When Hawthorne’s half-brother successfully traps him in a crime, the only way he can repay his debts is by performing a task given to him by the great queen of Olympia. All he has to do is locate the twelve runaway daughters of a wicked prisoner. It should be simple enough, except that he has no clues to find them other than an abandoned cloak. Trinity always knew her father’s crimes would catch up with her and her sisters, but when the day finally came that Queen Helena tracked them down, it was far more difficult to escape than she had hoped. Her sisters are innocent, but their father refuses to let them run free. In a final attempt to spare himself from punishment, he places a divine curse on his children, binding his soul to theirs and successfully shackling their fates together. With their father imprisoned, their shared curse traps each sister in a soul-binding cage. Trinity’s divine gift that allows her to communicate with three minds at once helps keep them connected, but she’ll need to reach out to someone who isn’t confined if they’re ever going to be free. Can Hawthorne save a dozen damsels? Or are all twelve souls forever lost?
❤️12 Dancing Princesses + 12 Labors of Hercules 🗡️Greek Mythology world building ❤️Found Family 🗡️Facing your insecurities ❤️Dislike to Friends to Lovers 🗡️Good V.S. Evil
So…what to say to summarize all of my thoughts…(WARNING: this review is a little haphazard 🤣)
WOAH! I thought I was ready for this book as it’s a retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses and Hercules. I was ready for 12 princesses to fall into the Greek mythology-like world and for a dashing MMC to save them all with a silver tree branch and his crazy strength!😉
However, Miss Manning makes the 12 “Princesses” have all of the cool magic powers and I was e captured in the magical prison that was created by the princesses’ evil father. The MMC, Prince Hawthorne, was a surprise with his “half-working” superpowers modeled after Hercules and I loved how this didn’t stop him from being the hero. Trinity, the oldest sister, and FMC, was such a relatable character with her anxiety over her sisters/struggle with fighting against hopelessness in a seemingly hopeless situation.
Also—I’m extremely pleased with the ending for his jerk of a brother, Prince Aaron!!! Hated him from the first book and still do! 🤣
In conclusion, I could not put this book down and all the characters were so relatable (except for Aaron 😉). I loved the unique melding of Greek Mythology and traditional fairytales in one retelling.
I never know what to expect when I read one of these books. They are such a perfect mix of both the myth and fairytale. I love all the small details added in.
I love Thorne he was a great mix of strong and brave but had deep insecurities that he had to work through. I also love Trinity she was so strong and protective of her sisters. I think Trinity and Thorne we perfect together. Such an interesting relationship i love they really got to know each other without seeing the other.
Trinity father was a terrible man. When he steals something from Queen Helena. she wants it back. she doesn't like/want Thorne in the kingdom, so she tasks him with returning them. like Trinity, all her sisters are trapped without knowing where. All Trinity know is that they are in trouble. Will Thorne save them all in time.
Oh man, I absolutely loved this retelling! It felt like a whole new story. I loved the new writing style, I’ve never read anything like this one before. Growing a relationship without ever meeting was fantastic! It is book 4 in the series. I read it as a standalone though. I think if I had read some of the other books it the places would have made a little more sense, but I was just fine reading it without reading the other books first. I can’t wait to go back and read the other books now!!
One of my favorite quotes is “In Olympia, the weather is always perfect due to magic, Thorne explained. But because of that, a beautiful day is expected and never treasured. I think I prefer lands with varying weather like Mortalia and Oceanic. Beautiful days are rare, but they’re so much more valuable.”
So many vivid descriptions! I would definitely recommend this book.
ARC review: Abigail has done it again! This was such an amazing, heart warming story. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the characters and loved following along their journey to a very happy ending. If you love a feisty, stubborn MFC and a strong, swoon worthy MMC, plenty of banter, an epic journey fraught with perils, and the happiest of endings, please do yourself a favor and read this book immediately!
I started reading this as a serial novel on Patreon. Unfortunately I couldn’t maintain my membership so I had to stop reading about 30% of the way through and have been desperate to know what happens next ever since. Abigail did not disappoint! I absolutely loved the dynamics between Trinity and Thorne and the mind-chat between them and some of the other sisters was extremely fascinating. Also, can we talk about how truly evil the girls’ dad, Euronyn, is? There are some characters that make you glad they are fictional lol! Evil on another level! Diabolical in fact.
