I must Do I run from the man who owns my heart, or embrace his darkness?
Author's A ruthless Irish crime lord, a captive doctor, and a forbidden pregnancy that seals their fate. This scorching dark romance will leave you breathless and begging for mercy.
So Good!! Loved reading The Chief’s Captive. This book was so freaking good that I couldn’t put it down. The chemistry between Maeve and Ronan was so FREAKING HOT and totally action packed until the very end. I can’t wait for more to come!!
Badly written, with a stupid heroine and a weak male lead who continues to fail his family by constantly letting his enemy get away with killing /turning even his own brothers. All the while irritatinly swearing he'll get revenge but at nearly 90% he still hasn't managed to stop his enemy despite all his promises.
First book I've read by this author Ariana Cooper, and this is not well written. It's not professional. She repeats the same words and phrases often on the same paragraph like this one, "I sit up, my head spins ... the room's spinning, I force myself upwards".
But it's even worse than that, because this is one of those authors who just rewrites the same thing over and over and over, filling the book with just one thing. Like when she writes the scene of the heroine having to operate on him to remove the bullet, it says there's no anesthetic, he drinks alcohol that will dangerously thin his blood, no antibiotics etc.
Then the author writes him thinking it all. Then she writes the heroine thinking it all again, that he had no anesthetic, no numbing agent, alcohol thinned his blood etc. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we read it already! Jeez. It's terrible. Really irritating and wasting the readers time.
There's a host of irritating contradictions that are also repeated, like when the heroine keeps thinking things like, "I don't care if he dies, but I'm a doctor so I do care", followed by, "I don't care about him living but I'm human so I do care", etc
Wrong words, and other grammar problems all make the text not enjoyable to read. It also has one of my pet peeves, when she writes the definition of a word in brackets, like her readers are stupid, when she has the heroine thinking, "I'm going to have to get the Garda (the Irish police force).
The author keeps using American names for things, from using US clothing sizes when it's EU sizes here and they're different numbers that the US. It's also not called drywall here, again that's American. Then the biggest one is the author using the word "Chief" in the book's title as well as in the text, I believe the author was actually aiming for the word Chieftain, meaning King in Gaelic.
If you're going to write about a culture, be it Irish, Russian, American, whatever, at least have the decency to look information up to get it right. It's so very easy to Google information like this nowadays and not doing it is just sheer laziness, as well as showing a lack of care for your own book.
The dialogue is really bad, especially the way Roman talks to the heroine, with awful lines like this, "And you are a fine specimen of a woman.". Fine specimen? Really? And lines like this one, that makes him sound like he's a hero from a historical romance book set in the 1800's, "You are a ravishing woman, full of beauty and wit".
Seriously? Laugh out loud, and not in a good way. Even just their thoughts are cringingly bad, like the sex scene, it's awful. It's like reading the scenes in an omegaverse book with all the "cum dripping out of me" and lots of "my juices", "smearing my juices all over his hand", "my juices soaking his hand", and "puddle in my panties". Yes, unbelievably it really does say that. It's really terrible stuff.
As for the actual story, it reminds me of EL Beth's books, specifically one called Debt, in which a guy is shot, his brothers force who they think is a female doctor to save him, treat her badly even after she does, just like here, and forces her to be with him. It's really just the same story repeated here.
All EL Beth's looks are exactly the same, with the heroine kept locked up for weeks and months by the guy, never getting out of that confinement, even if it's a luxury mansion, it's suffocating and exactly why I don't like her stories, and this author has done exactly that in this book, with Ronan keeping Meave locked up in his house for months without once getting outside.
The story just doesn't make sense. There's no reason why his brothers would or should want to kill his woman if she left or if he died. Let alone how or why he could, should or would have to kill her like he keeps thinking he'd have to if she tried to leave him. It's another irritating contradiction when he keeps going on about how important family is and she's clearly the one he wants as his.
There's no reasons given for why so many of the men in Ronan's family, including his own blood brothers, chose or were at least tempted, to back Eamon instead of Ronan, who is not only the rightful heir to the empire, as well as being their own blood brother.
It especially doesn't make sense when it says that Eamon has no Garda in his pocket to protect them but Roman does. The author even writes that they'd all be thrown into prison because Eamon has no contacts within the authorities, so they'd have no protection from prosecution if he was leader.
This is so basic, it's missing important information that it leaves other questions, like why Roman doesn't immediately question his brother Conor, when he was seen talking with the enemy. And the big one, why the heroine is chosen as the doctor they go to when Ronan is shot, when she's not on their payroll.
And that leads to just one of many very stupid actions by the characters here, there's so many really stupid things that fill this book that I ended up having make a list. Some of these points actually have several stupid issues each, so this list could actually be at least 20 points long instead of the 10 I condensed them into -
1. It's stupid they chose some random doctor when she might not have even been at home that night, doctors work shifts, so she may have been at the hospital. She could have been on holiday or staying at a friend's, or had someone staying with her. She could have been sick and unable to perform the surgery from that or just being useless under threats. Any number of things like this were a risk that could have resulted in Ronan bleeding to death by going to a doctor who's not on their payroll, not expecting them and not prepared.
2. It even says she didn't have any equipment, surgical tools, medicine or anything else in her home to operate on him. So again it's extremely risky and stupid to chose her to save his life.
