This was a first read in this series as I hadn’t read book 1. I personally would have liked to read about Kylie’s other sisters before reading this one but it’s not required. Rae and Kylie both had not good first marriages. Rae as a chieftain needs a governess to help tame and teach his 2 small boys. Kylie needs to make money or go home to her family so she takes on the job. It was pretty much an instant attraction. They both come to an agreement to be with each other since it’s something they haven’t given up on.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Looking on as others around you have found love while your heart is tightly closed is lonely existence.
It began with a red leather bound book found in the library of the Laird…
Ray Maclean had become Laird of Dounarwyse in his late teens, married at twenty-one and a widower with two young sons little more than a decade later. The marriage had not been a companiable one, definitely not a love match. His wife Donalda was a good mother and chatelain but had never warmed to his love making. Now two years after her death his responsibilities were many and in truth though he loved his sons he didn’t have much free time to spend with them. They had become a bit wild and too out of hand for the young serving maid, he’d turned them over to, to handle. The responsibilities of being the laird seemed to be never ending, even with support of his brother Jack and his young family residing in the broch. No matter how he filled his days the loneliness he’d felt since his father’s death was always with him. He wanted someone to talk with, to reach out and hold, that might offer a comforting touch. Not being a man usually interested in a quick romp with the woman to be found in the brothels, it might come to that. For now, he filled his hours with the duties of the Laird putting aside thoughts that brought him no ease.
However, a solution for at least one of his problems, had been solved A few weeks ago while visiting Mull he met a young widow, with no bairns of her own. Lady Kylie Grey had been left bereft of funds after her husband’s death. Upon hearing of the situation with his sons she offered to come and tutor them. He accepted, although he later had second thoughts since he found himself drawn to her in a way he had never been to another woman. Reminding himself that he had sworn never to marry again, he resolved to simply stay clear of her while she was in his home.
Lady Kylie Grey arrived on the Isle of Mull several weeks, after agreeing to tutor Maclean’s sons, with her younger sister. As a guardian Mackinna was the best. She had been part of her father’s guard for years. However, Kylie began to have second thoughts about tutoring the boys after meeting the rambunctious boys aged 4 and 6. She’d been barren and had had no bairns of her own. At first, she struggled to gain the boys’ attention and cooperation. Another problem was she found herself strongly attracted, in an inappropriate manner, to their father. Her marriage had not been a happy one and she had no desire to repeat such a commitment again. She simply wanted to experience for herself the joys of love making. However, the thought of staying with her family having to face their pity was even more unacceptable. So she would meet the challenge of gaining the boys’ attention and push on.
When a brief meeting with Maclean ended in a passionate kiss between the two and with the assistance of a red leather bound tutorial on love making that just happened to enter the conversation, Maclean offered Kylie an opportunity she’d gladly accepted. They would peruse the pages of the book together, making a game of enacting on what they found within the pages. With a time limit to their game each hoped only to gain memories for the rest of their lives a alleviate some of their loneliness and inexperience.
This is more than a historical romantic fiction, there are enemies lurking near, a guard flogged and dismissed for his inappropriate advances towards Kylie’s sister Mackinna, in search of revenge. There is murder, mayhem, misunderstandings and uncertainty hanging over their heads. A quick attraction but a slowly building spicy romance. I love Jayne Castle’s world building. Much of where the story takes place centers around the beautiful Isle of Mull and the castle that was there during the medieval time period. We learn of some of the history as well. And though the story ends with their own HEA, there is part of the storyline that will continue into the next book with Mackinna at the center stage. I enjoyed reading the history of the land, glad I didn’t live during the period but grasped that times were very different. I loved this story and look forward to Mackinna’s tale as well. So, I highly recommend this for those of love historical fiction, romance mixed with a slice of Medieval life.
I was given an advanced copy for my opinion of the story in review.

I received an advance review copy of this novel through BookSirens for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am a sucker for historical romances and was very drawn to this one, which is a love story between a widow hired as a tutor and a lonely Scottish chieftain. I loved the Scottish Highlands setting and the fact that the author based on the setting on an island overlooking the sea. The author notes that this was based Dounarwyse Castle: "Known today as Aros Castle, Dounarwyse is a ruined 13th century castle near Salen on the Isle of Mull. The castle overlooks the Sound of Mull." I loved the historical details put into the selection and description of the setting, which added a lot of realism to the story.

