firstly, thank you to the publisher for an arc!

ok, i SWORE that i had read vol 1 of this series years ago, but after reading this omnibus edition, i can safely say i have never read this series because i would have absolutely remembered such stunning illustration, vibrant characters, and intriguing world; however, that means i can binge the entire series now, to much excitement! and especially with the anime airing, i'm excited to continue reading this series~

the beauty in reading is seeing the same concepts recreated in unique and original ways - it never ceases to amaze me how creative and whimsical some people are.

witch hat atelier is so beautiful in its storytelling, artwork, character development, and especially worldbuilding. i love how the magic system is explained through coco's lessons and experiences.

i cannot wait to continue reading this series!

So adorable!! I can see why this is a popular manga and this grimoire edition sounds like it’ll be stunning!

All Coco has wanted is to become a witch and use magic. When her first attempt at it goes awry and endangers a loved one, Coco swiftly becomes an apprentice to learn how to undo the magic. But she discovers that learning it is more difficult and holds more responsibility than she thought.

I absolutely loved reading about Coco and her foray into the magical world. Her positivity and vibrancy remind me of Kiki, who I also adore. The world and magic system are well explained with a deeper underlying mystery threaded throughout the story.

The art is gorgeous and kept me mesmerized from the moment I started reading. I’ve heard that there is an anime and I can only imagine what this art would look like in color!

I received a sample of this grimoire edition which only consisted of volume I. I’d love to read the rest of the volumes since it seems that Coco’s story is just getting started.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for the advanced copy!

[Thanks to Kodansha and NetGalley for an ARC of this manga in exchange for an unbiased review.]

Well, this isn’t an easy review because it’s for the digital version of something that is best experienced as a physical product and two thirds of the content isn’t actually here in the ARC. Please keep that in mind while reading.

In fact, I have it on good authority that I trust implicitly in these matters that the physical version is rather stunning and I’m nearly inclined to give it the nod based on that alone.

What I have to work with is some bonus material and the first volume. Of the two, I’ll be focusing on the initial volume and I will say first off that it is expertly done and made me want to restart and catch up on the whole series (I had to drop it for cost reasons ages ago and just never came back).

This first volume is packed with set-up, yet never feels rushed or laborious. It balances its teaching by having it come via Coco, our lead and audience surrogate, who is enamoured of magic.

So enamoured, in fact, that she ends up discovering the rather complex trick behind it and experimenting on her own, which leads to grave consequences and her adoption into an atelier by the probably-too-nice witch, Qifrey.

Coco is a winning lead for something like this - determined and hard-working, yet slightly impulsive, but not too annoying about it. Throw in her quest to save her mother, plus the unfortunate secret of magic, and it all works.

It helps that Coco has her own skills that she employs when placed in a very dangerous situation by a fellow apprentice, Agott, who functions as a mini-antagonist for this volume. Agott’s haughty nature and comeuppances add a lot to the volume.

And amidst all this, there’s the quiet addition of background forces moving around while Coco is starting her journey. The tantalizing breadcrumbs of another witch faction, mystic libraries, and special destinies are all slowly seeded for the future.

Plus, the art is drop dead gorgeous and I had, again, forgotten just how intricate it is. Some of the magic effects and the beastie that ends the first volume in particular are spectacular highlights.

Basically, book good. I wish I was able to give an appraisal of the entirety of this edition’s contents and presentation, but I can’t. I do think this is a very good read and doubt you’ll be disappointed by it, but I wanted to be able to make that claim wholeheartedly.

4.5 stars - I would genuinely love to round this up, that first volume is a belter, but I don’t feel comfortable vouching for what I haven’t seen. Absolutely recommended, but not a total endorsement of this version.

It had a great, quite impactful start. I liked that the magic was as beautiful as it was dangerous, depending on who uses it, and how they also explained things about the world without it being boring or tedious.

All the characters were interesting, especially Qifrey. I'm really eager to learn more about him and his intentions.

