For the Christian feeling stuck in their faith; for the "Yes, i know the gospel, and i know what Jesus has done for me, but at the moment, I'm just struggling to live joyfully in response" — read this book.
Nate, not only draws out some of the things that cause a stagnant heart, but he also gives us practical guidance to help restore our zeal for the Gospel, the Scriptures, Prayer, the Church, and (ultimately) Jesus.
He does 'back to basics' kind of training by tracing through Acts 2 where the first Church was full of zeal for the Lord, and gently shows us how we can get to that place of excitement.
Here's a simple truth from the book that was beautiful to dwell upon:
"The Maker of heaven and earth has set his affections on you and demonstrated it in the most glorious and visible way possible. Even though you were a rebel, he loved you with a saving love and sent his Son to die on a cross for you."
The book, Stuck? Recapturing Your Joy in Christ, was not what I expected–in a good way. Often books like this appeal to our emotions and do not truly equip us with what’s truly needed when facing such challenges. This one, however, takes us back to the most important things, things that will “fuel your soul.” These first things bring to mind what Jesus speaks of in Revelation 2:2-5.
Stuck? outlines these five first things for when we’re feeling stagnant or struggling in our relationship with God:
1. The Gospel 2. The Scriptures 3. The Prayers 4. The Church 5. The Mission
Akin reminds us that we must learn how to apply the gospel to our own lives. This is key as without this, we are often unable to take in the truth of God’s love for us through Christ’s sacrifice.
It’s also all too easy to forego Bible reading for seemingly quick fixes as we scroll social media or live by the opinions or peer pressure of others instead.
The book continues to highlight how prayer can be a challenge when we feel stuck, giving practical suggestions for these times.
Finally, Akin reminds us to continue meeting together, to share our struggle with other believers, and keep our focus on what matters most. This book is a quick read that inspires us get back on track through practicing these first things.
Highlights:
“Really understanding the gospel is the first step to letting it transform your Christian life.”
“If we are going to get out of our rut, we must first believe that the Bible is truly the Word of God and that we need it.”
“…the Spirit shapes us and transforms our minds and hearts, and our outlook life and eternity.”
“It might feel uncomfortable to read this, but if you are drawing back from meeting with other believers, you are not helping yourself.”
“There is no greater way . . . to look beyond our own problems than refocus again on eternity and throw our energies into God’s mission . . .”
This was a really encouraging short read addressing theological and practical ways to approach feeling "stuck" in your faith. I would commend it to anyone who is going through a season of stagnancy as a help!
This is a helpful, short book on how to continue in the Christian life. Nothing new here, but I can see the benefit this book would be for someone whose faith feels “static, stalled, or stuck”. Another good addition to potential books to have available for members or visitors at our church.