I also loved that this was a second chance romance. Both Kylie and Rae have lost spouses, but neither were deeply in love with their late spouses. Given the time period and their positions, it made perfect sense that both would have had to make marriages that were best for family alliances and position, rather than their feelings. I loved that these are two people who figured out a way to have mostly amicable marriages but yet neither have experienced true passion or emotional intimacy, so their unfolding love story still had a lot of firsts and doubts for them both!

This was the second book in a planned trilogy. I have not read book one, and I could tell there were references to bigger background stories for other characters that I didn't fully understand. However, this was standalone in that it was fully Kylie and Rae's story, and I don't think not reading book one hurt my understanding in any way.

This novel did require some suspension of disbelief. It seemed exceedingly risky for Kylie to start a relationship with her employer and jeopardize her position. The whole business-like nature of their "agreement" also seemed a bit far-fetched. Unfortunately, I'm just not sure that a woman of that day and age would have been so interested in exploring their sexuality, especially outside the bounds of marriage. I also had a hard time accepting that her name was Kylie! That sounds like a twenty-first century name in every way. And then Rae's poor late wife was saddled with the name Donalda. But! I totally recognize that historical accuracy was NOT the point. This was an enjoyable historical romance. The point was the love story! And this novel did absolutely deliver on that front. It was steamy and I read it in just a few sittings.

Three and a half stars rounded up to four.

I really wasn't sure I would like this book based on the premise, but boy was I wrong! This is a great story about second chance romance and getting what you never knew you needed. Kylie and Rae's story is a sweet and spicy saga that was so much fun to read.

After meeting at her sister's castle in the previous book, penniless widow Kylie agrees to become governess to widower Rae's two headstrong young sons. They had an instant attraction to each other at first meeting, but that is off-limits as she is now his employee. He also displays a grumpy and imperious manner as laird of his realm, far from the charming man she first met. He demands that she be the stern and proper governess required to raise two young boys who have been running amok. Kylie starts to regret her decision to come to Dounarwyse and ponders returning to her father's castle. Can they make this work?

There is a lot of family drama in this book, with trigger warnings about attempted rape included. Kylie's warrior sister Makenna plays a big role in this book as a setup to her story, which is next in the series. I love Makenna for her big bold personality as she helps Kylie come to grips with the bitterness she carries from her difficult first marriage. Kylie has a lot of growth in this book and I grew to really love her character as the story progressed.

Rae also has a lot to learn about women after being married to a woman who detested his physical touch. He is so attracted to Kylie but is afraid of being rebuffed again so he remains aloof. I loved how their "game" came about. Jayne Castel handled it in such a cute and clever way. I won't spoil the fun, but their mutual foray into erotic adventures was delightful and charming.

The best part of the book for me was seeing how Rae, Kylie, and the two boys pull closer together through their many trials and form a happy family. This book has a double HEA, giving Kylie both the man of her dreams and the family she had given up on having. I was so sad to leave this story behind and hope this family plays a big part in books to come.

I've come to know what to expect from Jayne Castel, and she doesn't disappoint. Her research into Scotland, and her authenticity to the time really shines through.

This is second book in the Highland Scandal trilogy, that follows three unmarried sisters as they navigate arranged marriages and failed ones.

Kylie's loveless and abusive marriage has turned her off to the concept all together. A penniless widow, after visiting her sister Liza she comes across Rae Maclean, a widower laird with two uncontrolled young boys who need someone to keep them in line. Kylie offers to teach them, and so she sets off to the Isle of Mull.

Having no children off her own, Kylie wonders if she agreed to more than she can handle with Ailean and Lyle. It doesn't help that their father barks at them, cowing the boys and undermining Kylie.

While trying to navigate how to raise the boys, and to give them the attention they need to thrive, Kylie and Rae come to an agreement. They've both given up on marriage, but that doesn't mean they have to be celibate. 6 months, they'll meet once a week, and when the first snowflower blooms, they'll end their arrangement, no strings and no feelings.