I think it's a world with a lot of potential. This was just the foundation for what could be a great story full of adventures, secrets, evil beings, and above all, magic. I'm really looking forward to seeing what direction this story will take and why Coco is so important.

And of course, what stands out the most is the beautiful art. Every drawing is full of lovely details.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the arc of this manga in exchange for an honest review.

Witch Hat Atelier is undeniably gorgeous with stunning artwork and equally incredible storytelling. This series has such a unique take on the magic system and while the characters are young there are incredibly dark themes.

I love Coco's character - she's genuinely interested in learning magic but she's also not afraid to dip into forbidden spells if it means protecting the people she cares about. For a series that's so far only around 16 volumes the lore and the vast amount of characters it introduces pacts such a punch.

The grimoire edition has the first few volumes which set up the magic system and the world of this story for some of the darker volumes to come. It's truly a beautiful series.

It was so cozy and cute. The magic system is quite complex and I’m sensing there will be some beautiful friendships growing in the future. That ending was an amazing!

So, I have been seeing Witch Hat Atelier around my library for a while. I thought the cover was pretty, but I didn’t really pay too much attention to it at first. It looked just like another cozy fantasy series, which was fine. Then I was in a preview webinar and saw the interior art and after that I saw the anime trailer, then I watched the first episode of the anime. And when I tell you, I was instantly hooked and immediately shocked to discover that this was not, in fact, just a slice of life cozy fantasy series. The inciting incident, which I won’t spoil because for me it came out of nowhere when I was expecting again just a cozy slice of life fantasy series, literally had me slack jawed and looking at my partner who was watching with me like did that just happen?

The magic system in this book is, I think, my favorite magic system of anything I have ever read. I love the world. I love all of the characters. (QIFREY!?!?!!) I am already obsessed.

But even beyond the great storytelling, the art? I could write so much about how beautiful the art is. The delicate line work, the lines of motion, the expressiveness, the scale, the magic. Gorgeous. I find myself lingering on pages and going back to look at them again. I technically got a preview of the Grimoire Edition, which apparently is supposed to have extra art along with the first three volumes, and I can’t *imagine* how beautiful it all is. All I know is that it is definitely worth it, and I am probably going to buy it at some point.

I have already requested all of the volumes my library has.

I need everyone to read this right now because it is so… so so so good. If nothing else, just look at the art. It’s beautiful.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for this preview. Glorious. Beautiful. (Could I just maybe get a physical copy of the Grimoire Edition? Maybe? Possibly? I promise not to share the magical secrets with anyone else.)

Book Review: Witch Hat Atelier: Grimoire Edition 1 by Kamome Shirahama

Witch Hat Atelier: Grimoire Edition 1 immediately feels different from most fantasy manga. The premise alone is compelling: a girl who has spent her entire life believing magic is something you are simply born with discovers that it is actually learned through intricate drawn symbols and careful craftsmanship. That revelation transforms the story from a standard “chosen one” fantasy into something far more interesting. Watching Coco stumble into this hidden world of spellwork feels genuinely exciting because the series treats magic like a discipline people study, practice, and sometimes misuse.

What truly elevates the book, though, is Kamome Shirahama’s artwork. Every page feels meticulously crafted, from the elaborate spell circles to the flowing cloaks and densely detailed architecture. The oversized Grimoire Edition format makes the art even more impressive because it gives the linework and tiny visual details room to breathe. Her style sits at the intersection of manga and Art Nouveau, combining expressive manga storytelling with the elegance of decorative linework, flowing organic shapes, and ornate detail. The result is a world that feels both timeless, immersive, structured and dreamlike, like an illustrated fairy tale rendered with precision and care.

The characters are also promising right from the start. Coco is easy to root for because her enthusiasm for magic never feels forced, and Qifrey immediately gives the impression that there is much more beneath his calm mentor persona. Even the supporting apprentices already feel distinct enough that I want to spend more time with them. The series balances cozy magical-school atmosphere with hints of something more unsettling, especially once it begins exploring who is allowed access to knowledge and why certain forms of magic are forbidden.

