Leaf beetles defend themselves against predators in ingenious ways. Tortoise beetle larvae, for example, have two small hooks on their rear ends that they use to carry an umbrella constructed of their feces. Predators are reluctant to attack a larva shielded in excrement, so this defense is quite effective.Imagine if Mary Poppins used a fecal umbrella! That would be so gross! But, seriously, poop parasols aside, everyone who can should be planting native plants. You, too, can make a difference in a bee's life.