The mashup of The Twelve Labors of Hercules and The Twelve Dancing Princesses was truly genius and I loved watching Thorne rescue all the girls from their unique prisons that were created from their deepest darkest fears (the one with the snakes had ME trembling!) and crush the silver leaves that had formed the prisons. They were all so cleverly written! I was absolutely enthralled!
I adored the little girl (you’ll see what I mean) and her mother, and I enjoyed getting to know each of the sisters and their mother. Poor Thorne had the worst family ever! That bunch of royals seriously deserve to be dethroned! And if she ever chooses to redeem Prince Aaron I will cry, because he is the PERFECT villain! And the way he uses the sun for his own selfish purposes is awesome.
Everything about this book was incredibly clever. The worldbuilding, the banter and dialogue, the characters, the nods to the original stories, the cameos from characters featured in previous Fairmyth Chronicles (Cerpurrus is so cute!!), the way Thorne’s gift is a bit broken but still allows him to be a wonderfully flawed hero, the epic battle at the end, the brilliant twists, the amazing HEA …. WOW! Abigail has done it again and I cannot wait to read the next book in the Fairmyth series.
🐗Review🐗 Never have I ever read a retelling of Hercules. Until today! And a mixture of The Twelve Dancing Princesses as well. I wasn’t sure how everything was going to play out but I trust Manning to make an amazing novel. I am honestly so happy to add The Dozen Damsels into my library.
First of all, Thorne and Trinity are the King and Queen of long-distance relationships. I’m going to be honest. When the main couple spends too much time apart I generally grow bored. That was not the case with this story. I finished it in one go with a short break to do my daily tasks. Don’t worry. You will still swoon. There is still so much romance and kinship throughout the novel. I am most definitely going to be rereading this soon.
The characters themselves are great. Trinity is an amazing mother hen of her sisters. Her powers are interesting and the reason behind them even more so. Thorne. I love him so much. Everything from his attitude and loyalty to his brawn. He’s an amazing interpretation of Hercules. Trinity’s eleven sisters and their personalities are revealed more throughout. Thorne has his hands full.
The overall storyline is pure genius. I mean, who would have thought to merge Hercules and The Twelve Dancing Princesses? The sisters and the tasks played out perfectly and I was left in shock at one point. The ending was cute and all loose ends were tied up cleanly.
Thank you to Abigail Manning for an ARC of The Dozen Damsels. All opinions are my own.
A mash up of the Twelve Dancing Princesses fairy tale and the Greek myth of the Labours of Hercules might seem unlikely on the surface, but Ms Manning has blended them seamlessly to create this wonderful story full of adventure, romance and the perfection of imperfection. The writing was incredibly clever incorporting a romance between two characters who don't physically meet until the end of the story, some fabulous world-building that builds on the origial Greek myths and places them in a more convential medieval-esque fantasy world and a constantly unpredictable plot. The rescues of some of the damsels as well as details of the ladies themselves are quickly skimmed over, which is needed to keep the book to a reasonable length but is a touch disappointing. Maybe the author will write some companion short stories to add detail to these missing pieces. The sweet, clean romance ends in a Happily Ever After but the road to reach it never seems certain and the reader will be guessing how it will trun out right to the end. Overall, this was an incredibly enjoyable read and highly recommended.
I received an free advanced copy from the author but the thoughts and opinions are my own :)
This was such a clever, clever take on the twelve dancing princesses tale (My favorite tale). In fact, I feel like that author could have made this a much longer book because of how she well she had woven the trials of Hercules with each of the 12 princesses' curses. I loved her take on the tales but definitely wish she had made the story longer to help the reader appreciate the idea and to better develop the love story! If you are looking for a clean and beautiful love story that happens to be a retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses, this is the book for you! I blew through this book so quickly because of how interesting and captivating the tale was. Hawthorne and Trinity were so much fun and I loved the idea of them falling in love due to what was inside of them instead of what they looked like which was a pleasant contrast to Hawthorne's half brother who only cared about looks and appearances but in my mind always presented ugly because of who he was on the inside. Definitely pick up this tale, you wont regret it!