More than anything, this first Grimoire Edition made me want to stay in the world longer. It captures that rare feeling of opening a fantasy story and wanting to explore every corner of it. Between the inventive magic system, the strong character setup, and some of the most beautiful manga artwork I have seen in a long time, this felt like an easy five-star read for me and the beginning of something genuinely special.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kondansha Comics for providing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

I read what equates to the first manga volume which was offered i. form of an ARC - the complete Grimoire Edition contains the first three manga volumes. Therefore I can only review what I have read - I am reasonably keen to continue the series.

The artwork is exquisite and puts me in mind, particularly the characters' side profiles, of 1970s shojo style. The details of the objects and surroundings are lovely, and there is not too much going on in every panel. The balance is just right and everything is easy to follow.

So far the characters feel quite archetypal of fantasy manga - fish out of water, clumsy MC, the polite and refined academic mentor, the loud, brash but nice one, the mysterious one-liner one, and the enigmatic rival. I'd be interested to see how they all develop.

The worldbuilding is slow but so far easy to grasp - there is a familiarity to it, if you've ever read anything to do with young magic users learning the ropes. There are bits of intriguing lore woven into the narrative, but at the moment it feels rather underdeveloped.

Overall this was a charming introduction to Coco's story of becoming a witch and the Grimoire edition is absolutely beautiful.

*I received an eARC sample from Kodansha Comics & NetGalley containing Vol 1 and 1 Bonus illustration. All opinions are my own*
.
I had originally read the first few volumes a few years ago but they hadn’t quite grabbed my attention so I had put the series on the shelf for a little while. This is my first re-read and wow do I see what is special about this series! It is slow, but it’s deliberate and thoughtful and has the mysteries well placed in little corners while still giving space for the awe and beauty of the magic that can be found in art - in both the spells and on the page.
.
This series is a classic in the making and this grimoire edition (which I’ve been lucky enough to see in person in stores already) is stunnninngggg and does such a service to the story inside). The bonus art is lovely and seeing a few pages in full colour genuinely takes my breath away, but with a hefty price tag on it - if you’re interested in only collecting the regular manga version - you won’t be missing any of the real meat.
.
But to the ones who this story means so much and they have the means - this will be a treasured edition for sure that will look beautiful on shelves. I know I’m tempted to restart the whole series again already.

I’ve seen a lot of hype around the new anime for this manga, so I jumped at the chance to review a sample of this stunning grimoire edition (which only contained volume 1, as opposed to the 3 included in the physical copy).

In volume 1 we are introduced to Coco, a young girl who is desperate to become a witch. After a chance encounter with Satoru Gojo, sorry, Qifrey, she discovers a closely guarded secret about magic, after which her only option is to accompany him to Jujutsu High School, I mean, the Atelier to train as his witch apprentice.

Volume 1 mostly introduces the magic system and the cast of characters, not delving too much into the lore or plot. The panels are beautifully drawn, and this special edition promises new full colour artwork and bonus content to go alongside it. However, the story itself for me was lacking, and didn’t feel original or exciting enough to want to continue with the rest of the volumes.

I think this grimoire edition will be perfect for existing fans of the story who want a keepsake for their collection, or perhaps younger readers who enjoy fantasy without too much drama.

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read and review!

Thank you Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for the ARC!

This Grimoire Edition captures the first three volumes of Witch Hat Atelier, a truly whimsical story that follows Coco, a girl with a simple dream: She wants to be a witch.

This is such a magical story that I know is only scratching the surface for Coco and her journey. With a unique magic system, an array of characters and an underlying mystery, it left me desperate to continue reading.

