Pink Heart Jam is genuinely one of my favourite manga series of all time so of course that I loved this continuation too!!

This is a pretty short manga series. This is technically only the third volume, but somehow the story in this one is more developed than in most mangas that I've read. And I've quite a few. The story is so beautiful and just so sweet. None of it is rushed and the plot itself is so well paced!!

The characters are also so lovable. Not only Kanae's design is stunning, but his character means so much to me. He is the quiet type but there's so much more to him than that. He is so thoughtful when it comes to Haiga and just seeing them happy and in love was my favourite thing. Now speaking of Haiga, he is such a golden retriever type character (while Kanae is a black cat, of course) and I love him so much. In this volume, we see him struggling a bit making the decision to change his career path in his last year of college and honestly that was a pretty refreshing thing to see and so relatable. I really loved this small plot line since it just saws how easily we can find a path in life that suits us better!!

Such a good volume and such a good series!! Everyone please go read this!!

Thank you Edelweiss and Viz Media for the arc of this volume!! The English paperback will be realising on May 13th so be sure to check it out!

Its fun to see the couples story continue. Nothing of crazy note really happens but that's what makes it a nice read. Them just continuing thier lives together and the different things that come up. Love their dynamic so much!

This being called ピンクハートジャム beat 1, one assumes there will be a 2, but luckily, this does not end on a cliffhanger, unlike some other sequels I can name (looking at you, セフレ、やっぱなしで!2, how dare you. You are lucky I love Hosoki).

▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒

conclusion comes first
✦ It is a second book but since it’s slice-of-life you don’t really feel the in-between-ness. The best part about this is perhaps seeing Haiga and Kanae’s relationship blossom, as well as their relationship with their friends. We also find out a bit more about Maki (who once again proves to be a good person, just a slut; no shame).

✦ I am so excited for book three four to come out. And while it’s unlikely that this will have anywhere near the number of volumes as, say, 飴パラor 酷くしないで, damn what I would pay to read 6 to 10 slice-of-life volumes about Haiga and Kanae. OR, a spin-off of Hayashida and waifu. (GIVE IT TO ME, SHIKKE. I LOVE HAYASHIDA SO MUCH.) Or maybe Yamauchi’s adventures (I have no doubt they were chaotic).

✦ I AM NEVER BUYING FROM AMAZON EVER AGAIN. Toranoana is a much better way to buy. The Toranoana version comes with 1) a drawing of Haiga and Kanae by Suzumaru-sensei and 2) an extra booklet of “what if they were both hosts”.

▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒

plotte, such as it is
Since this is slice-of-life curtains fic, there isn’t a lot of drama except what Haiga conjures up on his own. The chapters are loosely connected, as they concern our couple, but they sort of meander at the same time. Which I am totally fine with. Honestly, with Haiga and Kanae, I’m like, this is what deserves 11 volumes, not 酷くしないで, although … well, Maya (curse you, Maya *shakes fist*).

ANYWAY, details:

✦ Haiga is in his last year of college while Kanae is working at a recording studio as a recording/sound engineer. They have been living together for at least a year, in the apartment that Kanae doesn’t pay rent in because his older brother, Jun, bought it.

Haiga at a crossroads: Haiga is struggling with deciding what to do in the future. He has a couple of options open to him and he can’t decide which to take. Kanae, despite his workload, comes in clutch by having Haiga meet Hayashida so Haiga can better understand his options. (KANAE SECOND-BEST HUSBANDO (best husbando is Hayashida soz))

Please don’t be perfect: Although Haiga has decided on his path he is still majorly stressed out with working towards it and getting interviewed, etc. (He wants to become a music teacher for small bbs.) Kanae, being a good husbando, proposes they go on a date somewhere. Kanae makes it happen by taking on work on other days to free up the day he wants to go with Haiga. Unfortunately, his overwork just catches up with him, he gets a searing headache in the middle of the date, and they retreat to a hotel. It’s ~8pm by the time he wakes up, Haiga comes back to the hotel room to find him crying, they calm down, and at bedtime they finally talk. Haiga, hearing Kanae’s reasoning, tells Kanae very plaintively:

完璧を目指さないでもらえますか!? (困ります)

A slip of the tongue: Haiga meets Kanae’s older brother Jun, who comes to bother the young couple by staying over for a night for … some reason or another. A chatty, friendly, outgoing hairstylist with his own shop, a couple of slips from Jun plants Seeds of (entirely imagined) Uncertainty in Haiga. Namely, that Hayashida might be Kanae’s ex-boyfriend, or that Kanae had feelings for Hayashida way before.

Although Kanae tells Haiga to feel free to ask him anything if he gets doubts because of Jun’s carefree but unthinking chatter—and Haiga does take him up on the offer a little bit—Haiga keeps his (absolutely unfounded) worries about Hayashida for a bit longer.

