Katie Butterworth’s Twins of Fire blends high school drama, coming-of-age struggles, and the discovery of a hidden Fae world in this gripping debut novel.
"Di, you know we can’t. It’s against The Council’s laws. We don’t want to do anything that will draw attention to them. It’s going to be hard enough that they’re twins. We can’t risk messing this up and leaving them vulnerable when their Shift happens, because as soon as it does, the Byrnes will find out who we are, and the kids will no longer be safe."
Twins Ella and Kal share a bond unlike any other—one tied to ancient secrets, dormant powers, and a destiny they never imagined. On their sixteenth birthday, their lives are upended as they uncover the truth about who they are, pulling them into a realm of elemental magic, mysterious allies, and shadowy enemies.
As their journey unfolds, Ella and Kal must confront their fears, embrace their connection, and rise to meet a fate that could change the balance between realms. With each revelation, they edge closer to understanding their extraordinary role in the survival of both worlds.
Perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone and Throne of Glass, Twins of Fire is the thrilling first instalment in The World Below series—a story of resilience, discovery, and the unbreakable power of family.
Katie lives in a world of fantasies. Everything around her could be from another realm within our own or a different dimension.
Growing up dyslexic proved difficult at school, and her passion for storytelling was never noticed. However, with age and confidence, she has put those insecurities behind her and taken the plunge into writing and self-publishing her first YA Fantasy novel.
At first I had concerns that it read younger than typical YA but soon got over that. I’m so intrigued by the plot and I absolutely have to know what happens next.
This book has everything - magic, great world building, animal companions, wise leaders (although I don’t trust a couple of them) and bad guys.
A huge thank you to Katie Butterworth for sending me her debut, 𝘛𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘦 a YA fantasy filled with magic, secrets, and the kind of story that feels like the start of something bigger.
At the heart of the book are twins Ella and Kal. Close, protective, and unaware of just how extraordinary their bond truly is. On their sixteenth birthday, everything begins to unravel. Powers long dormant begin to stir, a hidden realm reveals itself, and the truth about who they really are refuses to stay buried.
What follows is a story of elemental magic, shadowy enemies, and a destiny that might restore balance or tear everything apart. It blends folklore and fantasy in a way that makes the world feel both magical and believable, and the worldbuilding was one of my favourite parts throughout. ✨
The plot had a strong foundation, and I really enjoyed watching it unfold. I did feel the pacing wobbled in places, and there were times I found myself wishing for a little more detail. Moments I’d have loved to explore just a bit deeper, as they felt like they had more to give if there had been just a few more pages. But overall, it’s a well-crafted debut. I'm interested to see where the story goes.
Thank you again to Katie Butterworth for sharing this story with me. AD | Gifted | PR
This book completely won me over! I loved how it kept what makes twins so special in real life, that unshakable bond and carried it beautifully into the story. The maternal connection between the twins and their mum was so heartwarming, and Ella’s bond with Art? Absolutely adored it, specifically the scene where they meet.
The world-building was vivid and magical, the dwarfs’ home was described so well I could see it as I read, like I was walking right there among them. And the way they travelled with the stones? Such a clever, standout idea!
I was also really impressed knowing the author is dyslexic, it makes the creativity and detail here even more inspiring. A beautifully written fantasy full of heart, family ties, and adventure. Loved every single page.
Young adult fantasy that cleverly combines “regular” teenagers and an unknown heritage leading them to the fae realm. This was a great story from the get go, Kal and Ella are really likeable protagonists and you are immediately invested in their story. The narrative combined multiple aspects of folklore and fantasy to create a believable and magical world. It’s well written and well paced and would be so loved by teen readers and adult fantasy readers alike! I can’t wait for the second instalment :)
This is a fabulous coming of age fantasy that hooks you from the start and leaves you wanting more! The world building is great and you really feel as if you’re in the World Below with them.
Ella and Kal have you invested in them from the start, and the other characters are so rich, with enough mystery to keep you guessing who you can trust. And who can say no to magical animal companions?!
Do yourself a favour and grab a copy. I can’t wait for book two!
I really enjoyed the overall plot for this book and the potential it has but I do feel there were some pacing issues through out it. TBH I think this book just needed to be longer so everything could have had more time and depth too it. It was only 271 pages after. Regardless I would recommend the story and see so much potential with everything!