3. It's stupid this crime family don't have any doctors or others with medical trainingwho are paid and willing to stitch them up.
4. The fact they're so well organised they do have "cleaners" to clear away all traces of DNA evidence of their crimes but don't have someone in their pockets to save their lives makes it even more stupid.
5. No doctor is going to recommend he be lifted, moved, then lowered into a bathtub, not to mention trying to hoist a dead weight like him back out of the bathtub again, just to wash blood off him. It would tear open his wounds and the stitches.
6. Any doctor would know he needed to be kept as still as possible, but while not caring about moving him danaging his stitches, she won't give him coffee incase that ruptures his stitches. So stupid.
7. If worried about infection then sponging him down with water where he was already laying on the kitchen counter would clean him just as well without any risk moving him would cause.
8. The author made a supposedly educated and intelligent trauma surgeon so stupid. Like when she had her thinking after her shower that he hadn't hurt her, yes his men hurt her by his order but that wasn't him hurting her. Ahh? Actually yeah, that does mean it's him hurting her. Andcthe biggie, she let's him eff her without using a condom? STI's, tut tut doctor. And her stupidity keeps going, thinking they're even because she saved his life but he gave her clothing and a place to stay. He kidnapped you and you have a home of your own, so you don't need a place to stay! It was so irritating how bloody stupid the author made the heroine.
9. The heroine gives in to him too quickly and too easily, he kidnaps her, keeps her locked up for a week, keeps her locked in the room while he leaves, comes back to her having been hurt, grabbed, slapped enough to leave bad bruses, tied up and gagged by one of his men but just because he asks her nicely to have dinner with him, she melts towards him, dresses up as he wants and has sex with him. Argh! Awful stuff.
10. And probably the stupidest one, It's so stupid it makes me question if it was even a woman who wrote this because it says that him hitting her cervix drives her to orgasm. Really, that surely should mean causes pain? I think the author must have been thinking of the G-spot, not the cervix.
There were just too many stupid things written here to list and too many that kept pulling me from the story and leaving me shaking my head. I ended up giving up unfinished, it's just not enjoyable. Much better written stories out there without the constant repeating of the same information, stupid and weak characters and with much better sex scenes. 1 star.
This was book one in the series so there was the usual confusion with getting to know the cast of characters and not just the main ones. I'll reserve judgement on that until the next in the series because right now, none stood out as developed enough to want to know their story. That may change.
This one was Maeve and Ronan's book. The mafia story arc was good with twists and betrayals that should continue to unfurl in future books. The fact that when Ronan is shot and needs to go to the doctor, they don't go to the family doctor but show up and break into Maeve's home. The arc where she does her duty is extremely good and her sassy not going to break attitude is extremely good. The development between the two does get better and is really good when she's sassy. However, she waffles quite a bit and becomes extremely wimpy at times. That didn't play into her character. She would have been a character that readers could understand, like and root for had she remained sassy, a spitfire, strong female. It got on my nerves so much that when she went wimpy, I skim read. It was annoying. The one other issue was towards the end after an attack on the home, the two main characters drive off without guards and they are in the middle of a war. Hopefully the characters will be fleshed out and more interaction between Maeve and the family. It will be interesting to see how the war plays out and if the interaction gets better with the characters getting rounded out in a way that makes sense.
This is pre review. The premise of this story is good and thats how it captured me to get my hold over this book. At first, I got confused as to why he chose her over their own private doctor. Do they even have one? I dont know, time will tell and I hope the reason behind he chose and know her at the 1st place is reasonable. Not just for the sake of the story.
True to other review, I got confused over the character dump but I know it is the 1st instalment of the series So characters need to be introduced.
I got issues with her character as well as to why she too timid as if she dont have any backbone. A sudden attraction and straight into wam bam is just not my liking either. Its giving Stockholm Syndrom and insta love; not my cup of tea.
I have another question as to why this mafia ish family doesnt have surveillance around their house? Like you may got a traitor someday or you can guarding the captor. This several lack of elements in mafia make me question this book more and more.
DNF. She’s taken forcibly, threatened and injured and she still falls in love with him? 😡 I couldn’t finish it. The writing is terrible! She’s a trauma surgeon who is forced to treat a gangster who has been shot. So many questions straight away, and mistakes. 🔵 Why haven’t the Irish mob got their own on call doctor? 🔵 What if Maeve has been out? Where would they have gone for help then? 🔵 Just because she’s not one of them they threaten her with a gun in her face, so she’s terrified. Then when she’s saved his life they hit her over the head and threaten her when she wakes up, and she still starts to have feelings for him!!! 😡😡😡😡 WOULDN’T HAPPEN. 🔵 She has to treat him on her kitchen table with a paring knife, no anaesthetic, painkillers or anything to clean him down with. As if he wouldn’t have died from an infection! 😂😂
This is Ireland and she says she’s constantly dealing with gunshot wounds. Erm…. ??? And twenty minutes for an ambulance???? Try 5 plus hours!
Started with a bang from the beginning! Our mob boss and main character Ronan had found himself with a medical emergency, and Maeve being the chosen one to help him. The chemistry was present from the beginning with Ronan declaring Maeve as his. Then you have Maeve the doctor who must save him or she’s dead, but she couldn’t help but notice all his nice tattoos and wonderful physique. I’m sure you can guess what happens next with all that forced proximity and hate/love going on :). You’re going to love the suspense on what will happen next with the mob family and Ronan and Maeve. I was at the edge of my seat quick reading to find out what happened next. Highly recommend!.