We get to see Haiga interact with his two friends in college, Yano and Kurata. He tells them about his problems, gets their advice, and even tells them he’s dating a guy!! I am so proud of my little bb Haiga and also so happy about his two nerd friends. Ugh I love Haiga so much and how brave he has been.

Anyway he comes clean to Kanae about his 1,000% mistaken thoughts and Kanae laughs himself sick, the idea is so unfathomably hilarious. Misconceptions cleared, and the two go straight back into being lovey-dovey as always.

Congratulations, now you really start paying taxes: During Haiga’s graduation, he and his batchmates are treated to a reunion of Kanae’s band, Cigars. Haiga, being an emotional little fucker, cries during the performance. When Kanae presents him with a copy of Cigars’ studio-recorded songs, he cries again, just in time for Hayashida-sempai to find him crying.

Kanae very kindly tells Hayashida about Haiga thinking he once had a thing for Hayashida (Hayashida immediately starts laughing), and they both rib Haiga (YESSSSS). All is well that ends well.

▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒

good points
✦ HAYASHIDA-SEMPAI. Shikke-sensei writes nothing but BL but if they decided to write a whole novel about Hayashida-sempai’s life with his fiancée and her boisterous younger sister, I would be all over that. I love Kanae’s friends (Hayashida and Yamauchi) so much.

If I could have one wish, it’s for Kanae and Hayashida to tell Yamauchi that Kanae and Haiga are dating in book 3. He is going to explode when he finds out and it will be hilarious. If anyone tries to bully Kanae or Haiga for their gayness, Yamauchi is going to go rabid raccoon on their ass.

✦ Haiga and Kanae’s friends are so … GOOD. (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧ I just love how good they are.

This second volume expands not just on Haiga and Kanae’s relationship to each other but also with their friends and the people around them, which I do appreciate. There’s even hints that there will be more family introductions later on. And maybe people will find that boring, but I like these kinds of stories where the characters I like become more fleshed out and inhabit a world that isn’t just them.

(Also, seeing Haiga and Hayashida interact without Kanae there was also so fun. Mostly because I really love Hayashida, that’s all.)

✦ I just enjoy Haiga and Kanae so much. I just really like their personalities and how they interact with each other. They just want to do so much for each other. They are trying SO HARD. I LOVE THEM.

✦ Shikke found a fair amount of times to insert smutty scenes, which is always appreciated 💯

▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒╙┬╜▒

bad points
✦ There wasn’t anything I particularly disliked about this book, and unlike SUZUMARU Minta’s 特装版 恋をするつもりはなかった―double―, where unfortunately I felt like I didn’t get enough of who I came for (Rou and Yoshino), this one has a lot of Haiga and Kanae, and the beast inside of me is momentarily satisfied.

I guess the only strange bit was Haiga’s insistence on being insecure about Hayashida. Of all the characters you could be jealous of, really? Hayashida? But I guess Shikke was hard-pressed to come up with a conflict, and it was easily resolved honestly.

This is a continuation to Pink Heart Jam, with same characters. Haiga and Kanae have lived together for a year, and it’s Haiga’s last year in college. It’s stressing him out with all the exams and figuring out what he really wants to do for the rest of his life and finding a job. Kanae is insanely busy too as a studio sound technician.

It’s not easy to make the relationship work when they’re seldom home at the same time, but they genuinely try and never get angry or upset. They make time for one another, even if it leads to a migraine for exhaustion. But there are moments of jealousy too, when Kanae’s brother mentions Kanae’s old fling to Haiga. And Haiga’s friends still don’t know he’s gay and together with Kanae.

But whatever they face, the two support each other and work things out in a mature way. By the time of Haiga’s graduation, they are in a good place. And Kanae has a surprise for Haiga too, the reason he’s been working so late.

This is a lovely series. Both men are likeable and they are really good and cute together. There’s some spice, but it doesn’t dominate the story. Art is really good. I want to read more to find out where the men take their lives to now.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This manga was adorable. This is a sequel to another manga duology by the same author that I haven't read yet. But I had no trouble jumping into the story. The art was fantastic, especially capturing the characters emotions in their facial expressions. There was a good balance of a college coming-of-age story, mixed with a young gay couple learning to navigate living with each other and how to maintain their relationship. Plus a good amount of spicy content sprinkled on top. If you've enjoyed manga like Given but want some more explicit content, this would be right up your alley.

[I received an ARC of this book from VIZ Media via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.] Haiga and Kanade are back! "Pink Heart Jam beat" follows "Pink Heart Jam," although one can still enjoy this volume without having read the previous one. (I first read "Pink Heart Jam" years ago on futekiya, when it was still separate from Mangaplanet.) If you absolutely need to know how a couple gets together, then you should read the "Pink Heart Jam" first. If you like stories where the couple acts like adults, puts effort into their relationship while still functioning in society, and actually talks things out, then this is for you. To new readers the story will just be a young couple who moved in together, an event that usually changes relationships. I am really hoping there's a volume 2 because reading about Haiga and Kanade is like a dopamine and serotonin story cocktail. "Pink Heart Jam beat" doesn't serve big drama, but for a slice of life romance it's like an ideal fantasy setting because they're pursuing careers in music, have affordable housing, and a supportive social network. Sometimes you just want to read about people who live different lives but are still living their best lives.

