Oh how I enjoyed this book, the first in a new series in which the police procedural shakes hands with the security service (MI5). Sam Hayes is a brand new detective constable, barely out of uniform, thrust into a series of killings that copy historical murders in England. Hayes' DI pairs him with MI5 agent Pippa Homewood (not her real name, apparently), as the security services have an interest in these crimes. The scene is set for gruesome murders, fascinating forensics, and lots of trips down memory lane. Chases and twists galore leads to a frantic race against time that leaves many intriguing questions for the next instalment. Fallen Shadows is well worth picking up. You'll read it in a couple of sittings.
