I’m a dead girl walking—figuratively and literally. I don’t exist anymore. Those who wanted me dead believe that I am, and the ones who needed me alive haven’t accepted I’m gone. I should stay dead and hide their secret to keep people safe, but it’s been fifteen years.
Edith Campbell survived a small town homicide cover-up, but fifteen years later the case remains unsolved. Her name is like a cool breeze for most of the residents, but to Callahan Howell it’s a ghost that haunts his childhood. Edith sees an opportunity to force the town officials to solve the crime and expose those pulling the strings, but the risk of running into Callahan is high. He hasn’t let the idea of Edith go, and if he catches on to who the new girl in town is…he won’t let her stay away.
One of the great joys of being an ARC reader is the thrill of discovering new authors who sweep you into their worlds and make you care deeply about their characters. Blackwater by Kenna Bellrae was exactly that kind of surprise for me.
Fast-paced, gritty, and full of intrigue, this story weaves longing and yearning with a touch of dangerous special ops energy and yes, it’s spicy too!. The dual POV and shifting timelines worked seamlessly, offering compelling backstories and character depth while keeping the tension high. I was fully invested as the main characters fought not just for survival, but for the chance at an incredible second chance.
A steamy, suspenseful, and emotional ride—I’ll definitely be watching for more from Kenna Bellrae!
Blackwater is a fun, thriller romance; centering around a murderous, evil cult, the girl they put through hell who is determined to take them down, and her childhood best friend who will do anything not to lose her.
Edith is missing, thought to have committed suicide but no body has been found. This is days after her boyfriend has also been presumed dead via accident. His body has also not been found.
A small town filled with of secrets. A classic trope. This one is built around a religious cult. Chosen families protect the church and serve it without question. What do they do? Edith would love to find out.
Callahan still lives in town, 15 years after his best friends Isaac and Edith disappeared. He refuses to believe they are dead. Edith was his first love and he dreams of her daily still. When a stranger walks into his bar, with some peculiar behaviors. His interest is piqued and he dives back into the mystery of Edith’s disappearance.

I was privileged to receive an ARC of this book and have been honest in my review of it. I did not receive anything in exchange for my review.
I have chosen not to rate this book. The story concept is good, the characters are well written, but the ARC I received was incomplete. There were multiple storyline inconsistencies which should have been found by prior readers before you get to ARCs. There’s a missing chapter - not as in the numbers were labeled wrong. It is missing a whole section of the story. Many typos and a few drafted notes sections. The scene transitions are jarring rather than smooth - which does not seem intentional.
I’ll be curious to see the published version. The authors style is good and I would read her again. I am choosing not to rate this book rather that provide is a low rating due to my experience as an ARC reader.
I was coming for them and they would fear my wrath and might. They thought they’d killed a sheep, but they re-birthed a god damn phoenix. And they would burn at my hand.
4.5/5✨ 4/5🌶️
This was something very unexpected but in a good way. It definitely is not for the soft-hearted and I highly recommend checking your TW/CW - Blackwater is a quick, spicy, thriller romance/ romantic suspense, that is centred (centered? idk) around a vile, evil cult in a small town, and follows a girl who was put through the ringer and her best friend who will do anything to protect and not lose her…until he does….for now…i guess you will just have to read and find out on August 16🤭
okay, I cannot believe this was only 190 pages😧 it was FILLED to the brim with everything and I’m throughly impressed with Kenna because she didn’t miss anything, it was fast paced but it still kept you hooked and it connected everything perfectly, if anything I wish it was longer because I just couldn’t get enough. this was really well written and considering the fact it’s 15 years later but you get put back into that time and place and you think “ohhhhh shittt” and everything clicks and connects. the plot was 5/5 it had the right amount of tension and suspense but not over doing it & keeping me at the edge of my seat and the spice was spicing🤤 yes, the spice wasn’t the main focus, but it felt perfectly placed in my opinion (tho I was thrown in a bit of a loop with a certain name being called which isn’t quite my cup of tea) but still 5/5 and those scenes had me blushing and sweating🤤🔥😮💨 the characters were thought out so well and no matter who they are, Edith, Prudence, Elsebth, Cal, Emery, I loved them. You could feel their connection and from the start you knew they were always meant to be. and can we talk about how badass the FMC !! like I would not have been able to handle what she went through, but she did it and you can see her growth and the MMC eughhhh what a freaking handsome protective but sexy mam🖤 the love he has for her is unmatched in almost everything i’ve read, and he’s also just as freaking strong because he held it together quite well. oh and also I NEED Gallows… like now because Ethan😩😩 I just know this man is rough and soft all in one but oh my god I need this man’s story !!! anywayy, Kenna, this was a beautifully written story and I am so grateful to be gifted an Arc 🥰
“I was coming for them and they would fear my wrath and might. They thought they’d killed a sheep, but they re-birthed a god damn phoenix. And they would burn at my hand.”