This was such a cute continuation! (That I didn't know we were getting!!!)

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the DRC.

We start off with them living together, with Kanae working in his desired field and Yuki in his senior year of college. I found it adorable how they cared so much for each other while they were busy as heck. Also, it's really refreshing to read a BL where both families know their child is dating the same gender and is open to meeting them.

Dynamics while living with your partner can get tricky but they quickly learned that communication is key. Even when Kanae's brother unintentionally stirs up some drama, it's resolved pretty quickly by them communicating.

Outside of them balancing their relationship and life, seeing the band come back together to not only perform but to also immortalize their songs for Yuki was damn near a proposal in my eyes.

It seems like we're getting another volume so I'm curious if it'll go the family route or skip a few years into the future.

Pink Heart Jam beat 1 picks up where Pink Heart Jam left off, with some helpful flashbacks to fill in gaps. Haiga is navigating senior exams while Kanae is working long hours in a music studio. The two have finally moved in together but with both men so busy they struggle to make time for their relationship. These two so clearly love each other, which is why I didn't love the jealousy subplot, but luckily that was resolved quickly. I look forward to seeing how things evolve now that Haiga is also joining the workforce. Thanks to Viz media and NetGalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

I'm rating this highly because I love these characters and their relationship, but this book def doesn't hit as good as the first two. I think it's because it's focusing more on developing their characters and backgrounds and emotional state. They're really exhausted and stressed in this book. It's realistic I guess, but it can be a little draining because I just want them to be happy. I also find the jealousy of Hayashida a bit random and out of nowhere lol. Like I don't mind that being a plot point, but it didn't quite fit in this volume. I'm looking forward to the next volume and the family meeting that I'm sure will happen. I'm just hoping it's a little more happy.

Thank you to Edelweiss and the publsher for a Digital Review Copy of this book.

4.5
Just good, wholesome romance and smut. I love their relationship dynamic, I love how they communicate with each other, and when one isn't communicating the people around them tell them to communicate and then they do!

I love that I can hear the music in my head even when its just a handful of panels, and I love how clear the time jumps are communicated. And I appreciate that even though I haven't read the original series, I understood everything and now I can go back and enjoy the original two volumes.

My only criticism is that I don't think the cover captures the tone of the novel very well.

My cutie patooties!!! Ugh I love them so much. I wish there was even more lovey-dovey date activity, but this book was mostly about their future and expanding their backstories a little more. We got to know more about Kanae's home/family life and I'm assuming the next volume will involve more of Haiga's family. The story and characters felt a lot more established for sure. Kanae and Haiga seemed very worn and stressed throughout this volume though with all the work and graduation stuff. I'm hoping next volume is a little more relaxing for them. I just want to see them happy!

I liked this volume even more the the previous two. This series is a continuation of Pink Heart Jam and has a slight time jump to Haiga being a college senior. He and Kanae now live together and I think their interactions are both cute and realistic. They have some struggles but it's nothing panic inducing. There wasn't a single moment when I thought they might break-up and I really appreciated that. Instead, they talk and work through their issues. Haiga being jealous was kind of comical but also understandable given what he was told. Kanae's brother is kind of an idiot but not in an annoying or malicious way. Overall this was a good read and I look forward to the next volume.

my babies, missed them so much 😭 can’t believe Haiga finally graduated 🥹🥹🥹 him and Kanae living together all this time is the cutest thing, love seeing how domestic they are and how their communication is just so good. They are so in love I’m crying. This whole volume just felt so ~warm, giddy feelings~

also Kanae’s brother making an appearance was a pleasant surprise! He looks exactly like him (he’s so hot) and I love how supportive of the boys he is.

They are literally my favourite bl couple ever like no one will ever compare to this couple. I read the first manga when they came out so I’ve been here and their fan for years so I’ve gotta say that it’s great to have more of their story and to see my favourites a little more.

Esto fue el epílogo perfecto. Son tan lindos!!! me da agresividad. Sería feliz con 10 tomos más de ellos, pero me conformo con estos, además que me dieron todo lo que quería y más. Verlos ya un par de años en la relación fue hermoso ;-;

Now I am the first person to call out unnecessary sequels, but for me, this one was a slam dunk. It was really nice seeing Kanae and Haiga in a more matured, secure place with their relationship. It was sweet and sexy and full of heart, and I cannot wait for another volume!

I didn’t love it, but it was good enough.
Pros:
- Totally green flag!!!
- Smutty scenes
Cons:
- Missed a little more realism on the smutty scenes. Still very nice
- Missed more depth to the characters (probably bc it's the 1st volume)