Aburrida y mala.
This really kicked off in spectacular fashion, thrust straight into Ronan and Maeve's first meeting and what an introduction to each other it was!! I liked the fact the author created a darker hero, who made no excuses for violence or even rough handling of Maeve, i felt Ronan's character was a lot more realistic than other books in this genre. The plot was gripping, full of action, suspense and a heroine who fought for her freedom right to the bitter end, despite falling in love with Ronan. I'm keen to read more in this series!.

I loved reading this book it was definitely exciting that it pulled me in from the start, the story was written well and the characters were captivating. This story was about Ronan O'Rourke he is Dublin's most dangerous crime lord, he is also Ruthless, and cold hearted. Maeve is a doctor she is kind and she would help anyone and that's when she met Ronan O'Rourke with a bullet. What Maeve didn't expect while taking care of Ronan was feelings that she doesn't understand.

I wanted to love this story but I’m not really sure what I read. All sorts of action happens but it’s mostly off page. I don’t know why things happen the way they do. The story is chaotic but there’s no world building or motivation.
The relationship between the FMC & MMC is odd. He kidnaps her; she spirals into depression. They have sex three times & she’s pregnant but doesn’t tell him…
It’s like the author threw every trope she could think of into the book & didn’t bother to flesh anything out. She didn’t make me care enough about any of these characters to want to read the next books. Its frustrating because I expected more.
I don’t know about this one… It could have been so much better… Maeve is a surgeon who is taken by Ronan, the head of the Irish mafia, after he has been shot.. She saves his life, but he cannot let her go so she basically lives in his bedroom for three months and has sex with him a few times and they fall in love, but there are basically no scenes of them bonding, falling in love, etc… the whole book is Ronan and his men just looking for Ronan‘s cousin Eoman, who shot him trying to take over the family and the two cousins kill each other‘s men off left and right— then the book just ends after Ronan gets his revenge- no Epilogue- 🤷🏼♀️
This is book 1 in Cooper's Sins of the O'Rouke Empire. Since this is the first in the series, we have a getting to know you feel. Our main characters are Ronan and Maeve. Ronan is a mob boss who finds himself in a medical emergency needing the assistance of Maeve. I love the dynamic between these two from the start and I appreciate the dark and danger that comes from a mob romance read. Definitely looking forward to book 2 and more in the O'Rouke Empire.