A harrowing tale of survival, justice and love that defies all of the circumstances. Follow Edith and Callahan to see if they can beat the odds stacked against them. Fans of Kenna’s Swallows’ archive duet will surely love Blackwater as it’s more of that thriller with a side of smut vibe. The twists and turns were exhilarating and kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. KB can do no wrong in my book. She’s always an auto-read for me with every story she pens. Definitely check out the trigger warnings as this book has some heavy subject matters. Even so I enjoyed it and devoured it.
This read is a thriller romance that will keep you hooked! Definitely check out trigger warnings before you dive into this one but if they are all good with you then welcome into Blackwater! Step into a fast paced story that won’t let you put it down!
Everything aka all the pieces get dropped together right when it is needed! Absolutely amazing to read when you need something short and spicy with a plot that is the main focus that does not overshadow the spice that is smattered throughout!
This story is a great read for when you need to get out of a reading slump! Just the right length to keep you locked in! a great story with a wonderful… ending? 👀
This had a thrilling plot with tons of twists and turns, a cult like religion and a small town with a dark history. I ate this up in one sitting. It had me hooked from the beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the wild twists and turns. Our FMC is a badass without giving too much away.
This ended up being a pleasantly surprised read. Wasn’t really sure if the story was gonna pick up and the author delivered. We have town secrets, cult, dead bodies and revenge. Super quick read and enough plot development to keep the pages turning. I would recommend this read
Blackwater completely consumed me. From the eerie, secret-soaked small-town setting to the slow-burning tension between two people tethered by trauma, this book delivered everything I crave in a romantic suspense—and then some.
Edith is a force. She’s not just surviving—she’s fighting, haunted by the past but unwilling to stay silent anymore. And Callahan? He’s the kind of man who makes silence louder, grief deeper, and love feel dangerous in the best way. Their shared past added so much weight to every glance, every near-confession.
One of my favorite quotes came during a quiet, emotional moment: “You can’t outrun the truth, Edith. It knows your name—even when you change it.” That line hit me right in the chest. It sums up the entire soul of the book—how no matter how far we run, our pasts shape us, and sometimes, we have to face the fire to be free.
Kenna Bellrae writes with a cinematic kind of tension and lyrical depth that makes every chapter feel vivid and personal. The twists genuinely shocked me, but it was the emotional layers that left a mark.
If you love stories about resilience, buried secrets, and the kind of love that’s as dangerous as it is healing, Blackwater deserves a spot on your shelf. It’s haunting, heartfelt, and unforgettable.
that very sentence was what shattered me. i read this book in one sitting and i was mad af when i had things to do,i spent ALL DAY devouring this book.. 190 some pages and let me tell you tbe rollercoaster i went on is something else.
i've been so deep in my erotic horror era that i forgot about dark romance. boy did kenna ignite my love for the category again. seriously i actually feel EMOTIONAL like this book is something else. i can't even describe it ive just finished it and my brain dump isn't even brain dumping right now. my thoughts oh my goodness!
okay breathe.