This is one of the most unique retellings of 12 dancing princesses I've ever read and I absolutely adored it. I haven't read the other books in the series but read this as a stand alone and was not confused at all. After finishing it, I learned it was also intertwined with the trials of hercules and looking back, I totally see it and it was really well done. The whole time reading it I also thought it gave me hints of mythology so it's good that I wasn't completely dense. I loved Thorne, he was such a fun character. Poor guy has had a hard life but as he learns more about himself, he learns to trust himself more, which becomes essential. I also really loved Trinity. Such a sweet spirit that has also had a hard life and struggles to trust Thorne, but when she does it helps her and her sisters so much! There were definitely plot twists and fun moments I was on the edge of my seat, in true Manning fashion. However, yet another incredible book from the great Abigail Manning!
Oh my goodness. I love the world of Fairmyth so much. This entwined retelling was fabulous and also had some fun cameos from other books.
“Thorne didn’t have a plan, but plans never worked out for him anyway.” This quote is basically how the story goes, and I found many hilarious aspects—even laughing aloud at one point.
Since this is a Manning book—and I’m a terrible guesser—I had no idea how we would arrive at the HEA. It does happen, though, have no fear.
I received a copy of this book from the author, but would have been reading it anyway; this way I just got it a bit early. : )
Romance: clean! Think PG like an animated Disney Princess movie.
Violence: a bit more of that, but no death, and I don’t think it was terrible either. Still, maybe PG-13 to be safe
This is the only book I’ve read thus far in this series, but it was worth the read! I was on the edge of my seat as Hawthorne went to rescue Trinity’s sisters and I loved that even though Trinity was a prisoner, she helped Hawthorne however she could while communicating to him through her gift if only to help her sisters as well. The author did a great job tackling the characters and their challenges, and the twists were worth it too. Even though Hawthorne and Trinity couldn’t see each other, they still made a great team, and you can’t help but love the banter and slow swooning romance budding between them. The books in this series can be read in any order and if you love the Twelve Dancing Princesses and Hercules, this is for you!
I was so excited for this. I grew up watching Hercules:the legendary journeys and I am a big fan of mythology.
This book was really fun. the plot moved along nicely and there was a lot of fun banter! I liked both Trinity and Hawthorne. I couldn't help but picture Kevin Sorbo as Hawthorne 😂
The combination of The Twelve Labors and The Twelve Dancing Princesses was done really well.
This wasn't my favorite book by Abigail Manning, but I still really enjoyed it. It was a quick read, which I really enjoyed. I liked that the plot was engaging the entire time and there wasn't any lull in the story.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes fairytale feelings or enjoys mythology.
The Dozen Damsels by Abigail Manning released yesterday and this book is SOOOO good! I've read a couple books by Abigail Manning and this one is my favorite so far! 📚 This story is a mix of the 12 Dancing Princesses meets the 12 labors of Hercules. But the 12 princesses are dancing at night, they are living their deepest fears. And Hawthorne, Thorne, is the person to save them. 📚 I love the way the story was written, such a perfect entire twinning of the two tales!! And I love Thorne!! He's keeps persevering even with his own personal struggles. 📚 I received and ARC from the author. All opinions are my own. #12dancingprincesses #12laborsofhercules #fairytaleretelling #nospiceromantasy #thedozendamsels
This book just proved again why when someone asks me for my favorite book by this author, I can never choose. Each new story is so brilliantly twisted into a perfect combination of unexpected wrapped around beloved elements of familiar tales that I find that I love every single one with as much intensity as the last.
This book combines Hercules and the 12 dancing princesses in a way that is unique and so very heartwarming all the way through.
I loved each of the familiar faces that popped up along the way and while I know this is possibly the last in the series, I keep hoping for more!