I had to DNF this book. It was very disjointed and random, but the sex scenes really killed it. I totally understand that spice is pretty subjective, especially regarding the language used, however, this was… odd. First the author used the term, “my wet crack,” and wasn’t talking about a wet butt, which was… something. Then the way the MMC handled the FMC’s breasts made me feel like he was a human mammogram machine. Like I physically cringed while reading.
They also just used really unappealing words to describe actions. Ones that sound painful or uncomfortable. I don’t even know.
This is the first book of this series and it starts of with a bang, literally. Ronan is shot and needs a Dr so they make sure he has one, Maeve, a respected surgeon. After making sure Ronan will live they take him to his home and kidnap Maeve to look after him. War has broken out between cousins, Ronan head of the O'Rourke crime family and Eamon who wants to rule. A great start to this series.

This is the first book in the series, and it definitely doesn't disappoint. Ronan is shot an in need of a doctor which is where Mave comes in. She is taken to look after him and it starts their path. This action-packed drama is spellbinding and packed with twists and turns that makes the book well worth the reading.

When Ronan is in need of medical assistance he captures Maeve, a doctor with good heart to do what is right. Action, excitement and danger intertwine into an enticing read that I could not put down. With an intriguing plot full of suspense, the characters thrived off the pages and into my mind. This was an entertaining and riveting read.

Maeve's a redhead, but you know I mean red for everything else that happens in the story. For Ronan, it's one battle after another. There is no turning back and only moving forward in all aspects of his life. This is the first time I read one of Ariana's books. She has created a world of family, crime and sensual pleasure. I enjoyed the spice, very much. The scenes are done well. The love story advances quickly, as it should. It is a great quick read. Enjoy.
Ronan and Mauve. Hes an Irish mob boss. Shes a doctor. His cousin shots him. His brothers take him to Mauve's. She stops the bleeding but needs medication. They take her back to Ronana house to care for him and Ronans says for her protection. Shes now his captive in more ways than one. And now shes bound to him in more ways than one. This is a really great read. I was enthralled with their story.

Few red flag, head scratcher moments for me... we meet Ro, he's been shot, he asks for Walsh.. Does he already know her? wtf
These bad ass mafia guys seem to take a lot of bullets to the chest and be back at work the next day... Or, seemed to only have one thing on their minds (wink wink) don't know about you but pretty sure most guys having taken 3 to the chest aren't really there yet... 🤔
No real substance to this story, it lacked any character development. It was so unrealistic to have a surgeon give up her entire career for someone who had taken her hostage… unless it was Stockholm syndrome, I don’t understand how that happened. The ‘war’ was confusing too, there wasn’t enough clarity on why it was happening or what was happening, it was just vague references to someone trying to take over.
Ronan and Maeve are going to make your day a whole lot warmer when you read this romance book. I found myself sitting by the fireplace drinking hot tea and truly enjoying myself while reading this book. OMG the storyline is amazing, and the chemistry is going to blow you away. I can’t suggest this book enough by Ariana and I am patiently waiting for book number 2.
I enjoyed the chief’s captive which was Ronan and Maeve’s story. It was about a ruthless Irish crime lord, a captive doctor, and a forbidden pregnancy that seals their fate. This scorching dark read will have you breathless and begging for mercy. Suspenseful. I got a copy of the book and voluntarily leaving my review.
Ronan and Maeve have what some could call a somewhat bumpy and unconventional start to their relationship. But there are surprises in store in this gripping dark mafia romance with violence and two strong willed people who will do whatever it takes for their family. I wonder who is next in the series?.

The general overview of the book was ok, it seemed like there was story to be shared, but the book ended really weird. There is a book 2 but I’m not wanting to read it and I don’t believe it follows the same couple. There was a HEA of sorts but at the same time there wasn’t, it ended with him talking about his business and that was that.
This is the 1st book in the series, Sins of theO’Rourke Empire. I’m not sure how to feel about this book. It took a few days for me to finish it because I was having issues staying interested. The story line isn’t bad. The spice is there a few times. It’s to,d dual POV and ends in a happy for now/ cliffhanger going into the next book.