this book was written so incredibly beautifully,i got it today and my goodness,it is written in such a way it evokes such emotion, this isn't my first of kenna's books,i have loved both things ive read by her but this. an easy 5 stars from me. i have no critiques at all,at some points i thought it was gunna be a 4 and then BOOM its like a 6/5 tbh. ethan, edie, cal, prudence, emery all of them. truly all of them. (you'll understand this part when you read it) the most beautiful story and the most beautiful take on a best friends to lovers trope. they were destined to be together. truly it was written in the stars for them. a story with such a beautiful end. a story with twists and turns with a plot line to match. truly the plot line is so jam packed and we learn so much! i mean we learn OVER 15 YEARS worth of plot and kenna has done incredible to encapsulate their entire story from start to finish. paced perfectly. high high plot and spice that is truly the epitome of making up for last time. the characters, i fell in love with them from the beginning, written to perfection. trauma. love. revenge. you have it all.
so many words that kenna wrote evoked such emotion within me,i was in tears at so many points. i feel them on a personal level,i feel the characters stories within my soul, the love for dark romance will never be wavered again. art. kenna created art with this. and it was an honour that she chose me to expierence this. easily a favourite read for me,categorically one i would reccomend 1000x over. to anybody. with triggers that are such a manageable level & a contemporary feel you almost forget the darkness that sits so beautifully in the sub plot. and it takes an artist to be able to do that.
would you like to know my ratings?🤪
characters?? 5⭐️ i have loved every single character throughout this story,it did not falter for a second,i never ever second guessed the characters or their story. it remained throughout the deep rooted trauma that both of the MC's carry, their story tragic but beautiful & the HEA makes every single tear shed worth it.
plot?? 5⭐️ art. is what this is. the plot line is incredible & to be able to encapsulate over 15 years of lost time into the plot line and adding additional on to this. wow. the dark sub plot is incredible, think secret society, mystery, dark underworld of society and religion laced with a contemporary feel,so much so it feels very very nostalgic to me but also a perfect perfect look into how dark romance doesn't have to be insanity,it can be laced with a contemporary feel & it works with this. SO SO WELL.
spice?? 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ super spicy although the spice is not the focus of this story and it defintely doesn't dive straight in. but you have it all, lust and love. push and pull from multiple different POV's. the spice grows with the characters and truly i can't describe how well written it is. it's very immersive and no shock value needed, you truly feel the lust AND love throughout the entire story, page by page you feel like a fly on the wall. making up for lost time but also love? deep rooted in love for somebody. it's beautiful really.
overall?? 5⭐️ truly one of the best stories i have written and also by kenna, this is a favourite. i will happily reccomend this till the day that i die tbh. written beautifully, paced beautifully, solid solid plot line and sub plot, spice but not overly spicy, character development some of the best i think i have read. honestly i have no complaints and i am honoured to have been one of the first to have expierenced the story. loved it,so so much🩶
I won't lie to you, it took me a while to finish this book due to health issues, but that didn't stop me from reading it.
It's the first book i've read by this author, and it was a great start that has left me eager to read the rest of her books. I started reading it thinking it would be one thing, and i'm not going to lie, I was in for a huge surprise.
The tension and suspense are palpable from the start. it's a read that simply grabs you and makes you wonder what's really going on. It completely plays with your mind. I absolutely loved that feeling; it was just the kind of mystery I needed at the time.
I loved the MMC. He was undoubtedly very sweet and protective (qualities I absolutely love). But he also had just the right touch of those dominant vibes in the scenes I love the most... If you know what I mean 😏🔥. And what can I say—someone said daddy? Because here I bring you daddy Callahan.
Our FMC is not at all what she seems. As they say, don't judge a book by its cover. What a brave and strong woman to go through everything she went through, but no one better than her. She had a goal and she achieved it!
📍Do I recommend it?
Yes, I think it's a perfect book for all types of readers. I found it to be a light, fast-paced read with just the right amount of suspense to keep you hooked from the first page.
So if you're looking for your next read, with lots of suspense and a touch of darkness and an FMC who isn't what she seems, this is the book for you.
Hurry! Don't wait any longer and order “Blackwater” now. And when you have it, come back and tell me.
Is callahan your type of man? Cause he for sure was mine.
Thanks so much to the author for the ARC! All opinions are my own.
Don’t come into this if you’re expecting something light. While there’s moments of humor, this is a dark tale of revenge and retribution years in the making.
* dark religious cult * physical and psychological torture * protective MMC * touch as nails FMC (except when it’s just the 2 of them) * small town under cult control * angst. So much angst. * spicy spice!
