dealt with these types of mental health issues my entire life I felt like these subjects are handled respectfully, and the story often reflects the experience of trying to piece together trauma, with flashbacks and disjointed memories creating both tension and confusion. At times, the structure could feel disorienting, but that seemed intentional, putting me into Malory’s perspective as she uncovered the truth.

If I had any issue it would be pacing, as this was the only weak spot. The first act hooks you immediately, the second slows down substantially, and the third brings the momentum back with some powerful reveals.

The writing itself shines with memorable quotes that capture both the weight of trauma and the power of healing:

“Strength is what we gain from the madness we survive.”
“Accomplishments mean nothing if deep down you are a terrible person and had to stab backs to get there.”
“My grumpy Sunshine that broke through all my darkest pieces one by one.”
“The light that broke through the shadows of my tortured heart.”

This one had me cackling:
“Fuck you Blue for dying on me.”

Overall:

Shadows of a Tortured Heart is not an easy read, but it’s a rewarding one. It’s heavy, raw, and emotional; a story about surviving, healing, and finding light even in the darkest places.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don’t even know where to begin. This book wrecked me in the most beautiful, gut-wrenching way. As someone who has personally dealt with anxiety and depression, I felt seen in a way I rarely do in fiction. The author captured the rawness of mental health struggles with a level of honesty that was almost too real—like looking in a mirror I wasn’t quite ready to face.

There’s a quote that stopped me in my tracks: “Guess we now all have trauma caused by our parents. It’s unfair that the people who were always supposed to protect us, are also the people who broke us.” That line hit so close to home, it felt like a punch to the chest. It was one of those moments where I had to just sit with the weight of it. That kind of truth doesn’t just pass through you—it stays.

And the plot? Just when I thought I had it figured out, the story flipped everything on its head. I predicted, I guessed, I thought I was onto something—and I was wrong, over and over again. The twists were brilliantly done, and each one left me reeling in the best way.

This book is impossible to box into one genre. It blends romance, sports romance, mystery, and psychological drama seamlessly. The banter between the main characters had me laughing out loud, and moments later, I’d be holding back tears. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, but it never feels forced. Every feeling is earned.

There are some deeply emotional and triggering moments throughout, but none of it feels excessive or done for shock value. It’s real pain, real heartbreak, real healing. And through all of it, there’s this underlying strength in the characters that makes you root for them even in their darkest moments.

I still can’t believe this is a debut. I found the author through TikTok and truly feel like fate stepped in. I devoured this story, and while I was sad to finish it, I’m beyond excited for what’s next. I’ll follow this author anywhere her words take me.

A Must-Read for Anyone Who’s Ever Struggled in Silence

Shadows of a Tortured Heart is a book that truly has it all—unexpected twists, edge-of-your-seat mystery, the perfect amount of spice, and most importantly, a depth that makes readers feel understood.

What sets this novel apart is the way it shines a light on the often-unspoken reality of struggling with mental health. Sloane Raleigh doesn’t shy away from the darkness, but instead portrays it with raw honesty, giving voice to a deeply underrepresented group of people who wrestle with their inner battles. The story not only acknowledges that darkness but also offers a ray of hope, reminding readers that healing is possible, even if it happens slowly and quietly.

This book views mental health not as an endpoint, but as a place where growth can take root—where light and positive change can be added, little by little. For those who have ever felt unseen, this story delivers comfort and validation, all while wrapping you up in a compelling narrative full of passion and suspense.

Shadows of a Tortured Heart isn’t just a read—it’s an experience that lingers, reminding you that even in the darkest places, hope and light can find their way in.

I have never read a book where I feel like someone understands me. I have struggled with depression and anxiety for years. I felt seen through Mallory's character and all the struggles she faced. From the highs and lows, the extreme anger to wanting to end it all - I have been there. But thank God, because I have a Bryce in my life named Anthony. The way Bryce was there for Mallory through the worst parts of herself, my husband was there for me and continues to be daily. I fully believe if I did not have his love and support through the worst times in my life, I wouldn't be here.

If you have ever struggled with mental health, read this book. You are not alone!

It did take me a while to finish this book because it was triggering to me at certain points. When that happened, I would sit it down and come back later. I am very thankful I continued and finished it.

Thank you, Sloane, for providing me with this ARC, but also for letting me know I am seen!

When starting this book I was not sure what to expect. The characters were relatable, and each had friends and a history that I wanted to learn more about.

This was a story that NEEDED to be told. We as a collective group need to know that trauma is REAL. We need to stop making mental health a stigma and making it taboo to discuss. This author put mental health, trauma, healing, discussion, the bad stuff and rainy days and ALL. OF. IT. front and center so we could not shy away. I felt so comfortable reading this. Felt like it healed a part of me I wasn’t aware needed healing because, I thought it was. She took me into my own self with her insightful writing and made me take another look at my own healing.

I loved this book and cannot wait to read more!

I was given the pleasure of reading this as an ARC. Can we just stop for a minute and say WOW?!
First off, please understand that this book has several very heavy topics, so proceed with that awareness. That being said, this author does an amazing job with how the book is written and how the topics are covered. She makes you fall in love with the characters immediately, and you won't want to put it down. The twists inside the story are ones you don't see coming.
It does have a few open door scenes. I do have to mention Bryce, I wish every person had a Bryce in their life when facing life's hardships.

Raw and deeply emotional rollercoaster!

From intense frustration to the darkest thoughts, her narrative truly hit home for me. If you're grappling with similar struggles, immersing yourself in this book is a must. It offers a comforting reminder that you're not navigating this whirlwind of emotions alone. Keep persevering!

I absolutely devoured this book. It was soooo good.

It was an absolute major emotional roller coaster. Sadness, despair, happiness, love, and a sassy banter between the two main characters that had me giggling non stop.

There are some highly triggering scenarios that not all may be comfortable reading. Though most are fade to black in description. But this book is about mental health and the struggles these characters have gone through. I felt she portrayed what they went through well, without making it unbelievable. Everyone’s challenge with mental health is different. So no two journeys may be the same. But to endure such pain and heartbreak, and still fight till the end.

I was sad to finish it, but excited for the next books about other characters and their stories.

This might be my favorite read of 2025! If I could give it 6 ⭐️, I would!! The way the author chose each song to start off each chapter made the book feel like a puzzle and each piece just perfectly fit. I had so much fun reading the book and listening to the playlist along the way. It felt like immersive reading! Definitely check the trigger warnings cause there is some tough stuff in here. The way Bryce loves is swoon worthy for sure! 🫠Mallory is the ideal strong-willed and tenacious FMC 😍

It takes the stigma away from mental health issues and shows what it is like to deal with those struggles from all the characters perspectives. Halfway through I didn’t want to put it down. It is a love story and mystery and kept me on the edge of my seat until the end.

This book was a whirlwind of emotions. As a person with anxiety, I loved the way that Mallory was so relatable in her self-dialogue and thought process. Many parts of this story made me smile uncontrollably (RARE) and I shed several tears along the way. As I was wrapping up my reading I could feel that familiar elephant on my chest knowing it would be over soon. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a book hangover, but I fear this one is going to stick with me for a while yet. It only took me 2 days to read, and I wish I could go back and experience it for the first time again. Bryce is the book boyfriend you didn’t know you needed. Please PLEASE give this book a read. And I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment of this series.

A beautiful written story about Mallory that will make you feel heart broken, laugh , cry, feel giddy , and say hell yes !A redeeming story that also shines light on how important your mental health is! Where there is light there is also light as well as hope. The characters will show you all the different perspectives and sides of mental health. You don’t have to do all alone and it truly takes a village.