The art is simply mesmerising. There is so much detail on the pages, I could feel the character's emotions, I was immersed in the magic throughout and the intricate spell designs were some of my favourites. I really appreciated the bonus art that was included in colour—it made an already vibrant story even more vivid.

This is a wonderful book for collectors and those who are already fans of Witch Hat Atelier. For those new to the story, if you love adventurous stories set in magical worlds then this is sure to be a treasured edition.

Thank you to NetGalley, Kodansha Comics, and Shirahama for the eARC!

The story introduces us to Coco, a young girl captivated by a world of magic that seems forever out of her reach. When she inadvertently discovers the true nature of sorcery, her life is transformed in ways both wondrous and heartbreaking. What resonates most is Coco’s characterization; her blend of curiosity, guilt, and raw determination feels profoundly human.

Each panel is meticulously detailed: from the intricate geometry of the spell designs to the tactile quality of the clothing and architecture. It truly feels like a storybook brought to life. Beyond the 'cozy fantasy' exterior, I was impressed by the narrative's depth, particularly its exploration of privilege, the weight of forbidden knowledge, and the ethics of power. Highly recommend for readers immersive worldbuilding and stunning visual storytelling! (:

I have heard nothing but good things about this manga, and I understand why now. This feels like the manga version of Harry Potter. Not the same magic system or aesthetics, but it gives us those same things with the same whimsy that the first Harry Potter did.

This is such an adorable witchy fantasy tale! The aesthetics are perfect and they create such a nice atmosphere for the setting, and the magic system is so well thought out!
Its unique and thoroughly worked through, between the way its cast to all the ways it can go wrong or work in a different way. The author really took the time to make a truly functional magic system.

Also, the artwork is just beautiful. One of the reasons I love manga is seeing all the different art styles authors have, and this one does not disappoint. The scenery is gorgeous and the characters are all adorable and unique!

Thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the copy of this ebook.

I requested this very close to its pub date cause I figured I'd shoot my shot, and I got it after, so I couldn't review this before May 5, but damn, this was GREAT.

Witch Hat Atelier has been on my manga radar for such a long time, and I don't know why I hadn't decided to read it yet, but I saw this gorgeous cover on NetGalley, and it felt like a sign.

This story is immediately gripping, BEAUTIFULLY illustrated (like, I don't know any other manga I've read comes close to this level - every scene is gorgeous and I wanted to step into this world so badly!!!!), the magic is interesting, the characters are engaging, and I love them already, and I look forward to seeing how the plot continues moving forward and seeing Coco grow.

I loved this, definitely a new favorite, and this is a beautiful edition.

In 2016, Kamome Shirahama would begin her masterpiece in the pages of Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Morning Two. Selling over 7.5 million copies in circulation and an awards favorite, Witch Hat Atelier has the best of both worlds: magical girls that rival the likes of Sailor Moon, and a fresh spin on familiar fantasy tropes like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Whilst the ongoing anime adaptation produced by Bug Films has been an instant hit, Shirahama’s manga gets the hardcover treatment with the first volume of the Grimoire Editions being released.

This is a magical manga that follows a young girl becoming a witch apprentice. We see her learn what magic is and how it should be used. The friend group is solid and I loved her teacher. My favorite thing had to be watching her learn how to harness her magic. I cannot wait to see what the next set brings.

This book includes the first three volumes of the Witch Hat Atelier manga. I will say that the new anime show follows the books almost exactly, so heads up if you plan on doing both. The artwork is stunning and I had such a magical time reading this. If you are a fan of YA fantasy mangas you should try this.

I won’t lie with all the hype surrounding the anime, I was a bit scared to get into this series. However, I do realize why some piece get a lot of attention and it’s because it’s good. This is the definition of being good, I absolutely enjoy the animation 😻. This version only contains volume 1 and begins to the story of Coco in a world of wizards however it’s not what she believed it was when she makes a huge mistake that prompts the story. It’s not something that I usually go for in terms of genre but the art and plot line are captivating enough for me to want to continue and see it through.
