Reading The Jolly Rascal was entertaining.
It is a narrative poem and I thought that this would be appropriate for the early years to introduce reading in rhyme and then progressing to writing poetry.
By reading this lovely narrative poem children can see that they can write poems about anything and be creative with their play on words. It would be a lovely book to read to Kindergarten and Pre-primary (rhyming is a fun prelude to reading) but more appropriate for year ones and twos to begin writing poetry.
The Jolly Rascal has some lovely illustrations that help set the scene for the poem. What I found delightful about this narrative poem is that it was about two young children on an adventure. The two young children are the ones creating the scene in their minds about been pirates and off to sea to find some treasure.
The children ingeniously use the things in their surroundings to create the scene. They use their teddy bears and toys for the wild animal and even their lovely pet cat is placed in the mix but he does not seem to mind all the fuss. All of this is seen in the illustrations and the poetry. Reading this to children would be wonderful. They would love the adventure and while I read it to them page by page, they can all close their eyes and think about the things around their home they could use to create the jungle and wide ocean trip with wild animals.
Reading this narrative poem will encourage students to do the same, they can write about an adventure of something they can do around their home, where can their imaginations take them.