But with the passion simmering between them, can 6 months really be enough? Or will their pasts keep them away from each other for good?

A 14th century historic Scottish romance, I'd rate the spice at a 2/4.

I received an ARC from the publishers through BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts are my own.

From games to real love, is that a possibility?
This is the second story in the Highland Scandal series and follows Lady Kylie Grant and Laird Rae Maclean and his two boys Ailean 6 and Lyle 4.
Lady Kylie determined to make a new life for herself at Dounarwyse takes the position of a tutor to Laird Maclean’s two out of control boys.
Both widowed with unhappy marriages behind them Kylie and Rae find themselves extremely attracted to each other.
Once settled in and a routine set with the boys an arrangement is agreed upon between the Laird and Lady.
They agree to explore this growing attraction and each other’s bodies for a specified time.
Will they be able to give each other up once their allotted time comes to an end?
There are steamy scenes, laughter, complicated feelings growing which were not agreed upon with their arrangement, plus an evil clan member whose actions lead to danger arriving at the castle.
Another fantastic story that Jayne has penned.
I love how descriptive she is at times making me imagine that I’m right there in the gorgeous countryside along with them.
With many loveable characters old and new I’m excited that all the sisters will get to reunite shortly in the next story.
A really lovely series that I’m looking forward to continuing with.

The Laird’s Wicked Game is a spicy medieval romance that takes place in Scotland on the Isle of Mull and brings together a powerful chieftain and a penniless widow in a scorching tale of forbidden passion.
As Kylie Grant disembarks the vessel that has brought her to the Isle, doubts cross her mind about having accepted the position as caretaker to chieftain Rae Maclean’s two sons.
Having been left a widow and penniless Kylie needs this job and a fresh start, a much better prospect than returning to her family.
Rae Maclean, chieftain of Dounarwyse broch is having just as many doubts when he sees his new hire again, Kylie stirs something in him better left unacknowledged.
A lusty tale of mutual attraction will soon find its way into their lives as days and months pass, along with the pages of a very naughty book, and an arrangement both agree will only last for six months.
But will that ending leave two hearts broken?
Loved this true to the times narrative with it’s captivating writing, engaging characters, humor, drama, VERY steamy love scenes, emotion, and danger, woven together in a perfectly crafted read. HEA.

Rae Maclean is a widowed laird but is unhappy.
His marriage had not been a good one and he’s sworn never to wed again. He needs someone to teach his children and stop them from running wild.

Kylie Grant has been left a penniless widow. She has been offered a job by a Laird who needs a tutor for his two sons.
She does not want to return to her parents’ home so she accepts.

Neither Kylie or Rae wish to marry again but they do have an attraction for each other.
An arrangement is proposed – a sensual game for a few months.

Will Kylie accept this game Rae is proposing?
Can they return to an employer/employee relationship when the time comes?

This is another wonderful book in this series. Although it mentions characters and events from the first book you can read and enjoy this one if you haven’t read the first book.

This is a good story containing suspense, intrigue, betrayal, action and steamy love scenes.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the characters – both the main and secondary ones.

Both Kylie and Rae had been widowed in the not too distant past. Kylie was freed from a despicable debt-ridden hisband, and Rae from a wife who could barely tolerate his touch. When Rae had stated that he needed someone to teach Aileen and Lyle, his two unruly young sons, Kylie found herself volunteering. It quickly became clear that Kylie and Rae’s attraction to each other was strong and nearly impossible to deny. Since neither had had a good marital experience, they agreed to keep it purely physical with an end date of the spring. However between now and then, Kylie had the trust of two young men to earn. This story includes multiple steamy encounters, threats, violent actions, banishment, betrayal and various daily trials. The characters range from innocent to evil, with Jack lending a touch of humor and Aileen and Lyle reminding us what it was like to be children with a lot to live up to. This story is fast-paced, full of action, emotion and passion….and very hard to put down!.