Edie disappeared 15 years ago in a staged suicide and hasn’t been heard from since, but Callahan has always known that wasn’t the end of their story. When it’s finally time to take Blackwater down, a mysterious woman arrives in town with the same eyes as his high school love. Can these two survive taking down Blackwater?
This is full of the most delicious spice (dirty talk, mild BDSM) along with all the fast-paced fun of a secret apt vigilante mission. My only complaints: 1) that we skip over some scenes and aren’t shown them directly, just told about them after the fact and 2) I cannot fathom taking a break from letting my one true love know where I’ve been for 15 years to give time to process. Give me the whole story now.
“The end (or is it?)” sends me. I’m going to need Ethan’s story ASAP.
I don’t know if it was just my file or this happened to anyone else but every few pages, the formatting would change mid-sentence. It threw off my reading groove so it took me a bit longer than I expected to get through the book. I lost focus but I still enjoyed the story!
I loved the concept and the execution of the story. I love Prudence a lot and how she’s like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Callahan was a bit of a badass in his own right and he kinda gave me lonely lumberjack vibes. The smut was smutting between them. I have no other way to describe it lol. It just makes the most sense to me.
The concept of the cult was kinda what really dragged me into the story. I just wish I got to see more of it. More of the deprogramming that Prudence had to go through or even just more depth in it. I went through a small phase of researching and watching documentaries on cults so, I thought this was a fitting read to end that era.
The chemistry between the main characters was really great and it was interesting seeing them work together throughout the story. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have read it!
Short, fast-paced thriller romance / romantic suspense featuring a mysterious religion/cult in a small town
There was a lot happening in this book with multiple twists and turns.
I really liked the FMC, Edith. She was a strong character with a dark, haunting past, but despite her difficult background, she was willing and ready to fight. I enjoyed discovering more about Edith and Callahan’s shared past throughout the story and liked how Callahan never gave up on Edith.
The plot was interesting and kept me hooked. I can’t believe this book was only about 200 pages long.
Some parts felt a bit rushed for my liking, but overall I enjoyed the storyline.
Please check the TW/CW before reading!
“My heart told me this was the same, but my mind hatefully reminded me that it was impossible.” “Would you be mad at me if I accidentally kept a secret from you?” “You couldn’t change the eyes I fell in love with as a kid. I’d find them even in the afterlife.”
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
I have read every book of Kenna’s & enjoyed them all, this included! 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 is a mystery/thriller steeped in dark romance vibes & its a genre she writes incredibly well!
MMC, Callahan has spent his life in the small town of Blackwater, where the church’s formidable Reverend rules with ruthlessness & coercion. A mystery he was closely connected to 15 years prior, weighs heavy on his heart due to lost love & unanswered questions. That is, until a captivating stranger appears in his bar & the past, with its hidden secrets finally gain retribution.
This book quickly draws the reader in, with subtle hints of the impact the town has had on its individuals & the shocking past that’s shrouded in secrecy. I couldn’t put it down, being so eager to find out how things would eventually fall into place as the story was gradually revealed! Plus, the spice was flaming hot!! But, this is a duet so I’m highly intrigued & excited as to what book 2 will divulge! Highly recommended read!
I have always appreciated Kenna's writing and this is no exception. Her ability to write strong FMC never ceases to amaze me and it feels like a cheaper form of therapy than the one I pay for lol.
On a serious note, this book contains some triggers so please be sure to check for your mental health.
This story follows Edie and Callahan and the town of Blackwater. Although suddenly, the main character changes, or does it? This book pulls you through a tumultuous journey to discover why there are people believing that there are secrets better left buried. The chemistry was off the charts. I love that each character had their own development arc and nothing felt rushed. I know there is some time before book two but I'm impatient. 👁️👄👁️
I should have known that this book was going to be a wild ride.
Author Kenna Bellrae has this incredible talent where she will abruptly drop you into this world and it immediately will have you in a chokehold. This book had me on the edge of my seat. The twists and turns...and just when you think you have it all figured out...this author decides to tilt the whole world on its axis. This book will have you in all your feels. It will have you rooting for these MCs. And don't think that just because it's full of suspense that it's lacking spice... because when these two characters give into their chemistry it's HOT! I cannot wait to see where this series takes us!
