Award-Winning Historical Fiction That Will Captivate Your Heart

Awarded close to five stars by Reedsy Discovery, the Online Book Club, and Goodreads, The Peacock’s Legacy is a must-read for lovers of richly detailed Victorian historical fiction.

Can one woman overcome the secrets of her past?
Brigid Power, the indomitable heroine of The Peacock’s Legacy, is born to a struggling Irish tenant farmer. She endures the loss of her mother and the devastation of the Famine of the 1840s, with the loss of three brothers,
These experiences shape her indomitable character, displayed by her rejection of religion and flight from an unwanted marriage arranged by her domineering father.

In Dublin, she joins the Fenian resistance—a bold act of rebellion fuelled by her love for a leading member of the movement, Niall, a banker who woos and marries her. But her idyll is not to last when Niall succumbs to a terrifying disease, and she is widowed with two small children.

Brigid marries another prominent Fenian, Finn, a secretive man. The British Military wants him for his involvement in the insurrection. Brigid and her family must emigrate to Boston, America, in search of a new and safer life. Her peace is destroyed once more by the assassination of her second husband, despite the outward signs of success in her fine home and successful children.

Brigid rebuilds her life around her family and marries for a third time, to John, a sea captain from Barbados. This happy marriage takes her to the Caribbean and a surprising revelation that tests her spirit. She returns to America to find a mysterious letter that will open the door to long-held secrets and change her life forever.

Brigid’s story is a transatlantic epic of endurance, heartbreak, love, passion, and, most of all, strength. Throughout her life, Brigid’s resilience and tenacity have enabled her to survive and prosper when others might fail. Her story is a testament to the human spirit's endurance.

The Peacock’s Legacy is a beautifully woven historical narrative that captures the heart and soul of a woman’s journey through unimaginable hardship. Brigid Power is not just a character she’s a symbol of resilience and determination. From surviving the Irish Famine to fleeing political unrest and rebuilding her life in America, Brigid’s journey is heartbreaking, inspiring, and deeply human. Sasha M. Stevens paints each scene with vivid detail, making the reader feel the cold wind of rural Ireland, the energy of revolutionary Dublin, and the promise of new beginnings in Boston. This is not just a story; it’s a tribute to the strength of women in history who dared to defy fate. A must-read for anyone who loves historical fiction with heart and purpose.

One of the strengths of this novel is its ability to combine personal struggle with sweeping historical change. The Great Famine, transatlantic migration, civil unrest, and family drama all weave together without ever feeling forced. And despite the tragedy that permeates parts of Brigid’s life, the story never loses its sense of hope.

The writing itself is just stunning. Stevens has a gift for language her prose is fluid and evocative, capturing both the grandeur of the settings and the intimacy of human emotion. Whether it’s the frozen fields of Ireland or the warm winds of the Caribbean, every place feels alive. And the emotional undercurrents loss, longing, betrayal, and ultimately healing are portrayed with raw honesty.

The Peacock’s Legacy is beautifully written and filled with historical detail. Brigid’s journey through suffering and triumph is portrayed with honesty and care. Sasha M. Stevens doesn’t shy away from the darkness of the Irish Famine or the complexities of immigration, but she balances these with moments of hope and love. Brigid’s strength and evolution are the heart of this novel, and watching her claim her power is deeply satisfying. The twists especially the final letter are impactful without feeling forced. A stirring, emotional story with rich characters and a powerful message about perseverance. I couldn’t put it down.

What a journey! The Peacock’s Legacy delivers a rich story of love, betrayal, and survival across continents. Brigid’s life is shaped by pain and resilience, and she remains strong through it all. Sasha M. Stevens writes with a historian’s detail and a storyteller’s heart. The emotional stakes are always high, and I loved how Brigid’s choices reflect her inner strength. The historical backdrop from Ireland’s famine to political resistance and immigrant struggles is immersive. This isn’t just about history it’s about how people rise despite it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys emotional, character-driven historical fiction.