Well written, full of drama, intrigue, betrayal, laughs, emotions, passions, suspense, choices, action, steam and twists. Both of these characters, Kylie and Rae are witty yet filled with skeptical determination, each fearing the idea of marriage. Rae had a terrible relationship with his wife before her death. Kylie also had a terrible one but he dies and leaves her without a dime to her name. Kylie wants to find a job so she doesn't have to go back to her family. Rae has 2 sons , who he needs help with. They both are just wild and do as they please. Rae hires Kylie to be their governess. Both notice that they have feelings or desire for the other yet they don't trust marriage anymore. Each has issues that need to be dealt with before being able to deal with their own feelings. Lots of fireworks that are ready to ignite. Fantastic storyline. Would strongly recommend to others.

I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.

This is the 2nd book in the series. It is a hot but captivating story that grabs your interest right from the first page.
Kylie Grant travelled to the Isle of Mull as per her agreement made earlier in book one with Laird Rae Maclean. Kylie is a widow that is putting a bad marriage behind her for a fresh start helping Rae with his two young motherless boys. Rae also had a bad marriage but there is an immediate attraction between them. Kylie not sure she still believes in love but sharing each others bodies not a problem. They agree to explore this for a set time but will evil forces plotting against them win?
This was an intriguing spicy book that grabs you right away and eels you there till the end. Looking forward to the next book!.

The 2d installment of jayne castel's highland scandal series is Rae Mclean and Kylie's story and it's going to be full of angst, forbitten love, difficult life altering choices for both of them, sprinkle with a lot of passion, lust and fun. Follow the story of a powerful but unhappy Laird, who hires  a penniless destitute widow to look after his sons and the attraction between them. Risky yet powerful leaves you to wander what happen next.
Needn't be necessary to say that Jayne Castel's writing pen will enthrall you in the medieval Scotland, most specifically in the isle of Mull. As always she never fails to captivate the reader and keep you on the edge devouring chapter after chapter to discover what it takes to find happiness fulfillment safety in the arms of the man or woman who put everything on line for each other.

The Laird’s Wicked Game by Jayne Castel is the 2nd book in the Highland Scandal Series. Lady Kylie Grant is a penniless widow. She decides to be a duenna to Rae Maclean’s two motherless boys. The boys, six and four years old are a handful with minds of their own. She definitely has her work cut out for her.

Kylie and Rae were in loveless marriages that did not satisfy their needs. Neither even wants to consider another marriage. So, Rae proposes a physical relationship without all the emotional problems they had before. This is definitely a new idea for any Scottish historical book I’ve read before. Jayne Castel creates interesting characters with great story development. I always have to read her books cover to cover in one day. I highly recommend this book.

Let the Games Begin:
An intriguing beginning sets the stage for this amazing adventurous story that had me captured from the beginning.
Rae and Kylie are awesome charismatic characters filled with tension and undeniable desire take us on a ride of secrecy, desirous passion, that almost knocked my socks off and had me grabbing for my fan. The book of hidden games is about to be opened.
This is a thrilling story that was very enjoyable with many laughs, family love, underlying tensions, and of course some undesirable situations before they reach a very rewarding ending plus an additional epilogue.

Kylie accepts a position of duenna for Laird Rae Maclean’s two rambunctious boys at the Dounarwyse broch. Looking forward to finding a new start in her life after her disastrous marriage ended, nerves swirl as she begins to feel emotions she had long given up on. Also coming from a loveless marriage, Rae promises never to marry again. But as the two embark on a journey to explore their desires, tethers of a connection and sparks of deep affection begin to emerge. I adored watching Rae and Kylie’s relationship take off! They both deserved to find out what love truly means. Jayne Castel was able to masterfully combine Highland history, fiery passion and heart wrenching drama into the phenomenal story!! 20/10!!! 100% recommend this series!!!

She did it again!! What I love about Jayne's books is how she develops her characters from often unlikeable to very compelling. Filled with challenging interaction between the Laird and Lady Grant, this books was sizzling with sexual tension and spicy scenes. It also had compelling characters, funny moments and action and adventure. I'd like to point out a character that I loved, which was Storm. Loved the way she incorporated the faithful hound and the way he recognizes the truth of who Kylie is to Rae before either of them realize what they mean to each other. I also enjoyed the way the children react to Kylie and how little by little she wins them over, just as she did their father. Overall, I enjoyed this book very much. I can't wait for Makenna's story!!.

