I swear each issue just leaves me longing for the next, such a good series. In the aftermath of the fight with the eradicator last issue, we see as the question grabs a piece from the fight and sticks it in her pocket as she thinks of all the events leading up to this. Why she was brought here, the knowledge someone is willing to kill Kenn the challenger for, the multiple Superman related nemeses they have been fighting, the manipulation occurring in the heroes including controlling batwoman to frame her for murder. Kenn mentioned the atom project, but him and the other challengers also know this place top to bottom to keep it running. Which means he also might be the first to know when something is wrong. The question knows she was brought here to find out who wants to destroy the utopia the league has built, and she knows she is running out of time. It feels like the base is turning against her, the fragment she put in her pocket earlier even turned to goop as she tossed it away on the floor. We finally see as the question ends up in a control room with batwoman, as she tries her best to apologize by saying: “we need to talk.”
Meanwhile on the watchtower security room Jaime is having his own trouble. The screens are lightning up with a command: “System wide disengagement.” He hasn’t seen that before and as he types away to reverse it, his entire body is suddenly taking over his body as he struggles to the ground. I wonder why his suit didn’t kick in, but then I realize that it may be because it didn’t detect a threat, as he was attacked by nightshade, who appears to be under someone’s control! We can see as she tries to break free but a voice compels her to continue and to let them out of the phantom zone containment. The only thing we see in the shadows is the force guiding her is another Superman wannabe.
As all of this is happening Batwoman and the question have made their way to the containment cells where Ted has setup the eradicator for them to question. Eradicator tells them pretty bluntly that they have nothing over him, the wheels are in motion. The question knows they are not after the atom project, she wants to know what they are really doing. But the eradicator points out they don’t understand…”it’s already over.” At this point question has had enough, as she orders Ted to open the cell, batwoman hands her a Kryptonite ring. Immediately when that glass slides down question starts throwing hands. It’s so satisfying to see that droids smug face get beat in. All eradicator says is that he is after a new krypton, and the person he answers to is a means to an end. At this point she hits him again and sticks her shotgun to his head and threatening to send him to the phantom zone. He laughs at that, considering who is coming. As he is monologuing about how much of a shame it is that she doesn’t understand or see all the pieces and how they are living together to destroy this watchtower and everything it stands for…we see as conduit whirs back online and a portal opens up, supposedly from the phantom zone as the mysterious figure steps out. At the same time Ted is also being taken over and succumbing to the mind controlled shade.
Only moments later do batwoman and question see nightshade and are no match for her control over shadows as she restrains and disarms them, giving the chance for eradicator to break free. As they are thrown to the ground, the metal of the watchtower starts to bend and shape and hold them down, as question starts to realize what is happening and is damning herself for not realizing it sooner. Everything that has happened so far has been meant to send her down a rabbit hole she can’t find herself out of, and it’s only now…”chained to the watchtower that I was brought in to protect that I realize what we’re really up against.” Everything starts to come together, Kenn knew what was wrong with the watchtower and knew who was coming, and while they could control some people their reach was faulty, but they tapped into Ken’s mind and found all the weak spots and every way into the watchtower until they breached it completely to get him out. As these thoughts are overlayed with scenes of the watchtower turning on its patrons and the metal forming to capture people, we see as the big bad reveals himself, revealing that it’s too late. The Justice league watchtower now belongs to cyborg Superman!! Oh shoot what’s up man, how have you been? I don’t actually know the extent of cyborg Superman’s powers, but mind control and metal warping are part of it…crap.

This was a fun issue! I think the writing was particularly strong and had me pretty engaged.
However, the payoff of the tension is kind of hit-or-miss. My only basis for who Cyborg Superman is from the original Death of Superman storyline I read a long time ago. I know he’s a “bad guy” but that’s about it.