“They thought they’d killed a sheep, but they re-birthed a goddamn phoenix. And they would burn at my hands.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This was really good! Giving a bit of the Mindf*ck series vibes. We have small town murd3r, religious cults, underground society, hidden identity and suchhhh good spice and love 🥹 I just adore Callahan and Edith together so much. Told in dual POV with alternating timelines I would HIGHLY recommend for my dark romance/romantic suspense babes!
First off, a huge thank you to Kenna for allowing me to arc read!!
Wow!! This book contains twists, and turns, that I didn't expect, start to finish. The only thing by the end is that I wish I had more, which is apt due to the end of the epilogue.
Filled with thrills, mystery, steam, and romance, this will be a great fall/Halloween read.
Follow a dead girl(or is she?) to break down some serious religious trauma, and take down a cult, and her very attractive high school love interest, to uncover the deep secrets of their small town life.
Well…What in the Hallmark-meets-True-Crime is going on here?
Blackwater is a good little small town thriller with a cult moonlighting as a church. Some dead chick turns back up alive and boom…there’s a second chance at love, a little revenge, some spice that’s probably hotter than your last three dates, and an adorably ‘ride or die’ MMC.
It’s not a masterpiece, it’s a little predictable but quickies like this are perfect for when you don’t have the emotional energy for 900 pages of world building plot.
I enjoyed this book. The flashbacks to years before did provide some needed insight to the current story. Kenna did make the story easy to follow. This kept me on the edge wanting to know what would happen next in this backward town. It certainly had a bit of smut to it and the ending was great! I could certainly see another book as Cal learns what it’s like to be in this new world he finds himself in.
Prudence & Callahan - A Dark Second Chance Romance This one was somewhat different from my normal dark reading, or so I thought. This is a great book, a long novella and the plot is rather straightforward without huge twists. Love lost and thé found, while your focus is on what ripped you apart to begin with. The sins of Blackwater comes to light, old skeletons make an appearance and truths get told. A beautiful romance indeed.
A dark, twisty nonfiction dive into a small-town cult, Blackwater is packed with suspense, murder, and a heavy dose of romance. The FMC is a total badass with a soft side, and the MMC’s quiet grief will break your heart. Every chapter keeps you guessing. Fingers crossed for a sequel — I’m so in!
I really liked this book !! Please look to author notes and warning for content awareness as this is certainly a dark romance. There is mystery, Spice and a cult. All the good ingredients to a fabulous read! Lots of plot with a murderous cult who runs a whole town and some somethings left for dead never die ….. that’s all I can say but give this book a try.
The town of Blackwater holds many secrets and is drenched in evil. Don’t speak against the Father or the Brotherhood. They are always watching. Always listening. People go “missing” all the time. 15yrs later..She comes back to reap her vengeance.
Dark twisted cult thriller with spice. Dual POVs. Timeline switches that give you backstory and mystery. Quick read.
I don’t want to spoil the book, so that is all you get!
What to expect: 🖤Heavy themes of love and loss ⛪️Thriller 🩸HEA 🖤Spicy ⛪️Small town 🩸Unaliving 🖤Hidden identity ⛪️Religious cult 🩸Underground society 🖤Lost love and reconnection 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Thank you to the author for this ARC for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was such a fun read! The mystery surrounding the town and the church was very intriguing. I loved the timeline switches since they were done in such a great way! The characters were well written, even the ones we aren't supposed to like. Will definitely be picking up more stories from this author!
this one wasn’t really for me unfortunately. I struggled to understand what was going on at first and then got an info dump. I wish I saw more build up of the mystery to really suck me into the story. but it was a decent quick read! bonus points for the cute af epilogue! and it sounds like there may be more to come 👀
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️ Lowkey obsessed with Edith and Callahan’s vibe. Trauma, healing, love, fighting for justice. It gave drama but also heart. Some parts dragged a tiny bit, but overall? Worth the read!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Lucy and Kenna Bellrae! 🖤
This was a great quick read! Small town, eerie, religious cult vibes, with an FMC who comes back with a vengeance against those who hurt her and others. Great revenge plot. Enjoyed it! Definitely perfect for readers who love a badass FMC.