Seeing Kylie come out of her shell after all she went through and Rae letting go of his guilt and resentment was so heartwarming! This is such a cozy read, but with enough drama to keep you invested the whole time.

Kylie was so relatable to me with opening yourself up to emotional vulnerability after being so betrayed and hurt by one you used to love. I adored her character so much!

Spoiler quote below:

“What if I smother ye?” Rae’s low laugh rumbled across the bedchamber. “That’s not likely.” Her pulse started to thud in her ears. “But—” “Ye won’t,” he interrupted her, gently yet firmly. His eyes glinted wickedly then. “Although, if ye do, there are worse ways to go.”

I wasn't sure id like this book while reading the first 2-3 chapters, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Kylie and Rae are both done with marriage, both experienced a loveless, disconnected marriages that ended in them both becoming widowed. But when the impoverished Kylie becomes the nanny to Rae's 2 young sons, there is an instant attraction they both try to ignore, until he comes up with an idea that protects both of their emotions. Well written characters, sizzle, steam, action, drama, anymore. I loved this book and it was a 5 star read for me.

I love all the stories Jayne Castel tells us because she knows how to transport us to the highlands and offer a good love story. This second instalment of her “Highland Scandal” series shows us how two lonely people can get a second chance at love. This story, which tells the tale of Kylie and Rae, illustrates that love can be found in the most unexpected places and with the least expected person. Despite their emotional wounds, which led them to initially deny their feelings for each other, Kylie and Rae's love ultimately prevailed, enabling them to overcome the barriers between them.

The Laird’s Wicked Game by Jayne Castle was a nice historical romance read. I’m a sucker for a Scottish setting, add in a FMC and MMC, both widowed from loveless marriages and it was bound to be good. As Rae and Kylie seek an arrangement that satisfies their needs and hopes to protect their hearts, you’re waiting to see if either will open their hearts to one another. Along the way, there are side characters and threats to contend with, but I truly enjoyed this one and will seek out book one while waiting for the next book in this series. The spice and romance are right, and the writing pulls at my emotional heartstrings.

Gripping and atmospheric

The descriptions, the dialogue, and the portrayal of the main characters including the children) are all excellent.

I really felt that I was there, witnessing the events and feeling the emotions - *all* of them! The time just flew past and then I was at the end of the book.

Recommended to all who like historical romances with action and a certain amount of "heat" with their storylines.

(I was fortunate to receive an ARC however the above is, as ever, my own opinion.)

I don’t normally read historical romances, but I love books set in Scotland and something about The Laird’s Wicked Game drew me in. The cover certainly helped as well! I thought Kylie and Rae were great together, and the little boys were a great addition. I like that this wasn’t overly violent and gruesome, as I think books set in medieval times often are. I’m glad I requested to review this book! I’ve been in a two-star slump lately, so it’s nice to have a five-star read!

As always, I was instantly drawn into the story with the author’s lovable character and descriptive settings. Lady Kylie is determined to make a new future for herself at Dounarwyse by taking the position of a tutor to Laird Maclean's two unruly boys.
Sparks immediately happen between them and this leads to a steamy agreement. From there I totally enjoyed the humor, steamy passion, growing feelings, doubts and some threatening danger. Looking forward to the next story!

Wicked games, revenge, battles and of course, love!

This medieval romance has a bit of everything. There is a very stern laird, a quiet widow hired to teach the laird’s young sons, the lady’s youngest sister, who just happens to be a warrior in her own right, and even a battle! However, this is a romance and would not be complete with love. Watching these two learn to trust and fall in love was a beautiful thing and I cannot recommend this story highly enough!

I know the story is about Rae and Kylie, but come on "arsebiter", what can top that? LOL Other than maybe a certain Collie named Storm. I think this is the first book with risqué tones I've read from Jayne Castel! And I know for a fact I've never come across Rae and Kylie's "game" in a Highlander story, risqué indeed. I also think that MacDougall will conveniently turn up in book three. -;).

Kylie is left a penniless widow and in need of a job, Rae is a chieftain with two wild boys who need a nurting figure in life. But Rae doesn't do love after his disaster 1st marriage but Kylie brings a new life to him, could that ever change? Well written engaging, read that has you hooked with well developed characters and story.