The Dozen Damsels by Abigail Manning 🌼 A wicked father 🌼 Twelve trapped daughters 🌼 Difficult escapes 🌼 Finding freedom 🌼 Sweet romance, a kiss or two (no spice) Genre: Fantasy Absolutely loved it!! A really cool mix of The Twelve Dancing Princesses and the Twleve Labors of Hercules! Trying to hide from his crimes, Trinity's father places a divine curse on his twelve daughters, trapping them in their worst fears. Who will be strong enough to save them all? Another winner from Abigail Manning! And I thought the ending was perfect! Highly recommend this author and series. Book 4 in the Fairmyth Chronicles, could be read as a standalone ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ARC (will be published April 11)
What an amazing story! It takes the story of the twelve dancing princesses to a whole new level! While still clean and uplifting, this book is built around the magical world of Fairmyth with it’s incredible wold building and many characters (some of which have powers remarkably similar to Greek mythology.) Apollo is hinted at here, as well as Hercules, his adventures, and the Garden of the Hesperides. The story of the twelve dancing princesses is woven into this world in a way that is both charming and fascinating! Although this book is complete in itself, there are hints as to the possibility of another one. I’m totally invested in the next book when it comes!
Twelve dancing princesses but with a twist! I’ll admit Trinity came across as rude in the beginning but once I got a good look at her personality I realized she was truly just caring. Thorne was the perfect imperfect hero, and some scenes at the end were extra hot (no spoilers here ;) I picked up elements form OUABH like the tree and the leaves and the sacrifices and curses inter tangled with it, and I really enjoyed the overarching storyline. The constant talking in the heads was a touch confusing, but overall I did enjoy the plot about darkest fears and overcoming them.
@abigailmanningauthor never ceases to amaze me with her retellings. You really should read her books if you like unimagined stories that are inspired by fairytales. The twelve dancing princesses and 12 Labors of Hercules retelling was so fun to read. Trinity and Thorne are like the dynamic duo. I loved reading about the adventures and Thorne solving the puzzle of each prison. And the slight but sweet romance that buds between these two was well written. Thanks Abigail for an arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Interesting twist/ mash up of Hercules and the 12 dancing princesses! The cover of the book is beautiful! Hawthorne and Trinity are the main characters working together to save all of Trinity’s sisters. The book moves quickly as Hawthorne travels to different locations and faces each new challenge. And I love how each sisters curse or cage reveals something personal about each sister’s character.
The twelve dancing princesses has always been my favorite fairytale and this version did not disappoint! It’s got everything a great story ought to have: a strong and brave hero, clean sweet romance, a smart and feisty heroine, unexpected surprise, and a happy ending! Plus, there are some familiar faces as well!
I really liked this book! Abigail manning is great at writing books that combine fairytales and mythology. The story was fast paced and I did not want to put it down! The romance in this book was so worth it! Abigail is amazing at writing a swoony romance book filled with banter and tension. Five stars!!
I really loved reading this wonderful book! I loved the characters and the plot! I absolutely loved this retelling of The 12 Labors of Hercules & The 12 Dancing Princesses I had a hard time putting this really wonderful book down! I am looking forward to reading the next book in this really wonderful series!
SO GOOD! This book is full of fun plot twists, characters that feel real, and a happily ever after. It's the kind of book that you sit down to read... then accidentally finish in one afternoon. 11/10 would recommend reading.
This book was fantastic! I could not put it down. The plot was captivating and I had to keep reading until the end. There were many twists and turns that kept me engage in the story. I love the mash up between the 12 Dancing Princesses and the 12 labors of Hercules. It was creative to merge those two tales together. Abigail did a great job of blending the tales together that made sense within the story. Highly recommend and cannot wait for the next book in this series!
A cute and enjoyable addition to the series. As always, the premise is the most creative part of the book, but even if the characters don’t endear themselves to me, the book is overall entertaining.
Abigail spins tales in such a dark magical way. The twists she pulls off are *chef’s kiss*. This mashup of the Twelve Dancing Princesses and Hercules does not disappoint! I never would have thought about these stories working well together, but Abigail blended them so naturally that it’s like they were always meant to be.
The characters are strong, brave, and endearing with insecurities and flaws to make them feel so real. Trinity and Thorne are thrown together in an unusual forced proximity way. I love their banter and dynamic. They work so well as a team in terrible dangerous situations bringing out the best in each other.
The plot is fast paced from start to finish. This story full of adventure, danger, surprises, twists, banter, and damsels in distress. It will keep you griped and biting your nails.
Can’t get enough of Abigail’s books. They just get better and better with every new book! Highly recommend, but also recommend reading the first books in this series first. It can be read alone, but think it’d be beneficial to read it in order as someone who didn’t. 😊