This novel is a gem. The Peacock’s Legacy is one of those rare historical novels that balances emotional intensity with well-researched detail. Brigid is a deeply human character flawed, passionate, and unyielding in her determination to survive. I loved how the novel covers such vast ground both geographically and emotionally while always staying centered on Brigid’s personal journey. Sasha M. Stevens writes with a quiet strength that mirrors her protagonist. The plot moves quickly without sacrificing depth, and the themes of family, freedom, and forgiveness linger long after the last page. A poignant, beautiful story worth reading and sharing.

If you enjoy sweeping sagas that take you through generations, cultures, and continents, The Peacock’s Legacy will become a favorite. Sasha M. Stevens masterfully blends historical accuracy with emotional depth. Brigid’s life story reads like a personal memoir raw, intense, and full of moments that tug at your soul. The depiction of Irish culture and the Fenian resistance is enlightening and gripping. What stands out most is how every loss Brigid suffers becomes a building block for her growth. She’s a character who grows wiser, braver, and more determined with each page. I was especially moved by how the story handles betrayal and redemption. A truly immersive read!

The settings are beautifully described from the rural boreens of Ireland to the bustle of Dublin, and later the contrasts of Boston society and the Caribbean. Each chapter brings new emotion and insight, all while advancing the plot in meaningful ways. It’s rare for a book to maintain such consistent momentum while still offering lyrical prose, but Stevens does it effortlessly.

The Peacock's Legacy

I liked the storyline just fine, however...there were many times when it moved very slowly. In fact it seemed to be drawn out on purpose. The story covered some 50 years, & at times I thought it would take that long to read it! This next, I'm not sure was due to the author, poor editing/proofreading, or the digitizing of the book for Kindle, but there were many mistakes: words that weren't needed, words which were needed but missing, some had nothing to do with the rest of what was going on, misspellings, you name it! IDK how overall correct it was historically, but I found at least 2 major inconsistencies. I'm so glad it's finally finished, but I'm also glad I'm not a quitter, because in the end, all threads were tied nicely. If you can handle the possibility of frustration, as I did, DO read this book. If you have little or no patience, you might want to skip it.

The Peacock’s Legacy – Sasha M. Stevens

This evaluation is based on the ARC copy provided by the author, covering only the first five chapters of the book. The Peacock’s Legacy offers a compelling introduction, set in 19th-century Ireland, blending historical events with personal drama. The main character, Brigid Power, stands out as a woman struggling to survive in a world shaped by economic hardship, famine, and the cruelty of a patriarchal society. In these opening chapters, the hypocrisy of religious authority, social corruption, and the pressures of English landlords are presented as forces that directly impact Brigid’s responsibilities and life, creating a vividly felt historical atmosphere.

The strength of these opening chapters lies in their ability to intertwine historical challenges and social inequalities—especially their effects on women—with a personal narrative. Brigid’s courage and struggle for survival represent a search for freedom against oppressive religious and social structures. The narrative’s fluid language, dramatic intensity, and the resilience of the protagonist provide an engaging introduction, particularly suited for readers who enjoy historical fiction, strong female characters, and stories enriched with social commentary.

What stood out most to me was Brigid herself she’s not just a character; she’s a fully realized human being. Her emotional arc, from surviving the Irish Famine to fleeing an unwanted marriage, to becoming involved in the Fenian resistance, was both heartbreaking and empowering. I admired how her story wasn’t sanitized; it showed the real toll of loss, betrayal, and heartbreak, yet still gave us a protagonist who never lost her will to live and love again.

Stevens’ prose is lyrical and immersive without being flowery. I found myself highlighting passages just for how beautifully they captured a moment or emotion. The historical context never overwhelms the narrative instead, it complements Brigid’s personal journey. From Dublin’s political unrest to the societal hierarchy of Boston and the tropical uncertainty of the Caribbean, each chapter feels like stepping into a different world, all held together by Brigid’s unwavering spirit.

The book’s pacing is measured in the best way possible. It gives readers time to breathe, to reflect, and to absorb the beauty of the language. I was especially struck by the emotional honesty of the writing. It doesn’t flinch away from trauma or loss, but it also finds hope in the darkest moments. The prose itself is lyrical and evocative some passages read like poetry, while others are packed with tension and drama.
